Hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel engines burn hydrogen for most of the energy while retaining diesel as an ignition, control or backup fuel. The engine may mix hydrogen with intake air and ignite it with a small diesel pilot injection, or inject hydrogen directly at high pressure into compressed air. Those architectures have different fuel pressures, controls, storage arrangements and approval requirements.
A ship therefore needs much more than a modified engine: bunkering equipment, hydrogen tanks, conditioning and metering systems, ventilation, leak detection, shutdown logic, fire protection and vessel-specific class and flag approval. Documented projects range from an operating workboat application to type-approved engines and planned demonstrations, so “hydrogen-ready” does not automatically mean routine fleet service.

What a hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel marine engine is
A dual-fuel engine has two fuel paths and can operate on diesel alone or on a combination of diesel and hydrogen. In a pilot-ignition configuration, diesel is still injected into the cylinder because it provides the reliable ignition source. Hydrogen supplies part of the combustible energy and can replace a large share of the diesel energy under suitable operating conditions.

How the combustion process works
Intake-mixed, low-pressure Otto-cycle operation
One documented approach supplies hydrogen at the intake port, where it mixes with incoming air before the cylinder charge is compressed. A small diesel injection near the end of compression acts as the pilot ignition source. The hydrogen-air mixture then burns through the cylinder’s normal four-stroke or two-stroke cycle.
ClassNK’s 2024 review describes this as a low-pressure Otto-cycle concept. Because hydrogen is introduced before compression, the gas system, air-fuel-ratio control and knock protection are central to the design. The engine must prevent pre-ignition, misfire and excessive pressure rise while maintaining stable combustion as load changes.
High-pressure diesel-cycle injection
A different architecture injects hydrogen at high pressure into air that the piston has already compressed. This resembles the timing and charge preparation of a diesel cycle more closely, but it requires high-pressure hydrogen equipment, specialized injectors and a fuel system designed for substantially greater delivery pressure.
ClassNK describes a high-pressure two-stroke development route with hydrogen supply around 30 MPa. That figure belongs to the development concept, not to all hydrogen engines or all vessels. High-pressure direct injection can reduce the amount of hydrogen occupying the intake charge, but it increases the demands on storage, valves, piping, sealing, injection control and safety verification.
MAN D2862 example
In MAN’s D2862 arrangement, a V12 marine diesel engine is adapted so hydrogen enters the charge air through an adapter. The diesel common-rail injection system is optimized for dual-fuel operation, and MAN states that approximately 5% diesel fuel is injected to initiate combustion. The engine can run in diesel mode or dual-fuel mode; MAN also states that operation continues if the hydrogen tank is empty.

Those are claims about the D2862 configuration. Other engines may require a different pilot share, may have different changeover limits, or may not support the same fallback behavior.
What happens during a typical operating cycle
- Fuel preparation: Hydrogen leaves its storage system and passes through shutoff, pressure-control and conditioning equipment. Diesel is supplied through its separate fuel circuit.
- Air and hydrogen metering: Sensors and engine controls meter hydrogen relative to intake air, speed, load and temperature. The target mixture must stay within the engine’s permitted combustion and knock limits.
- Compression: The piston compresses the charge in an intake-mixed design. In a direct-injection design, hydrogen is delivered later into already-compressed air.
- Pilot ignition: The diesel injector supplies the pilot quantity required by that engine. In MAN’s D2862 description, the figure is approximately 5% diesel fuel for combustion initiation.
- Combustion control: Cylinder-pressure feedback, crank-angle data and exhaust measurements can be used to balance cylinders and detect abnormal combustion. The control system adjusts gas and pilot fuel as operating conditions change.
- Mode supervision: Interlocks decide whether the engine may start, accept hydrogen, switch back to diesel or shut down. A loss of hydrogen supply must be handled without allowing an unsafe gas release or unstable combustion.
Hydrogen and diesel are not interchangeable fuels
Hydrogen has a wide flammability range and a low ignition energy compared with conventional liquid fuels. It is also much lighter than air, so a leak can rise and collect near upper parts of enclosed spaces. These properties affect ventilation, detector placement, electrical equipment, isolation distances and emergency procedures.

Diesel remains a liquid fuel with established bunkering and onboard handling practices. In a pilot-ignition dual-fuel engine it still matters even when hydrogen supplies most of the energy: it starts combustion, supports transients and provides a fallback mode where the engine design permits one.
Ship systems required beyond the engine
EMSA’s study scope treats hydrogen as a complete fuel chain covering bunkering, storage, supply, conditioning and consumption. Each stage introduces equipment, hazards and approval questions.
Bunkering and transfer
- A defined bunkering connection and transfer procedure suitable for the hydrogen form being supplied.
- Isolation valves, breakaway or emergency-release arrangements, grounding and communications between ship and supplier.
- Controls that prevent transfer when ventilation, detection, pressure or personnel-safety conditions are not satisfied.
- Procedures for purging, venting and confirming that lines are safe before maintenance.
Storage
The vessel must carry hydrogen in a storage system suited to its form and pressure. Tanks, pressure-relief devices, valves and piping need protection from impact, heat and unauthorized access. The tank location affects ventilation, hazardous-area classification, accommodation separation, trim and available cargo or deck space.

Conditioning and delivery
Pressure regulators, vaporizers or other conditioning equipment must deliver hydrogen within the engine’s permitted pressure, temperature and flow range. A direct-injection system may require far higher pressure than an intake-mixed system. The delivery network also needs isolation sections so a leak or component failure does not release the entire stored inventory.

