Apple’s Next-Generation CarPlay Explained: What WWDC 2024 Revealed—and What Became CarPlay Ultra

Apple’s next-generation CarPlay is more than phone projection. Here’s what WWDC 2024 showed about its architecture, automaker customization, vehicle controls, compatibility, and transition to CarPlay Ultra.

Apple’s WWDC 2024 developer sessions showed that its next-generation CarPlay was designed to be far more than an iPhone interface projected onto a center screen. The system could span the vehicle’s driver-facing displays, combine iPhone content with vehicle information, and expose controls such as climate and radio—provided the automaker built the required integration.

Apple later gave this platform a commercial name: CarPlay Ultra. It began rolling out with eligible Aston Martin vehicles in the United States and Canada on May 15, 2025. That makes the WWDC presentation more than a concept, but it does not mean every existing CarPlay vehicle can receive it.

The short version

  • Current CarPlay primarily brings iPhone apps and services to a compatible infotainment display.
  • Next-generation CarPlay, demonstrated at WWDC 2024, was designed to integrate with the vehicle’s instrument cluster, displays, controls, and data systems.
  • Automakers retain substantial control over the interface’s branding, gauges, layouts, colors, and available features.
  • The system combines content rendered by the vehicle with content supplied by the iPhone.
  • Apple later renamed the platform CarPlay Ultra, which began its first production rollout with Aston Martin.

Apple’s WWDC coverage was aimed primarily at automakers, designers, and developers. It demonstrated a platform and its capabilities—not a universal software update for ordinary CarPlay users.

Apple’s design-system session covered the visual experience, while its architecture session explained how the system would communicate with the vehicle.

What Apple showed at WWDC 2024

Apple divided its detailed preview into two complementary sessions: one about design and one about architecture.

A flexible, automaker-customized design system

The design presentation showed how the next generation of CarPlay could be adapted to different vehicles rather than appearing as one identical Apple interface everywhere.

Automakers could configure:

  • Instrument-cluster gauge styles and layouts.
  • Colors, typography, backgrounds, and other visual details.
  • Interfaces for different screen sizes and shapes.
  • One-screen or multi-screen vehicle configurations.
  • Designs suited to different drivetrains, equipment levels, and vehicle features.
  • Brand-specific themes and co-branded elements.

The demonstrations included speedometers, tachometers, navigation, media information, notifications, vehicle status, dynamic content, climate controls, radio, automaker settings, and automaker apps. Those demonstrations represented options supported by the design system, not a mandatory interface that every participating vehicle must use.

That distinction matters. The next-generation system was not presented as Apple completely replacing an automaker’s identity. Instead, Apple described a collaborative experience in which the carmaker could preserve its visual language while using Apple’s framework.

Read Apple’s WWDC 2024 design-system presentation for the company’s examples of gauges, layouts, and vehicle-specific customization.

Why the instrument cluster is the major change

Today’s CarPlay experience generally occupies the vehicle’s compatible infotainment display. Some vehicles offer limited integration with the driver display, but that is not the same as the unified, multi-screen architecture Apple demonstrated.

Next-generation CarPlay was designed to extend across the driver’s screens, potentially including:

  • Multiple control methods: After connection, this Wireless Carplay Adapter uk also supports voice control, steering wheel, touch screen and knob operation. Make you safer while driving
  • Compatible with a variety of wireless car players: CarPlay Wireless is also equipped with USB-C and USB-A ports. Whether your car interface is USB or USB-C, you can use our CarPlay Wireless Adapter. This wireless adapter is only suitable for vehicles equipped with original wired CarPlay. Only suitable for vehicles manufactured in 2016 and later
  • Compact design: The wireless carplay adapter will not block any interface, and its small size ensures that it will not interfere with other devices and save space
  • The center infotainment display.
  • The digital instrument cluster.
  • Additional passenger or auxiliary displays, where the vehicle supports them.
  • Vehicle-specific screens for settings and controls.

