There is no universal winner. An electric car is often cheaper on energy when most charging is done at home on a suitable tariff. Relying on public chargers can narrow or remove that advantage. A conventional hybrid needs no plug but runs on petrol or diesel. To find the cheaper choice for your journeys, compare similar cars using your mileage, route mix, actual energy prices and charging access—and distinguish fuel costs from the full cost of ownership.
First, decide what “cheaper to run” means
Energy cost means the electricity or fuel used to cover your miles. Whole-life cost is broader: it can include what you pay to buy or lease the car, its resale value or depreciation, maintenance, insurance, tax, charging equipment and relevant tolls or zone charges.
Keep these questions separate. A car can cost less per mile in energy but still cost more overall if its purchase or lease terms, depreciation, insurance or other costs are higher.
Which type of hybrid are you comparing?
Conventional hybrid
A conventional hybrid is not plugged into the mains. Its battery is charged by the engine and regenerative braking, so its running-energy calculation is based on the fuel it consumes. Mild and full hybrids differ in how they use electric power, so compare the exact vehicle rather than treating every hybrid as identical.

Plug-in hybrid
A plug-in hybrid can be charged externally and can drive on electricity for some journeys. Its costs depend on how often you charge and how much of your driving is electric; when its electric range is used, it continues mainly on petrol. The Energy Saving Trust describes hybrid EVs as having electric range of up to 50 miles, but that is general guidance, not a specification for every model. Count both electricity and petrol for your own usage.
Fully electric car
A fully electric car uses electricity rather than petrol or diesel for driving. Its energy cost depends heavily on where you charge: home, workplace and public tariffs can differ substantially.

Why charging access can change the result
Home charging on a suitable electricity tariff can make an EV’s energy cost much lower than fuelling an equivalent petrol car. UK government guidance updated 10 April 2025 says home charging a medium-sized EV can cost around half as much as fuelling an equivalent petrol vehicle; average public-network charging is roughly equivalent. These are broad estimates, not a matched comparison with a particular hybrid or a promise for your tariff.
HMRC’s advisory company-car rates in force from 1 September 2026 offer another dated reference: 7p per mile for home EV charging and 15p per mile for public charging. The same HMRC table gives petrol rates of 14p per mile for cars up to 1400cc, 17p for 1401–2000cc and 27p for over 2000cc. These are reimbursement guidance figures, not retail quotes or predictions of what your car will cost. Your actual figures depend on the vehicle, prices and charging mix.

If you cannot charge at home, public charging may substantially affect the comparison. A home chargepoint can make home charging possible where the property is suitable, but installation feasibility and cost vary; include them in the calculation rather than assuming the equipment or its savings are universal.
Calculate energy cost for your own journeys
Use the same annual mileage and comparable vehicles. The Vehicle Certification Agency’s fuel-cost method uses combined fuel-consumption data and an average fuel price for a 10,000-mile illustration; for EVs it uses electrical consumption from the vehicle’s Certificate of Conformity. For a personal comparison, replace general assumptions with the exact trim’s official figures and prices you actually pay.

- Choose comparable cars. Match size, age, condition, range and purchase or lease terms as closely as possible. Use the exact trim, since efficiency can differ between versions.
- Get the official consumption figure. Use combined fuel economy for a petrol or diesel hybrid, or electrical consumption for an EV. WLTP figures provide a consistent basis for comparison, but may not reflect real driving; adjust your expectation using your own routes and conditions.
- Enter your actual prices. Use your local pump price for fuel and your applicable electricity tariff for charging. For an EV, separate home, workplace and public charging rather than assigning one price to every mile.
- Include how you use a plug-in hybrid. Estimate the share of miles driven on electricity and the share using fuel, based on your charging routine and journeys. A rarely charged plug-in hybrid should not be costed as though all its miles are electric.
- Calculate cost per mile and annual energy spend. Multiply the relevant cost per mile by your annual mileage. For a plug-in hybrid, add the electricity and fuel costs for their respective portions of driving.
In simple terms, fuel cost per mile depends on fuel consumed per mile and the price per unit; electricity cost per mile depends on electrical consumption per mile and the charging price. The VCA figures are useful for a consistent starting point, but your tariff, fuel price, driving pattern and real-world efficiency determine your result.

The Welsh Government’s illustrative small-car comparison, starting in 2025, estimated whole-life costs over eight years at 10,000 miles per year of £36,643 for petrol and £34,065 for electric. It is a hypothetical petrol-versus-electric example, not a hybrid comparison or current-market average; its figures use the government’s own assumptions for purchase, resale, insurance, maintenance, tax, fuel and efficiency, and exclude future price changes, inflation and mileage changes. It demonstrates why energy costs alone do not settle the ownership question.
A practical decision framework
| What to compare | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Charging access and tariff | Home, workplace and public charging can have different costs; your share of each changes EV energy spend. |
| Annual mileage and journeys | Your total distance and the type of routes determine how often you buy energy and how representative official consumption figures are. |
| Realistic efficiency | Use official combined figures as a baseline, then allow for real-world driving rather than assuming WLTP results exactly match your use. |
| Purchase or lease and resale | Upfront terms and expected value later can outweigh a difference in energy cost. |
| Maintenance, insurance and tax | These are part of ownership cost, and tax or other charges can vary by location and change over time. |
There is no supported break-even mileage that applies to every hybrid and EV. Run the calculation for the specific vehicles and prices you are considering, using your annual mileage and realistic charging or refuelling habits.
