For highway driving, compare the exact vehicles’ EPA highway estimates, drivetrain, tires, route and expected speed. For towing, start with the loaded trailer and the vehicle’s ratings for trailer weight, payload, tongue weight, axle loads and combined weight. A hybrid can be an excellent tow vehicle, while a larger engine can still be unsuitable if the chassis or equipment is not rated for your load.
The practical answer is configuration-specific: choose the hybrid when its published ratings cover your trailer with comfortable margin and its highway efficiency, quietness and driving pattern fit your use. Choose the larger-engine vehicle when it provides the required rating, sustained power and cooling capacity that the hybrid alternative does not. Engine displacement or the word “hybrid” is not a substitute for checking the vehicle’s manual.

What “hybrid” and “larger engine” actually describe
These labels describe only part of a vehicle’s powertrain. Two vehicles sold as hybrids can have very different electric motors, batteries, transmissions, cooling systems and tow ratings. Likewise, a larger-displacement engine may be naturally aspirated or turbocharged and may be installed in a vehicle with a very different chassis, axle rating or hitch limit.
Strong hybrids
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) describes strong hybrids as vehicles that can temporarily propel themselves with the electric motor while the gasoline engine is off. Their larger battery stores energy recovered during braking and can provide electric propulsion when useful. That allows the vehicle to use a smaller engine while retaining the ability to deliver power when the system calls for it.

Mild hybrids
Mild hybrids use electric assistance and regenerative braking but cannot propel the vehicle on their own. They may improve launch response, support stop-start operation and reduce accessory or engine load, yet they should not be evaluated as if they had the same operating behavior as a strong hybrid.
What a “larger engine” means
Displacement is only one specification. EPA notes that turbocharging can let a smaller, more fuel-efficient engine replace a larger one without giving up power when needed. A turbocharged engine, transmission, final-drive ratio, cooling package and vehicle ratings together determine how a vehicle performs under load. A larger engine can offer more sustained output, but its size alone does not establish towing capacity or fuel economy.
Which is better for highway driving and towing?
Use a two-part test rather than a slogan:
- Highway test: compare the EPA highway estimate for the exact model year, trim, drivetrain and tire configuration, then adjust your expectations for speed, weather, terrain, passengers, cargo and any trailer.
- Towing test: compare your trailer’s loaded weight and tongue weight with the exact vehicle’s trailer rating, payload, gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), gross combined weight rating (GCWR), front and rear axle ratings and required equipment.
If the hybrid meets those limits and delivers the highway economy you value, it is a valid choice. If the hybrid’s rating is too close to your loaded trailer or the route demands sustained power on long grades, a vehicle with a higher verified rating and appropriate engine and cooling hardware is the safer choice. Do not decide from the hybrid badge, cylinder count or displacement alone.
Highway fuel economy: compare the right numbers
Use the highway estimate, not the combined figure
EPA labels publish city, highway and combined estimates. The combined value weights the city and highway results; it is not a highway-only number. For a buyer who spends most miles at highway speed, begin with the highway estimate for each candidate. Match model year, trim, drivetrain, tire size and other configuration details before comparing.
EPA estimates come from prescribed test cycles intended to create a standardized comparison. They are useful for comparing vehicles under the same procedure, but they are not a promise for one driver’s trip. Your result can differ with speed, traffic, grades, wind, temperature, tire pressure, cargo, roof equipment and driving style.
Why a hybrid’s advantage may not look the same on the motorway
Hybrid systems recover energy during deceleration and can shut the engine off when conditions allow. Those opportunities are generally more frequent in stop-and-go driving than during a steady, uninterrupted cruise. EPA reports a potential 4%–5% fuel-economy improvement from start-stop systems, with the largest benefit when an engine would otherwise idle, such as in city traffic. That statistic is not a hybrid-versus-larger-engine highway comparison, and it should not be used as a forecast for towing.

At highway speed, aerodynamic drag rises rapidly as speed increases, and a trailer adds substantial frontal area and weight. The battery and motor still assist when the control system requests them, but no generic hybrid percentage can account for every route or load. Compare the vehicles’ published highway values, then consider your actual cruising speed and whether your route includes hills, headwinds, frequent exits or long descents.

