The most useful car accessories solve a specific problem: a roadside breakdown, a tire check, poor visibility, or a passenger’s needs. This US-focused list includes 23 options and resources, but not every driver needs every item. Choose for your vehicle, the trips you take, and the equipment already installed; follow the owner’s manual and each product’s instructions. Accessories can support safe driving, but they do not replace attentive driving or routine maintenance.

Emergency readiness: accessories for a breakdown

Even a well-maintained vehicle can break down. NHTSA recommends carrying an emergency roadside kit; its suggested contents provide a useful starting point, not a requirement to buy a prepacked kit or carry every item. See NHTSA’s road-trip guidance and tailor supplies to your vehicle, passengers, route, and storage space.

  1. Emergency roadside kit

A kit keeps key supplies together so they are easier to find when you need them. Check its contents against your own needs, and make sure the kit fits securely in the vehicle without blocking access to essential equipment.

  2. Jumper cables

NHTSA includes jumper cables in its suggested kit. Read the vehicle manual before attempting a jump start; vehicle-specific procedures and electrical systems can differ.

Tires and routine checks

The right tools help you check tire condition, but the vehicle’s recommended pressure—not the maximum pressure molded on the tire—is the figure to use. NHTSA advises checking tires when cold and including the spare. Its TireWise guidance also explains that a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is not a substitute for regular checks: it warns when a tire is significantly underinflated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Tire pressure gauge

Use a gauge to check pressure against the vehicle placard or owner’s manual. Check tires cold, including the spare if your vehicle has one, and follow the vehicle’s recommended pressure rather than the tire sidewall maximum.

  2. Portable tire inflator

An inflator can be a convenient way to correct low pressure when appropriate. It does not inspect a tire for damage or replace tire service; if a tire is damaged or will not hold pressure, have it assessed rather than relying on repeated inflation.

  3. Vehicle-compatible spare tire and changing equipment

Some vehicles have a spare; others may have different equipment or no spare. Check what your vehicle actually carries and consult the manual for compatibility and use. NHTSA advises checking tires, including the spare, and inspecting the vehicle before a long trip.

Visibility, controls, and driving aids

Small fit problems can create meaningful hazards. Inspect visibility equipment and cabin accessories, and make sure add-ons do not interfere with the driver’s view or controls.

  1. Replacement windshield wiper blades

Worn blades can compromise visibility in rain. Inspect them before a trip and replace them when worn, checking the correct size and attachment for your vehicle.

  2. Vehicle-fit floor mats

Choose mats sized for the specific vehicle and secured as intended. A mat that shifts, stacks over another mat, or contacts the accelerator or brake can interfere with pedal operation. Verify fit and retention after installation.

A backup camera, if your vehicle has one, is a driving aid rather than a complete view of the area behind the vehicle. NHTSA notes that children, pets, and objects can remain outside the camera’s view. Look around the vehicle as well, including before backing up. More broadly, NHTSA’s safe-driving features guidance describes safety features as support for safe driving, not a replacement for driver choices.

Passenger needs and child restraints

For families, restraint choice depends on the child’s age and size, the vehicle, and the seat’s instructions. NHTSA offers guidance for selecting and installing child restraints, along with car-seat ease-of-use ratings and inspection resources.

  1. Age- and size-appropriate child car seat

Select a restraint appropriate for the child and use it according to both the seat and vehicle instructions. A seat that fits the child and can be installed correctly is more useful than choosing by appearance or convenience alone.

  2. Booster seat

For a child who needs a booster, follow the child’s size and the booster and vehicle instructions. NHTSA’s ease-of-use information can help families compare options and understand installation features.

  3. Car-seat inspection and recall-check resources

This is a resource rather than a physical accessory, but it can help verify safe use. Use NHTSA’s inspection-station information to find help and its recall resources to check applicable equipment; confirm current information for the specific seat.

Navigation and trip convenience

  1. Maps

NHTSA includes maps among its road-trip supplies and advises reviewing directions even when using GPS. A paper map can be a useful backup if a device loses power or signal; review it before driving rather than while the vehicle is moving.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  2. Windshield washer fluid

NHTSA recommends carrying extra washer fluid. Use fluid suitable for the vehicle and conditions, and check the manual for any relevant instructions.

How to choose what belongs in your vehicle

  • Start with the vehicle: Check the owner’s manual, tire placard, existing equipment, and storage space. Do not buy a duplicate feature or assume equipment fits because it is described as universal.
  • Match the item to your actual use: Consider routine commuting, long-distance travel, weather, passengers, and whether you would know how to use the item safely.
  • Verify fit and secure storage: Check exact vehicle compatibility for mats, wiper blades, jacks, spares, and charging accessories. Stow loose equipment so it cannot obstruct controls or become a hazard.
  • Use official guidance for safety-critical choices: For tires, follow NHTSA’s cold-pressure guidance and the vehicle recommendation. For child restraints, consult NHTSA’s selection, ease-of-use, and inspection resources.
  • Do not treat equipment as a guarantee: A kit, camera, tire monitor, or repair supply cannot prevent every breakdown or crash. NHTSA’s safety-feature guidance emphasizes that safe driving still depends on driver choices.
