To watch an IMSA GTP race intelligently, open the official page for that event, choose the stream listed for your country, then follow class position separately from overall position. GTP (Grand Touring Prototype) cars share the track with other classes, and pit stops, caution periods, and different lap counts can make the timing screen look confusing until you know what each field means.
Start with the official event page
IMSA coverage is organized around individual events rather than one permanent, worldwide channel. Open the race page on IMSA.com and confirm the current schedule, territory, platform, start time, and stream duration before race day. A service listed for one round may not carry the next round, and a stream available in the United States may be unavailable elsewhere.

The entry-list notebook published July 22, 2026 describes flag-to-flag Peacock coverage in the United States and IMSA.TV plus IMSA’s official YouTube channel outside the United States. The notebook is an event-specific notice. Read the current page for the race start, local time conversion, territory restrictions, and whether the named service requires a particular subscription. A reliable pre-race check
- Open the event page from IMSA’s schedule, not a saved link from a previous round.
- Record the published start time and convert it to your local time zone.
- Read the country or territory note beside each platform.
- Check whether the listing is a full race, a windowed broadcast, or a stream with a different start time.
- Open the timing and scoring link as well as the video player. Timing is useful if the video feed starts late, drops out, or shows only a selected class.
What GTP means
GTP stands for Grand Touring Prototype. IMSA’s 2026 WeatherTech Championship Sporting Regulations state: “GTP means a Grand Touring Prototype Car or the Grand Touring Prototype class.” The same document defines a class as “a category for Cars as determined by IMSA and differentiated from others by type of Car Model.” Read the definitions in the 2026 IMSA Sporting Regulations.
That definition explains why a GTP result is not simply a list of the fastest cars in the entire field. IMSA groups cars by the class assigned to their model and technical specification. A race can therefore have several winners: one overall winner and one winner in each class that is running.
The class names you will see

GTD and GTD PRO are also defined in the 2026 regulations. The exact combination of classes changes by event. The 2026 Rolex 24 entry notebook lists GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO, and GTD. The 2026 Laguna Seca event page lists GTP, GTD PRO, and GTD, with 11 GTP entries for that event. Verify the entry list on the page for the race you are watching rather than assuming every class will appear.
Why one race has several separate contests
Multi-class racing puts different categories on the same circuit at the same time. A car can be second overall but first in its class, or fifth overall while fighting for the lead of its own category. Traffic is part of the race: a faster prototype may approach a slower GT car, while two cars in the same class are separated by traffic from another category.
Overall order versus class order
Overall position ranks every car in the race together. Class position ranks only cars carrying the same class designation. If the timing page shows both columns, use class position to answer “Who is winning GTP?” and overall position to answer “Where is that GTP car among the entire field?” Never substitute one for the other.

How to identify the race that matters to you
- Find the class filter or class column in the official timing display.
- Select GTP if you want the prototype battle, or choose another class if that is your interest.
- Note the number of cars in that class from the entry list.
- Compare the leader’s lap count and gap with the next car in the same class.
- Use the overall column only to understand traffic and the broader running order.
The event entry list is the authoritative answer to “which classes are here?” The broadcast graphic may abbreviate labels or show only the class currently being discussed, so use the official list when a label is unclear.
How IMSA timing and scoring works
IMSA’s regulations say that the first and subsequent laps are timed and scored as each car crosses the control line at the timing and scoring station, unless a different procedure is announced. The control line is associated with the automatic timing apparatus and the car’s transponder. This is why a position can change when a car crosses the line even though the two cars appeared to be nose-to-tail elsewhere on the circuit.

- Class position: the car’s rank among entries in its own class.
- Overall position: the car’s rank among every class on track.
- Laps: completed laps recorded at the control line. Cars on different laps cannot be compared by the displayed gap alone.
- Gap: the timing system’s interval to the car or leader shown in that view. Confirm whether the screen is showing a class gap or an overall gap.
- Pit status: a car entering pit lane may fall down the list temporarily while it receives fuel, tires, repairs, or a driver change.
- Last lap and best lap: useful for judging current pace, but a single slow lap may reflect traffic, a caution, or an in-lap rather than a mechanical problem.
Why the order can look wrong
Timing is a sequence of control-line crossings, not a live visual measurement of every car’s position on the circuit. One car may have crossed the line and started another lap while a rival is still completing the previous lap. A pit stop can also create a temporary reversal: the car that is leading after the previous crossing may appear lower until it returns to the track and the timing cycle settles.
Screen layouts vary by broadcast and timing product. The regulations establish how laps are scored; they do not require every television graphic to use the same colors, abbreviations, or columns. If a graphic conflicts with the official timing page, check the class filter, lap count, and most recent control-line crossing before drawing a conclusion.
A simple timing-screen example
Suppose two GTP cars are separated by a car from another class on the circuit. The leading GTP car can be first in GTP but not first overall if another prototype has a different lap count or has already crossed the control line. If the leader enters the pits, its class position may drop for several minutes while a rival remains on track. Wait until both cars have completed comparable pit cycles before deciding that the championship order has changed.

