Those arrangements are not interchangeable. An Eco setting may only soften accelerator response, while a Trail or low-range setting can coordinate torque, braking and wheel slip. Select a mode from the exact vehicle’s owner’s manual, model year and drivetrain—not from the mode name alone.
What a hybrid 4×4 SUV is actually combining
Two separate systems are involved: the hybrid powertrain and the mechanism that sends torque to the wheels. A hybrid powertrain can use the gasoline engine, one or more electric traction motors, a battery and regenerative braking in changing combinations. The vehicle’s software decides when to start the engine, draw from the battery, recover energy or blend those sources.

Engine, motor and battery power flow
Toyota’s 2026 Land Cruiser owner’s manual illustrates the conditional nature of hybrid operation. At launch, at low speeds and during gentle downhill travel, the traction motor may propel the vehicle while the gasoline engine is stopped. In ordinary driving, the engine is used predominantly and may also charge the hybrid battery. During sharp acceleration, battery-powered motor output can supplement engine power. When you brake, the traction motor can operate as a generator and send recovered energy to the battery.
Those are operating possibilities, not guarantees. Temperature, battery charge, speed, demand, charging strategy and other control conditions can keep the engine running when a driver expects it to stop. “Electric mode” therefore does not mean a fixed speed range or a promise that the engine will remain off.

How hybrid AWD adds a second torque path
Some hybrid SUVs use an electronically controlled rear-drive contribution instead of a mechanical propeller shaft and transfer case. In the 2025 Crown Signia, Toyota calls this E-Four an “Electronic On-Demand AWD system.” Its controls vary front/rear torque according to conditions such as cornering, hills, starting, acceleration and slippery roads. The vehicle can therefore change how much rear-wheel assistance is requested without the driver selecting a traditional low-range gear.
This arrangement is one manufacturer’s design, not a universal definition of hybrid AWD. The Crown Signia manual also warns that an overheated AWD system can temporarily disengage and operate in 2WD. Extra traction is conditional and has thermal and mechanical limits; it is not an unlimited substitute for suitable tires, clearance or careful driving.
AWD versus 4WD: the hardware difference
“AWD,” “4WD” and “4×4” are often used as marketing shorthand, but the driver controls can describe very different hardware. Identify the torque path before interpreting a mode.

Neither layout is automatically “better.” On-demand AWD can make day-to-day driving simple, while a transfer case gives a driver explicit high- and low-range choices for demanding terrain. A mode name cannot tell you which hardware is installed.
Drive-mode names do not mean the same thing
A drive mode may alter accelerator and powertrain response, or it may coordinate AWD, braking and drive force for a surface. Some modes do both. The 2025 Corolla Cross Hybrid, 2024 Highlander Hybrid and 2024 Grand Highlander Hybrid demonstrate why the owner’s manual matters.

Which mode should you use?
Normal for ordinary paved driving
Use Normal when you want the balanced calibration described for the Corolla Cross Hybrid: predictable response, quietness and efficiency without a terrain-specific intervention. It is the sensible default for dry streets, commuting and routine highway travel when your vehicle’s manual identifies it as the ordinary-road setting.

Eco for smoother inputs and efficiency priorities
Select Eco when you prefer gentler accelerator response and efficiency-oriented climate-control behavior. You may need more pedal movement for the same acceleration. Do not select Eco to solve wheel spin on snow, mud or sand; its purpose is response and energy management, not a substitute for traction control or a terrain program.

Power or Sport when response matters
Power or Sport is appropriate when you want a quicker-feeling accelerator response, such as when merging or driving on a winding road. It does not create additional tire grip. If the road is slippery, use the traction or terrain instructions in your manual and moderate your speed rather than assuming Sport is safer.
Trail and multi-terrain settings on loose or uneven surfaces
Use a vehicle-specific Trail or Multi-terrain setting only for the surfaces and conditions listed by that vehicle’s manual. Toyota’s Highlander Hybrid quick guide presents Trail as assistance on bumpy roads; the Grand Highlander Hybrid manual identifies Mud & Sand and Rock & Dirt for corresponding rough or loose surfaces.