Controls and automation
Engine control units coordinate hydrogen valves, diesel injection, turbocharging, air-fuel ratio, cylinder balance and mode changes. A ship-level automation system must supervise tank pressure, ventilation, gas concentration, engine alarms and emergency shutdowns. The safe state must be defined for loss of power, sensor disagreement, failed valve position and communications faults.
Safety engineering and failure protection
Hydrogen leakage and high flammability are central hazards identified in EMSA’s work. Safety design is therefore layered rather than dependent on one detector or one automatic valve.
Gas detection and ventilation
Fixed detectors should be placed where hydrogen could accumulate, especially at high points and around likely leak sources. Ventilation must prevent dangerous concentrations and discharge gas to a safe location. Detection thresholds, alarm actions and detector maintenance belong in the vessel’s approved safety case.
Double-wall piping and segregation
Yanmar’s technical account of marine dual-fuel development illustrates common engineering categories: double-wall gas piping, deliberate fuel-pipe placement, separate main, pilot and gas systems, and sensors that supervise gas injection and air-fuel ratio. That account concerns a gas dual-fuel design, so it should be read as an example of the engineering disciplines involved, not as proof that every hydrogen engine uses the identical arrangement.

Combustion and machinery safeguards
- Anti-knock and misfire detection for intake-mixed operation.
- Cylinder-pressure balancing to limit uneven loading.
- Transient controls for rapid load changes, acceleration and generator steps.
- Interlocks that block gas admission during start-up, shutdown, unsafe ventilation or failed detection.
- Automatic changeover or shutdown when hydrogen pressure, purity, temperature or valve feedback leaves the approved range.
- Fault diagnosis and recorded alarms so crew can identify whether the problem is in storage, delivery, controls or the engine.
Fuel standards and approvals
ISO 8217:2024 sets requirements for marine fuels within its scope before onboard handling. It does not approve hydrogen for a particular vessel or certify that a specific engine installation is acceptable. A real project must address the applicable flag-state rules, classification requirements, hazardous-area rules, pressure-equipment requirements, bunkering procedures and vessel-specific risk assessment.
Engine type approval is also different from approval of a complete ship. The engine may be certified while the tank arrangement, piping, ventilation, fire protection, control integration and operating procedures still require separate review.

What emissions claims do—and do not—show
MAN reports average CO2 tailpipe emissions approximately 50% lower and peak reductions of up to 80% compared with its diesel engine. These are MAN’s manufacturer-reported tailpipe comparisons for the engine; they are not lifecycle results. A lifecycle assessment would also consider hydrogen production, compression or liquefaction, transport, bunkering and any methane or other upstream effects associated with the energy supply.
Hydrogen combustion does not automatically eliminate every regulated pollutant. The engine’s temperature, air-fuel ratio, pilot fuel, after-treatment and operating profile influence nitrogen-oxide emissions and other exhaust constituents. The relevant certification for the complete installation, rather than a headline fuel percentage, determines compliance.

A practical integration sequence for a vessel project
- Define the mission: establish route length, speed, hotel load, port time, required reserve and whether diesel backup is mandatory.
- Select the architecture: compare intake-mixed and direct-injection concepts against available tank volume, pressure capability and duty-cycle requirements.
- Map the fuel chain: design bunkering, storage, pressure control, conditioning, metering, return or vent paths and emergency isolation as one system.
- Complete hazard analysis: examine leakage, fire, overpressure, ventilation loss, collision damage, sensor failure, blackout and incorrect valve operation.
- Integrate controls: connect engine, tank, ventilation, detection, alarms and emergency shutdowns, then define crew actions for every alarm state.
- Obtain approvals: coordinate flag, class, port and equipment reviews; do not assume an approved engine approves the vessel layout.
- Validate operations: test start, stop, mode change, loss of hydrogen, diesel-only fallback, rapid load changes, bunkering and emergency response before routine service.
What is commercially ready today?
The documented evidence is mixed. MAN identifies the Hydrocat 48 as an operating workboat using two D2862 hydrogen dual-fuel engines, which demonstrates a real vessel application. Other cited projects are at different stages: Kawasaki’s carrier-generator announcement described a planned demonstration, while Yanmar’s January 2026 announcement described type approval, a NOx certificate and future installation and trials.
That distinction matters when evaluating a proposal. Ask whether the evidence covers a complete ship, the same engine rating, the intended hydrogen storage system, the same duty cycle and approved operating procedures. A laboratory result, an engine certificate or an Approval in Principle can reduce technical risk without proving that a vessel is ready for unrestricted routine service.
Bottom line
Hydrogen-diesel dual-fuel engines are credible marine power systems, but they are integrated hydrogen installations rather than simple diesel conversions. Intake-mixed pilot-ignition and high-pressure direct-injection designs impose different requirements. Diesel may remain essential for ignition and backup, while the ship must manage hydrogen from bunkering through storage, detection, conditioning, controls and emergency shutdown. The right readiness question is not “Can the engine burn hydrogen?” but “Has this engine, fuel system, vessel layout and operating case been approved and demonstrated together?”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a ship run if its hydrogen supply is empty?
MAN states that its D2862 arrangement can continue operating in diesel mode when the hydrogen tank is empty. That fallback is specific to the described engine and should not be assumed for other designs.
Is a 95% hydrogen ratio the same as using 95% hydrogen by volume?
No. The Kawasaki figures are reported as a ratio by heat or calorie-based energy. Mass, volume and energy percentages are different measures and must not be substituted.
Does hydrogen dual-fuel propulsion eliminate NOx?
Not automatically. NOx depends on combustion temperature, mixture control, pilot fuel, load and after-treatment. Certification for the complete engine and vessel determines compliance.
What should a shipowner request from an engine supplier?
Request the required hydrogen pressure and purity, pilot-fuel schedule, load and transient limits, tank-to-engine flow requirements, fallback behavior, alarm and shutdown logic, certification scope, demonstration evidence and the boundary of every emissions claim.
