Vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging lets a compatible electric vehicle send energy from its traction battery to household circuits. The vehicle, bidirectional EV charging equipment, home integration hardware, controls and installation all have to be approved to work together; a normal one-way charger or a matching plug is not enough.
During an outage, the home system disconnects or isolates the house from the utility grid, then routes vehicle power to the circuits the equipment is designed to support. Runtime and available load depend on the vehicle battery, household demand and the specific installation.

What vehicle-to-home charging means
Most EV charging is one-way: electricity moves from the home supply through electric-vehicle supply equipment (EVSE) into the vehicle. V2H adds controlled reverse power flow. A bidirectional EV can accept energy from EVSE and discharge energy to an external load, while compatible power electronics convert and manage that energy for the home.

V2H is specifically about supplying a home. Vehicle-to-building (V2B) applies the same concept to a commercial or institutional building. Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) sends energy back through the utility connection and is a separate, more regulated use case.
How the energy path changes
Normal charging
In ordinary operation, the service panel supplies the EVSE. The EVSE and vehicle control charging current, and the vehicle stores the incoming energy in its high-voltage battery. Electricity does not flow back toward the house.
V2H discharge
In V2H operation, the vehicle’s battery supplies direct-current energy to bidirectional conversion equipment. The charger and home integration equipment convert and regulate that energy, then feed selected circuits or the home’s electrical system. Software and controls coordinate charging, discharging, limits and operating modes.

Its rated output also limits how many appliances can run simultaneously. A physically compatible connector does not prove that the vehicle, charger, inverter, controls and home equipment support reverse power.
What happens when the grid fails
For backup, the integration equipment follows the manufacturer’s transfer and isolation design. It disconnects the backed-up portion of the home from the utility so vehicle energy cannot be pushed onto a de-energized line. The system then energizes the circuits it is configured to support.
Transfer time, the circuits that remain powered, maximum continuous output and control behavior vary by product and installation. Do not assume that every V2H system powers every circuit, starts every motor load or runs an entire house without limits.

Equipment required for a working V2H system
- A V2H-capable EV: The vehicle’s battery, inverter interface and software must allow controlled discharge.
- Bidirectional EVSE or charger: A conventional one-way home charger cannot be assumed to support discharge.
- Home integration equipment: This may include an inverter, transfer or isolation hardware, a backup-load panel, a home hub and monitoring controls.
- Controls and communications: The vehicle, charger and home equipment may require firmware, an app, network connectivity or service activation.
- Approved electrical installation: Wiring, overcurrent protection, grounding, disconnects and panel configuration must comply with the manufacturer’s instructions and local code.
DOE’s January 2025 V2X assessment identifies bidirectional vehicles, V2X-capable EVSE, and software and controls as core deployment elements. The complete system—not a plug shape or marketing label—establishes compatibility.
Compatibility checklist before buying anything
Check every item below with the vehicle and equipment manufacturers. If one element is unsupported, the proposed configuration may charge the vehicle but still be unable to provide home backup.
- Identify the exact vehicle: Record make, model, model year, trim and battery configuration. Capability can differ within a model range.
- Confirm bidirectional discharge: Ask whether the vehicle is approved for V2H, not merely fast charging or solar charging.
- Match the EVSE: Verify the exact bidirectional charger model, required cable and communication protocol.
- Match home integration hardware: Confirm the inverter, transfer or isolation device, backup panel and any hub or enablement kit.
- Check software and activation: Determine whether firmware, an account, a subscription, internet access or a service appointment is required.
- Define backed-up loads: Obtain the system’s continuous and peak power ratings and identify which circuits will be connected.
- Verify location and approvals: Ask the installer and utility about permits, inspection, interconnection rules and local availability.
DOE consumer guidance distinguishes connector compatibility from bidirectional capability. Therefore, a vehicle that physically plugs into a charger is not automatically a V2H vehicle.
Documented system examples
F-150 Lightning with Ford equipment
Ford documents a home-backup configuration pairing the F-150 Lightning with the Ford Charge Station Pro and Ford Home Integration System. In this arrangement, the Home Integration System manages the power path and disconnects the home from the grid during an outage. Ford also documents possible solar integration for the configuration.
The Charge Station Pro is only one component. The compatible Lightning vehicle, Home Integration System, related hardware and professional installation are also required. Ford’s published fact sheet states that the Home Integration System and related hardware and installation are extra; it does not establish a universal price for every property.

How to plan an installation
1. Establish the loads that matter
List the circuits you need during an outage, such as refrigeration, lighting, communications, heating controls, a well pump or medical equipment. Note each appliance’s running wattage and starting surge. The installer can then determine whether those circuits fit the integration equipment’s continuous and peak output.
2. Choose the manufacturer-approved combination
Use the vehicle manufacturer’s compatibility documentation to match the EV, charger, integration hardware and software. Do not mix components solely because they use the same charging connector or nominal voltage.

