The Hummer H2H was a 2004 experimental H2 SUT modified to burn gaseous hydrogen in a supercharged 6.0-liter Vortec V8. It was not a fuel-cell vehicle, and GM said it was not intended for production. The concept was built to draw attention to hydrogen and help GM learn about hydrogen storage, delivery systems and refueling infrastructure.
What was the Hummer H2H?
The H2H was a modified version of the Hummer H2 SUT, not a clean-sheet vehicle or a retail hydrogen Hummer. GM presented it in 2004 as an experimental vehicle intended to demonstrate hydrogen technology and support engineering work. The contemporaneous announcement, reproduced by The Auto Channel, explicitly said it was “not intended for production.”
Was the Hummer H2H a fuel-cell vehicle?
No. The H2H burned hydrogen in an internal-combustion engine. GM described a supercharged version of the H2’s Vortec 6000, a 6.0-liter V8, modified to operate on gaseous hydrogen. It was still an engine-based vehicle, not an electric vehicle driven by power from a fuel cell.
A hydrogen fuel cell works differently: hydrogen and oxygen react electrochemically to produce DC electrical power, which can supply an electric drivetrain. GM outlines that process in its hydrogen fuel-cell overview. The H2H did not use that propulsion path.

Why did GM build it?
GM gave the project two goals: attract public attention to the transition toward a hydrogen economy, and gain practical experience with hydrogen storage, delivery systems and refueling infrastructure. In the announcement, GM vice president for Environment & Energy Elizabeth Lowery described those aims as the H2H’s two purposes.
The infrastructure challenge was part of the period’s wider hydrogen work. The U.S. Department of Energy recorded the opening of an integrated gasoline-and-hydrogen station in Washington, DC, on November 10, 2004. It supported GM fuel-cell vehicles in a DOE demonstration and was described as the first deployment in a projected Washington-to-New York hydrogen corridor. The DOE account is context for the era; it does not establish that the station refueled the H2H.

What was the H2H’s range or horsepower?
The sources cited here do not establish an H2H-specific range, horsepower, fuel-economy or acceleration figure. The engine’s displacement is identified as 6.0 liters in GM’s 2004 announcement, but that is not enough to infer the vehicle’s performance. Figures from other Hummer models, hydrogen prototypes or fuel-cell vehicles should not be presented as H2H specifications.
What did GM mean by its emissions claim?
GM’s announcement said the H2H’s main tailpipe emission was water vapor. That is a narrow statement about the vehicle’s exhaust, not proof of zero emissions across the hydrogen’s production, processing and delivery. The announcement does not establish the lifecycle emissions of the hydrogen used by the concept.

How does the H2H fit into GM’s hydrogen history?
The H2H belongs to GM’s early-2000s experiments with hydrogen combustion. It should not be confused with GM’s later fuel-cell program: the company’s retrospective account describes a fleet of more than 100 Chevrolet Equinox Fuel Cell vehicles in 2007 and gives that distinct vehicle a 200-mile range. Those figures apply to the Equinox Fuel Cell, not the H2H.
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, quoted in the 2004 announcement, called the H2H “a bold experiment” tied to California’s Hydrogen Highway Network. The phrasing captures its role: a technology demonstrator intended to build awareness and provide engineering lessons, rather than a preview of a production Hummer.
