Use XPENG’s Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and Lane Centering Control (LCC) only as driver assistance. Follow the manual supplied for your exact model, market and software version; stay responsible for steering and braking; and be ready to take over immediately. If markings, visibility, traffic, weather or the vehicle’s behaviour become unsuitable, disengage the assistance and drive manually.
Feature names, controls, operating limits and availability differ between XPENG models and European editions. The instructions for a G9 in one market should not be treated as a universal recipe for every XPENG.

Start with the correct XPENG manual
Before trying any assistance function, identify four things:
- Your exact model and model year.
- The country or market in which the car is registered and operated.
- The installed vehicle software version.
- The precise feature name shown in the car, such as ACC or LCC.
XPENG’s manual portal provides different model and language editions. Read the edition supplied for your vehicle to learn the activation control, confirmation symbols, permitted operating conditions, cancellation method and override behaviour. A description from another model or country may omit a warning or describe a different software implementation.

The owner’s manual is also the authority when the on-screen animation, a warning message and your expectation do not agree. Treat the display as an indication of system status, not proof that the car has detected every hazard.
What ACC and LCC actually do
| Function | Primary role | Conditions described in the cited manuals | What remains your responsibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) | Controls vehicle speed and following distance under its operating conditions. | The G9 manual warns that ACC does not work in all traffic, weather or road conditions. | Observe traffic and road conditions, maintain safe control and brake or steer when necessary. ACC is not a collision guarantee. |
| Lane Centering Control (LCC) | Assists steering to keep the vehicle within the current lane. | The cited UK manual describes clear lane lines on both sides and standard road curvature. In that edition, ACC operates synchronously when LCC is activated. | Keep your hands and attention available, monitor lane position and take over if the markings, curve or vehicle response is unsuitable. |
The UK description is an example from that manual edition, not a specification for every European XPENG. Your car may use different names, prerequisites or boundaries.
XPENG’s G9 manual includes this explicit warning: “The driver should be fully responsible for driving safety, and always hold the steering wheel while driving, observe the road conditions, and take over the vehicle in time if there is any danger.” That statement should be read as a safety obligation, not as marketing language about autonomous driving.

Learn the controls while parked
With the vehicle stationary, use the relevant manual to find how assistance starts, how the instrument display confirms an active or standby state, and how to cancel or override it. Know the difference between a temporary suspension, a full cancellation and a driver input that takes control back. Do not experiment with an unfamiliar control in moving traffic.
Set your driving position
- Adjust the seat, mirrors and steering position before selecting a driving aid.
- Make sure you can reach the brake, accelerator and steering wheel without changing posture.
- Secure loose items and ensure every occupant is seated and belted.
Keep the forward view clear
Inspect the windscreen and the areas visible to the vehicle’s cameras. Remove dirt, frost, condensation, stickers or objects that obstruct the view. Ordinary microfiber car-cleaning cloths can help with routine windscreen and camera-area preparation, but no particular cloth is required and cleaning does not repair a sensor fault. If a warning remains after the area is clean, follow the manual and contact XPENG support or an authorised service channel.

Choose a suitable first drive
The MyXPENG UK owner guide advises beginning in familiar, suitable conditions while fully attentive. A quiet, well-marked road in good visibility is a better place to understand the system than a congested motorway, a construction zone or a wet night. This preparation advice does not replace the vehicle manual.
Use ACC without surrendering control
Set a speed and gap you can supervise
ACC can regulate speed and the distance to a vehicle ahead when its conditions are met. Select a lawful speed and a following distance that gives you time to react to braking, merging traffic, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. The system’s selected setting is not a guarantee that the resulting gap is safe in every situation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWatch for situations the system may not handle
The G9 handbook states that ACC does not work in all traffic, weather and road conditions. Expect reduced suitability where visibility is poor, lane geometry changes, vehicles cut in, traffic stops abruptly, road users are partly obscured or the road layout is unusual. Do not interpret a steady assistance icon as confirmation that every object or conflict has been recognised.
Be ready for braking and acceleration changes
Traffic flow can change faster than a driver expects. Keep your eyes on the road and your foot positioned so you can brake promptly. If the vehicle slows, accelerates or follows at a distance you consider unsafe, take over and cancel ACC when it is safe to do so. Never use a phone, read, eat, reach for an object or perform another task because ACC is active.
Use LCC only when the lane can be read clearly
Lane markings are a prerequisite, not a promise
The cited UK manual describes LCC for roads with clear lane lines on both sides and standard curvature. Faded paint, snow, standing water, glare, shadows, temporary markings, merges, splits and complex junctions can make lane interpretation unreliable. If either boundary becomes unclear, supervise the car as though the assistance may stop or steer away from the intended path.

