Use this formula for a conventional hybrid SUV: annual fuel cost = (your annual miles ÷ the vehicle’s realistic miles per gallon) × your local gasoline price per gallon. Start with the exact model year, trim and drivetrain’s EPA combined rating, then adjust the MPG assumption only when your driving conditions differ from the label test.
For a useful estimate, you need four inputs: the precise vehicle configuration, annual miles, local gasoline price and an MPG figure that reflects your route. Divide the annual result by 12 for a monthly average. This estimates fuel only; purchase price, financing, insurance, maintenance, depreciation and charging equipment require separate calculations.

What the estimate tells you—and what it does not
A fuel-cost estimate converts an efficiency rating into dollars for your circumstances. It is not a promise that every fill-up will match the EPA number. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s label uses standardized assumptions, including 15,000 miles per year and projected fuel prices, so vehicles can be compared consistently. Your annual mileage, traffic, weather and fuel price may be very different.
The calculation covers gasoline used by a conventional gasoline-electric hybrid. It does not include scheduled service, tires, repairs, insurance, registration, financing, depreciation or the vehicle’s purchase price. Those costs matter to total ownership cost, but adding them to a fuel-only estimate would obscure the answer to “How much will this SUV cost me to fuel?”

Think of the result as a transparent budget, not a guaranteed bill. Fuel is purchased in uneven increments, and your monthly average can look different from the amount charged on any particular week. The value of the method is that every assumption is visible and can be changed when your driving or local prices change.
The four inputs you should record
1. Exact vehicle configuration
Record model year, trim and drivetrain. A hybrid SUV may have different ratings for front-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, wheel packages or special editions. Use the EPA combined rating for the exact configuration rather than a rating from a similar trim. If you are comparing a used vehicle, also record its engine and transmission as shown in the EPA lookup.
2. Annual miles
Use your odometer history, commuting schedule or a mileage log. Add regular commuting, school runs, errands, vacations and any trailer or recreational use that will affect the vehicle. Do not automatically substitute EPA’s 15,000-mile label assumption; it is a standard for comparison, not a forecast of your household’s driving. If your annual mileage is uncertain, calculate a low and high case rather than hiding the uncertainty.

3. Local gasoline price
Enter the price you actually expect to pay per gallon in your area. Gasoline prices vary by state, season, grade and station, so a national average can misstate your result. For budgeting, you can run the calculation at a low, typical and high price to show the range. Date the price input in your notes because a result based on one month’s price will age as the market changes.
4. A realistic MPG assumption
Begin with the EPA combined rating. Keep it when your driving resembles the label’s city/highway mix and conditions. Use a more conservative figure when most miles involve high speeds, severe cold, heavy loads, roof cargo, mountainous roads, short trips or extensive idling. There is no honest universal “real-world discount” that applies to every hybrid SUV or driver.
If you have an existing vehicle with a similar route, use several tanks of your own records as a reality check. Do not let one unusually cold tank or one long downhill trip set the assumption. A useful estimate states both the label rating and the chosen planning MPG, so another reader can reproduce or challenge the choice.
Calculate annual and monthly gasoline cost
- Estimate gallons: divide annual miles by expected MPG.
- Estimate annual dollars: multiply those gallons by your local price per gallon.
- Convert to a monthly budget: divide the annual dollars by 12.
- Check the result: compare it with several fuel-price and MPG scenarios instead of treating one number as certain.
In equation form:
Annual fuel cost = (annual miles ÷ expected MPG) × local gasoline price per gallon
For example, suppose a driver travels 13,500 miles per year, expects 36 mpg and pays $3.40 per gallon. The estimate is 375 gallons, or $1,275 per year, which averages $106.25 per month. The driver will still pay in irregular increments at the pump; the monthly figure is a budgeting average.
Round gallons and dollars only after doing the calculation. Rounding MPG too early can make two close vehicles appear farther apart than they are. Keep the unrounded result in a spreadsheet, then display dollars and cents for a reader-friendly total.