In the instrument cluster, a participating automaker could combine familiar iPhone and CarPlay information with vehicle information. A driver might see speed and engine or motor data alongside navigation, media, notifications, and vehicle status.

The final arrangement would depend on the automaker. Apple showed a configurable system with multiple gauge styles and layouts, not one fixed dashboard design. A sports car, electric vehicle, luxury sedan, and SUV could therefore use the same underlying platform while presenting substantially different interfaces.

How the architecture works

The architectural difference is more important than the visual redesign. Standard CarPlay can be understood primarily as an iPhone-powered experience presented on the car’s infotainment screen. Apple’s next-generation architecture was designed to distribute responsibility between the iPhone and the vehicle.

According to Apple’s architecture session, the system combines:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Content rendered locally by the vehicle.
  • Content rendered remotely by the iPhone.
  • Vehicle-state information supplied by the car.
  • Composition of the resulting interface across the vehicle’s displays.

That means it is not simply a video feed from the phone. The vehicle must provide current information about its own state and make selected systems available to the CarPlay integration. Depending on the implementation, that may include speed, tire pressure, driver-assistance status, climate information, radio functions, or other vehicle-specific data.

The automaker also determines which information and controls are exposed. Apple’s system can support deeper integration, but it cannot produce vehicle data that the car does not provide or safely control functions that the manufacturer has not integrated.

This is why next-generation CarPlay requires much more cooperation than ordinary phone projection. The automaker needs compatible displays, data interfaces, control systems, software configuration, and a safety-approved implementation.

What vehicle controls can CarPlay Ultra handle?

Apple’s later CarPlay Ultra announcement identified controls such as climate and radio. It also said the system could display information including driver-assistance status and tire pressure when the automaker provides that data.

That does not mean CarPlay Ultra universally controls every vehicle function. The scope depends on the manufacturer’s hardware, software, data interfaces, safety decisions, and integration choices. One vehicle may offer extensive climate and vehicle-status controls; another may expose a narrower set.

Apple showed the possibility of accessing supported functions through the touchscreens, physical controls, and Siri where the vehicle supports those methods. The goal is a single interface rather than forcing the driver to switch between the carmaker’s native system and a separate projected phone interface.

Current CarPlay versus CarPlay Ultra

Capability Current CarPlay Next-generation CarPlay / CarPlay Ultra
Main infotainment display Supported in compatible vehicles Supported, with a broader vehicle-integrated design
Instrument cluster Generally limited or vehicle-specific A central part of the intended experience
Vehicle controls Limited and dependent on the automaker Deeper controls such as climate and radio where integrated
Vehicle-state data Limited by the vehicle implementation Central to the architecture
Automaker branding Possible, but more constrained Deeply customizable by brand and vehicle
Rendering model Primarily an iPhone-based projected interface Combines vehicle-rendered and iPhone-rendered content
Compatibility Compatible iPhone plus compatible vehicle Vehicle-specific hardware and software integration are required

In practical terms, wireless CarPlay does not automatically mean CarPlay Ultra. A vehicle can support wireless CarPlay while lacking the digital-cluster integration and vehicle-data architecture required for the newer system.

Privacy and vehicle data

Apple said the architecture is designed to use vehicle-state information only where needed and that, in many cases, the information does not leave the vehicle. Apple’s later announcement also said that the privacy protections built into iPhone apply to CarPlay Ultra.

Those are Apple’s privacy claims, not an independent audit of every automaker’s implementation. The exact data flows depend on how each manufacturer integrates its vehicle systems.

The practical qualification is straightforward: Apple says its architecture is designed to limit how vehicle-state data is used and transmitted, but the precise behavior depends on the automaker’s implementation.

What happened after WWDC 2024?

Apple later branded the next-generation platform CarPlay Ultra. On May 15, 2025, Apple announced that CarPlay Ultra had begun rolling out with Aston Martin vehicles in the United States and Canada.

