You can wash a washable down jacket without ruining its loft: obey the garment’s care label, use a down-specific cleaner on the gentlest suitable cycle, rinse thoroughly, and dry it completely on low heat with clean dryer balls or tennis balls when the label permits. Stop the dryer periodically to massage apart clumps and redistribute the fill. Damp down stays compressed, so a jacket is not finished when the shell feels dry; every baffle must be fully dry before storage or packing.

Manufacturer instructions take priority over any general method. REI, Patagonia and Arc’teryx each direct owners to the jacket’s own label or model-specific guidance. The steps below reconcile their common advice while identifying where their recommendations differ.

Check the label before touching the jacket

Read the sewn-in care label, then check the maker’s current care page for that model if one is available. Look for washing temperature, cycle, detergent restrictions, drying method, and any warning against machine washing or tumble drying. A general procedure cannot override a label that says “do not wash,” “professional clean only,” or forbids a dryer.

Close every zipper, snap and hook-and-loop tab. Empty the pockets and remove detachable hoods, powder skirts or accessories if the label says they should be washed separately. Brush off loose dirt so it does not become mud in the washer. Inspect seams and repair an open tear first; washing can let down escape through a damaged area.

Before washing, note how the baffles look when dry. A quick photograph helps you compare the loft after drying and identify a baffle that remains flat or lumpy.

Choose the cleaner and washer settings

Use a down-specific detergent

Down-specific wash is designed to clean feathers without leaving the heavy residue that can reduce loft. Patagonia’s current care guidance states: “Use a down-specific detergent and follow the directions on the bottle.” Its product-care instructions are at Patagonia Product Care, Repair, and Washing Instructions. REI specifically names Nikwax Down Wash Direct in its down-jacket washing guide; other manufacturers likewise recommend a cleaner made for down.

Measure the amount printed on the detergent bottle. More soap is not safer: excess cleaner is harder to rinse from the feather clusters. Do not add bleach or fabric softener. Patagonia explicitly advises against both because they can damage the insulation’s performance or leave unwanted residue.

Front loader or top loader?

A front-loading washer is the broadly preferred machine in Patagonia’s guidance because it has no central agitator that can catch or twist a puffy garment. Patagonia also allows a top loader on its hand-wash or delicate setting, so a top loader is not automatically disqualifying. If your top loader has a tall agitator, use the gentlest cycle permitted by the label and avoid forcing the jacket around the post. When the label and machine options conflict, follow the label or ask the manufacturer.

Use cool or warm water only within the label’s stated range. Select the lowest-agitation delicate or hand-wash program and an extra-rinse option if available. A thorough rinse removes detergent that would otherwise make the down feel sticky and encourage clumping.

How to wash a down jacket step by step

  1. Prepare the garment. Empty pockets, close all fasteners, remove detachable parts as directed, and repair any hole before laundering.
  2. Set up the machine. Use a clean washer, the label-approved water temperature, and a delicate or hand-wash cycle. Choose a front loader when the maker recommends it; use a top loader only on its gentlest compatible setting.
  3. Add the cleaner. Pour the measured dose of down-specific detergent into the dispenser or drum as the detergent label directs. Do not mix in bleach, softener or ordinary laundry additives.
  4. Load the jacket alone or with similar light items. Avoid a tightly packed drum. The jacket needs room to move and rinse; an overloaded washer can leave soap in the baffles.
  5. Run the complete cycle. Do not interrupt before the final rinse and spin. If the jacket still feels soapy, run another rinse without adding detergent.
  6. Remove it gently. Support the whole garment instead of lifting it by one shoulder or hood. Wet down is heavy and can pull at seams.
  7. Check the baffles while wet. Press out obvious puddles of water without wringing or twisting. Note any areas where the fill has gathered into hard knots.
  8. Move directly to drying. Do not leave the wet jacket sitting in the washer or a hamper, where the insulation can remain compressed and develop a sour odor.

