Wayne Rainey returned to a race bike at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, riding his 1992 championship-winning Yamaha YZR500 up the hill climb. Yamaha adapted the motorcycle so he could operate it using handlebar controls alone. The ride came nearly 30 years after a 1993 crash left him paralyzed from the chest down—but it was not his first motorcycle ride since the crash.
What happened at Goodwood in 2022?
Goodwood announced on February 23, 2022, that Rainey would ride at that year’s Festival of Speed, held June 23–26. The event recap described it as his first ride on a race-specification motorcycle in almost 30 years. The announcement’s phrase “29 years” referred to the interval between his 1993 crash and the planned 2022 ride, not a current countdown. MotoAmerica’s June 24 recap of Yamaha’s account and its report of Goodwood’s February announcement document the event.
At Goodwood, Rainey rode his own 1992 Yamaha YZR500 up the hill climb. The bike was adapted to be operated using handlebar controls alone. The available accounts do not give a detailed engineering specification, so they do not establish exactly how the controls were configured or whether a similar conversion is commercially available.
Why was the ride significant?
Rainey won the 500cc Grand Prix World Championship three consecutive times, from 1990 through 1992, riding for Yamaha. His racing career ended after a crash at Misano during the 1993 Italian Grand Prix left him paralyzed from the chest down. The Goodwood ride put him back on the championship-winning model associated with that era of his career. MotoGP’s February 2022 report also identifies Rainey as MotoAmerica’s president.

Had Rainey ridden a motorcycle since the crash?
Yes. The Goodwood ride was his return to a racing bike, not his first time back on a motorcycle. The 2022 announcement says he first returned to riding in 2019 at the Sound of Engine Festival in Suzuka. The distinction matters: Goodwood marked his return to a race-specification motorcycle after nearly three decades, while his return to motorcycle riding had already happened.
What did Rainey say about the ride?
In Yamaha’s account, as reproduced by MotoAmerica on June 24, 2022, Rainey described riding the hill and corners on his Grand Prix bike and sharing the experience with Kenny, Kevin and Mick: “Being able to ride up the hill and through the corners, looking down and seeing that I was on my Grand Prix bike again after all those years felt like I was in a completely different world, and to do it alongside those guys, Kenny, Kevin and Mick, I could not have asked more than sharing this experience with them.”

What the accounts establish about the adaptation
The published event reports establish the key point: Yamaha reconfigured Rainey’s YZR500 so he could control it from the handlebars. They do not provide design drawings, a full list of modifications, or evidence of a production conversion kit. The ride was a specific adaptation of Rainey’s historic race bike for the Goodwood event, not evidence that the motorcycle or its modification was offered for sale.