Apple said eligible Aston Martin vehicles equipped with the brand’s next-generation infotainment system could receive a dealer-delivered software update in the following weeks. The system supported all driver-facing screens, including the instrument cluster, and could display vehicle information and provide controls such as climate and radio.

Apple also named Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis as brands committed to working toward CarPlay Ultra support. A brand commitment is not the same as a vehicle being available to buy, a particular model being announced, or an update having been released. Buyers must check the exact vehicle, model year, trim, market, and software status.

Apple’s CarPlay Ultra announcement lists the launch details and the initial compatibility requirements.

Compatibility requirements at the first rollout

For the initial Aston Martin implementation, Apple specified:

  • iPhone 12 or later.
  • iOS 18.5 or later.
  • A compatible Aston Martin vehicle and infotainment system.
  • Initial availability in the United States and Canada.

These requirements should not be assumed for every future CarPlay Ultra vehicle. Automakers may impose different hardware, software, regional, or model-specific requirements.

Can an iPhone update add CarPlay Ultra to any car?

No. An iPhone update may be necessary, but it cannot by itself add next-generation CarPlay to a vehicle designed only for standard CarPlay.

The automaker must support the relevant:

  • Display architecture, including any digital instrument cluster integration.
  • Vehicle-state data and communication interfaces.
  • Vehicle controls and safety systems.
  • Custom system configuration.
  • Software-update and regulatory requirements.
  • Apple integration program for the vehicle.

Apple’s CarPlay developer materials distinguish standard CarPlay from CarPlay Ultra and make clear that automaker integration is fundamental.

Can existing CarPlay cars be upgraded?

There is no universal yes-or-no answer.

Some existing vehicles may qualify if they already have the automaker’s compatible next-generation infotainment hardware. Apple specifically said eligible Aston Martin models could receive CarPlay Ultra through a software update.

Older vehicles with conventional CarPlay hardware are a different case. If the car lacks the required displays, vehicle-data access, control integration, or infotainment architecture, an iOS update cannot provide those capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a used-car buyer, the useful rule is:

  • Compatible next-generation hardware: an official automaker update may be possible.
  • Older hardware without the necessary integration: an upgrade through iOS alone is unlikely.
  • Aftermarket receiver: it may provide standard CarPlay, but generally cannot reproduce factory-level integration with the instrument cluster and vehicle systems.

The aftermarket limitation is an architectural issue, not a blanket Apple statement that every third-party receiver is prohibited. A receiver can replace or add a center display, but it normally cannot replace the vehicle’s complete instrument-cluster and control architecture.

What buyers should verify

“This brand supports CarPlay Ultra” is not enough information. Before buying a new or used vehicle, verify:

  1. The exact make, model, model year, and trim.
  2. The vehicle’s infotainment generation.
  3. Whether the feature is factory-installed or delivered through an official update.
  4. Whether support covers only the center screen or all driver-facing displays.
  5. The required iPhone model and iOS version.
  6. Availability in the country or region where the vehicle will be used.
  7. Whether the dealer or automaker has actually released the required software.
  8. Which vehicle controls and data the specific model exposes.

Imported vehicles can face additional differences in software packages, dealer support, regional availability, and local regulations. Vehicle data may also be unavailable for particular features, in which case the interface will omit those controls or displays.

What WWDC 2024 got right—and what it did not promise

Apple’s sessions established the direction clearly: a unified, customizable in-car interface that combines iPhone services with the vehicle’s own screens and systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

They did not promise that:

  • Every CarPlay-compatible vehicle would receive the new system.
  • Every participating automaker would implement every demonstrated feature.
  • Every brand would use the same gauges or visual design.
  • An aftermarket receiver could reproduce the full factory experience.
  • Apple would control every vehicle function.

The later CarPlay Ultra launch confirmed that the platform reached production, but its availability remained dependent on automaker adoption and vehicle-specific integration.