Drying is the step that prevents lasting clumps

Most failed down-washing jobs are incomplete drying jobs. Water makes feathers stick together, so a jacket can look flat or lumpy for hours before the clusters separate. Keep drying until the baffles are evenly filled, feel light rather than cold and damp, and show no cool spots when you press deeply into the insulation.

Low-heat tumble drying

If the care label permits a dryer, use low heat. High heat can damage shell fabrics, coatings, thread or the down itself. Add the redistribution aid allowed by the manufacturer:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • REI recommends one or two clean tennis balls.
  • Patagonia recommends two clean tennis balls or a large, heavy-cotton towel.
  • Arc’teryx recommends two dryer balls or clean tennis balls in its down home wash guide.

Use clean, colorfast balls. A towel can help knock apart wet clusters, but it also adds moisture and may lengthen the cycle. Never use a scented, oily or dirty object that could transfer residue to the shell.

Start the dryer on low and stop it periodically—about every 20 to 30 minutes is a practical check interval, unless your machine’s instructions require something different. Remove the jacket, shake it gently, and inspect every baffle. Massage compacted areas between your fingers, moving the fill from a dense knot into empty sections. Return it to the dryer and repeat.

Arc’teryx cautions that drying may take upwards of three hours. That is the manufacturer’s estimate, not a universal duration: a small ultralight jacket, a large expedition parka, the washer’s spin speed and the dryer’s airflow can all change the time. Use the condition of the insulation—not the clock—to decide when it is done.

How to break up a stubborn clump

Work on one baffle at a time. Hold the fabric on both sides of the knot and gently pull the insulation apart with your fingertips. Do not pinch feathers through the shell, yank a seam, beat the jacket against a hard surface or wring it. If a lump reforms after several low-heat cycles, redistribute the surrounding fill by pushing it toward the thin area, then continue drying.

Inspect the inside and outside of the jacket if it has reversible construction. A baffle that remains empty may indicate a torn internal channel or leaking down rather than simple moisture. Stop and contact the maker if you see a split seam, missing stitching or a hole that could worsen in the dryer.

What to do when you do not have a dryer

Do not assume that hanging a saturated down jacket is equivalent to tumble drying. Arc’teryx recommends using its service center when a dryer is unavailable and warns that air drying alone may not restore performance. Its specific recommendation is at Arc’teryx’s down home wash guide.

Older Patagonia guidance describes a different fallback: lay the jacket flat in a warm, dry place out of direct sunlight, turn it regularly and separate clumps by hand. That method can take days or longer. Because these instructions differ, the jacket maker’s current guidance for your model controls.

If the label permits managed air drying, use a clean, breathable drying surface rather than a radiator, heater or direct sun. Spread the jacket flat so wet down is not pulled into the bottom hem. Turn it frequently, gently shake it, and massage each baffle as the insulation dries. Keep children, pets and sharp surfaces away from the damp shell. Do not pack or wear the jacket for demanding activity until it is completely dry.

Drying options compared

Option When it fits Redistribution aid Main caution
Low-heat tumble dryer Label permits machine drying; generally the most controllable home method One or two clean tennis balls, two dryer balls, or a heavy-cotton towel when the maker allows it Use low heat and pause to inspect; a cycle length is not a guarantee of dryness
Flat air drying Only when the garment maker permits or directs it Frequent turning, shaking and hand separation Can take days or longer and may not restore loft; avoid direct sun and concentrated heat
Professional service center No suitable dryer, uncertain label, valuable technical garment, or persistent clumping Handled according to the maker’s process Contact the manufacturer first for the correct service route

Check loft, dryness and water repellency

Confirm the insulation is fully dry

Feel along the center of every baffle, the hood, cuffs, collar and hem. A dry shell can hide damp feathers in the thickest channels. Hold the jacket up, shake it lightly and compare its loft with the pre-wash photograph. If any section feels cool, dense or lumpy, continue low-heat drying or the label-approved air-drying routine.

