The Jeep Renegade’s Selec-Terrain system chooses different throttle, transmission, traction-control and all-wheel-drive strategies for changing surfaces. Leave the selector in AUTO for ordinary mixed driving, choose Snow for snow or ice, Sand for loose sand, and Mud for mud or wet grass. Rock is reserved for Trailhawk models in 4WD LOW. Use the 4WD LOW button only for slow, difficult off-road obstacles, and follow the Renegade owner’s-manual procedure rather than a generic Jeep transfer-case procedure.
What Selec-Terrain changes
Selec-Terrain coordinates the Renegade’s vehicle-control systems with driver input so the powertrain responds appropriately to the surface under the tires. Depending on the selected setting, the system can alter torque distribution, throttle response, traction-control intervention and transmission shift strategy. The goal is not to make the vehicle invincible; it is to reduce wheel slip and help the driver maintain momentum at a suitable speed.

Equipment differs by model year, drivetrain, trim and market. The instructions below apply to a Renegade equipped with the Selec-Terrain controls described in the owner’s manual, especially four-wheel-drive versions. A front-wheel-drive Renegade will not have the same 4WD LOCK or 4WD LOW functions. Confirm the symbols and instructions in the manual for your vehicle before trying an off-road setting.
Selec-Terrain modes at a glance
| Mode | Best surface or situation | Where it can be used | Wheel slip and transmission behavior | 4WD requirement and availability |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AUTO | Routine driving, changing conditions and general light off-road travel | On road and off road | Fully automatic torque management; the transmission and traction systems choose the response. The system may disconnect the driveshaft when conditions permit to reduce fuel consumption. | Default automatic operation on equipped 4×4 models |
| SNOW | Snow, ice and other poor-traction weather surfaces | Roads or tracks covered by snow or ice | Reduces wheel slip; under qualifying conditions the transmission may launch in second gear. That second-gear launch does not apply in 4WD LOW. | Selecting the mode also enables 4WD LOCK; available on Selec-Terrain-equipped models |
| SAND | Loose sand and similarly soft, low-grip terrain | Off-road or unpaved loose surfaces | Allows more wheel spin and holds higher shift points so the vehicle can keep moving through loose material. | Selecting the mode also enables 4WD LOCK |
| MUD | Mud, wet grass and comparable slippery off-road surfaces | Off-road use | Calibrates the powertrain and traction systems for controlled slip and forward motion in mud. | Selecting the mode also enables 4WD LOCK |
| ROCK | Large rocks, deep ruts and other very slow, technical obstacles | Off-road only | Maximum-performance off-road calibration in the Renegade manual, with the low-speed control needed for obstacles. | Trailhawk only and available only when 4WD LOW is engaged |
Using AUTO for normal driving
AUTO is the Renegade’s default, fully automatic setting. It continuously balances traction, maneuverability and acceleration without requiring you to predict which axle will need power. It is appropriate for dry pavement, wet roads, gravel and routine mixed driving, and it remains usable off road when no specialized surface calibration is needed.

In AUTO, the system can disconnect the driveshaft when conditions allow. That reduces mechanical drag and can help fuel economy, then reconnects the driveline when the control system detects a need for additional traction. You do not need to operate a separate button for this transition.
Use AUTO when conditions are changing rapidly, such as a route that alternates between clear pavement and short patches of gravel. If the road becomes consistently snow-covered, sandy or muddy, select the corresponding mode before traction is lost rather than waiting for the wheels to spin.
When to select Snow
Snow is intended for snow, ice and other poor-traction surfaces where a gentle launch is more useful than immediate torque. The transmission may start in second gear under qualifying conditions to reduce the chance of spinning the driven tires. This second-gear launch is not used while 4WD LOW is engaged.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchChoose Snow when the surface, not merely the weather forecast, is slippery. On a wet but clear road, AUTO is normally sufficient. Once you return to bare, dry pavement, go back to AUTO so the vehicle is no longer using a snow-specific calibration.
- Reduce speed before corners, hills and intersections; the mode cannot create grip that the tires do not have.
- Leave extra stopping distance because braking performance still depends on the tires and surface.
- Use smooth steering and throttle inputs even though Snow is designed to reduce wheel slip.
When to select Sand
Sand is for loose sand and comparable soft surfaces where maintaining momentum is critical. Its calibration permits more wheel spin and higher transmission shift points than Snow. That extra spin can keep the tread moving across loose material instead of letting the vehicle bog down when the tires immediately dig in.
Enter soft sand with the appropriate momentum and avoid abrupt stops. Select Sand before the vehicle is stuck; changing modes after the tires have dug holes may not restore forward motion. Steering should be gradual, and you should avoid repeated high-speed attempts that overheat the tires or driveline.