Use scenarios instead of one supposedly precise number
A small scenario table shows how sensitive the answer is to conditions you cannot control. The following figures are illustrations using 12,000 miles per year and 36 mpg; replace the price with a current local value.
| Gasoline price | Annual gallons | Annual cost | Monthly average |
|---|---|---|---|
| $3.00/gal | 333.33 | $1,000.00 | $83.33 |
| $3.50/gal | 333.33 | $1,166.67 | $97.22 |
| $4.00/gal | 333.33 | $1,333.33 | $111.11 |
At $3.50 per gallon and 36 mpg, mileage also matters: 10,000 miles costs about $972.22 per year, 12,000 miles costs about $1,166.67, and 15,000 miles costs about $1,458.33. The table makes clear why copying a label’s annual dollar figure can be misleading for a household that drives substantially more or less.

The following ratings come from an AP-published Edmunds comparison of 2025 vehicles. The dollar columns use one transparent scenario—12,000 miles per year and $3.50 per gallon—so the arithmetic can be reproduced. They are not nationwide running-cost measurements.
| Vehicle configuration | EPA combined rating | Edmunds mixed-route result | Gallons at 12,000 miles | Annual gasoline cost at $3.50/gal | Monthly average |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid | 39 mpg | 35 mpg | 307.69 | $1,076.92 | $89.74 |
| Toyota RAV4 Hybrid Woodland Edition | 37 mpg | 35 mpg | 324.32 | $1,135.14 | $94.60 |
| Hyundai Tucson Hybrid Blue | 38 mpg | 34 mpg | 315.79 | $1,105.26 | $92.11 |
| Hyundai Tucson Hybrid, other trims | 35 mpg | 34 mpg | 342.86 | $1,200.00 | $100.00 |
The ratings and route results are from the AP-published Edmunds comparison. Edmunds’ route was one mixed-driving comparison, not a universal correction factor. A different driver, climate or route can produce a different result.
Notice how the dollar difference is smaller than a casual reading of the MPG numbers might suggest. Under this scenario, the 39-mpg RAV4 uses about 34.4 fewer gallons than the 35-mpg Tucson over 12,000 miles, a difference of about $120.00 at $3.50 per gallon. If mileage or fuel price changes, that dollar gap changes too. Purchase price, financing and equipment are not part of this table.
Why your MPG can differ from the label
EPA’s gasoline-label guidance says: “This part of the label has a reminder that your fuel economy and emissions may be different due to a number of factors, such as how you drive and maintain your vehicle, how much you use air conditioning and other accessories, the weather, road conditions, how much the vehicle is loaded, and other factors.”
Recommended Free Tools
- Driving style: rapid acceleration, high cruising speeds and late braking increase energy use. Smooth acceleration and anticipating stops can help, but the effect varies by route.
- Traffic and trip length: stop-and-go congestion and repeated cold starts can lower economy. Short errands may never allow the powertrain to reach efficient operating temperatures.
- Weather: very cold or hot conditions can reduce efficiency, while winter fuel blends and snow-covered roads can add resistance.
- Road and terrain: steep grades, rough pavement and strong headwinds require more energy than a level, steady route.
- Load and accessories: passengers, cargo, roof boxes, trailers, air conditioning and other electrical accessories add demand.
- Maintenance: incorrect tire pressure, poor alignment or overdue service can reduce economy. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule and verify tire pressures when the tires are cold.
Hybrid operation can also vary as the battery state, engine temperature and regenerative braking conditions change. That does not make the label useless; it means the combined figure is an average under standardized conditions. Keep a conservative assumption visible rather than presenting an unsupported percentage reduction.
How to turn your own fuel records into a planning MPG
- At a fill-up, record odometer miles, gallons added and the price per gallon.
- For each tank, calculate miles driven since the previous fill-up divided by gallons added. This is an approximation because the tank may not be filled to exactly the same level.
- Collect several tanks across ordinary commuting, highway trips and seasonal conditions.
- Use the average of representative tanks for planning, while keeping an occasional unusually harsh or easy trip separate.
- Revisit the planning MPG when your route, tire setup, cargo or season changes.
This personal record does not replace the EPA rating for comparing vehicles. It helps you decide whether the rating is a sensible starting point for your particular use and gives you evidence for a conservative scenario.
MPG points do not have equal dollar value
Fuel consumption is based on gallons per mile, not the size of the MPG number. EPA illustrates the nonlinearity over 1,000 miles: improving from 10 to 15 mpg saves about 33 gallons, while improving from 30 to 35 mpg saves about 5 gallons. Both changes are five MPG points, but the lower-efficiency vehicle uses far more fuel to begin with.

