Choose the Hyundai Bayon if a shorter body and the lowest current UK entry price are your priorities. Choose the Hyundai Kona if you need the larger published boot, want a current UK hybrid, or are shopping in a European market where an electric version is offered. The comparison is unusually dependent on timing and location: Hyundai announced an all-new Bayon in October 2026, while UK Model Year 27 documents describe a different, currently listed Bayon specification.
The all-new Bayon’s dimensions and luggage figures remain subject to final homologation. Check your country’s final price list, equipment, powertrain availability, warranty terms and delivery dates before placing an order.

What is the difference between the Bayon and Kona?
The Bayon and Kona are both small Hyundai SUVs, but they serve slightly different briefs. The Bayon is positioned as the more compact, accessible choice. The Kona is the larger vehicle, with a published 466-litre boot in current UK specifications, broader powertrain coverage and an electric option on Hyundai’s European model page.

Hyundai Motor Europe announced an all-new Bayon at the October 2026 Paris Motor Show. Its announced body is 4,245 mm long and 1,810 mm wide, with a 2,600 mm wheelbase. Hyundai says those figures, along with the projected luggage capacities and powertrain targets, remain subject to final homologation. Separately, Hyundai Motor UK’s October 2026 Model Year 27 price and technical sheet lists a Bayon measuring 4,180 mm long and 1,775 mm wide, with 90 PS petrol engines. The UK document and the European announcement should not be treated as one identical vehicle.

The current UK Kona Model Year 27 sheet lists a 4,350 mm body (4,385 mm for N Line), 1,825 mm width and 466 litres of luggage space with the seats up. Hyundai quotes 1,300 litres with the rear seats folded for the listed versions. Those published figures make the Kona the roomier, more established choice in this snapshot, while the all-new Bayon may narrow the practical gap when final specifications are confirmed.
Dimensions and parking: which SUV fits your space?
All-new Bayon announced for Europe
| Measure | All-new Bayon announcement | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 4,245 mm | Announced European specification; final homologation pending |
| Width | 1,810 mm | Announced European specification; mirrors are not separately stated |
| Height | 1,565 mm with 16- or 17-inch wheels; 1,570 mm with 18-inch wheels and roof rails | Height changes with wheel and roof-rail configuration |
| Wheelbase | 2,600 mm | Announced European specification; final homologation pending |
Compared with the current UK Bayon sheet, the announced European vehicle is 65 mm longer and 35 mm wider. That is a meaningful distinction for garages, narrow streets and older multi-storey car parks, but it is not proof that every country will receive precisely this configuration.
Current UK Kona
| Measure | Kona Model Year 27 UK sheet |
|---|---|
| Length | 4,350 mm (4,385 mm for N Line) |
| Width | 1,825 mm |
| Boot, rear seats up | 466 litres |
| Boot, rear seats down | 1,300 litres |
On the UK figures, the Kona is 170 mm longer and 50 mm wider than the currently listed UK Bayon. Against the all-new European Bayon announcement, the Kona is 105 mm longer and 15 mm wider. Those differences are large enough to affect a tight parking bay, yet both remain within the small-SUV class. Measure your garage opening and usable interior length rather than relying only on the model name.

- Select the current UK Bayon when every centimetre matters and you are buying from the existing UK range.
- Consider the all-new Bayon only after your market publishes final dimensions; its announced footprint is larger than the current UK car.
- Choose the Kona if extra body length is acceptable in exchange for the published larger cargo area and wider powertrain choice.
Passenger room and everyday practicality
Hyundai says the all-new Bayon brings more space and comfort than its predecessor, but the announcement does not provide independent interior measurements. Hyundai’s European Kona page describes generous second-row leg and shoulder room. These are manufacturer descriptions, not a measured head-to-head test, so use them as reasons to sit in both cars rather than as a guarantee for every adult passenger.
Rear-seat checks to make in person
- Set the driver’s seat for the tallest regular driver, then sit behind it. Check knee clearance, foot room and whether the front seat rails intrude on the rear passenger’s feet.
- Place a child seat on each side if you use them. Confirm that the doors open wide enough and that the front seats still reach a comfortable position.
- Try the centre rear seat with two outer passengers installed. The seat width, floor hump and belt position can matter more than the exterior dimensions.
- Check headroom with the seat set upright, especially on versions with a panoramic roof or roof rails if those are offered locally.
The Kona’s greater external length does not automatically create a better rear seat in every trim, and the Bayon’s announced wheelbase cannot substitute for a test fit. Passenger comfort is one of the areas where a dealership appointment is more informative than a brochure.