When to select Mud
Mud is designed for mud, wet grass and similar slippery off-road terrain. Compared with AUTO, it permits the controlled wheel slip needed to clear the tread and maintain progress rather than intervening immediately at the first difference in wheel speed.
Use Mud on a defined muddy or waterlogged section, not as a general setting for a wet paved road. Keep a steady, moderate throttle and avoid spinning the tires needlessly: uncontrolled wheel spin can deepen ruts, damage the surface and leave the vehicle immobilized. Mud also partially disables active-safety systems on the 2017 Renegade. Watch the path yourself and return to AUTO when the difficult section ends.
When Rock is appropriate
Rock is the most specialized Renegade setting. It is available only on the Trailhawk trim and only after 4WD LOW is engaged. The mode is intended for very slow obstacles such as large rocks, ledges and deep ruts where precise tire placement and low-speed torque matter more than normal-road acceleration.
Do not select Rock merely because a trail is unpaved. It is not a substitute for ground clearance, suitable tires, a spotter or careful line choice. Approach obstacles slowly, keep both hands available for steering, and stop if a tire is about to climb an unstable edge. Once the technical section is complete, leave 4WD LOW and return to AUTO or another suitable setting before driving at normal speeds.

Pressing the 4WD LOCK control engages the locked power-transfer-unit state. Rotating the Selec-Terrain selector from AUTO to Snow, Sand, Mud or another off-road mode also enables 4WD LOCK. Locking the system requests a more persistent four-wheel-drive connection when extra traction is needed; it does not lock the individual left and right differentials.

Use LOCK before entering a slippery section, such as a snow-covered incline, loose approach or muddy track. It is useful when you expect both axles to need power continuously. When the surface becomes firm and traction is no longer a concern, select AUTO again so the system can resume its automatic strategy.
A locked four-wheel-drive setting is not intended for prolonged use on dry, high-grip pavement. Jeep warns that driving 4H/4L-type systems on hard surfaces can cause tire wear and driveline stress. If the Renegade feels as though it is binding during a tight turn on a high-grip surface, stop using the locked or low-range setting and follow the manual’s instructions.
How to engage 4WD LOW on a Trailhawk
4WD LOW multiplies torque for very slow travel and gives the Trailhawk the operating range required for Rock mode. The Renegade owner’s manual specifies a stationary procedure with the transmission in Neutral:
- Bring the vehicle to a complete stop in a safe, level location before the obstacle.
- Keep the ignition in RUN or leave the engine running.
- Firmly apply the brake and shift the transmission to NEUTRAL.
- Press the 4WD LOW button once.
- Wait for the instrument cluster to display the 4WD LOW confirmation before selecting Drive or Reverse.
- After confirmation, select the required gear and proceed slowly. Select Rock only if the vehicle is a Trailhawk and the technical terrain warrants it.
If the confirmation does not appear, keep the transmission in Neutral, maintain the brake application and consult the model-specific manual. Do not force the selector, repeatedly press the button or continue into the obstacle without confirmation.
How to disengage 4WD LOW
- Stop the Renegade completely after leaving the technical obstacle.
- Apply the brake and shift the transmission to NEUTRAL.
- Press the 4WD LOW button again.
- Wait for the instrument cluster to show that 4WD LOW has disengaged.
- Shift into Drive or Reverse only after the change is confirmed, then return the Selec-Terrain selector to AUTO unless another setting is clearly required.
Jeep’s general four-wheel-drive guidance for some other systems describes engaging or disengaging low range while rolling at roughly 2–3 mph or less in Neutral, with a 25 mph maximum in low range. The Renegade owner’s manual’s stationary-Neutral button procedure controls for this vehicle. Do not transfer a procedure from another Jeep model to your Renegade; systems differ.
Speed and surface rules for low range
4WD LOW is for extreme, low-speed off-road situations, not ordinary hard-surface driving. Keep speeds within the limit specified by Jeep’s guidance—25 mph maximum—and use it for controlled crawling rather than faster travel. Low range increases torque at the wheels; it does not improve braking grip, cornering grip or the strength of a weak surface.