What race strategy is doing to the order
Strategy is the sequence of decisions about fuel, tires, driver stints, traffic, pit timing, and cautions. A pit stop exchanges track position for service. Staying out preserves track position for the moment but may leave a car with older tires or less fuel margin. There is no automatically fastest strategy independent of race length, caution timing, weather, traffic, and the car’s condition.

- Did the car stop, or did its nearest class rival stop?
- Was the stop made under green conditions or during a caution?
- Did the car take fuel, tires, a driver change, or repairs?
- After both cars completed their next laps, who had the better class position and lap count?
Answering those questions prevents a common mistake: treating a temporary timing-screen drop as a lost race. A car that pits under green may surrender several places and recover them when rivals stop. A car that pits under a caution may lose less track time but face a different restart position.
How a full-course yellow changes pit opportunities
The 2026 standard full-course-yellow procedure provides a concrete example of why class order and pit timing must be followed together. After pit lane is declared open, GTP and LMP2 receive the first class-specific pit opportunity. GTD PRO and GTD are permitted to pit on the subsequent lap. After those class-specific opportunities conclude, all classes may pit. The sequence is set out in the 2026 Sporting Regulations.
This rule does not promise that a particular team will gain places. It determines when each class is allowed to use the pit lane during that caution. A team may choose to remain out, may already have completed service, or may need additional work. The eventual advantage depends on fuel, tires, traffic, and the restart.
How to follow a caution strategically
- Note the moment the full-course yellow is announced and whether pit lane is closed or open.
- Identify which class is eligible for the current pit opportunity.
- Watch which cars in that class enter and which stay on track.
- Record whether each stop appears to include fuel, tires, a driver change, or repairs when the broadcast provides that information.
- After the restart, compare class position, laps, and pit status again.
- Wait for every relevant car to complete its next pit cycle before calling the move successful or unsuccessful.
Endurance races and the Rolex 24 context
Long races magnify the difference between an immediate position and the eventual result. The 2026 Rolex 24 entry-list notebook identifies the race length as 24 hours and lists GTP, LMP2, GTD PRO, and GTD. Over that distance, viewers should expect the timing order to change as cars refuel, change drivers, replace tires, and manage repairs. A car that is not leading during an early stint can still be in contention if it remains on the lead lap of its class.

Before the start
- Open the event page and confirm the stream for your territory.
- Open the official entry list and note every class competing.
- Open timing and scoring in a second browser tab or on another screen.
- Write down the class you intend to follow, especially if the broadcast is showing overall order.
During green-flag running
- Watch class position, laps, and the gap to the next same-class car.
- Use overall position to anticipate traffic, not to decide the class winner.
- Mark cars that pit and wait for the timing cycle to settle.
- Compare last-lap pace only after accounting for traffic and pit-in or pit-out laps.
During cautions and restarts
- Note when pit lane opens and which class has the current opportunity.
- Track the cars that stop and the cars that stay out.
- Recheck class position after the restart and again after the next pit cycle.
Rules, bulletins, and version checks
Sporting procedures can be revised by a later regulation, bulletin, or event instruction. IMSA’s 2026 Rules & Regulations index is the starting point for the current WeatherTech Championship sporting and technical documents. Confirm that the document version applies to the race you are watching and look for later event bulletins before relying on a pit-lane or scoring detail.
For timing questions, use the regulations’ control-line and scoring provisions. For coverage questions, use the dated event page or notebook. A broadcast commentator may describe a local procedure, but the official event materials establish the applicable rule and territory notice.
Common viewing mistakes and fixes
Mistake: assuming one platform carries every race
Fix: check the exact event page. Coverage varies by event and geography, and a listed service may show only a particular time window.

Fix: select the GTP class filter or read the class column. Multi-class fields make overall and class order different measurements.

Mistake: calling a pit stop a permanent position loss
Fix: wait until the car and its main class rival have both completed comparable service and crossed the control line again.
Mistake: assuming every class pits on the same yellow-flag lap
Fix: apply the 2026 sequence: GTP and LMP2 receive the first class-specific opportunity, followed by GTD PRO and GTD, then the all-class opportunity.
Mistake: comparing cars on different laps as though the gap were direct
Fix: read lap count first, then determine whether the displayed gap is to the overall or class leader.

What to remember while watching GTP
GTP is one class within a multi-class race, not a synonym for the entire field. The official event page tells you where and when to watch; the entry list tells you which classes are present; the timing system records laps at the control line; and the sporting regulations explain why pit access during a caution can be staggered by class. Follow class position, overall position, laps, gaps, and pit status together, and a seemingly chaotic timing screen becomes a readable account of the race.
