A trolleybus is an electric bus on rubber tyres. Two spring-loaded roof poles press collector heads against two parallel overhead wires: one carries traction current to the bus and the other carries it back to the power system. The poles let the driver steer around small obstructions, but they have a finite sideways range. If either collector loses its wire, the event is a dewirement. The bus may stop for the poles to be restored, or—only if fitted with suitable auxiliary equipment—continue for a limited distance on battery or engine power.
The basic electrical path
A trolleybus receives electricity in much the same way a tram does, but the vehicle is guided by a road surface rather than rails. That difference determines the overhead layout. A trolleybus needs two separate conductors above the street because its rubber tyres do not provide a metal return circuit.

One wire supplies power and the other returns it
Direct current travels from a traction substation along one contact wire, through a collector pole and the bus’s electrical equipment, then leaves through the second pole and returns on the other contact wire. The circuit is complete through the two overhead conductors, not through the road, tyres or the bus body. Trolleybus engineering references describe commonly encountered systems in the 600–750 V DC range, but that is a range found in the systems discussed by the source, not a universal or current standard for every network. (Trolleybus UK overhead-equipment overview)
Inside the bus, traction equipment converts and controls the incoming DC for the motors. Auxiliary loads such as lighting, steering assistance, compressors and heating use the vehicle’s electrical systems as designed by the manufacturer. During braking, some trolleybus systems can use regenerative braking, sending electrical energy back through the overhead circuit when the infrastructure and vehicle controls support it; this is an engineering option, not a guarantee that every network accepts regenerated energy. Why a trolleybus cannot use one wire
A single overhead wire would provide no dedicated return path. Trams can often use their running rails for return current, with electrical bonding and isolation measures controlling stray current. A trolleybus has no such rails, so its two poles contact two insulated conductors. This is the key visual difference between a trolleybus route and a single-contact tram arrangement.
How the roof poles maintain contact
Two long poles are mounted at the rear or roof of the bus, one aligned with each wire. Each pole is sprung and can swivel as the bus follows the road. At its upper end is a collector head, commonly incorporating a carbon contact surface. The carbon slides along the underside of the wire while the pole’s spring force keeps pressure on the conductor. (Trolleybus UK explanation of trolleybuses)
Steering freedom, but only within a working envelope
Because the poles pivot, the driver does not have to keep the bus exactly under the centerline of the wires. The bus can move some distance to either side to pass a parked vehicle, avoid a road defect or follow a curve. The allowable movement depends on pole geometry, wire height, contact-head design, speed, and the particular overhead installation. It is limited: steering too far sideways, cresting a sharp change in road alignment, or encountering a damaged or poorly aligned wire can pull a collector away.
The two poles must also stay associated with their respective conductors. A pole crossing onto the wrong wire, lifting off at a switch, or being thrown by a sudden movement can interrupt the circuit and may damage the collector or overhead equipment. Operators therefore design wire curves, span wires and junction hardware around the poles’ mechanical limits rather than treating the wires as an infinitely flexible guide.
What is above the street?
A trolleybus overhead system is more than two bare lines. It normally includes supports attached to buildings or street poles, insulating components, span wires that hold the contact wires in position, sectioning and feeding equipment, and metallic hardware at crossings and branches. The contact wires must remain electrically separated while being held at a stable height and alignment over a moving lane. (Trolleybus UK overhead-equipment overview)

Crossings, frogs and overhead switches
At a junction, the wires need to guide each pole through a branch, merge or crossing. Overhead switches—also called points or frogs in trolleybus practice—route the collector paths. Designs and operating methods have varied. Specialist descriptions include equipment operated electrically and arrangements in which the driver controls power or coasts at a selected point, but no single mechanism should be assumed for every city or generation of equipment. (Trolleybus UK overhead-equipment overview)
Modern projects may specify different collector heads, wire and crossing designs, automatic wire-engagement arrangements, or automatic pole-lowering and raising. Reports on clean-bus deployment describe these as selectable system features rather than a universal package. (UITP ASSURED Clean Bus report; trolleybus take-up guide)

What “leaving the wires” means
The technical term is dewirement: a current collector has become detached from its contact wire. It can happen when the bus moves beyond the poles’ lateral reach, when a pole is lifted or pushed off at a junction, or when an obstruction, wire fault or unusual road movement breaks contact. A dewirement is not the same as the bus intentionally entering a planned battery section; it is an unintended loss of the overhead connection.
What the bus does immediately
- Traction power is interrupted. If one pole loses contact, the electrical circuit opens or the vehicle’s protection system detects an abnormal condition. The driver normally removes traction demand and brings the bus under control.
- The detached pole may retract. Spring mechanisms and retaining arrangements are intended to stop a loose pole from striking nearby equipment or sweeping across the road. The exact behavior depends on the vehicle.
- The bus stops or rolls to a safe position. Whether it can move under its own power now depends on the vehicle’s auxiliary system and the operator’s procedures. A trolleybus without usable auxiliary propulsion generally cannot continue normal service.
- The poles and overhead are inspected. The driver or authorized maintenance staff determine whether the pole can be safely returned to the wire, whether the contact head or wire is damaged, and whether the vehicle must be recovered.
UN Regulation No. 107’s consolidated text dated 23 February 2018 states: “Each trolley pole shall be equipped with a device that automatically retracts the pole in the event of the current collector becoming accidentally detached from the contact wire (de-wired).” That wording is a safety requirement in the cited regulatory text; confirm the applicable current version and jurisdiction before treating it as a present compliance rule for a specific vehicle. (UN Regulation No. 107, consolidated 2018 text)

