To engage Sand mode in a Ford Bronco, start the engine, rotate the G.O.A.T. drive-mode controller once to open the mode menu in the instrument cluster, then rotate it again to highlight and engage Sand. Do not change modes while cruise control or Trail Control is active. Sand mode is intended for off-road soft, dry sand or deep snow—not dry, hard pavement—and the exact controls and available features depend on your Bronco’s model year, series, 4×4 system and equipment.
Read your vehicle’s owner’s manual before using these steps. Ford has changed mode sets and controls between model years and trims, so a 2024 procedure or feature should not be assumed to apply to every Bronco.

What Sand G.O.A.T. mode is for
Ford describes G.O.A.T. modes as vehicle-system calibrations matched to driving conditions. In newer Ford product information, including the 2026 Bronco Base description, Sand is a loose-surface setting for sand and deep snow. The 2024 Bronco Owner’s Manual gives the more specific instruction: “For off-road driving on soft, dry sand or deep snow.”
When selected, the mode changes how several systems respond rather than adding traction by itself. Ford’s European description of the 2025 Bronco identifies throttle response, gearbox shift points and steering response as examples of settings optimized by G.O.A.T. modes. Ford’s newer product information characterizes Sand as having a more aggressive throttle response to help the vehicle maintain momentum on a loose surface.
#1 Best Overall
- HIGH ACCURACY: Every ETENWOLF's pencil tire gauge is calibrated to ANSI B40.1 Grade B, it is accurate to 2% of span in the middle 50% of range and 3% of span in the lower and upper 25% of range. Each ETENWOLF pencil tire pressure gauge is manually calibrated and has its unique calibration number printed on the pencil
- WIDER RANGE: ETENWOLF's tire gauge offers 2 pressure ranges: 10-50PSI, 20-120PSI for all types of vehicles
- ALL METAL: ETENWOLF tire gauges are made of all solid metal, zinc alloy head and stainless steel body, they are durable and can be used for many years unless you lose them
- DEFLATION: You can also use ETENWOLF's tire gauge to deflate tires when the tire pressure is overinflated
- 16 CAPS IN 2 CASES: ETENWOLF even offers 16 valve stem caps, so you won't worry about losing tire caps anymore
That calibration cannot overcome unsuitable tires, inadequate clearance, hidden obstacles or a driver exceeding the vehicle’s ability. Treat Sand mode as an aid for choosing appropriate system behavior, not as a guarantee that the Bronco will climb, float or avoid getting stuck.
Check your Bronco before selecting a mode
Confirm the model year and series
Bronco mode counts and mode names vary by series and model year. Ford’s 2025 materials show different mode sets across series, so one Bronco may have functions or displays another does not. Four-wheel-drive controls, lockers, stabilizer-bar functions and camera behavior are also equipment-dependent.
Use the owner’s manual supplied for your vehicle and follow the labels shown in its instrument cluster and center-console controls. If your controller or menu does not match the procedure below, stop and use the instructions for your Bronco rather than forcing a selection. A different number of available modes is not, by itself, a fault.
Make sure the engine is running
The 2024 manual’s selection procedure assumes the engine is running. Park safely or remain stopped while you identify the control and confirm the mode shown in the cluster. Do not experiment with unfamiliar switches while the vehicle is moving or while you are already committed to a difficult section of trail.
Cancel cruise control and Trail Control first
Ford warns that changing G.O.A.T. modes while cruise control or Trail Control is active may not work as expected. Cancel either system before opening the mode menu. This is a common reason a requested mode change appears not to take effect, and it also gives you direct control while you verify the new calibration.
Identify the surface before choosing Sand
Sand is for loose, soft surfaces. Ford’s manual specifically names soft, dry sand and deep snow. A snowy or icy paved road is a different use case: it is a firm, slippery surface, for which Ford assigns Slippery mode when that mode is available and appropriate for the vehicle. The word “snow” in the Sand description does not make Sand the default for every winter road.
How to engage Sand mode
- Start the engine. Verify that the Bronco is in a safe, controlled situation and that cruise control and Trail Control are off.
- Rotate the G.O.A.T. drive-mode controller once. On the 2024 Bronco procedure, the first rotation brings the G.O.A.T. mode selection menu into the instrument cluster.
- Rotate the controller a second time to select and engage the desired mode. Continue until Sand is highlighted, then allow the vehicle to confirm the selection in the cluster.
- Read the display confirmation. Check that Sand, rather than another mode, is shown before entering loose terrain. If the display does not confirm the change, cancel any active cruise or Trail Control function and repeat the procedure according to your manual.
- Verify any additional prompts. Depending on the Bronco’s equipment, the vehicle may present separate 4×4, differential, stabilizer-bar or camera controls. Do not assume a prompt or function exists on every series.
The two-rotation sequence is documented for the 2024 Bronco. Ford may use different controls or menu behavior on another year, market or trim; the vehicle-specific manual takes precedence. If a button, rotary switch or screen in your Bronco is labeled differently, use that vehicle’s instructions instead of trying to duplicate a video or description made for another model.