Boot space and loading flexibility
Bayon capacity
For the all-new Bayon, Hyundai projects 440 litres of luggage capacity in combustion versions and 397 litres for the planned hybrid. These are projected figures from the 2026 European announcement, not final certified capacities. The 43-litre difference between the projected combustion and hybrid figures illustrates why the powertrain you choose can affect under-floor or rear packaging.
Kona capacity
The current UK Kona sheet gives 466 litres with the rear seats up and 1,300 litres with them folded for the listed versions. Because the Kona figures are from a UK Model Year 27 technical document, they are the most concrete cargo reference in this comparison, although loading height, floor shape and seat-fold angle still determine how useful that volume is for a particular item.

- For a pram, weekly shopping or several soft bags, compare the opening width and floor height, not just litres.
- For bicycles, flat-pack furniture or long luggage, fold the rear seats at the dealership and check whether the resulting floor is level.
- If you are considering the Bayon hybrid, wait for the final local boot specification; the announced 397-litre projection is lower than the combustion estimate.
- If published cargo volume is your deciding criterion today, the Kona has the clearer advantage on the available UK figures.
Engines, hybrid systems and electric availability
Bayon powertrains
Hyundai’s European announcement targets 90 PS and 115 PS petrol engines for the all-new Bayon and says a 138 PS 1.6-litre GDI hybrid is planned to join the line-up in 2027. The announcement also describes target CO₂ ranges as provisional. Neither the hybrid timing nor the targets should be read as current availability in every country.
The current UK Model Year 27 Bayon document lists a 1.0T 90 PS petrol with either a six-speed manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It does not establish that the announced all-new European dimensions, engines or hybrid will be sold in the UK at the same time or in the same trims.
Kona powertrains
The UK Model Year 27 Kona sheet lists a 1.0T 115 PS manual, a 1.6T 150 PS with manual or seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, and a 1.6 hybrid producing 138 PS with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission. The UK sheet lists the hybrid’s Advance on-the-road price at £30,270.

Hyundai’s European Kona page lists petrol, hybrid and electric types and advertises up to 514 km of single-charge range for the electric model. That is a market- and version-dependent European claim; do not assume the same range, equipment or pricing applies to a UK vehicle without checking its local technical data.

Which powertrain suits which driver?
- Mostly urban, low annual mileage: compare the entry petrol versions, then obtain insurance and fuel estimates for your area.
- Frequent motorway journeys: drive the 115 PS or 150 PS Kona versions if available locally and assess noise, overtaking response and seating comfort yourself; no independent road-test data is established here.
- Stop-start commuting: the current UK Kona hybrid is an immediately listed option, while the Bayon hybrid is a future plan for 2027.
- Home charging and local zero-emission access: investigate the European Kona Electric only where it is officially sold, and confirm charging equipment, warranty and range data for your country.
UK prices: an October 2026 snapshot
Hyundai UK’s Model Year 27 sheets give a useful price reference effective 1 October 2026, but the cheapest Bayon and Kona entries are not equivalent trims or outputs.
| Model and version | Transmission | On-the-road price |
|---|---|---|
| Bayon Black Line 1.0T 90 PS | Six-speed manual | £22,725 |
| Bayon Black Line 1.0T 90 PS | Seven-speed DCT | £23,975 |
| Bayon Tech Line 1.0T 90 PS | Six-speed manual | £24,225 |
| Bayon Tech Line 1.0T 90 PS | Seven-speed DCT | £25,475 |
| Kona Advance 1.0T 115 PS | Manual | £25,950 |
| Kona Advance 1.6 hybrid 138 PS | Six-speed DCT | £30,270 |
The £3,225 difference between the listed Bayon Black Line manual and Kona Advance 1.0T manual is an entry-price snapshot, not a like-for-like trim comparison: the engines, outputs and equipment levels differ. The all-new Bayon European announcement does not establish a final UK price. Obtain a written quote for the exact vehicle, registration date, options and delivery location.

