How to Verify an SUV’s Claimed 30 kmpl Mileage in Real-World Driving

A 30 kmpl certification figure is not a daily guarantee. Learn the full-tank, multi-tank method for measuring your SUV accurately and comparing the result fairly.

By CarCody Team

To verify a claimed 30 kmpl, use a repeatable full-tank test: keep tyre pressure, wheels, load and fuel type consistent; measure kilometres from the odometer; measure litres added at the same pump cut-off; and repeat the calculation for at least three tanks. Compare the arithmetic mean with 30 kmpl, while publishing the route mix, average speed, weather, traffic, passengers, cargo, air-conditioning and drive mode.

The result will show how that SUV performs in your operating conditions. It will not recreate the certified laboratory number, because a 30 kmpl ARAI/MIDC-style figure is a certification-cycle result rather than a promise that every owner will achieve 30 km on every trip.

What a 30 kmpl claim actually represents

A mileage claim of 30 kmpl means the vehicle covered 30 kilometres per litre under a defined certification procedure. It is not a guaranteed daily-driving result. Certification tests are designed to be repeatable, so vehicles can be compared under the same prescribed conditions; public roads introduce traffic, gradients, weather, payload changes and driving decisions that the cycle does not reproduce exactly.

The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) Vehicle Evaluation Laboratory lists constant-speed, highway and city fuel-consumption tests, along with speedometer and odometer calibration. The Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) procedure index describes chassis-dynamometer testing, road-simulation methods and defined fuel-consumption calculations. ARAI’s technical booklet calculates fuel consumption from measured carbon dioxide using fuel-specific conversion factors. Those procedures explain why the published figure is useful for standardized comparison but cannot be treated as an owner’s guaranteed trip result.

Aspect Certification figure Owner verification
Purpose Repeatable regulatory or comparison measurement Estimate the vehicle’s operating result on a specified real-world route
Test setting Defined constant-speed, highway and city procedures, including chassis-dynamometer and road-simulation methods Public roads that reflect the owner’s intended urban and highway use
Fuel-consumption calculation ARAI procedure uses measured CO2 and fuel-specific conversion factors Kilometres driven divided by litres added at refill
Distance measurement Speedometer and odometer calibration are part of the laboratory evaluation Use the vehicle odometer consistently and investigate possible odometer error if results remain implausible
Meaning of the result A standardized certified-cycle value An average for the recorded route, vehicle condition and weather, not a universal correction to the certified number

There is no defensible universal percentage to subtract from 30 kmpl. Owner results vary with the factors you record, so a measured average should be presented with its route and conditions rather than converted using a made-up correction factor.

Decide what you are trying to measure

Write the test question before filling the tank. “What does this SUV return on my weekday commute?” requires a route dominated by that commute. “How does it perform in mixed use?” requires a route whose urban and highway portions represent your normal split. A short, unusually uncongested drive can answer neither question reliably.

Keep the test objective unchanged across all tanks. If you switch from a city-heavy route to a highway trip, report it as a different operating case instead of combining unlike runs into one unexplained number.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Prepare the SUV and record its identity

Begin with a written record so another person can understand exactly what was tested. Record:

  • The exact vehicle variant, model year if relevant to the identification, engine and transmission.
  • The odometer reading at the first fill.
  • Tyre size, wheel specification and fuel type.
  • The drive mode selected for the run.
  • The intended urban/highway route split.

Do not change wheels, tyres, fuel type or recurring load partway through a comparison. If a change is unavoidable, start a new test series and label it separately.

Set cold tyre pressure

Set every tyre to the manufacturer’s specified cold pressure before the first run. Check pressure before subsequent runs under comparable cold conditions. Record the pressure you used and keep the same wheels and load throughout the comparison. Under- or over-inflation can alter rolling resistance and therefore change the result; more importantly, changing pressure between tanks makes the comparison less controlled.