What changes when Sand mode is active
Throttle and momentum
Sand mode uses a more aggressive throttle calibration intended to help maintain momentum on loose surfaces. That does not mean the accelerator should be used abruptly or that speed is automatically safer. The mode changes the vehicle’s response to your input; you still decide how much throttle the terrain can support. Smooth, deliberate inputs remain important when the surface changes from loose sand to a firmer patch.
Transmission behavior
Ford identifies gearbox shift points as one of the settings optimized by G.O.A.T. modes. The resulting shifts can feel different from Normal or other road modes because the calibration is intended for loose-surface driving. A different shift pattern is therefore expected and is not evidence that the transmission has changed mechanically.
Steering response
Ford’s European 2025 description also lists steering response among the optimized settings. A different steering feel after selecting Sand is therefore expected, but it remains your responsibility to account for ruts, side slopes and obstacles. Keep your attention on the path rather than assuming the mode will correct a line that is too steep or uneven.
Brake-over-accelerator behavior
Ford states that off-road modes disable brake-over-accelerator. Return to a road mode before regular-road driving because the pedal behavior is not the same as in Normal, Eco, Sport or Slippery. The exact road modes available depend on your Bronco. Confirm the road-mode indication in the cluster after leaving the loose surface.

4H and 4L on the 2024 procedure
The 2024 Bronco manual says Sand mode defaults to 4H and allows 4L to be selected. Whether your Bronco offers those selections, and the correct conditions for changing them, depends on its 4×4 system and configuration. Use the 4×4 instructions in your manual rather than treating 4L as an automatic requirement for every sandy track. Sand mode and a particular 4×4 range are related controls, but they are not interchangeable commands.
Electronic differentials
The 2024 manual also describes electronic differential functions in connection with off-road operation. Lockers and related controls are not universal Bronco equipment. If your vehicle has them, follow the manual’s engagement conditions and dashboard indicators; if it does not, there will be no equivalent control to activate. Never infer that a locker is engaged merely because Sand appears in the display.
Stabilizer-bar and camera functions
Some configurations include an electronic stabilizer-bar function, and the 2024 manual notes front-camera activation at low speeds. These are equipment- and configuration-dependent details. Do not infer that a camera view, disconnecting stabilizer bar or associated prompt will appear on every Bronco in Sand mode. If a camera view disappears as speed rises, that can reflect the system’s operating limits rather than a mode failure.

Sand mode versus Slippery and road modes
Choose the mode for the surface you are actually driving on. Ford’s descriptions distinguish loose off-road terrain from firm slippery roads.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Mode | Ford-assigned conditions | Use decision |
|---|---|---|
| Sand | Off-road soft, dry sand or deep snow; newer Ford information describes loose surfaces including sand and deep snow. | Select when the surface is loose and the vehicle is being driven off road. |
| Slippery | Firm slippery conditions such as rain, snow or ice, subject to the exact model manual. | Use for slippery paved or firm surfaces when this mode is available; do not substitute Sand simply because the road is snowy. |
| Normal, Eco or Sport | Regular-road driving modes listed by Ford as alternatives to off-road modes; availability varies. | Return to the road mode specified for ordinary pavement after leaving loose terrain. |
Mode names and availability differ by Bronco series. The table describes Ford’s condition-based distinction, not a promise that every vehicle has every mode. If your model does not display one of these names, select the closest road or surface mode identified in its manual rather than relying on a generic mode chart.
Do not use Sand mode on dry, hard pavement
Ford’s 2024 Bronco Owner’s Manual gives this explicit warning:
“When using Sand mode on dry/hard pavement, your vehicle could experience vibration, driveline bind up, damage and potential excessive tire and vehicle wear.”
Sand mode is not intended for firm slippery surfaces either. If you leave the beach, trail or other loose area and return to ordinary pavement, change back to Normal, Eco, Sport or Slippery as appropriate for your Bronco and the road conditions. Off-road modes disable brake-over-accelerator, so leaving the vehicle in Sand mode can affect both driveline operation and pedal behavior.

