How Turbocharged Engines Have Evolved Since Their Invention

Turbocharging began with Alfred Büchi’s 1905 concept, developed first in aviation, marine and diesel applications, and reached passenger cars in stages.

Turbocharging began as a way to use exhaust energy to force more air into an engine. Alfred Büchi’s 1905 patent is the accepted starting point, but the technology first developed for aircraft, ships and heavy-duty diesels—not family cars. Passenger-car use arrived in stages: the 1962 Oldsmobile Jetfire was an early production milestone, while broader adoption gathered pace later as automakers sought power from smaller engines.

What a turbocharger does—and what changed over time

A turbocharger uses exhaust flow to spin a turbine connected to a compressor. The compressor pushes more air into the engine, allowing it to burn more fuel and produce more power than an engine of similar displacement could otherwise make. The basic principle dates to Büchi’s patent, but engineers have spent the ensuing decades adapting turbochargers to different engines, operating conditions and applications.

That history is not a straight progression toward one universally best design. A turbocharger for an aircraft or heavy-duty diesel has different demands from one intended to make a passenger car responsive across everyday driving conditions.

How turbocharging developed

1905: Alfred Büchi’s patent

Swiss engineer Alfred Büchi is credited with inventing the turbocharger. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) uses 1905 as the starting point in its history; Porsche’s 2005 centenary announcement dates Büchi’s patent to 16 November 1905. The central idea was to recover energy from exhaust gases to drive a compressor, rather than relying only on engine power to move more air. NHTSA history; Porsche’s 2005 announcement.

1910s–1920s: aviation, marine and large diesel applications

Early practical development focused on applications where forced induction could meet demanding power needs. NHTSA describes the prewar market as principally aviation, marine and heavy-duty diesel. An SAE historical paper says French professor Auguste Rateau built and operated an axial-turbine turbocharger in 1917.

In 1925, Büchi’s multi-entry turbine work used exhaust pulses to improve low-speed and transient operation, according to a later SAE paper. This was an engineering response to how an engine delivered exhaust energy—not evidence of passenger-car adoption at the time. 1950s–1960s: commercial diesels and an early production-car milestone

NHTSA says suppliers developed commercial turbochargers for compact, light, high-speed diesel engines in the early 1950s. In a 1966 SAE paper, postwar mass production is described as being aimed primarily at high-speed vehicle diesels, alongside progress in size, weight, cost, quality, reliability and performance. SAE, “Turbocharging Today and Tomorrow” (1966); NHTSA history.

Garrett identifies the 1962 Oldsmobile Jetfire Turbo Rocket as the first turbocharged production car. That milestone marks an early passenger-car application, not the point at which turbochargers became common across the car market. The “first” characterization is Garrett’s; the sources cited here do not independently resolve every possible definition of a production-car first. Garrett’s company history.

Mid-1970s onward: passenger cars gain momentum

NHTSA says the passenger-car industry did not seriously consider turbochargers until the mid-1970s. Smaller-displacement engines and fuel-economy regulation helped create interest in using turbocharging to recover power and performance from reduced-displacement engines. That is a period-specific rationale, not a guarantee that every turbocharged engine uses less fuel in every vehicle or driving condition. NHTSA history.

How turbine design addressed operating range

Multi-entry and twin-entry turbines

Exhaust pulses do not arrive as a perfectly steady flow. Multi-entry turbine arrangements were developed to make use of those pulses and improve low-speed and transient operation, according to the 2014 SAE paper. This illustrates a recurring design challenge: a turbocharger must be matched to the engine and its operating range, rather than optimized for a single headline power figure. The cited paper discusses the engineering approach but does not establish a universal numerical gain for every application. SAE paper on twin-entry turbochargers.

Variable turbine geometry

Variable-geometry turbochargers alter the effective turbine flow area as operating conditions change. Garrett describes the approach as supporting driveability and engine downsizing. Its company history records a variable-geometry turbo on a diesel passenger car in 1995, a two-stage system on a diesel passenger car in 2006, and a high-volume gasoline VNT application in 2017. These are manufacturer-reported milestones, not an independent ranking of designs. Garrett’s company history; Garrett’s VNT overview.

Porsche’s 2005 announcement called its gasoline engine with variable turbine geometry a world-first. This is Porsche’s own claim, made in that announcement’s context; it should not be treated as a timeless, independently established ranking. Porsche’s 2005 announcement.

What the history does—and does not—show

The broad arc is clear: an early exhaust-driven concept developed through aviation, marine and heavy-duty diesel applications; postwar commercial diesel production helped establish turbocharging as a manufactured technology; and passenger-car use expanded later, alongside engineering changes intended to improve operation across engine speeds.

This overview is not a complete global chronology, and the cited material does not provide a comparable performance dataset for different turbo designs. It also does not establish a current whole-market adoption rate or support a general claim about the benefits of electrified turbochargers. Those questions require evidence beyond the historical milestones described here.
