The declines apply to those models, not to every Hyundai or Kia vehicle—or the entire EV market.
How many Hyundai and Kia EVs sold in October 2025?
Hyundai Motor America reported the following U.S. October sales for its IONIQ models. The comparisons are against October 2024.

Hyundai’s figures come from its October 2025 U.S. sales release.
Kia sold 508 EV6s and 666 EV9s in the U.S. that month. Car and Driver reported year-over-year declines of 71% for the EV6 and 66% for the EV9. Kia America’s October figures also show 508 EV6s versus 1,732 a year earlier, and 666 EV9s versus 1,941; its total sales reached 69,002, a company monthly record. The Kia model counts are consistent across the accounts, though the company’s release page was not directly accessible when these figures were reported.

Were Hyundai and Kia sales down across the board?
No. Hyundai Motor America reported total October U.S. sales of 70,118, down 2% from 71,802 in October 2024. The company also reported that its hybrid sales rose 41% and its broader electrified-vehicle sales rose 8%. Hyundai’s “electrified” category includes more than battery-electric vehicles, so that increase does not mean its BEV sales grew.
The contrast is important: the model-level declines were steep, but they do not describe total company sales. Kia’s record overall October total likewise coexisted with declines in the two EV models listed here.

Why did the EV sales drop?
The reported sales counts establish what changed, not why. Hyundai CEO Randy Parker attributed a temporary market disruption to the expiration of federal tax credits. In Hyundai’s November 1, 2025 release, he said: “We saw strong EV demand leading up to the expiration of federal tax credits, and while that shift has temporarily disrupted the market, we’re confident it will reset.” That is the company executive’s interpretation; the model sales figures alone do not prove the tax-credit change caused the declines.

Not on their own. These are year-over-year U.S. October results for selected models, not a complete count of all EV sales. Some large automakers report sales quarterly rather than monthly, and some do not publish model-level totals, limiting comparisons across the whole market. Car and Driver’s October model roundup notes those reporting gaps.

Later figures should also be kept in their own time period. Aju Press reported that Hyundai, Genesis and Kia together sold 506,200 vehicles in the U.S. in Q3 2026, up 5.4% year over year; their combined hybrid sales rose 53.4% to 138,112, while EV sales fell 51% to 22,311. Those quarterly totals include Genesis and do not replace October 2025 model-level results.
