ORF 1 was the free live channel for the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix in Austria, and ORF ON streamed the coverage online. The race took place on June 29, 2025, so live coverage has ended; viewers now need official highlights or a market-eligible replay service.
The 2025 Austrian Grand Prix was shown live and free on ORF 1 in Austria, with the same coverage available online through ORF ON. The stream was geographically restricted to Austria, so it was not a worldwide free option. In the United States, ESPN carried the live race; in the United Kingdom, Channel 4 offered highlights rather than live coverage.
Important date note: the race took place on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the Red Bull Ring in Spielberg. It is no longer live. Viewers watching now should use the official Formula 1 highlights or check whether a complete replay remains available through F1 TV in their market.
The free live channel in Austria: ORF 1
ORF 1 was the correct free-to-watch live broadcaster for the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix. ORF also streamed its television coverage through ORF ON.

“Free” here means that ORF’s coverage did not require a separate F1 TV or sports-streaming subscription. It does not mean that the online stream was available worldwide. ORF’s 2025 rights allocation gave ORF 1 twelve live Grands Prix, including Austria, while ServusTV held the live rights to the other twelve races. ORF’s season schedule specifically assigned the Austrian round to ORF.
For the Austrian weekend, ORF said it would show every Formula 1 session along with Formula 3, Formula 2, Porsche Supercup, the driver parade and additional event programming. That meant ORF was the destination for practice, qualifying, pre-race coverage and the Grand Prix itself—not merely a highlights channel.
Was ORF ON available outside Austria?
Ordinarily, no. ORF states that geo-protected video requires an Austrian IP address, and its live-stream interface warns that some programming is available only in Austria and without a VPN. Check ORF’s geographic-restriction guidance before relying on the service.
| Where you were watching | Official route | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Austria, television | ORF 1 | Live race and full Austrian GP weekend coverage |
| Austria, online | ORF ON | Online ORF coverage, subject to Austrian geolocation |
| Outside Austria | Local rights-holder | Availability depended on the country’s 2025 broadcast agreement |
A VPN is a separate access method, not a free channel. It may be blocked, may conflict with broadcaster terms, and may be treated differently under local rules. ORF’s geographic restriction should therefore be treated as the starting point rather than assumed to be bypassable or universally authorized.

How to watch ORF ON from Austria
- Open ORF ON or the ORF Austrian Grand Prix event page.
- Choose the ORF 1 live stream or the event collection.
- For a live event, open the stream before the 3:00 p.m. CEST start.
- For the full weekend, use ORF’s schedule rather than searching only for “race”; the broadcaster carried practice, qualifying, support races and pre-race coverage.
- After the broadcast, check the event page for on-demand video. ORF announced live and on-demand availability, but the retention period depends on the individual listing and rights window.
An ORF account may be used for features such as favorites, saved regional settings and age verification. Whether an account is required can vary by stream and should be checked on the specific ORF ON page. ORF’s support information explains the platform’s account and on-demand features.
If ORF ON does not play
- Confirm that your connection is using an Austrian IP address.
- If you are physically in Austria, disable an active VPN or proxy. ORF warns that geo-protected streams may require an Austrian IP and no VPN.
- Try a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Edge. ORF lists Internet Explorer and Opera as unsupported browsers.
- Try the ORF ON app or watch ORF 1 on television.
- If the live broadcast has ended, look in the event’s on-demand collection rather than only on the live-channel page.
- Use the official ORF page, not a third-party embedded player claiming to restream the broadcast.
How viewers outside Austria could watch
United States: ESPN
For the 2025 event, ESPN was the U.S. live broadcaster. ESPN’s published schedule listed the Grand Prix on ESPN with an 8:55 a.m. EDT television window and the actual race start at 9:00 a.m. EDT. This was a paid-TV or paid-streaming-package route, not a free over-the-air channel. View ESPN’s 2025 Austrian GP schedule.

Do not apply later U.S. rights arrangements retroactively to this race. Formula 1’s current broadcaster information now identifies Apple TV for the United States, but that reflects a post-2025 arrangement and does not change ESPN’s role for the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix. Check Formula 1’s current broadcaster list.
United Kingdom: Channel 4 highlights
Channel 4 offered free qualifying and race highlights, not live coverage of the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix. Contemporary listings placed the race highlights on Sunday evening, including a listing at 5:30 p.m. BST. See the event-era U.K. schedule.
Therefore, a U.K. viewer looking for a free legal option could watch the highlights after the race, but Channel 4 was not the place to watch the Austrian Grand Prix live.
ServusTV: same-country re-live coverage
ServusTV was not the live F1 broadcaster for Austria’s 2025 round. Its official event page described the Formula 1 race as a re-live:
- 5:00 p.m. on ServusTV On
- 10:55 p.m. on ServusTV television
Formula 3, Formula 2 and Porsche Supercup were available live on ServusTV On, but the F1 race itself was delayed. ServusTV On streams and highlights were restricted to Austria. This made ServusTV a useful same-country backup for someone who missed ORF’s live broadcast, but not a live alternative. View ServusTV’s Austrian GP schedule.

What can you watch now?
Because the 2025 Austrian Grand Prix has finished, there is no current live stream to join. The most clearly identifiable official free video is Formula 1’s 8-minute, 2-second race-highlights video, published on June 29, 2025. It is a highlights package, not a complete race replay.
A complete replay may still be available through F1 TV in markets where the relevant archive and replay rights remain active. F1 TV’s event guide describes live session coverage, onboard cameras and pre- and post-race shows, but F1 TV Pro and Premium are offered only in selected locations. Availability and pricing should be checked after signing in from the viewer’s country. Check F1 TV’s event information.
ORF may retain individual programs on demand, but its availability depends on the specific video and rights period. Do not assume that the old ORF live page still provides the full race or that the replay will remain indefinitely.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Confusing ORF with ServusTV: ORF had the live Austrian GP broadcast; ServusTV’s F1 race coverage was a re-live.
- Using 2:25 p.m. as the lights-out time: that was ORF’s television-program listing. The official race start was 3:00 p.m. CEST.
- Using the wrong Pacific conversion: 3:00 p.m. CEST was 6:00 a.m. PDT, not 7:00 a.m.
- Assuming “free in Austria” means free worldwide: ORF ON and ServusTV On applied territorial restrictions.
- Calling Channel 4 live: Channel 4’s Austrian GP offering was highlights coverage.
- Using current U.S. rights for a historical race: ESPN was the 2025 U.S. route; later Apple TV arrangements are separate.
- Promising an indefinite replay: ORF and F1 TV availability depends on current rights and platform retention.
- Relying on unofficial streams: piracy sites, social-media restreams and suspicious “free F1” pages are not official viewing options and can be unreliable or unsafe.
Bottom line
For the live event on June 29, 2025, the answer was ORF 1—and ORF ON online—for viewers in Austria. The race began at 3:00 p.m. CEST. Viewers in the U.S. needed ESPN for live coverage, while U.K. viewers received free highlights through Channel 4. Now that the race is over, use Formula 1’s official highlights for a free recap or check F1 TV for a complete replay if it remains available in your country.
