The quickest way to answer a Mercedes S-Class operating question is to open the Digital Owner’s Manual in MBUX, search for a plain-language keyword, and then use the relevant Quick start, Tips, Animations, or Messages entry. Some driver-display messages include brief information or a route to a more detailed explanation. When a message appears, select its information or help option if one is offered. This is useful when you know the warning you saw but do not know the name of the affected system. The full manual remains the place for operating instructions and safety context.

Open it with MBUX Voice Assistant
With the vehicle’s voice assistant available, say “Show me the Owner’s Manual.” The W223 manual gives that sentence as an example. Voice commands and their results depend on the car’s equipment and enabled services; if you are unsure which commands your S-Class accepts, ask, “Hey Mercedes, what can you do?”
Use global search from the home screen
The W223 instructions list global search from the MBUX home screen as another route into manual content. Search is helpful when you remember a symptom or function—such as a seat setting, a warning, or a climate function—but not the control’s formal name. If global search returns several categories, choose the Owner’s Manual result rather than a media, navigation, or vehicle-settings result.
Access it from the rear compartment
Mercedes-Benz’s Guides FAQ says the in-vehicle Digital Owner’s Manual can also be accessed from the rear compartment. Rear-seat displays and controls vary by specification, so the available entry point may not look identical to the front MBUX screen.
Search the manual when you do not know the control’s name
A keyword search usually beats browsing every chapter. Use the most concrete word you know, then refine the query if the result list is broad.
Search by object
Try the physical or on-screen object first: “steering wheel,” “seat,” “roof,” “climate,” “mirror,” “charging,” or “display.” If you get too many results, add the action, such as “adjust steering wheel” or “rear climate.”
Search by action
Use verbs when you know what you want to do: “fold,” “save,” “activate,” “reset,” “open,” or “switch off.” A function can be described under an action rather than the label printed beside its control.

Search by warning or message text
Enter a distinctive phrase from the driver display. Even a short, unusual part of the message can lead to the explanation in Messages. Keep the wording exact where possible; replacing a technical term with a general synonym may produce fewer useful results.

- Quick start: introductory procedures, including initial actions such as adjusting the driver’s seat.
- Tips: practical guidance for common situations when you know the task but not the menu path.
- Animations: demonstrations that show a control or procedure visually.
- Messages: explanations of driver-display messages and their significance.
- Contents: a conventional chapter-style route when search terms are uncertain.
Use the language selector if the manual is not displayed in the language you need. Back navigation returns you to the preceding result or section, which is useful when you follow a link from a warning message and then want to return to your search.
What “Hey Mercedes” can and cannot do
Voice interaction provides another way into MBUX functions. Depending on equipment, the available functions can include telephone, messages and email, navigation, radio and other media, vehicle functions, and online functions. Full voice-control functionality requires activation of online voice control, and the available command set is not identical in every S-Class.
Check supported commands first
Say “Hey Mercedes, what can you do?” to have the assistant identify supported capabilities in that car. If the assistant does not recognize “Show me the Owner’s Manual,” use the in-car manual entry or home-screen search instead. A missing voice result does not mean the manual is absent; it may indicate a different software version, equipment level, language, or online-service status.
Phrase requests around the outcome
For an operating question, state the desired result rather than guessing a button name. “Show me the Owner’s Manual” is the documented example. For another function, describe the task in ordinary language, then confirm the result on the screen before changing a setting.
Do not use voice as a reason to handle the screen while moving
Voice control can reduce the need to touch the display, but it does not remove the distraction risk. Pull over before reading a long procedure, watching an animation, or changing a setting that requires visual confirmation.

Understand the S-Class control types
The 2022 W223 manual identifies touch-sensitive surfaces in several areas, not only the central display. Depending on the control, a press or swipe changes a setting or triggers a function.
Roof and door control panels
Roof and door panels can use touch-sensitive surfaces for vehicle functions. A light press may activate an item, while a swipe may change a value or move through choices. Do not assume that a symbol’s behavior is identical to a mechanical switch in another model; check the matching manual entry or animation.
Climate controls
Climate operation can include touch-sensitive controls. Use the manual’s climate section when you need to distinguish a tap that changes a temperature from a gesture that changes airflow or another setting. If the panel does not respond, first check that your finger and the surface are clean and dry.

Steering-wheel controls
The steering wheel includes touch-sensitive areas as well as other control types, depending on specification. A swipe can move through a menu or adjust a value; a press can select an item. Because the wheel is close to your hands and sightline, it is especially important to learn the gesture while stationary before attempting to use it in traffic.
MBUX touchscreen
The central MBUX touchscreen supports presses and list navigation. The system can provide haptic feedback—a pulse or vibration—when you press a control or move through a list. Haptic feedback confirms that an input was registered; it does not guarantee that the requested vehicle function completed, so check the on-screen state when safe.
Keep touch surfaces usable
Mercedes-Benz cautions that touch-sensitive controls can be affected by contamination or obstructions. Keep surfaces clean and dry, and do not place stickers over them. Moisture, residue, gloves that do not register reliably, or an adhesive label can make a swipe appear to fail or trigger the wrong response. Clean the surface according to the vehicle-care instructions rather than applying an unapproved liquid directly to a control.

Why your screen or button may differ from the manual
Mercedes-Benz explicitly qualifies its equipment descriptions: features can vary with model, order, national version, and availability. The W223 Saloon manual dated August 2022 is an English-market reference, not a promise that every S-Class has the same control, menu, or voice command.

Model and body-style differences
An S-Class Saloon and another body style may use different trim, rear-compartment equipment, or control layouts. A manual for a different body style can show a control you do not have.
Order and equipment differences
Optional equipment can add or remove controls and menu entries. A feature described in a chapter may only appear when the associated hardware or service is fitted. If the manual mentions a function but no corresponding control exists, check the vehicle’s equipment documentation before assuming a fault.
Country and language differences
National versions can change available services, legal messages, languages, and online functions. An English-market screen sequence may therefore differ from the sequence in another country.
Software-version differences
Menus can change after software updates. Mercedes-Benz’s November 16, 2021 S-Class announcement described MBUX “Zero-Layer” as presenting key applications contextually at the top level and offering personalized suggestions for infotainment, comfort, and vehicle functions. That is historical product information, not a guarantee that every current S-Class screen still looks the same or shows the same suggestions.

Do not try to browse the full Digital Owner’s Manual while driving. The W223 manual says the manual is deactivated while the vehicle is moving and warns that operating integrated information and communications systems can distract the driver and cause loss of control. Its safety wording states: “If you operate information systems and communications equipment integrated in the vehicle when driving, you could be distracted from the traffic situation.”

Before you search
- Park in a safe, legal location.
- Engage the vehicle’s required parking brake or park mode.
- Read the procedure and any warnings before touching the control.
- If another person is available, let that person search while you remain focused on driving only when local law and the vehicle’s instructions permit it.
If a message appears on the road
Follow the vehicle’s immediate warning instructions and stop safely as soon as conditions allow. A brief driver-display explanation may be available, but do not attempt to read a long manual entry in moving traffic. Availability of the app, individual features, and local content can vary, so check what is offered in your market.

What to do when a control is missing or unresponsive
The manual shows a control that is not in your car
- Check the manual’s model, body-style, market, and date context.
- Look in the vehicle’s equipment documents for the relevant option.
- Search the in-car manual for the function name; an unavailable feature may have no active menu entry.
- Ask a Mercedes-Benz service centre if the equipment list and screen still disagree.
A touch surface does not react
- Stop safely before troubleshooting.