Keep the load consistent

Use the same regular occupants and cargo whenever possible. Record passengers and cargo for each run. A fully loaded family trip and a solo commute are different operating cases, even when the route is identical.

Use the full-tank method, step by step

The most practical owner protocol measures fuel actually added rather than trusting the dashboard range estimate. Follow the same sequence on every tank.

  1. Identify the starting condition. Record the exact SUV variant, engine, transmission, odometer reading, tyre size and fuel type. Note the date and the route you intend to drive.
  2. Standardize the vehicle. Set all tyres to the manufacturer’s specified cold pressure. Keep the same wheels, tyres, passengers and cargo arrangement for the comparison.
  3. Fill to a repeatable level. At the same station when practical, fill the tank to the same pump cut-off. If the pump displays litres, record them; photograph the receipt so the transaction can be checked later. Do not treat the dashboard’s estimated range as a fuel measurement.
  4. Reset the trip meter. Reset it immediately after the fill. Select the drive mode you are evaluating and note whether the air-conditioning is on as it normally is for that use case.
  5. Drive the representative route. Record the urban/highway split, distance, average speed, traffic, weather, passengers, cargo, air-conditioning use and drive mode. Drive normally for the intended use rather than trying to maximize the number for one tank.
  6. Refill at the same cut-off. Return to the same station when possible and refill to the same pump cut-off. Record litres added from the pump, retain the receipt and note any change in fuel source or blend.
  7. Calculate the run. Divide kilometres driven by litres added. Keep all intermediate digits and round only the final reported value. Repeat the complete procedure for at least three tanks.

Using litres added at refill accounts for the fuel consumed since the previous full tank. A dashboard average or range estimate can be useful as a secondary observation, but it is not the measurement used for this calculation.

Log the conditions that can move the result

Two correctly measured runs can differ because their operating conditions differ. Keep a log for every tank containing:

  • Distance and urban/highway split.
  • Average speed and a description of traffic.
  • Weather and ambient conditions.
  • Fuel type and, if known, any change in fuel blend or supplier.
  • Tyre pressure, wheel and tyre setup.
  • Passengers and cargo.
  • Air-conditioning use.
  • Transmission and drive mode.
  • Any unusual detour, long idle, road closure, steep climb or mechanical symptom.

These are not optional details when the objective is to explain a difference from 30 kmpl. ARAI notes that fuel, ambient conditions, average road speeds and the urban/highway split matter when selecting representative regions. Keeping those variables visible lets a reader distinguish a route effect from a measurement error.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Calculate each tank and the multi-tank average

For each run, use this formula:

kmpl = kilometres driven ÷ litres added

Use the distance measured since the previous full fill and the litres required to return to the same cut-off. Do not use the tank’s nominal capacity, the fuel gauge position or the dashboard range estimate in place of litres added.

After at least three tanks, calculate the arithmetic mean of the individual kmpl results:

multi-tank average = (run 1 kmpl + run 2 kmpl + run 3 kmpl + …) ÷ number of runs

Keep the individual runs alongside the mean. The spread shows whether the route was stable. A single unusually high or low tank should not be presented as the SUV’s normal mileage, and a short trip is not a reliable verdict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Compare your average with 30 kmpl without overstating it

Compare the multi-tank average with the advertised 30 kmpl as an operating-range comparison. State the route, weather, load and number of tanks in the same sentence as the result. For example, a report can say that the SUV averaged a measured value over three tanks on a specified mixed urban/highway route, then identify how that average compares with 30 kmpl. It should not imply that the certified test was reproduced on public roads.

Do not publish a percentage “real-world correction” unless you have a properly defined dataset that supports it. The available evidence does not establish a typical percentage gap between a certified 30 kmpl figure and owner results.

When the difference is modest

A difference can reflect ordinary variation in speed, congestion, weather, air-conditioning, load or route mix. Preserve the log and report the conditions rather than presenting the certified number as an expected daily minimum.

