For the 2024 U.S. model year, the hydrogen-car shortlist is unusually small: just the Toyota Mirai and Hyundai Nexo. The Mirai is a rear-wheel-drive sedan, while the Nexo is a front-wheel-drive SUV. Both use a hydrogen fuel-cell system to generate electricity for an electric motor, and both can be refueled in roughly five minutes when a working station is available.
The rankings below use EPA combined MPGe and EPA range, then weigh body style, equipment, and everyday practicality. The biggest caveat is not the vehicles themselves. It is the limited and sometimes unreliable hydrogen-fueling network, which makes these cars practical mainly for drivers with dependable access to California stations.
2024 hydrogen cars ranked
| Rank | Vehicle | Body style | EPA combined | EPA range | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Toyota Mirai XLE | Sedan | 74 MPGe | 402 miles | Best range and efficiency |
| 2 | Hyundai Nexo Blue | SUV | 61 MPGe | 380 miles | Best choice for SUV practicality |
| 3 | Toyota Mirai Limited | Sedan | 65 MPGe | 357 miles | Most luxurious Mirai |
| 4 | Hyundai Nexo Limited | SUV | 57 MPGe | 354 miles | Most equipment, weakest efficiency |
These are EPA figures for the 2024 U.S. model year. Trim selection matters: the difference between a Mirai XLE and Limited is 45 miles of rated range, while the difference between the two Nexo trims is 26 miles.
1. Toyota Mirai XLE
Best overall on paper
- EPA rating: 76 city, 71 highway, 74 combined MPGe
- EPA range: 402 miles
- Power: 182 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque
- Drive: Rear-wheel drive
- Seating: Five
- Cargo volume: 9.6 cubic feet
The Mirai XLE is the clear winner if range and efficiency are the main criteria. Its 402-mile EPA rating is the highest of any 2024 U.S.-market fuel-cell vehicle, and its 74 MPGe combined rating also leads the field.

- The Hydrogen fuel trolley uses zinc particles and food grade citric acid to synthesize hydrogen, and then uses the produced hydrogen and air to generate electricity to drive the trolley.
- During the experiment, please use 80℃ hot water for Combination reaction (if the water temperature is low, the amount of hydrogen and air pressure from the Combination reaction are insufficient, the fuel cell cannot be used for power generation), and then take off the plug of the vent pipe at the lower part of the fuel cell, release the gas in the rubber hose immediately, and then plug it back immediately, so that only pure hydrogen and air are in the fuel cell, so that the fuel cell can generate hydrogen air power.
The tradeoff is packaging. This is a low sedan with a very small trunk, not a substitute for an SUV if you regularly carry bulky cargo. Its rear-wheel-drive layout and 182-hp motor provide a conventional, composed driving experience, but outright performance is not the reason to buy one.
Toyota rated hydrogen refueling at approximately five minutes and included up to $15,000 of complimentary hydrogen with a 2024 purchase or lease, subject to the program’s conditions and eligibility rules. The fuel-cell system warranty is eight years or 100,000 miles, while the hybrid battery warranty is 10 years or 150,000 miles.
2. Hyundai Nexo Blue
Best hydrogen SUV
- EPA rating: 65 city, 58 highway, 61 combined MPGe
- EPA range: 380 miles
- Power: 161 horsepower
- Drive: Front-wheel drive
- Seating: Five
- Hydrogen storage: 6.33 kilograms
The Nexo Blue gives up 22 miles of EPA range and 13 MPGe compared with the Mirai XLE, but it is the more useful vehicle for many families. Its SUV body makes it easier to load passengers and everyday cargo, and its 380-mile range remains strong by fuel-cell standards.
The 2024 Nexo was a carry-over model rather than a major redesign. The 161-hp electric motor is less powerful than the Mirai’s, and the Nexo sends power to the front wheels, but its primary appeal is practicality rather than speed.
Choose the Blue trim if minimizing hydrogen stops and maximizing rated efficiency matter more than extra features. It is the most sensible Nexo configuration for long-distance driving within a dependable station corridor.

3. Toyota Mirai Limited
Best-equipped Mirai
- EPA rating: 67 city, 64 highway, 65 combined MPGe
- EPA range: 357 miles
- Power: 182 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque
- Drive: Rear-wheel drive
The Mirai Limited uses the same basic powertrain as the XLE but takes a significant hit in efficiency and range. Its 357-mile EPA range is 45 miles below the XLE, while combined efficiency falls from 74 to 65 MPGe.
In return, the Limited adds the equipment expected of a more upscale sedan, including a panoramic roof, heated rear seats, ventilated front seats, three-zone automatic climate control, and additional parking technology. The larger wheels and added equipment explain much of the range penalty.
This is the right Mirai for a buyer who values cabin features more than maximum range. It is not the value or efficiency choice, however. The XLE offers the same output and a substantially larger margin between refueling opportunities.
4. Hyundai Nexo Limited
Best-equipped Nexo, but least efficient
- EPA rating: 59 city, 54 highway, 57 combined MPGe
- EPA range: 354 miles
- Power: 161 horsepower
- Drive: Front-wheel drive
- Hydrogen storage: 6.33 kilograms
The Nexo Limited retains the SUV’s useful shape and adds equipment, but it has the lowest combined MPGe and shortest EPA range of the four 2024 configurations. Its 354-mile rating is 26 miles below the Nexo Blue.
That does not make it a poor vehicle. It makes the trim a harder recommendation for hydrogen drivers, because a fuel-cell vehicle’s range cushion is particularly important when the next station may be unavailable. Select the Limited for its features and cabin presentation, not for operating efficiency.

