Truckers can limit the damage from high diesel prices by checking the real economics of each load, verifying how fuel surcharges are calculated and passed through, comparing fuel options on their actual routes, and reducing avoidable fuel use without compromising safety or rest. None of these moves guarantees a profit: prices, freight availability, contracts and operating costs remain outside a driver’s control.
What the September 2026 diesel-price snapshot tells you—and what it doesn’t
The U.S. average diesel price was nearly $6.06 per gallon on September 11, 2026, according to AAA figures reported by the Associated Press. The report compared that with $5.85 the prior week and about $3.71 a year earlier. Those are dated national averages, not a current quote for a particular pump, route or state.
For a current benchmark, check the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s weekly on-highway diesel series, which is updated on Tuesday. Your actual fuel cost depends on where and when you buy, and on the terms available to you.
Start with the load’s fuel economics, not its headline rate
A load that pays well in gross dollars can still leave a thin margin if it requires long empty miles, burns more fuel, or ends in a lane with poor backhaul options. DAT recommends assessing the lane and trip details alongside the offered rate—not treating gross revenue as the whole calculation.

Build a trip-level estimate
- Estimate loaded and deadhead miles, and include the likely return or backhaul rather than assuming every mile earns the same rate.
- Use the truck’s realistic fuel economy for the route, load and operating conditions. A heavier shipment or a route with more stop-and-go driving can change fuel use.
- Calculate expected fuel spend from gallons required and the price you can reasonably access on that route.
- Compare the result with the rate and any fuel-surcharge payment you are actually entitled to receive under your contract.
DAT’s guidance also points to freight weight and lane conditions as relevant considerations. These choices are available only when the contract, equipment, freight supply and schedule leave room to choose. A driver who must take a particular load or run a set route cannot reprice it simply by wishing the economics were better. See DAT’s carrier strategies for high fuel costs.
Check what your fuel surcharge really pays
There is no single federal fuel-surcharge formula. The EIA publishes price data, but it says carriers and shippers negotiate surcharge arrangements privately; companies may use different methods, and the agency neither calculates nor regulates those charges. Some formulas use EIA weekly retail prices as a benchmark. The benchmark is not a guarantee that the pump price and a payment will move together.
For an owner-operator hauling under contract, read the agreement for the surcharge’s price basis, adjustment schedule, assumed fuel economy and the amount passed through to you. A rapid increase at the pump can arrive before a weekly or otherwise scheduled adjustment. The payment may also be partial: J.B. Hunt’s own guidance notes that full pass-through is not assured, illustrating why the individual agreement matters rather than establishing a rule for every carrier. Do not count a shipper’s surcharge as profit by default. Work out what reaches your business, when it reaches you, and how that compares with the fuel cost the trip actually creates.

A discount is useful only if it survives the details: the station is on your route, the eligible price is better than your alternative, and fees or payment terms do not consume the difference. A fuel-card network can help one operator and be a poor fit for another whose regular lanes have sparse coverage.
- Check participating stations on your real lanes and whether a detour would erase the benefit.
- Compare the discounted price with the cash or credit price you could otherwise pay at the same location.
- Subtract transaction, annual or other fees, and check payment timing and terms.
- Consider whether card-directed stops change your route, rest plan or operating schedule.
DAT advertises route-searchable discounted fuel through its card and says its card has no in-network transaction or annual fee. That is the vendor’s description of its own offer, not an independent market comparison; confirm current eligibility, network and terms before relying on it. See DAT’s fuel-card page. Reduce avoidable idling without sacrificing rest or climate control
Long-duration idling consumes fuel, but the right response depends on why the truck is idling and what the driver needs in the cab. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates truck idling nationally consumes 1 billion gallons of fuel annually and produces 11 million tons of carbon dioxide, 180,000 tons of nitrogen oxides and 5,000 tons of particulate matter per year. These are aggregate estimates, not a prediction of what an individual truck will save. The EPA describes ways to reduce idling on its idle-reduction technologies and strategies page.
Identify the actual need before choosing equipment
Track when and how long the engine idles, and note whether the need is heat, cooling or electricity. EPA describes training, incentives and technologies that can provide cab heat, cooling or power without running the main engine. Options discussed in industry guidance include diesel heaters, auxiliary power units, battery systems and inverters; each addresses different needs and has different capacity and operating constraints.

A small electrical load may not call for the same system as overnight heating or cooling. Overdrive’s idle-reduction trade guidance discusses these options, but its specific prices and savings examples should not be treated as current quotes.

Do not cut idling in a way that jeopardizes safe rest, necessary cab temperature or the driver’s ability to operate. A practical target is avoidable idling, not eliminating power when the driver needs it.

J.B. Hunt recommends maintaining tire condition and alignment, checking air and fuel filters, limiting idling and keeping the engine operating efficiently. These are sensible maintenance checks, but the company’s advice does not quantify a guaranteed saving for every truck. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance requirements and consider the truck’s condition before attributing a fuel change to any one adjustment.
Driving speed and style can affect fuel use, but the result depends on the vehicle, load, road and schedule. Overdrive discusses fuel-economy trade-offs in its industry guidance; avoid applying a universal miles-per-gallon claim to trucks that operate under different conditions. Any fuel-saving change must also fit legal, contractual and safe operating requirements.

Manage the cash gap between buying fuel and getting paid
Fuel is often paid for before freight revenue arrives. Reducing the time between loads and payment can ease that working-capital pressure, though it does not make an unprofitable load profitable. DAT’s article points to factoring as one possible way to receive funds sooner and mentions Outgo’s service. Treat that as a provider option to investigate, not an endorsement or a promise of eligibility or payout timing.
Before agreeing to factoring, compare the fee, recourse terms, eligibility rules, payout timing and contract duration. Check whether the faster cash flow is worth the cost for your business and whether the terms fit your customer-payment cycle. DAT’s discussion is at its carrier fuel-cost strategies article.
Which moves are available to which drivers?
Most of the choices above concern an owner-operator or carrier responsible for the truck’s fuel bill, load selection, contract and equipment. A company driver may be able to avoid unnecessary idling or follow efficient driving practices, but typically cannot renegotiate the shipper’s rate, choose the fuel-surcharge formula, select a card or purchase an auxiliary power system. Confirm who controls the decision and who receives any savings before treating a tactic as yours to use.
