Netflix is not currently a confirmed native Apple CarPlay app. Apple now supports parked video playback in some vehicles, but only with compatible cars and apps. Netflix’s current help documentation says AirPlay and screen mirroring from iPhone or iPad are unsupported, so the usual “play Netflix and send it to CarPlay” method should not be expected to work.
You can still watch Netflix in a safely parked vehicle using certain third-party Android CarPlay AI boxes, HDMI adapters paired with an external streaming device, or a separate phone or tablet. Those are alternatives to CarPlay—not official Netflix-over-CarPlay support.

Does Netflix appear in the CarPlay app list?
No. Installing Netflix on your iPhone does not automatically add it to the CarPlay screen. CarPlay exposes only apps designed and approved for its supported categories, including navigation, audio, communication, parking, charging, fueling, and driving-related functions. Netflix is not documented by Apple or Netflix as a conventional CarPlay app.
You can manage the CarPlay app layout under Settings > General > CarPlay > [your car] > Customize, but that screen can only rearrange or remove compatible CarPlay apps. It cannot convert an ordinary iPhone app into a CarPlay app. See Apple’s CarPlay setup and app-management instructions.

What changed with newer CarPlay?
Apple’s newer CarPlay video-in-the-car capability allows compatible video apps to play in supported vehicles while the vehicle is parked. Apple’s WWDC26 session explains that the feature depends on vehicle support and AirPlay video streaming; when video is unavailable, playback may be limited to audio.
This is not a universal upgrade for every CarPlay vehicle, and it does not mean that Netflix has joined the platform. The app must support Apple’s required video integration, the vehicle must support the feature, and the car must be stationary. Apple’s documentation describes uses such as watching while waiting or charging—not watching while driving.
How to test Apple’s official parked-video route
- Check whether your specific vehicle supports CarPlay video, rather than merely standard CarPlay.
- Update the iPhone and the vehicle’s infotainment software.
- Park safely and connect the iPhone to CarPlay.
- Open a video app that explicitly supports the vehicle’s CarPlay video feature.
- Use the app’s AirPlay or output selector and select the compatible vehicle display if it appears.
- If the display is missing, check vehicle compatibility, software versions, and app support.
For Netflix specifically, do not treat this as a working solution: Netflix currently says that AirPlay with iPhone and iPad is not supported. Another video app working through Apple’s system does not prove that Netflix will work.

Netflix’s help pages state that AirPlay and screen mirroring from iPhone or iPad are no longer supported. Consequently, an AirPlay target may not appear, or an unsupported mirroring setup may produce sound without video or a black screen.
Netflix does document wired video output for some iPhone and iPad configurations using compatible Apple adapters and cables. That information concerns compatible external displays; it is not evidence that Netflix can be projected through ordinary CarPlay. Video output can also depend on the device port, adapter, cable, display, and HDCP content-protection requirements. A setup that mirrors the iPhone home screen or plays YouTube may still block Netflix.

Legitimate ways to watch Netflix in a parked vehicle
1. Use a CarPlay AI box
A CarPlay AI box is usually a third-party Android device that connects to the vehicle’s factory wired CarPlay USB port and displays its own Android interface. Depending on the product, you can install Netflix on the box itself rather than sending Netflix from the iPhone through Apple CarPlay.

This is therefore not Netflix added to Apple’s CarPlay app grid. It is an independent Android system using the vehicle’s screen as its display.
Typical setup
- Confirm that the vehicle has factory wired CarPlay.
- Check the manufacturer’s compatibility list for the exact make, model, year, head unit, and region.
- Plug the box into the vehicle’s CarPlay USB port.
- Pair or connect the phone if required.
- Give the box internet access through Wi-Fi or an iPhone Personal Hotspot.
- Open its Android interface and install Netflix from the available app store if supported.
- Sign in to Netflix and use it only while safely parked.
As one example, Ottocast advertises the OttoAibox P3 Lite as an Android 12 CarPlay AI box with Netflix installation through Google Play. Its listed price was $149 on sale, versus $179 regular price, when observed in August 2026; prices and availability can change. That is a manufacturer claim, not a guarantee that it will work with every vehicle or remain compatible with every Netflix app release.
2. Use an HDMI adapter and streaming stick
An HDMI adapter takes a different route. It connects to the vehicle’s factory wired CarPlay USB port and provides an HDMI input for an external source such as a Netflix-compatible streaming stick, game console, or compatible video-output device.