A larger engine can be less efficient when lightly loaded, but the vehicle around it matters. A smaller turbocharged engine may provide the required power efficiently, while a larger engine may operate with less strain when pulling a heavy trailer. Transmission gearing, vehicle mass, aerodynamics and calibration can outweigh displacement differences. The only defensible comparison is between complete, similarly equipped vehicles under the same EPA labeling rules and your real operating conditions.
Towing capacity starts with the loaded trailer
Calculate the load you will actually tow
Use the trailer’s loaded weight, not its empty or brochure weight. Include water, propane, batteries, tools, sporting equipment, food and any other cargo. Add the occupants, luggage, accessories and hitch equipment carried by the tow vehicle. Tongue weight also consumes the vehicle’s available payload and affects axle loading.
A nominal trailer rating does not override GVWR, GCWR, front or rear gross axle weight rating (GAWR), payload or tongue-weight limits. A vehicle can be under its maximum trailer-weight figure yet over its payload or rear-axle limit once passengers and cargo are aboard.
Two official hybrid examples
| Vehicle example | Published trailer rating | Condition and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 RAV4 Hybrid (U.S. owner manual) | 1,750 lb maximum gross trailer weight | Specific to the cited 2025 model and configuration; verify the manual for your exact vehicle. |
| 2023 Sienna Hybrid (U.S. owner manual) | 3,500 lb maximum gross trailer weight | Requires the specified towing package; the rating is specific to that vehicle and equipment. |
These examples demonstrate why “hybrid” cannot supply a universal tow number. They are not recommendations for a particular trailer or a substitute for the manual delivered with your vehicle. Ratings and equipment can vary by market, model year, drivetrain and trim.

The owner’s manual should identify the required or recommended tow package, hitch class or capacity, wiring, trailer-brake provisions, sway-control guidance and towing mirrors. A hitch that fits physically may not have the required capacity. Install equipment rated for the trailer and vehicle, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for attachment and electrical connections.

How towing changes the driving job
Towing increases the work required to accelerate, climb grades and maintain speed. Trailer aerodynamics can matter as much as weight, especially at highway speeds. Altitude, heat, headwinds, long grades, traffic and repeated braking add further demand. The available specifications do not provide a universal fuel-economy adjustment for those conditions, so an unladen EPA highway estimate cannot predict fuel consumption while towing.
The 2025 RAV4 Hybrid owner manual states: “Towing a trailer can have an adverse impact on handling, performance, braking, durability, and fuel consumption.” Treat that as an operating warning, not a claim that every hybrid tows poorly. It means the driver must stay within the published limits, use the required equipment and allow for changed stopping, cornering and acceleration behavior.
Why towing can limit hybrid downsizing
Hybridization can let engineers use a smaller engine because electric torque assists when needed. However, EPA’s technical assessment explains that preserving equivalent towing capacity can require an internal-combustion engine with rated power similar to its conventional counterpart. Some modeled efficiency gains assumed a lower towing capacity. That is an engineering trade-off, not a universal judgment on hybrids.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When a trailer demands sustained power for a long climb, the battery cannot be treated as an unlimited source of energy. The engine, motor, battery, inverter, transmission and cooling system must all manage the load. A vehicle engineered for a higher tow rating may therefore use a larger engine or retain more engine capacity than an efficiency-focused hybrid. Check the complete rating and the manufacturer’s operating guidance instead of inferring capability from battery size or engine displacement.
A step-by-step buying method
- Write down the real mission. Record annual highway miles, normal cruising speed, trailer type, loaded trailer weight, expected tongue weight, passengers, cargo and the longest grades or hottest conditions you will encounter.
- Shortlist exact configurations. Identify model year, trim, drivetrain, tire configuration and whether each vehicle is a strong or mild hybrid. Do not compare a base hybrid with a heavily equipped larger-engine model and treat the badge as the only difference.
- Record EPA highway estimates. Use the label value for each exact configuration. Keep the highway figure separate from the combined figure, and note that the estimate is a standardized comparison rather than a guarantee.
- Read the owner’s manual towing section. Confirm maximum gross trailer weight, tongue-weight limits, payload, GVWR, GCWR and front and rear GAWR. Check whether a factory towing package is mandatory.
- Weigh the loaded combination. Include passengers, luggage, accessories, hitch hardware and trailer cargo. Compare actual axle and combined weights with the manual’s limits, leaving practical margin rather than targeting the maximum.
- Verify equipment. Confirm hitch and ball-mount capacity, wiring, trailer brakes, sway-control requirements and mirror extensions. Use correctly installed, vehicle-compatible equipment.
- Evaluate the route. Consider sustained grades, altitude, heat, wind, traffic and your intended speed. A flat, moderate-speed commute and a hot mountain tow are different powertrain tests.
- Choose based on the limiting requirement. If the hybrid comfortably satisfies the loaded ratings and your route, its efficiency and electric assistance may suit you. If towing demand is the limiting factor, select the configuration with the verified rating and hardware you need, regardless of its badge.
Which buyer benefits from each approach?
Hybrid is a strong fit when
- Most miles are highway travel without a heavy trailer, or the occasional trailer is comfortably below the vehicle’s verified limits.
- You value regenerative braking and electric assistance in traffic, towns and rolling routes.
- The exact hybrid configuration has sufficient payload, tongue-weight and combined-weight capacity for your loaded use.
- You are willing to follow the model-specific towing-package and equipment requirements.
A larger-engine vehicle is a stronger fit when
- Your trailer is heavy, tall or aerodynamically demanding and will be towed frequently.
- Your route includes long grades, high heat, altitude or sustained highway speeds under load.
- The hybrid alternative’s rating leaves little margin after passengers, cargo and tongue weight are counted.
- The larger-engine configuration is the one that provides the necessary tow rating, cooling package and axle or payload capacity.
Neither choice is automatically right when
- You know only the engine size or hybrid label, not the exact vehicle ratings.
- You are using the trailer’s empty weight instead of its loaded weight.
- The required tow package, brakes, wiring or mirrors are missing.
- You are comparing a combined EPA number with another vehicle’s highway number.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
Mistake: assuming every hybrid can tow
Correction: Look up the exact owner manual and model-year specifications. Hybrid systems differ, and some vehicles have no meaningful trailer rating while others are engineered for substantial loads.
Mistake: treating displacement as a tow rating
Correction: Verify trailer, payload, axle and combined ratings. A larger engine in a lightly rated chassis is not automatically safer or more capable.

