That gives it a distinct advantage for adaptable cooking and cargo use, but it does not make the Holidays universally more versatile than the Volkswagen California. The California also has rear seating that slides out through the tailgate, and the available evidence does not establish a current, same-market comparison of prices or matched specifications.
What “out-flexes” means in this comparison
New Atlas used the phrase in an August 13, 2024 comparison, principally because the Holidays’ kitchen can be removed and used outside the van. It is a specific advantage, not a verdict based on comparative road testing. Both vans offer ways to rearrange their interiors: the California’s rear seats can slide out through the tailgate, while the Holidays combines a removable kitchen with convertible sleeping and seating arrangements. New Atlas’s 2024 comparison describes the launch-era configurations.
How the sleeping and seating layouts compare
Citroën Holidays: four berths
The Holidays is a four-berth camper with two double sleeping areas. Citroën’s French-market specification list effective April 1, 2026 confirms a 120 × 195 cm berth in the pop-up roof and a 115 × 190 cm berth formed from the two-place bench. Those dimensions are confirmed for the French specification; equipment and configurations may differ in other markets. The 2024 comparison described four belted seats as well as the two beds.
Volkswagen California: rear seats can move out
New Atlas reported that the California’s rear seats slide out through the tailgate, making them easier to remove when cargo space is needed. This is a meaningful alternative to the Holidays’ removable kitchen: the California’s cited flexibility concerns seating and cargo, while the Holidays’ defining feature is moving the cooking block between indoor, outdoor and removed-from-van use. The available material does not establish a current, trim-matched comparison of seat layouts or bed dimensions.

What the Holidays kitchen and camping equipment include
In the April 2026 French price and specification list, the Holidays’ kitchen includes a two-burner gas cooker, sink, 16 L refrigerator, 10 L clean-water tank and 10 L grey-water tank. The cooker and sink are part of the removable kitchen arrangement highlighted in the 2024 comparison. Check the specification for the exact market and trim before assuming those details apply to a van sold elsewhere.
For France, the Pack Max camper specification also lists a portable toilet, a cold-water outdoor shower with a 25 L tank, a 120 W photovoltaic roof panel and a 95 Ah auxiliary battery. These are useful camping provisions, but they do not amount to an indoor bathroom: the Holidays configuration described by New Atlas has no built-in indoor bathroom, and the toilet is portable while the shower is outside.

Engine, dimensions and availability need a date and market
New Atlas described its 2024 UK Holidays configuration as 498 cm long, 199 cm high with the roof closed, and powered by a 174 hp 2.0 L BlueHDi diesel paired with an eight-speed automatic. These are details of that reported configuration, not universal current specifications. Citroën announced SpaceTourer engine changes on February 27, 2026, so the 2024 powertrain should not be treated as confirmation of current Holidays engine availability. Citroën’s February 2026 announcement concerns the SpaceTourer base; verify the Holidays’ current engine and transmission in the country where you intend to buy.
2024 launch prices are not current price comparisons
New Atlas reported launch-era prices of €48,990 for the Holidays in Germany and £56,590 in the UK. Its article also listed €62,689 for the California Beach and €77,832 for the California Coast in Germany. These are dated 2024 figures for different markets and California versions, not present-day quotes or a like-for-like price test. Current Volkswagen pricing and matched specifications are not established here, so these numbers cannot support a current price winner.

| Making room for cargo | The kitchen can be removed to free cabin space. | New Atlas reported rear seats that slide out through the tailgate. |
| Sleeping | French 2026 list confirms a 120 × 195 cm pop-up-roof berth and a 115 × 190 cm bench/bed. | Current matched bed dimensions not established. |
| Toilet and shower | French Pack Max lists a portable toilet and 25 L cold-water outdoor shower; no indoor bathroom in the described configuration. | Current matched specification not established. |
| Current price comparison | French price/specification list effective April 1, 2026; other market pricing not established here. | Current price and matched trim specification not established. |
The Holidays is the more adaptable choice if being able to move cooking outdoors or remove the kitchen is central to how you camp. The California remains a credible rival for cargo flexibility because its rear seats can be slid out. A broader winner depends on the precise market, trim, equipment and current price—not just the kitchen design.