If you notice vibration or a sensation of driveline wind-up after the surface becomes hard, stop using Sand and change to the appropriate road mode. Do not continue simply because the mode indicator remains illuminated.
Tire pressure: use the Bronco’s label, not a universal sand number
Ford identifies the recommended tire pressure on the tire label or safety certification label located on the driver-side B-pillar or door area. Check that label and the owner’s manual for your specific Bronco.

- PRESSURE RANGE 0-75 PSI: ETENWOLF’s tire gauge can measure pressure of pickup, motorcycle, truck, bike, SUV, RV or ATV
- EASY TO READ IN THE DARKNESS: The large glow dial helps you clearly read the pressure at night or in low light
- EASY TO USE: 360 degree swivel chuck allows you to measure and take a reading from a tire valve at any angle
- ACCURACY IN EXTREME WEATHER: PSI gauge works normally even in extreme cold or hot weather
There is no single Ford-approved sand pressure that applies to every Bronco in the material covered here, and the manufacturer guidance reviewed does not establish a universal instruction to air down for this article. Tire size, load, wheel package, temperature and vehicle configuration all affect the correct pressure. A basic automotive tire pressure gauge is a practical way to verify the pressure shown on your vehicle’s label.
If you intentionally change pressure for a particular off-road plan, use instructions appropriate to your tires and vehicle, then restore the label pressure before normal road travel. Do not replace the vehicle-specific label with a forum number or a pressure copied from another Bronco. Check pressure when the tires are in the condition specified by the manual, and recheck after any change rather than assuming the reading stayed constant.

- Identify the terrain. Confirm that the surface is loose sand or another condition Ford assigns to Sand mode, rather than hard pavement or a firm slippery road.
- Check the vehicle label and tires. Verify the recommended pressure with a tire gauge and inspect for visible damage before entering the soft surface.
- Start the engine and cancel assistance systems. Turn off cruise control and Trail Control before changing modes.
- Select Sand. Rotate the controller once to open the menu, rotate it again to select Sand, and verify the confirmation in the instrument cluster if your vehicle uses the 2024-style controls.
- Review equipment-specific prompts. Use only the 4×4, 4L, differential, stabilizer-bar or camera functions your Bronco is equipped with and whose operating conditions are covered by its manual.
- Drive within the terrain and vehicle limits. Sand mode helps calibrate vehicle responses; it does not remove the need to judge surface firmness, obstacles, slope or available traction.
- Switch back before pavement. Select an appropriate road mode when leaving loose terrain and confirm that the road-mode indication is displayed.
Troubleshooting common problems
The mode will not engage
- Confirm that the engine is running.
- Cancel cruise control and Trail Control, both of which Ford identifies as possible conflicts when changing modes.
- Repeat the controller sequence: one rotation to open the menu, a second to select and engage, for vehicles using the 2024 procedure.
- Check the owner’s manual if the controller, menu or confirmation message differs from this sequence.
The Bronco feels different after selection
Changes in throttle response, shift timing or steering response are consistent with Ford’s description of G.O.A.T. calibration. Compare the mode shown in the cluster with your intended selection. If vibration or driveline binding occurs on hard pavement, leave Sand mode and return to a road mode immediately.
A feature shown in another Bronco is missing
Mode counts and equipment vary by series, year and 4×4 configuration. A missing locker control, stabilizer-bar prompt, low-speed camera view or separate 4L option may simply reflect your vehicle’s specification. Follow the controls and capabilities listed for your Bronco rather than attempting to reproduce another trim’s setup.
The vehicle is on a snowy paved road
Snow alone does not make Sand mode appropriate. Ford’s Sand wording refers to deep snow in an off-road context, while Slippery is assigned to firm slippery conditions such as snow and ice. Use the mode guidance in your manual for the actual surface beneath the tires.
The mode changes back or the display is unclear
First verify what the cluster actually shows, then compare the control sequence with your model-year manual. A menu that looks different, a missing confirmation, or a different rotary-switch action is a reason to stop and consult the manual, not to keep turning controls while moving. Confirm that no cruise or Trail Control function remains active before trying again.