Mistake: promising EPA highway economy while towing
Correction: Treat the unladen estimate as a comparison baseline. Towing changes aerodynamic drag, mass, acceleration, braking and fuel demand; no universal adjustment applies.
Mistake: installing a hitch based only on the vehicle name
Correction: Confirm the manual’s equipment requirements and capacity. Check trailer brakes, wiring, sway control and mirror needs before towing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Measuring tongue weight and staying within limits
Tongue weight is the downward load the trailer places on the hitch. It counts against the tow vehicle’s payload and can shift weight onto the rear axle. Toyota’s towing guidance discusses measuring trailer, axle and tongue loads with scales. A portable tongue-weight scale can be useful for owners who tow regularly, provided its measurement range suits the trailer and it is used exactly as instructed.
The scale is an optional measuring aid, not a replacement for the owner’s manual, certified public scales or a complete weight check. Confirm the vehicle’s tongue-weight limit and the trailer manufacturer’s instructions before relying on any reading.

What to expect on a highway tow
Plan for longer acceleration and stopping distances, greater sensitivity to crosswinds and more frequent downshifts or engine operation on grades. Keep speed appropriate for the trailer, maintain greater following distance and monitor temperature or warning indicators according to the vehicle and trailer manuals. On descents, use the powertrain’s permitted engine-braking or regenerative-braking modes without exceeding trailer or vehicle limits.

Fuel use will generally rise when a trailer adds mass and aerodynamic drag, but the amount depends on the combination and conditions. Neither a hybrid label nor a larger engine provides a reliable percentage before you know the loaded weights, shape, route and speed.
Bottom-line decision rule
For highway driving alone, select the complete vehicle with the better EPA highway estimate for your exact configuration and the characteristics you value at your normal speed. For towing, select the vehicle whose documented ratings and required equipment cover the loaded trailer, passengers, cargo and tongue weight with practical margin. A hybrid is not automatically economical while towing, and a larger engine is not automatically capable. The owner’s manual and the exact configuration decide the answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a hybrid tow as much as a vehicle with a larger engine?
Sometimes, but there is no universal hybrid rating. Compare the exact model’s loaded trailer, payload, tongue-weight, axle and combined-weight limits, and verify any required towing package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWill a hybrid get its EPA highway fuel economy while towing?
Do not expect that. EPA highway estimates are standardized, unladen comparison figures; trailer weight, aerodynamics, speed, grades, wind and cargo can materially increase fuel use.
Is a larger engine always better for mountain towing?
Not automatically. Sustained towing depends on the complete powertrain, transmission, cooling system, chassis ratings and equipment. A larger engine may be appropriate, but its displacement alone proves nothing.
What should I check before buying a tow vehicle?
Use the exact owner manual to verify trailer weight, tongue weight, payload, GVWR, GCWR, front and rear GAWR, tow-package requirements, hitch capacity, wiring, trailer brakes and mirror or sway-control guidance.