Never compress a partly damp jacket into a stuff sack, suitcase or closet. Moisture trapped in compressed down can create odor, mildew and permanent loss of loft. If you discover dampness after storage, remove the jacket immediately and repeat the full drying check.

Test the durable water repellent (DWR)

Cleaning can reduce the shell’s water-shedding finish, but a DWR treatment is not required after every wash. After the jacket is clean and dry, sprinkle or drip a little water on the outer fabric. If it beads and rolls away, the finish is still functioning. If the fabric darkens and absorbs water instead, follow the garment maker’s instructions for an appropriate DWR refresh. Patagonia and Arc’teryx both advise checking beading and refreshing the treatment only when it no longer works.

Use a treatment compatible with the jacket’s fabric and application method. Do not substitute a random waterproofing spray or coat the down itself. Follow the product label and the garment label, and keep any treatment away from zippers and breathable panels unless the instructions say otherwise.

Store the jacket without crushing its loft

Store the jacket completely dry and loosely expanded. REI recommends hanging it instead of leaving it in a tight stuff sack. Use a wide hanger that supports the shoulders, or place it flat in a cool, dry closet if the maker recommends flat storage. Keep it away from roof leaks, damp basements, radiators and prolonged direct sunlight.

Reserve a stuff sack for transport, not long-term storage. When traveling, compress the jacket only as long as necessary, then unpack and air it out as soon as you arrive. Patagonia’s product-care guidance likewise says to ensure complete dryness before packing; see its current care instructions.

Common problems and precise fixes

The jacket is flat after one dryer cycle

Flatness usually means the down is still damp or compressed. Break up each baffle by hand, add the manufacturer-approved balls, and continue on low heat. Check the thickest areas rather than relying on the timer. If the jacket is fully dry but a section remains empty, inspect for a torn baffle or contact the maker.

Hard lumps remain after repeated drying

Stop and identify whether the lumps feel wet, soapy or mechanically trapped. Wet or soapy clusters need additional drying or rinsing; a damaged channel needs repair. Do not increase the heat to force a faster result. High heat can create a new problem while leaving the underlying clump intact.

The jacket feels sticky or smells of detergent

Residual cleaner is a rinsing problem. Run an extra rinse without detergent if the care label permits, then dry on low with the usual inspections. Do not add fabric softener or fragrance to mask the smell.

Down is leaking through the shell

A few fine feathers can work toward the fabric surface, but pulling them out can enlarge the opening. Gently draw a protruding feather back inside rather than extracting it. If leakage is continuous or a seam is open, stop laundering and ask the manufacturer about repair.

The shell no longer beads water

Loss of beading does not mean the jacket must be re-treated automatically. First confirm that the fabric is clean and dry, then apply a compatible DWR refresh only under the garment maker’s instructions. The treatment should address the shell’s surface; it will not fix clumped or damp insulation.

A practical decision checklist

  • Label: Does it permit washing, and which temperature, cycle and drying method does it specify?
  • Cleaner: Do you have a down-specific detergent and its dosing instructions?
  • Washer: Can you use a front loader or the top loader’s gentlest hand-wash/delicate setting?
  • Rinse: Can the machine provide a complete rinse or extra rinse without softener?
  • Dryer: Is low heat allowed, and do you have clean tennis balls or dryer balls?
  • Inspection: Can you pause often enough to separate clumps and check every baffle?
  • Fallback: If no dryer is available, does the manufacturer approve air drying, or does it direct you to a service center?
  • Storage: Is the jacket fully dry and stored uncompressed?

When to stop and ask the manufacturer

Get model-specific help before washing when the label is missing, contradictory or unreadable; the jacket contains unusual waterproof membranes or bonded construction; the item is marked professional clean only; or a repair is needed. After washing, contact the maker if a baffle stays empty despite complete drying, seams open, the shell coating becomes damaged, or the jacket’s loft does not recover. The label and the manufacturer’s current instructions remain more authoritative than a generic care routine.