| 35 mpg | 342.86 | $1,200.00 |
| 40 mpg | 300.00 | $1,050.00 |
Use annual gallons and dollars when comparing SUVs. A five-point rating difference is meaningful only after you apply the same mileage and fuel-price assumptions to both vehicles. At higher annual mileage, the same MPG difference produces a larger dollar difference; at lower mileage, the fuel savings may be modest compared with a purchase-price difference.
How to use EPA labels for a prospective or used SUV
EPA’s fuel-economy label guide explains the label and provides a used-vehicle lookup. The lookup accepts model year, make, model, engine and transmission. Its personalized view can apply your annual mileage, city-driving share and current fuel prices.
- Open the EPA fuel-economy label guide and choose the vehicle or used-vehicle lookup.
- Enter the model year, make, model, engine and transmission; select the exact trim or drivetrain shown.
- Record the combined, city and highway ratings and the label’s standardized annual fuel-cost estimate.
- Replace the label’s mileage and fuel-price assumptions with your own values in the personalized fields, or use the formula in this article.
- Save the configuration and assumptions with your shopping notes so that every SUV is compared on the same basis.
EPA says that, with proper maintenance, the original fuel-economy estimate remains the best indicator of a used vehicle’s average gas mileage over a typical 15-year life. That is an average indicator, not a guarantee for a neglected vehicle or an unusual driving pattern. A used SUV with damaged tires, poor alignment or a changed drivetrain should not be assumed to match an untouched example.
Estimating a plug-in hybrid SUV
A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) cannot be priced with one MPG formula because it can use grid electricity for some miles and gasoline for others. EPA labels show electric operation in MPGe and gasoline operation in MPG. Federal calculations treat electric and gasoline operation separately.
Use this two-part method:
- Estimate the miles driven electrically during the year and divide by the vehicle’s electric efficiency in miles per kilowatt-hour (or use the label’s corresponding energy-consumption figure).
- Multiply the resulting kilowatt-hours by your electricity price.
- Estimate gasoline miles and divide by the gasoline MPG rating.
- Multiply gasoline gallons by your local gasoline price.
- Add electricity and gasoline costs. Divide by 12 only after combining the two annual amounts.
Your electric-mile share depends on charging access, trip length, temperature and whether you charge consistently. Do not assume that every PHEV owner drives all short trips electrically. A driver with workplace or home charging may have a very different split from a driver who can charge only occasionally. Charging losses, utility fees and special time-of-use rates can also affect the electricity price you choose; state clearly what your quoted rate represents.
Illustrative arithmetic, not a vehicle test: assume 12,000 annual miles, 4,800 electric miles, 7,200 gasoline miles, electric efficiency of 3 miles per kilowatt-hour, electricity at $0.16 per kWh, gasoline operation at 40 mpg and gasoline at $3.50 per gallon. Electricity would cost 1,600 kWh × $0.16 = $256. Gasoline would cost 180 gallons × $3.50 = $630. The combined estimate would be $886 per year, or $73.83 per month. Replace every assumption with the PHEV’s label data and your own charging and driving pattern.
For the federal treatment of PHEV labels and fuel calculations, see EPA’s plug-in hybrid label guidance and 40 CFR § 600.311-12.

