A wood-gas truck carried a small fuel-making plant wherever it went: a bulky generator turned solid wood into combustible gas, which was cooled and filtered before being fed to the engine. It could keep a vehicle moving when gasoline was scarce, but the trade-off was less power, heavy fuel logistics and a more demanding operating routine.
How did a car run on wood?
It did not burn logs directly in the engine. A vehicle-mounted gasifier heated wood in a restricted-oxygen environment, producing a combustible gas commonly called producer gas or wood gas. The gas had to pass through equipment that prepared and filtered it before entering the engine.
From solid fuel to engine
On its 1943 Opel Blitz exhibit, Technik Museum Sinsheim describes a generator mounted at the rear, a filter at the front and a gas line leading to the engine. The generator gasified the wood under low-oxygen conditions; the resulting gas was routed through the filter and into the engine. That layout made the truck visibly different from a gasoline vehicle, and the generator, filter and piping were essential parts of its fuel system, not optional accessories. Why filtering and operation mattered
Raw smoke was not simply piped into the engine. Gasifier design, fuel size and condition, ignition, filtering and regular servicing all affected whether the system could supply usable gas. A 1943 Imbert vehicle manual covers equipment, startup, travel, servicing and safety; a later Oak Ridge National Laboratory report describes fabrication and operation of a simplified downdraft gasifier. Those documents show that wood-gas driving required its own operating knowledge, rather than just a different fuel tank. Why put a gasifier on a vehicle?
The main appeal was fuel availability, not superior performance. When petroleum was scarce or uncertain, solid biomass offered a locally obtainable substitute for some transport. The arrangement appeared in different national settings, but the evidence points to specific programs and exhibits rather than a single, reliably measured worldwide fleet total.
Europe: early use and wartime need
The Louwman Museum dates commercial wood-gas-powered cars to as early as the 1920s and associates their development with France. Its account also describes wartime pressure on wood resources and restrictions on further generator production. In the United Kingdom, a 9 December 1941 House of Lords record quotes the Hartley Committee’s conditional conclusion: “Provided suitable equipment and fuels are used, producer gas can be regarded as a practicable alternative fuel for motor vehicles, and can be recommended for use in an emergency for certain types of road transport.” The qualification matters: the committee recommended it for emergency use in certain transport contexts, not as a general replacement for petrol. Japan: research into petroleum substitutes
Toyota’s corporate history places wood- and charcoal-gas generators within broader Japanese research into substitutes for imported petroleum. It says the Japanese government began promoting such generators in 1934 and recounts Toyota-related development work. The history also records a contemporary estimate that firewood could cost less than gasoline under the prices then prevailing; that was a historical economic argument tied to its own market conditions, not a guide to present-day fuel costs. Sweden and the Soviet Union: broader institutional interest
A Food and Agriculture Organization chapter links Swedish interest in wood and charcoal gasifiers to emergency planning for transport fuel supply and includes a table of producer-gas vehicle fleets for 1933–1945. Separately, the GAZ Museum’s account of its plant history records a wood-gas-generator shop among facilities established during the automaker’s 1930s expansion. What drivers gave up
A gasifier could make scarce liquid fuel less essential, but it did not make a vehicle equivalent to its gasoline-powered counterpart. The following figures are tied to particular historical sources and should not be treated as universal conversion rates or modern test results.
Lower output on the 1943 Opel Blitz
Technik Museum Sinsheim gives the Opel Blitz’s output as 68 hp on gasoline and 30–45 hp on wood gas, depending on the type of wood. More fuel to carry and prepare
Toyota’s corporate history recounts a period estimate for a loaded two-ton truck traveling 100 km: 20–25 liters of gasoline, or 40–50 kg of firewood. The account relays a contemporary Japanese technical estimate; it is not a controlled modern comparison. The quantities show why wood supply, storage and preparation were central practical concerns: the vehicle needed substantially more mass of solid fuel for the cited journey, as well as equipment to convert it into gas. Extra equipment and attention
Compared with ordinary gasoline operation, a wood-gas vehicle added a generator, gas-cleaning equipment, fuel handling and operating steps. The surviving manuals’ coverage of startup, travel, servicing and safety reflects those demands. The fuel’s historical availability might justify the burden in an emergency, but the sources do not establish a current cost advantage or modern road-use suitability.

What the historical record can—and cannot—show
Wood-gas vehicles were a practical response to constrained fuel supply in several countries, not a universally efficient technology. Museum exhibits, company histories, parliamentary records and technical documents establish how systems worked and why institutions considered them. They do not provide a consistently scoped primary count for a single worldwide peak fleet, so broad global totals should not be treated as settled here.
The technical record remains accessible in a wartime Imbert vehicle manual and in ORNL’s 1989 report, Construction of a simplified wood gas generator for fueling internal combustion engines in a petroleum emergency. These are useful historical and engineering references, not evidence that a particular design is currently approved, safe or legal for road use. ORNL report record and 1943 Imbert manual