Curves, narrow lanes and roadworks need extra caution
A standard curve in the manual’s description does not mean every bend is suitable. Reduce speed manually when the road, sight distance or traffic requires it. At lane reductions, contraflows, temporary barriers and diverted routes, be prepared to steer yourself rather than waiting for LCC to resolve the new layout.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep your hands and attention available
LCC is steering assistance, not hands-free driving. Keep a normal driving posture and monitor lane position, adjacent traffic and vulnerable road users. If the car’s path differs from your intended path, steer immediately and cancel the function once stable.
A safe operating routine
- Confirm suitability. Check the road, weather, visibility, markings and traffic before activating assistance. If any are doubtful, drive manually.
- Activate exactly as the manual describes. Use the model-specific control and verify the state shown by the vehicle display.
- Scan continuously. Look far ahead, check mirrors and blind spots, and monitor lane position, speed and the gap to traffic.
- Maintain immediate control. Keep your hands ready on the wheel and your foot ready to brake. Do not undertake a secondary task.
- Intervene early. Brake or steer as soon as the developing situation requires it; do not wait for an alert.
- Cancel when conditions change. Disengage assistance before entering roadworks, unclear markings, severe weather or any area where you cannot confidently supervise the system.
- Confirm manual control. After cancelling or overriding, verify that your speed and steering are under your direct control before continuing.
European road situations that demand manual driving
Motorways and high-speed roads
Long, well-marked motorway sections may be suitable for assistance when your manual permits it, but speed increases the consequence of a missed hazard. Watch for rapid lane changes, emergency vehicles, debris, stopped traffic and temporary speed limits. Do not assume that a motorway sign or lane configuration is understood merely because the assistance indicator remains on.
Urban streets and roundabouts
Dense urban traffic brings pedestrians, cyclists, parked vehicles, buses, turning movements and frequent lane changes. These conditions can fall outside the system’s reliable operating envelope. Approach junctions, crossings and roundabouts prepared to steer and brake manually; cancel assistance whenever the lane path or right-of-way is ambiguous.
Rain, fog, snow and low sun
Water spray, fog, snow, ice, glare and a dirty windscreen can reduce what cameras and other vehicle sensors can perceive. If visibility or markings deteriorate, do not continue simply because the feature is available. Slow down, disengage and drive according to the conditions and local law.

Roadworks and temporary markings
Construction zones can contain conflicting old and new lines, narrow lanes, cones and abrupt shifts. Treat them as a prompt for manual control unless your exact manual explicitly permits the relevant assistance and you can supervise it safely.
Vulnerable road users
Pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, children and mobility-device users can be difficult to predict or may be partly hidden. Scan actively and leave yourself braking room. Neither ACC nor LCC transfers your duty to avoid a hazard.
What to do when the car behaves unexpectedly
- Take control first. Brake or steer as needed and cancel the assistance when the vehicle is stable.
- Create a safe situation. Pull over only where legal and safe; use hazard warning lights if appropriate to the situation.
- Record the circumstances. Note the displayed warning, active feature, software version, road layout, markings, traffic, weather and visibility.
- Check the exact manual. Look up the warning and the system’s stated limits for your model and market.
- Contact support if the problem persists. Use XPENG support or an authorised service channel, and provide the recorded details.
- Do not reproduce a dangerous event. A suspected fault should be diagnosed safely, not tested by deliberately recreating the incident in traffic.
If the windscreen or camera area is obstructed, clean it only when stopped safely. If the warning continues, treat the assistance as unavailable until the manual or service channel confirms otherwise.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Software updates can change behaviour
XPENG announced in 2025 that XOS 5.6 adjusted ACC to reduce unexpected deceleration and added Smart Camera Calibration to LCC. This is XPENG’s description of a dated software update, not an independent performance measurement. It also does not establish that every European vehicle, model or country has the update.
After an update, read the release information and the current manual for your car. Confirm which features are installed, whether activation or cancellation has changed, and whether any new calibration or setup step is required. Do not assume that behaviour learned on an earlier software version remains identical.

How European regulation fits in
UN Regulation No. 171 concerns driver-control assistance systems and the information manufacturers must provide. The EU-published text addresses material such as driver responsibilities, assistance capabilities and limits, operating modes and methods for overriding the system. That supports the need for clear, model-specific instructions.
The regulation does not make a particular XPENG feature hands-free, remove the driver’s responsibility or replace national traffic rules. European countries can differ in road law, signage and enforcement. Follow the rules where you are driving and the manual for the vehicle you are actually operating.
What independent testing can and cannot tell you
Euro NCAP described the tested G9 XPILOT ASSIST configuration as balancing vehicle assistance with driver engagement and gave its highway-assistance assessment an overall “Good” result. That result applies to the tested model and configuration; it is not a blanket rating for every XPENG, software version or European-market vehicle. A test result cannot override your manual’s restrictions or make an unsuitable road suitable.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Calling assistance autonomous driving. ACC and LCC support speed, distance or steering; they do not transfer responsibility.
- Following a control guide for another car. Model, market and software differences can change buttons, prerequisites and warnings.
- Watching the animation instead of the road. The display can show system state but cannot prove that every hazard has been detected.
- Assuming lane centering works without visible lines. The cited UK manual specifically describes clear lane lines on both sides and standard curvature.
- Continuing through deteriorating conditions. Rain, fog, glare, snow, dirty glass, roadworks and unusual layouts are reasons to reassess or disengage.
- Testing a suspected fault in traffic. Take control, stop safely and seek support instead.
- Assuming an update is universal. The XOS 5.6 announcement is dated and does not prove availability on every vehicle.
Five-minute pre-drive checklist
- Correct model, market manual and software version identified.
- Activation, status indication, cancellation and override understood.
- Seat, mirrors and steering position adjusted.
- Windscreen and visible camera areas clean and unobstructed.
- Road markings, weather, visibility and traffic suitable for the selected function.
- Hands, attention and braking readiness maintained throughout.
- Manual driving planned for junctions, roadworks, unclear markings and changing conditions.
Bottom line for XPENG drivers
ACC can assist with speed and following distance, while LCC can assist steering within a readable lane, but both remain supervised aids. Start with the manual for your exact XPENG, use the systems only inside their stated limits, keep watching the road and take over early whenever conditions or behaviour are uncertain. Manual driving is the safe fallback whenever you cannot confidently monitor and control the car.