Key points to remember
- Sand mode is an off-road calibration for loose conditions, especially soft, dry sand or deep snow as stated in the 2024 manual.
- On vehicles using the 2024 controls, rotate the G.O.A.T. controller once to open the menu and again to engage the selected mode with the engine running.
- Do not change modes with cruise control or Trail Control active.
- Expect calibrated changes to throttle, shift points and steering response, but do not treat the mode as a guarantee of traction.
- Never use Sand mode on dry, hard pavement because Ford warns of vibration, driveline bind-up, damage and excessive tire or vehicle wear.
- Use the tire pressure shown on your Bronco’s driver-side label and verify it with a gauge; there is no universal Ford sand-pressure number for all Broncos.
- Check your own owner’s manual for 4H, 4L, lockers, stabilizer-bar operation, cameras and available modes because those features differ by year and series.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I select Sand G.O.A.T. mode in a Ford Bronco?
With the engine running, cancel cruise control and Trail Control. On the 2024 Bronco procedure, rotate the G.O.A.T. controller once to open the instrument-cluster menu, then rotate it again until Sand is selected and engaged. Confirm Sand in the display. Controls can differ by model year, market and trim, so use your Bronco’s owner’s manual if the menu or switch behaves differently.

Can I use Sand mode on a snowy paved road?
Usually not. Ford’s Sand wording covers off-road soft, dry sand or deep snow. A paved road covered by snow, ice or rain is a firm slippery surface, for which Ford assigns Slippery mode when available. Select the mode specified by your manual for the surface under the tires; snow by itself does not make Sand mode appropriate.
Does Sand mode automatically select 4H or 4L?
The 2024 Bronco manual says Sand mode defaults to 4H and allows 4L to be selected. That detail depends on the Bronco’s 4×4 system and equipment, so it should not be generalized to every year or series. Follow the separate 4×4 and range-change instructions in your vehicle’s manual, and do not treat 4L as mandatory for every sandy route.
What vehicle settings change in Sand mode?
Ford describes G.O.A.T. modes as calibrations that can optimize throttle response, gearbox shift points and steering response. Newer Ford information describes a more aggressive throttle response in Sand to help maintain momentum. Off-road modes also disable brake-over-accelerator. These changes assist your inputs; they do not guarantee traction or remove the need to judge obstacles, slopes and surface firmness.
Why will Sand mode not engage?
Make sure the engine is running, cancel cruise control and Trail Control, and repeat the two-rotation sequence if your Bronco uses the 2024 controls. Check for a confirmation in the instrument cluster. If your controller or menu differs, stop and follow the instructions for your model year rather than forcing a selection.
Do all Ford Broncos have the same G.O.A.T. modes and equipment?
No. Ford’s 2025 materials show different mode counts and mode sets by series. Lockers, 4H and 4L controls, electronic stabilizer-bar functions and low-speed front-camera behavior are also configuration-dependent. A feature shown in another Bronco may simply not be installed on yours.
What tire pressure should I use on sand?
Use the pressure on your Bronco’s tire or safety-certification label on the driver-side B-pillar or door area, together with the owner’s manual. There is no single Ford-approved sand pressure for every Bronco in the guidance covered here. A basic automotive tire-pressure gauge helps verify the vehicle-specific value; do not substitute an unverified forum number.
What happens if I leave Sand mode on pavement?
Ford warns that using Sand mode on dry, hard pavement can cause vibration, driveline bind-up, damage and potentially excessive tire or vehicle wear. When you leave loose terrain, return to Normal, Eco, Sport or Slippery as appropriate for your Bronco and the road, then confirm the road-mode indication in the cluster.