When the difference is large

Repeat the measurement before alleging that the claim is false. Check that the same pump cut-off was used, litres were copied correctly, the trip distance was not reset accidentally and the odometer reading is plausible. Then inspect tyre pressure, possible brake drag, service condition, fuel quality and odometer error. If the discrepancy persists after controlled, multi-tank testing, document every run and the corrective checks performed.

Make comparisons between two tests fair

If you compare two SUVs, two drive modes or two routes, change one meaningful variable at a time where practical. The following axes explain why two honest measurements may differ:

Comparison axis What to keep visible
Route mix Urban and highway distance or percentage in each run
Load Passengers and cargo carried
Average speed Recorded average speed and traffic conditions
Temperature and weather Ambient conditions, rain, wind or unusual heat
Fuel Fuel type, station and any known blend change
Tyres and pressure Tyre size, wheels and cold pressure
Air-conditioning Whether it was used and whether usage was typical
Transmission and drive mode Mode selected for the complete run
Number of tanks Single run versus a multi-tank average

For a meaningful comparison, use the same route, similar weather, equivalent payload, identical fuel procedure and the same number of tanks. If those controls cannot be met, present the results as separate cases instead of ranking them as if they were laboratory measurements.

How ARAI’s in-service guidance relates to owner testing

ARAI’s in-service conformity guidance says testing should use normal driving patterns, conditions and payloads. It states that the test should be representative of vehicles operated on their real driving routes, with their normal load and the usual professional driver of the vehicle.

“The conformity of in-service vehicles or engines of a family shall be demonstrated by testing vehicles on the road operated over their normal driving patterns, conditions and payloads.”

For light-duty conformity sampling, ARAI’s 2026 guidance states a minimum in-service age of 15,000 km or six months, whichever is later. That is a regulatory sampling requirement, not a rule that an owner must wait that long to measure mileage. It does reinforce the principle that representative road operation matters when evaluating real-world conformity.

Report the result so another driver can reproduce it

A useful mileage report includes the vehicle identity, fuel type, tyre and wheel details, cold pressure, recurring load, route split, average speed, traffic, weather, air-conditioning use, drive mode, each tank’s kilometres, each tank’s litres added, the calculated kmpl and the arithmetic mean.

Include receipts or pump readings where available, identify the station and pump cut-off procedure, and state how many tanks were measured. If one run had an unusual event, such as severe congestion or a detour, mark it rather than silently blending it into the average.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Report the certified 30 kmpl figure and your measured average as two different kinds of evidence: the first is a standardized certification result, while the second describes the SUV under the stated operating conditions. That wording prevents readers from mistaking either figure for a universal promise.

Common mistakes that invalidate a mileage check

  • Using one short trip: A single commute can be dominated by a traffic jam, a tailwind or an unusually light load.
  • Stopping at different fuel levels: Refilling at inconsistent cut-offs makes litres added incomparable.
  • Using the dashboard estimate: The range or displayed average is not a substitute for measured litres from the pump.
  • Changing tyre pressure or load: A different pressure, wheel, passenger count or cargo load changes the test conditions.
  • Hiding route changes: A highway tank and a city tank should not be presented as one homogeneous result.
  • Rounding each run early: Round only the final displayed result; retain unrounded values for the mean.
  • Assuming a certified number is a daily guarantee: Certification cycles and public-road operation answer different questions.
  • Blaming the vehicle after one poor tank: Repeat the test and check pressure, brake drag, service condition, fuel quality and odometer error first.

Bottom line for a claimed 30 kmpl SUV

The credible way to test the claim is a controlled, full-tank, multi-run measurement—not a dashboard screenshot or one impressive highway trip. Keep the SUV, route and conditions documented; calculate kilometres divided by litres added; repeat for at least three tanks; and publish both the individual runs and arithmetic mean. Use that average to describe what the SUV delivers in your real driving, while treating 30 kmpl as the certified-cycle benchmark it is.