- Confirm factory wired CarPlay.
- Connect the HDMI adapter to the vehicle’s CarPlay USB port.
- Connect a streaming stick or other HDMI source to the adapter.
- Provide separate power to the source if necessary.
- Connect the source to Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot.
- Select the adapter’s input on the vehicle display.
- Open Netflix on the external device.
Ottocast’s Car TV Mate Pro page listed a $64 sale price versus $149 regular price in August 2026. The product page says it requires factory wired CarPlay and that its built-in Wi-Fi is for wireless CarPlay—not internet access. The streaming source may therefore need its own connection and power.
Phone mirroring through an HDMI adapter may require a compatible Lightning-to-HDMI or USB-C-to-HDMI setup, and the manufacturer limits mirroring support to selected phones. This remains an external HDMI solution, not native Netflix support in CarPlay.
3. Use a phone, tablet, or rear-seat entertainment system
For occasional passenger viewing, a separate phone or tablet is often the simplest option. It avoids vehicle-specific head-unit compatibility, adapter firmware, HDMI handshakes, and extra power requirements. A factory rear-seat entertainment system can be a better long-term choice where the vehicle supports one, especially for children, but availability varies by vehicle.
If the driver needs only background audio, use a legal audio-only alternative instead of attempting to display video. Netflix is not a standard CarPlay audio app, and audio playback must not become a reason to interact with video while driving.

Check compatibility before buying hardware
- Wired or wireless CarPlay: Many AI boxes and HDMI adapters require factory wired CarPlay. Wireless-only systems may not work.
- Exact vehicle compatibility: Check the make, model, year, infotainment system, region, and firmware version.
- Aftermarket head units: Some products exclude particular aftermarket systems. Ottocast identifies certain Sony aftermarket head units as incompatible for the cited adapter.
- BMW and wireless-only systems: Some factory-wireless configurations may require a different product category.
- Internet access: Wireless CarPlay does not automatically provide internet to an HDMI source or Android box.
- Power: Streaming sticks may need separate power, and a vehicle USB port may not provide enough output.
- DRM and HDCP: Netflix can reject unsupported mirroring or video-output paths even when other content works.
- Park lock: Confirm how the system behaves when the vehicle leaves Park. Do not defeat a safety lock.
- Returns and support: Read the seller’s compatibility exclusions, firmware policy, warranty, and return terms before purchasing.
- Region: Hardware prices, shipping, Netflix availability, and catalogues vary by country.
Troubleshooting Netflix video problems
Netflix is missing from CarPlay
That is expected with ordinary CarPlay. Netflix is not documented as a standard CarPlay app, and CarPlay settings cannot add unsupported apps.
The AirPlay target does not appear
Netflix currently documents AirPlay from iPhone and iPad as unsupported. Do not assume that reconnecting CarPlay, reinstalling Netflix, or rearranging CarPlay icons will fix this.
There is sound but a black screen
Likely causes include unsupported mirroring, an HDCP or DRM failure, an incompatible cable or adapter, or the vehicle’s video lockout. A generic adapter that mirrors the phone interface is not necessarily compatible with protected Netflix video.
The adapter powers on but CarPlay does not recognize it
Check whether the vehicle has factory wired CarPlay, whether the correct USB port is being used, and whether the head unit is on the manufacturer’s compatibility list. Wireless-only CarPlay, unsupported aftermarket units, firmware problems, and insufficient power can all prevent connection.
The device has no internet
Connect the Android box or streaming stick to Wi-Fi or an iPhone Personal Hotspot. The adapter’s wireless-CarPlay connection is not automatically an internet service.

Video disappears when the car leaves Park
This may be intentional behavior rather than a defect. Do not bypass the vehicle’s park or motion lock, jailbreak the phone, disable safety controls, or use developer workarounds to keep video playing.
Can you watch Netflix while driving?
No—do not watch Netflix while operating a vehicle. Treat every video method in this article as parked-only. The driver should not watch, select content, troubleshoot, or interact with a video display while the vehicle is moving.
A passenger may watch only when the vehicle, display position, product restrictions, and local law permit it. Laws differ by jurisdiction, and a product advertisement that says “watch videos on the road” should be understood as “watch only when safely parked.” Safety locks are not optional inconveniences to defeat.

Bottom line
Netflix does not currently have confirmed native CarPlay support, and Netflix says AirPlay and iPhone/iPad screen mirroring are unsupported. Apple’s newer parked-video capability may support compatible apps in compatible vehicles, but it should not be presented as a Netflix solution.
If you have factory wired CarPlay, an Android AI box or HDMI adapter can provide a separate hardware route after careful compatibility checks. For the least hassle, use a separate tablet or phone. Whatever method you choose, watch only when safely parked and never bypass vehicle safety controls.