Trim equipment
Black Line, Tech Line, Advance, N Line and other names are market-specific. Equipment can change with engine, transmission and wheel size, so compare the exact build sheets. Ask the retailer to demonstrate the driver-assistance settings, infotainment functions, camera or parking sensors, seat adjustment and smartphone connectivity rather than assuming a feature from the trim name.
Safety systems
The supplied specifications do not establish an independent crash-test rating or a complete, identical list of safety systems for both vehicles. Check the safety equipment printed on your local order form and confirm whether functions such as lane assistance, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard, optional or unavailable on the chosen trim.

Fuel economy and running costs
The UK Kona sheet provides WLTP combined fuel-consumption ranges across configurations and trims. WLTP is a standardized comparison method, not a promise of real-world consumption: weather, speed, traffic, load, tyre pressures and heating or air-conditioning use can all change results. The available material does not establish independent fuel-economy tests, insurance quotes, servicing totals, reliability statistics or depreciation forecasts, so treat any household budget as an estimate until you obtain local quotations.
For a meaningful ownership comparison, request the same information for both cars:
- annual insurance premium for your driver profile and postcode;
- scheduled-service prices and intervals;
- road tax or registration charges under your jurisdiction’s rules;
- electricity, petrol or charging costs based on your actual mileage;
- replacement-tyre size and price for the selected wheel option;
- finance APR, deposit, mileage allowance and total amount payable, all dated and tied to the same market.
Warranty and local support
Hyundai’s European Kona trim page says the Kona carries a five-year unlimited-mileage warranty. Warranty duration, mileage limits, exclusions and roadside assistance can differ by country, importer and vehicle version, so confirm the terms in your local warranty booklet. Do not transfer the European statement automatically to a UK or other-market Bayon or Kona.
Should you buy a Hyundai Bayon or a Hyundai Kona?
Choose the Bayon when these priorities dominate
- You want the lowest current UK entry price shown in the October 2026 documents.
- You regularly use tight parking spaces and prefer the shorter body of the currently listed UK model.
- A small petrol SUV with a manual or DCT is sufficient and you do not need the Kona’s published cargo volume.
- You are willing to wait for final all-new Bayon specifications if the announced 2026 European vehicle is the one that interests you.
Choose the Kona when these priorities dominate
- You value a documented 466-litre seats-up boot and 1,300-litre seats-down capacity in the UK specification.
- You want an immediately listed UK hybrid producing 138 PS.
- You need the choice of petrol, hybrid or, in a qualifying European market, electric power.
- You can accept a longer and wider body and a higher entry price in exchange for that extra capacity and choice.
Use a simple tie-breaker
- Write down your maximum garage width and the largest item you carry.
- Choose the smallest body that accommodates both measurements.
- Eliminate powertrains unavailable in your country or unsuitable for your charging and mileage pattern.
- Compare written, same-day quotes for insurance, servicing, finance and the exact trim.
- Drive the remaining candidates back-to-back with your normal passengers and luggage.
What remains uncertain about the all-new Bayon?
The October 2026 European announcement is valuable for understanding Hyundai’s direction, but it does not close every buying question. Final homologated dimensions, certified luggage capacities, CO₂ figures, trim equipment, local prices, delivery timing and country-by-country powertrain availability may change. Hyundai says the 138 PS hybrid is planned for 2027, which is an expected addition rather than a vehicle you can assume is orderable today.
“The all-new BAYON is much more than an update. We have strengthened its SUV character with a bolder design, more space, more comfort and technologies that customers would normally expect from larger vehicles. In one of Europe’s most important segments, BAYON gives us a stronger opportunity to attract new customers. With a hybrid powertrain joining the lineup in 2027, BAYON will build on this momentum.”
Xavier Martinet, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe
There is no established independent comparative road test, crash-test result, long-term reliability survey, owner survey or real-world fuel-economy test in the information available for this comparison. Those are separate questions to investigate when vehicles reach your market. For the purchase decision today, the defensible conclusion is narrower: the Bayon is the compact, lower-entry-price route; the Kona is the larger, better-documented cargo and powertrain choice.
Quick Recap
Before you order: a market-specific checklist