- Stop applying traction power and secure the bus according to the operator’s rulebook.
- Check for traffic hazards, damaged wires, fallen equipment and possible electrical exposure. Passengers and bystanders are kept clear of suspect equipment.
- Use the vehicle’s approved pole-control equipment or a designated manual tool to reposition the collector heads. The procedure differs between manual and automatic systems.
- Re-establish both contacts only when the wires and poles are correctly aligned and the operator has confirmed that it is safe to energize the vehicle.
- Test propulsion and auxiliaries at low speed. If a pole, head, insulator or wire is damaged, the bus remains out of service and maintenance staff isolate the affected section.
A driver should not improvise by touching a wire, climbing onto the roof or attempting to push a pole into place while the system may be energized. Trolleybus contact wires carry traction voltage, and the safe clearance and isolation procedure belongs to trained personnel.
Can it keep moving without the wires?
Sometimes, but there is no universal off-wire distance. A trolleybus can travel away from its wires only when it has an auxiliary power system capable of supplying propulsion and the operator permits that maneuver.
Limited auxiliary power units
The Transportation Research Board uses auxiliary power unit for a carried source intended to provide limited speed and range for emergency movements, infrequent diversions or depot and servicing work. Depending on the design, the source can be a battery or a small engine-generator. It is not necessarily sized for a complete route or long-term operation. (Transportation Research Board, TCRP Report 7)
Battery-equipped trolleybuses
Some vehicles are built with a larger traction battery and controls for regular off-wire running. They may leave the wires at a terminus, cross a short unwired section, detour around roadworks or operate on routes where overhead coverage is deliberately incomplete. Their practical range depends on battery capacity, passenger load, speed, temperature, terrain, heating or air-conditioning demand, charging strategy and the operator’s reserve policy. The existence of a battery therefore does not establish a fixed number of off-wire kilometres.
Engine-generator assistance
Older or specialized vehicles may carry a small combustion engine and generator instead of, or in addition to, a traction battery. Such a unit can provide emergency movement or depot capability, but its power, noise, emissions and operating rules differ from a battery system. A vehicle designed for longer battery operation should not be described as equivalent to one carrying only a low-power emergency APU.

Intentional wire disengagement versus a dewirement
When an equipped bus deliberately lowers its poles at a signed boundary and switches to battery power, that is a planned off-wire transition. Automatic wire-engagement systems can help a vehicle reconnect at a prepared point, but the available evidence describes these as design options, not equipment fitted to every trolleybus. (UITP ASSURED Clean Bus report; trolleybus take-up guide)
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How different trolleybus systems can behave
There is no single “trolleybus technology” specification. The features below are the main axes on which networks and vehicle generations differ.
| Feature | Possible arrangements | What it changes for the driver or maintainer |
|---|---|---|
| Pole handling | Manual lowering and raising; powered or automatic controls; automatic retraction after a dewirement | How quickly contact can be restored and how much roadside intervention is required |
| Collector and wire hardware | Different collector-head materials, wire profiles, crossings and guide geometry | Compatibility, allowable speed through junctions and sensitivity to misalignment |
| Branch switching | Electrically actuated or other locally specified overhead switches; driver power/coasting procedures on some traditional equipment | How a vehicle is routed at a fork or merge |
| Auxiliary propulsion | Small engine-generator, limited battery APU, or larger traction battery | Whether off-wire travel is emergency-only, a depot maneuver or part of scheduled service |
These variations explain why an instruction that is safe for one fleet—such as a particular pole-reset method or an assumed battery range—may be wrong for another. Fleet manuals and local control-room instructions take precedence over generic descriptions.
Common misconceptions
“The tyres complete the circuit.”
No. The two overhead conductors provide both the outgoing and return paths. The rubber tyres are part of the vehicle’s mechanical support and road contact, not the traction-current return.
“A trolleybus is locked to a rail-like track.”
No. The driver steers on ordinary pavement. The poles provide electrical contact while allowing limited lateral movement, but they do not give unlimited freedom and they do not mechanically guide the bus like rails.

“Every trolleybus can run a fixed distance after a dewirement.”
No. Some can move only far enough to clear a junction or reach a safe stopping place; others have batteries intended for longer planned sections. Vehicle equipment, operating conditions and the operator’s rules determine the actual capability.
“A fallen pole always means the vehicle is permanently disabled.”
Not necessarily. A retracted pole may be reset and the bus returned to the wire if inspections find no damage. A bent collector, damaged wire or electrical fault can instead require isolation, towing or maintenance.
A practical example
Imagine a bus approaching a branch where the overhead wires curve left. The driver follows the lane and uses the local switching procedure. Both collector heads remain pressed against their conductors, so current continues through the bus. If the bus turns farther right than the pole geometry allows, one head can slide off. The protection system removes traction demand, the affected pole retracts if equipped, and the driver stops. A battery-equipped bus may lower both poles and move clear under its auxiliary system; a bus with only a limited APU may move just far enough for safety; a bus with no usable auxiliary propulsion waits for trained staff to restore contact or arrange recovery. The outcome is determined by the vehicle and network design, not by a universal trolleybus rule.

The wires allow a trolleybus to draw energy continuously while it is on the route, avoiding the need to carry all of its daily traction energy in a large battery. That advantage comes with fixed infrastructure, electrical sectioning, junction hardware and maintenance of both wires and support structures. A fleet that adds battery operation can reduce the need for continuous coverage or bridge gaps, but it adds battery mass, charging and thermal-management requirements. The correct design choice depends on route layout and operating duty rather than on whether a bus can make a short emergency move after a dewirement.