For a fair spreadsheet, put each SUV in a row and each assumption in a column. Change the shared mileage or fuel price once and let every annual-cost cell update. Add a separate column for a conservative MPG scenario rather than quietly changing one vehicle’s rating. This makes it easier to see whether a purchase decision depends on a narrow assumption.
If one SUV has a lower purchase price but higher fuel cost, or vice versa, calculate those categories separately. A fuel estimate should not silently become a total-ownership claim. You can later add financing, insurance, maintenance, depreciation and registration as distinct lines if you want a broader ownership analysis.

What a defensible estimate looks like
A credible result identifies the vehicle configuration, annual mileage, fuel price, MPG assumption and date of the price input. It shows the arithmetic, distinguishes EPA’s standardized estimate from your personal scenario and explains any conservative adjustment without pretending it is universal. For conventional hybrids, that is enough to produce a transparent gasoline budget. For PHEVs, the same discipline applies, but electricity and gasoline must be priced as separate streams.
Keep the calculation with your shopping records. When a dealer changes the trim, when you switch from front-wheel drive to all-wheel drive, or when your commute changes, update the configuration rather than carrying over an old MPG figure. A short note such as “12,000 miles, $3.50 gasoline, 36 planning mpg, price checked June 2026” makes the estimate auditable months later.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use the EPA combined MPG or the city rating?
Use the combined rating as the starting point for a mixed household route. If nearly all of your miles are urban, highway, short-trip or otherwise unlike the label mix, choose a conservative planning MPG and explain why. Do not substitute a city or highway number automatically without considering your actual route.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIs the EPA annual fuel-cost number my likely yearly bill?
No. It is a standardized comparison estimate based on label assumptions such as 15,000 miles and projected fuel prices. Recalculate with your own annual miles, local price and realistic MPG for a personal budget.
How many tanks should I track before changing my estimate?
Use several representative tanks across normal commuting and seasonal conditions. One tank can be distorted by weather, a long trip, traffic or an unusually high fill level. Your records are a planning check, not a replacement for the exact EPA configuration rating.
Why did my hybrid SUV miss its combined rating on a highway trip?
High speeds, headwinds, cold weather, roof cargo, passengers, rough roads, tire pressure and air-conditioning use can all reduce economy. The combined label value is an average under standardized conditions, not a guarantee for every trip.
How do I compare a conventional hybrid with a plug-in hybrid?
For the conventional hybrid, multiply annual gasoline miles divided by MPG by the gasoline price. For the PHEV, separately estimate electric miles and gasoline miles, price the electricity and gasoline, then add the two annual costs. Include charging access and the expected electric-mile share.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteDoes a five-MPG advantage always save a lot of money?
No. MPG is nonlinear. EPA’s example shows that moving from 10 to 15 mpg saves about 33 gallons over 1,000 miles, while moving from 30 to 35 mpg saves about 5 gallons. Convert each vehicle to annual gallons and dollars for your mileage.
What costs are excluded from this estimate?
The calculation covers fuel energy only. Purchase price, financing, insurance, registration, maintenance, tires, repairs, depreciation and charging equipment are separate ownership costs.
Can I use the original EPA rating for a used hybrid SUV?
EPA says that, with proper maintenance, the original fuel-economy estimate remains the best indicator of average gas mileage over a typical 15-year life. Treat it as an average indicator and adjust your planning MPG for the vehicle’s condition and your driving pattern.
The Bottom Line
For a conventional hybrid SUV, calculate (annual miles ÷ realistic MPG) × local gasoline price, then divide by 12 for a monthly budget. Use the exact EPA configuration, your own mileage and current local price; show a conservative scenario when your route or conditions differ. For a plug-in hybrid, price electric and gasoline miles separately. The result is a fuel estimate—not total ownership cost.