These systems may coordinate AWD torque, braking and drive force to help the vehicle maintain movement. They do not expand the physical limits of the SUV. Tires, sidewall strength, ground clearance, approach and departure angles, water depth, slope, payload and driver judgment still determine whether a route is safe. If the tires are sliding or the vehicle is approaching an obstacle, reduce speed and reassess instead of expecting the selected mode to overcome it.

The following explanation applies to the full-time 4WD configuration covered by the 2025 Tacoma Hybrid owner’s manual. It should not be transferred to another trim, drivetrain or model.

- H4F: the normal setting for dry, hard-surfaced roads.
- H4L: for surfaces that permit tire slip, such as off-road tracks, ice or snow.
- L4L: the low-range setting for maximum power and traction on steep hills or demanding sand, mud or deep snow.
Low range changes the gearing available to the wheels; it is not simply a more aggressive accelerator map. It is intended for controlled, difficult terrain at low speed, not normal dry pavement.

Tacoma-specific shifting limits
The Tacoma manual says to stop wheel slip before shifting from H4F to H4L. For the H4L-to-L4L shift, it requires the vehicle to be stopped, the brake pedal held and the shift lever in N. Follow the instrument-panel confirmation and any additional sequence in that manual. Do not use this procedure as a generic instruction for another SUV: transfer-case designs, shift interlocks and required speeds differ.
A practical mode-selection checklist
- Identify the drivetrain. Confirm the model year, trim and whether the vehicle has on-demand AWD, a selectable transfer case or another arrangement.
- Match the surface. Dry pavement, packed snow, loose sand, mud, rocks and a steep grade can require different settings—or no special setting at all.
- Separate response from traction. Eco, Normal and Sport generally describe how the vehicle responds to the accelerator and climate demands; Trail or multi-terrain settings may also coordinate wheel torque and braking.
- Check shift restrictions. Before selecting a transfer-case range, read the manual for required speed, stopping, brake application, neutral selection and wheel-slip limits.
- Drive within the vehicle’s limits. A mode cannot compensate for worn or unsuitable tires, insufficient clearance, excessive speed, a hazardous slope or conditions beyond the SUV’s design.
- React to warnings. If an AWD or hybrid-system warning appears, or the system indicates overheating, reduce demand and follow the manual’s instructions. AWD may temporarily disengage to protect itself.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming every hybrid AWD system has a 4L setting
Many electronically managed AWD systems have no transfer-case low range. Do not look for L4L in a vehicle whose manual describes only automatic rear-drive assistance.
Choosing Sport for extra traction
Sport or Power changes the requested response in the Corolla Cross Hybrid example. It does not establish a traction advantage. On slippery roads, use the manufacturer’s traction or terrain guidance and drive gently.
Treating a terrain mode as permission to drive faster
Trail, Mud & Sand and Rock & Dirt are assistance strategies, not licenses to exceed safe speed or the vehicle’s limits. The Grand Highlander Hybrid manual explicitly frames its surface descriptions as reference guidance.
Copying another model’s shift sequence
The Tacoma’s stopped-vehicle, brake-held, neutral requirement for the L4L shift is specific to that configuration. A different SUV can require a different sequence or prohibit a shift under different conditions. Use the manual stored for your exact vehicle, not a similarly named model.
Bottom line for hybrid 4×4 drivers
Start by identifying the hardware, then select the mode whose documented purpose matches the road. Hybrid AWD can automatically vary rear torque, while transfer-case 4WD offers explicit high- and low-range choices. Eco, Normal and Sport primarily change response and efficiency behavior; Trail and multi-terrain programs may coordinate torque and braking; L4L is a specific low-range function in the cited Tacoma configuration. None of these settings replaces appropriate tires, cautious speed or the exact model-year owner’s manual.
