In the United States, ESPN carried the full race and there was no verified free-to-air U.S. broadcaster. Free live full-race coverage was available in selected European territories, including Germany on RTL, Austria on ServusTV, Luxembourg on RTL ZWEE and RTL Play, Belgium on RTBF Auvio, and Switzerland on SRF zwei.
The race took place on Sunday, March 23, 2025, so it cannot be watched live now. As of August 9, 2026, the best official options are the full replay in the F1 archive—availability may depend on country and plan—or the free official race highlights.
Important: The free European services below were licensed for viewers in their respective territories. A free-to-air television broadcast, a free stream requiring an account, a free trial, and free highlights are different things. None should be treated as a guaranteed worldwide stream.
The 2025 Chinese Grand Prix free-channel answer by country
The table below describes what was available when the race was live. It does not mean that the original broadcaster pages still carry the complete race replay.

Free full-race options that existed in Europe
Germany: RTL showed the race on free-to-air television
RTL’s official 2025 announcement named the Chinese Grand Prix as one of seven races it would show live on free-to-air television. RTL also listed the Chinese qualifying session among its free broadcasts.
That means the accurate description is free live RTL television in Germany. The announcement does not establish that RTL+ offered the same free live race stream, so do not assume that an RTL+ subscription or website replay was equivalent to the RTL television broadcast.
Austria: ServusTV carried the Chinese Grand Prix free on television
ServusTV’s January 2025 announcement confirmed that the Chinese Grand Prix was part of its Austrian Formula 1 rights package. It showed the race live on Austrian free-to-air television and covered the Sprint weekend as well.
ServusTV On may be the natural online destination for Austrian viewers, but its streaming FAQ says sports streams are territorially restricted and that ServusTV does not support VPN services. Therefore, the safe claim is that the race was free on Austrian television—not that ServusTV’s online stream worked everywhere.
Luxembourg: RTL ZWEE and RTL Play offered the entire season
RTL Luxembourg said the complete 2025 Formula 1 season—including Sprint sessions, qualifying and races—was available free on RTL ZWEE and RTL Play. The television route did not require an online login.
Online viewers needed to create or use an RTL account. RTL’s login notice also said that its Smart TV apps did not support F1 streaming because of security restrictions. If the race had been live, the practical online setup would have been to register ahead of time and use a supported web or mobile route, subject to Luxembourg rights restrictions.
Rank #2
Belgium: RTBF Auvio was the free online option
Formula 1’s broadcaster listing identifies RTBF for Belgium, and contemporary 2025 coverage identified RTBF Auvio as the free Belgian streaming option for the Chinese Grand Prix.

The service is not automatically a worldwide stream: access and event rights are intended for the relevant Belgian territory. The feed was in French.
Switzerland: SRF zwei showed the race live
SRF’s own Chinese Grand Prix coverage listed the race live on SRF zwei from 07:40. That was the broadcaster’s surrounding coverage time; the official Formula 1 timetable placed the race start at 07:00 UTC, or 08:00 in Switzerland.
SRF also listed selected sessions, including the Sprint, through its sports stream and app. However, SRF states that its television livestreams are available only within Switzerland for rights reasons, and some on-demand material is geoblocked as well. A Swiss television broadcast should not be confused with a stream guaranteed to work abroad.
United States: ESPN carried the full race
For U.S. viewers, the full 2025 Chinese Grand Prix was on ESPN. ESPN’s event listing placed the other sessions on ESPN2 and ESPNU:
| Session | U.S. Eastern time | U.S. channel |
|---|---|---|
| Practice 1 | Thursday, March 20 at 11:30 p.m. EDT | ESPN2 |
| Sprint Qualifying | Friday, March 21 at 3:30 a.m. EDT | ESPN2 |
| Sprint | Friday, March 21 at 11:00 p.m. EDT | ESPNU |
| Qualifying | Saturday, March 22 at 3:00 a.m. EDT | ESPN2 |
| Race | Sunday, March 23 at 3:00 a.m. EDT | ESPN |
ESPN’s television-programming listing showed the race at approximately 2:55 a.m. ET, while Formula 1’s official timetable gave the actual race start as 07:00 UTC, equivalent to 3:00 a.m. EDT. A few minutes of pre-race programming explains the difference.
ESPN access required a participating TV provider or a live-TV streaming package. Fubo and Sling trial offers may have been usable by eligible new customers during the event, but they required registration and generally a payment method. They were temporary trials—not free-to-air channels—and could renew or incur charges if not cancelled under the applicable terms.
F1 TV was a paid alternative for the live U.S. event, while the official Formula 1 highlights were free but did not provide the complete live race. The 2025 U.S. arrangement should not be used as a statement about Formula 1 rights in 2026.
United Kingdom: free highlights, not a free live race
Sky Sports held the live U.K. and Ireland rights for every 2025 race weekend. Its Chinese Grand Prix guide listed the live race at 7:00 a.m. UK time on Sunday, March 23.

Contemporary coverage listed extended highlights at approximately 1:00 p.m. GMT, rather than the live Grand Prix. A valid UK TV licence was required for the Channel 4 viewing route.
So the accurate U.K. summary is: Sky Sports for live coverage; Channel 4 for free delayed highlights. Calling Channel 4 a free live-race channel would be incorrect.
When did the Chinese Grand Prix start?
The 2025 event was held at the Shanghai International Circuit. Formula 1’s official event page listed the race for Sunday, March 23 at 07:00 UTC.

