Yamaha leans into GP-inspired fairing and a high-revving triple; Triumph pairs classic roadster styling with a larger parallel twin and more peak torque.
Why these two retro bikes are being compared
The model identification is an interpretation: Yamaha’s XSR900 GP is a retro sport bike styled around the company’s 1980s and 1990s Grand Prix history, while Triumph describes the Speed Twin 1200 as a modern classic with sporting capability. Their shared retro appeal makes a comparison reasonable, but their designs point to different kinds of motorcycle.
Neither manufacturer’s product information establishes that Triumph has directly targeted the XSR900 GP, taken its buyers, or caused a measurable change in sales. “Under attack” is best read as an editorial hook for a comparison, not a documented market event.

These are figures published by Yamaha Motor Europe for the XSR900 GP and by Triumph for the US-market Speed Twin 1200; they are manufacturer specifications, not results from a same-day independent test. The Yamaha lists more peak power, while Triumph lists more peak torque, with its peak arriving at a lower engine speed. Those numbers describe different points on each engine’s output curve; by themselves, they do not establish which bike accelerates faster or feels stronger in ordinary riding.

Two different retro identities and riding setups
Yamaha: GP-inspired sport styling
The XSR900 GP’s fairing and racing references are central to its identity. Yamaha also lists clip-on handlebars, fully adjustable KYB suspension, riding modes and a six-axis IMU, framing the bike around a sport-oriented package as well as a retro appearance. Clip-ons are a concrete difference in handlebar layout, but the cited product specifications do not quantify comfort or riding position.
Triumph: a classic roadster with modern controls
The Speed Twin 1200 has a cleaner modern-classic roadster silhouette. Triumph lists a 43 mm Marzocchi upside-down fork, twin rear shocks, and lean-sensitive optimized cornering ABS and traction control. The base model has Road and Rain riding modes. This equipment list differs from Yamaha’s, but it is not a substitute for a direct ride test.

Keep the Speed Twin RS separate
The Speed Twin 1200 RS is a separate, more focused trim. Triumph’s update lists Sport mode for the RS; do not assume RS equipment or settings apply to the base Speed Twin 1200. Check the local model-year specification when comparing dealer stock.
Prices and availability depend on market

These prices do not show which bike is cheaper: they come from different countries, currencies and pricing conventions. “Ride-away” and “starting price” are not equivalent measures. For a useful buying comparison, get current quotes for the same market and confirm taxes, fees, warranty, model year, trim and delivery timing.

What the specifications do not settle
The listed figures and equipment can help narrow a choice, but they do not establish real-world comfort, handling, acceleration, braking performance or value. There is no independent back-to-back test in the cited product and announcement material. A test ride and local dealer quote are the practical next steps if both bikes are available to you.