What MPGe means for a hydrogen car
MPGe does not mean that the vehicle travels 74 miles on a gallon of liquid hydrogen. Hydrogen is generally dispensed by weight, in kilograms. The EPA uses MPGe to compare the energy consumption of gasoline, battery-electric, hydrogen, and other vehicles on a common scale.
One gasoline-gallon equivalent contains 33.7 kilowatt-hours of energy. Therefore, a 74-MPGe rating describes how far the Mirai XLE travels using the energy equivalent of one gallon of gasoline. It does not tell you what a fill-up will cost. Hydrogen prices, station availability, and supply interruptions vary considerably.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhy the fueling network matters more than the range number
A 402-mile range sounds reassuring, but it only helps if the driver can reach a functioning hydrogen station. In the United States, light-duty hydrogen fueling is heavily concentrated in California. There is no nationwide network comparable to the gasoline system, and station status can change quickly.
California’s hydrogen dashboard distinguishes between open retail stations, planned stations, and stations listed as temporarily non-operational. A 2024 state assessment counted 42 stations open to the public as of November 4, 2024, while 20 additional stations had been unavailable for more than 30 days. Open stations were operating at an average of 62% of capacity. Reported outage causes included maintenance, equipment failures, supply-chain problems, and hydrogen-supply disruptions.
Before buying or leasing one of these vehicles, check the stations along every regular route. Do not rely only on the advertised refueling time. A Mirai or Nexo can normally be filled in about three to five minutes, but that advantage disappears if the station is closed, out of hydrogen, or operating with a failed dispenser.

What about the Honda CR-V e:FCEV?
The Honda CR-V e:FCEV should not be included in a strict 2024 model-year ranking. Honda identifies it as a 2025 model, even though it became available at select California dealerships during 2024.
The CR-V e:FCEV has an EPA rating of 87 combined MPGe and a 270-mile hydrogen range. It also offers approximately 29 miles of battery-only driving, a 174-hp electric motor, and hydrogen refueling in roughly three to five minutes. It is therefore relevant to a 2025 hydrogen-car comparison, not to the main 2024 list.
Likewise, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell was discontinued before the 2024 model year and is not a current 2024 option.

Anyone shopping for a used Nexo should run the vehicle identification number through the NHTSA recall lookup. Hyundai recalled certain 2019–2024 Nexo vehicles under NHTSA campaign 24V-761, Hyundai recall 269.
The thermally activated pressure-relief device could fracture and allow hydrogen to leak, increasing the risk of fire while the vehicle was parked. NHTSA instructed affected owners to park outdoors and away from structures until the repair was completed. Dealers were to replace the device at no charge.

The recall covered certain vehicles built from August 10, 2018, through August 25, 2023. That production range means you should verify the VIN rather than assume that every vehicle sold as a 2024 Nexo is affected—or unaffected.
Common mistakes in 2024 hydrogen-car comparisons
- Listing the CR-V e:FCEV as a 2024 model: It launched in 2024 but is a 2025 model-year vehicle.
- Giving every Mirai a 402-mile range: Only the XLE has that EPA rating; the Limited is rated at 357 miles.
- Giving every Nexo a 380-mile range: The Blue is rated at 380 miles, while the Limited is rated at 354 miles.
- Calling hydrogen cars zero-emissions in every sense: They have zero harmful tailpipe emissions in normal operation, with water as the tailpipe by-product. The overall environmental impact also depends on how the hydrogen is produced.
- Assuming a five-minute refueling stop is guaranteed: The vehicle may refuel quickly, but the station may be unavailable or out of fuel.

What should I check before buying a used Hyundai Nexo?
Check the VIN for open recalls, especially NHTSA campaign 24V-761 involving certain 2019–2024 Nexos. Also confirm that nearby hydrogen stations are open, supplied, and located along your normal driving routes.
The Bottom Line
The Toyota Mirai XLE is the best 2024 hydrogen car by the numbers, with 402 miles of EPA range and 74 MPGe. The Hyundai Nexo Blue is the better practical choice if you need an SUV. The higher trims add comfort and technology but sacrifice range.
Those rankings matter only after the fueling question is answered. A 2024 Mirai or Nexo can offer fast refueling and hundreds of miles of range, but it is not a normal nationwide car. Buy or lease one only if you have reliable access to functioning hydrogen stations and a backup plan for outages.