What does free actually mean?
Most confusion around a free F1 channel comes from combining several different types of access:
- Free-to-air television: A normal broadcast channel with no pay-TV subscription, such as RTL in Germany or ServusTV in Austria. This may not include an internet stream.
- Free online stream: No subscription fee, but an account, registration, local eligibility or geolocation restriction may apply. RTL Play and RTBF Auvio fit this description.
- Free trial: A temporary promotion from a paid streaming provider. It may require a payment card, have eligibility rules and automatically renew unless cancelled.
- Free highlights: A shorter delayed video, not the complete live race. Channel 4’s U.K. offering fell into this category, as does Formula 1’s official highlights video.
- Foreign stream accessed through a VPN: Not a guaranteed or universally lawful solution. The VPN may cost money, the broadcaster may block it, and using it to bypass territorial rights may conflict with the broadcaster’s terms. ServusTV specifically says its sports streams are territory-restricted and that it does not support VPN services.
The clearest practical rule is to use the broadcaster licensed for your location. A foreign website is not automatically a free, legal or reliable channel just because its homepage loads.
Common access problems and what they mean
- The page says the video is unavailable in your country. The service is enforcing territorial rights. Check the broadcaster licensed for your country instead of assuming a VPN will solve the problem.
- The stream asks you to log in. That was expected for RTL Play in Luxembourg and RTBF Auvio in Belgium. Register before the event rather than waiting for the start.
- The Smart TV app does not show Formula 1. RTL Luxembourg said its Smart TV apps did not support F1 streaming in 2025 because of security restrictions. A supported web or mobile route may have been necessary, subject to the service’s current device rules.
- The commentary is not in English. RTL Germany, ServusTV and SRF used German-language coverage; RTL Luxembourg used Luxembourgish; RTBF Auvio used French. ESPN and Sky Sports supplied English-language coverage, with U.S. Spanish availability depending on the provider and feed.
- An old live link no longer works. Live-event pages and free replay windows can expire after a season. For a historical race, start with Formula 1’s own archive rather than an old broadcaster URL.
How to watch the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix now
Because the race is over, there is no current live channel to tune into. The official choices are:
- Full replay: The F1 TV archive currently lists the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix replay at approximately two hours and three minutes. Whether playback is included depends on your country and F1 TV plan. Check the current F1 TV subscription page before assuming it is free.
- Free highlights: Formula 1’s official Race Highlights: 2025 Chinese Grand Prix video runs for about 7 minutes and 52 seconds. It is free, but it is not a full-race replay.
There is no reason to rely on unauthorized replay sites. Their links can disappear, their video may be incomplete or edited, and they may expose viewers to aggressive advertising or malware.
Race context and result
The 2025 Chinese Grand Prix was the Sprint weekend at the Shanghai International Circuit, a 5.451-kilometre track. The race lasted 56 laps. Oscar Piastri won, Lando Norris finished second and George Russell finished third, according to the official results listing from ESPN.

Frequently Asked Questions
Could I watch the full 2025 Chinese Grand Prix free in the United States?
Not through a verified U.S. free-to-air channel. ESPN carried the full race, so viewers needed a participating TV provider or paid live-TV streaming service. Fubo or Sling trials were temporary promotions requiring registration, not genuinely free channels. The free Formula 1 highlights video is shorter than the race.
Best Value
Was the Chinese Grand Prix live on Channel 4 in the United Kingdom?
No. Sky Sports carried the live U.K. race. Channel 4 offered free extended highlights later in the day, not the live full Grand Prix. Contemporary coverage also noted that a valid UK TV licence was required for the Channel 4 viewing route.
Did RTL show the 2025 Chinese Grand Prix for free?
Yes, RTL’s official 2025 announcement listed the Chinese Grand Prix as a free-to-air live race in Germany. It also listed qualifying. That announcement does not by itself confirm that RTL+ carried the same free live stream.
Can I watch ServusTV’s F1 stream outside Austria?
There is no guarantee. ServusTV says its sports streams are territorially restricted and that it does not support VPN services. The confirmed free option was ServusTV’s Austrian free-to-air television broadcast.
Did RTBF Auvio require an account?
Yes. RTBF describes Auvio as free but requires users to create an account. The F1 stream was intended for viewers covered by RTBF’s Belgian rights, so availability outside Belgium was not guaranteed.

What time did the race start in New York and California?
The official start was 3:00 a.m. EDT on Sunday, March 23, 2025, in New York. It was 12:00 a.m. PDT on Sunday in California. Central time was 2:00 a.m., and Mountain time was 1:00 a.m.; all were on Sunday, not Saturday.
Can I still watch the complete 2025 Chinese Grand Prix?
Formula 1’s archive currently lists a full replay of approximately two hours and three minutes, but access can vary by country and F1 TV plan. Formula 1 also offers a free official highlights video of about 7 minutes and 52 seconds.
The Bottom Line
The full 2025 Chinese Grand Prix was free live only in selected territories: RTL in Germany, ServusTV in Austria, RTL ZWEE or RTL Play in Luxembourg, RTBF Auvio in Belgium, and SRF zwei in Switzerland. U.S. viewers needed ESPN access, while U.K. viewers could watch free Channel 4 highlights but not the live race. Since the event ended on March 23, 2025, use the official F1 replay archive for the complete race or Formula 1’s free highlights for a short recap.