A contractor should inspect the main service, panel capacity, grounding, disconnect locations, conductor routes and the proposed backup panel. The design must include a reliable method of isolating the home from the utility during islanded operation.
4. Resolve permits and utility questions
Residential electrical work is governed by local code and permitting. The DOE Alternative Fuels Data Center recommends nationally recognized testing-laboratory-certified equipment and a certified electrical contractor for home charging, while directing owners to local requirements. V2H projects can add inspection, utility notification or approval requirements.
5. Commission and test the system
After installation, the contractor should verify charging, discharge, transfer behavior, grid isolation, monitoring, fault handling and restoration when utility service returns. Ask for written confirmation of the backed-up circuits, operating limits and required maintenance or software activation.

How long can an EV power a home?
There is no universal runtime figure. A simple estimate is usable vehicle energy divided by household energy consumption, but real operation also depends on the inverter’s output limit, appliance starting loads, reserve settings, temperature and whether the system rations power.

Ford and Sunrun published a 2022-era example for an F-150 Lightning with the optional extended-range battery: up to 131 kWh of electric energy storage and up to 10 days for an average-size home under stated assumptions of 30 kWh per day, power rationing and a properly equipped home. Those are manufacturer assumptions for that configuration, not a general V2H result. Actual duration varies with the home, weather, loads and system settings.
Energy capacity and power capacity are different. A large battery may store substantial energy, but the charger and home equipment still impose a maximum instantaneous output. A high-draw appliance can exceed that limit even when plenty of battery energy remains.
V2H, V2B and V2G are not interchangeable
| Use case | Where energy goes | What must be checked |
|---|---|---|
| V2H | Household circuits or the home electrical system | Vehicle, bidirectional EVSE, home integration equipment, isolation design, permits and backed-up load limits |
| V2B | A commercial, institutional or other building | Building distribution design, controls, protection, operating agreement and equipment ratings |
| V2G | Back through the utility interconnection to the grid | Utility interconnection agreement, program rules, protection requirements, approval and compensation terms |
An EV that can provide home backup is not automatically authorized to export to the grid. DOE advises checking with the serving utility to determine whether its interconnection agreements permit EV reverse power flow. Utility programs, approval processes and compensation differ by jurisdiction.

Some manufacturer systems can coordinate an EV with rooftop solar or stationary storage, but the exact operating sequence is product-specific. Solar may charge the home, charge the vehicle or support loads through the integration equipment, depending on the approved configuration and controls. A stationary battery may provide additional storage or power balancing where the manufacturer supports it.
Do not assume that adding solar panels or a battery makes an otherwise incompatible EV bidirectional. Confirm the complete wiring diagram, islanding behavior, charge priorities and software support with the manufacturer and installer.

Safety, code and outage behavior
- Use equipment certified by a nationally recognized testing laboratory where required by local rules.
- Use the manufacturer-approved charger, inverter, transfer equipment and firmware combination.
- Have a certified electrical contractor perform the work and obtain required permits.
- Verify that the system prevents energizing utility lines during an outage.
- Ask which circuits are excluded, including large heating, cooking, vehicle-charging or motor loads.
- Keep access to disconnects and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for emergency shutdown.
Never improvise a connection from an EV to a household receptacle or service panel. Portable adapters and extension cords that are suitable for one-way charging do not create a compliant bidirectional backup system.
Common problems and what they mean
The vehicle charges but will not discharge
Charging capability alone does not establish V2H support. Check the vehicle trim and battery, charger model, firmware, activation status and whether the home integration system is online and in its permitted operating mode.
Only some appliances work
The system may be intentionally connected to a backed-up-load panel, or the active loads may exceed its output rating. Review the installer’s circuit schedule and turn off high-demand appliances before adding another load.
The system does not operate during an outage
Possible causes include an incomplete grid-isolation test, a tripped protection device, unavailable communications, an unapproved operating mode or a required service activation. Follow the manufacturer’s fault procedure and contact the installer rather than bypassing protective equipment.
Grid export is unavailable
Home backup and grid export have different approvals. Even if the vehicle and charger can discharge, the utility may not permit reverse power flow or may require a separate interconnection agreement.
How to compare complete V2H systems
| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Vehicle compatibility | Which exact models, model years, trims and battery configurations are approved? |
| Hardware package | Are the bidirectional charger, inverter, home hub, isolation device and enablement kit included? |
| Backup capability | What are continuous and peak output ratings, and which circuits can be backed up? |
| Transfer and isolation | How does the system disconnect from the grid, and what testing or inspection is required? |
| Solar or storage integration | Can the system coordinate solar or a stationary battery, and under what operating modes? |
| Installation and approvals | Which permits, utility approvals, software activation and contractor qualifications apply locally? |
| Availability and total cost | Are all components available in your region, and what is the installed cost after site-specific work? |
Reliable like-for-like installed pricing is not established across these systems because equipment, electrical upgrades, labor and local requirements vary. Request a written quote that separates hardware, installation, permits, utility fees and any activation or service charges.
Bottom line for EV owners
V2H works when a bidirectional EV, compatible bidirectional charger, home integration equipment, controls and a code-compliant installation are designed as one system. Start with the exact vehicle and battery configuration, define the circuits you need in an outage, and obtain manufacturer and utility confirmation before purchasing hardware. Treat runtime figures as configuration-specific estimates, and treat grid export as a separate approval question rather than an automatic feature.