Never use low range to compensate for excessive speed, worn tires or poor judgment. If the route opens into normal gravel or pavement, disengage low range using the Neutral procedure before continuing at ordinary road speed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteActive-safety changes in off-road settings
The 2017 Renegade owner’s manual states that Sand and Mud partially disable active-safety systems, while 4WD LOW completely bypasses them to maximize off-road performance. The exact warning lamps and system behavior can vary by model year and equipment, but the driving responsibility is the same: monitor the terrain, obstacles, pedestrians and other vehicles yourself.
Reactivate the vehicle’s normal safety systems when the terrain no longer requires the altered setting. A mode selection does not excuse seat-belt use, safe following distance or controlled speed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prepare the Renegade before leaving the road
Traction modes work only when the vehicle is mechanically ready and the route is within its capability. Jeep recommends completing these checks before an off-road trip:
- Tires: Inspect tread, sidewalls and the spare. Set pressures to the specification for your load and route; do not guess at a lower pressure without understanding the risk of bead unseating and sidewall damage.
- Fluids and hoses: Look for leaks or damaged hoses and confirm that engine, transmission, coolant and other required fluid levels are correct.
- Fuel or battery charge: Start with enough fuel or charge for the planned route, detours and a return trip.
- Recovery equipment: Carry equipment appropriate to the Renegade’s rated recovery points, plus water, first-aid supplies and a way to communicate.
- Route and weather: Check closures, changing weather and local rules. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to return.
Engage four-wheel drive before traction is lost. Selecting a mode while the vehicle is already deeply stuck may leave no room to build momentum safely.
Troubleshooting common situations
The 4WD LOW light will not confirm
Stop, keep the transmission in Neutral and verify that the ignition is in RUN or the engine is running. Press the button once and wait. If the indicator still does not confirm, do not drive into a technical section; inspect the owner’s manual for warning messages and arrange service if the system remains unavailable.

The vehicle feels tight or hops on a dry turn
This can occur when a locked or low-range setting is used on a high-grip surface. Stop when safe, return to Neutral and disengage 4WD LOW if it is active, then select AUTO. Continued binding, warning lights or unusual noise warrants professional inspection.
The tires spin in Snow
Snow mode reduces slip but cannot overcome polished ice, unsuitable tires or excessive throttle. Ease off the accelerator, straighten the steering, and reassess the route. If you need to stop, avoid digging deeper holes with repeated attempts.
The Renegade is stuck in sand or mud
Stop spinning the tires. Confirm that the selected mode matches the surface, clear material from in front of the tires, and use the appropriate recovery equipment or assistance. Repeated high-speed wheel spin can bury the vehicle and damage tires or driveline components.
Choosing a mode on a typical trip
Snow-covered public road
Remain in AUTO when the road is mostly clear. Select Snow before a sustained snow- or ice-covered section, use gentle inputs and return to AUTO after the pavement is clear.
Gravel road with a short muddy crossing
Use AUTO on the gravel, select Mud before the crossing, maintain steady momentum, and switch back to AUTO once all four tires are on firm ground.
Beach access or dry dunes
Select Sand before entering loose material, keep a controlled momentum and avoid unnecessary stops. Leave Sand when you return to firm ground.
Rocky Trailhawk trail
Stop before the obstacle, engage 4WD LOW in Neutral, wait for confirmation, then select Rock and crawl over the obstacle. Disengage low range in Neutral immediately after the technical section.

Model-year and trim checks
Renegade controls and available modes are not identical in every country or model year. Rock is specifically a Trailhawk-only function in the cited Renegade manual, while a front-wheel-drive model may not provide any 4WD controls. Button locations, indicator wording and active-safety behavior can also change with equipment updates.
Use the owner’s manual supplied with your vehicle as the final authority. If its instructions differ from a generic Jeep explanation of 4H or 4L, follow the Renegade-specific instructions, especially for engaging and disengaging low range.
Quick Recap
Key operating principles
- Use AUTO as the everyday setting and whenever conditions are mixed or uncertain.
- Choose Snow for snow and ice, Sand for loose sand, and Mud for muddy or wet-grass surfaces.
- Remember that Rock is Trailhawk-only and requires 4WD LOW.
- Engage 4WD LOCK before a slippery section, not after the vehicle has lost momentum.
- Use 4WD LOW only for slow, extreme off-road work and observe the 25 mph maximum guidance.
- Expect altered or bypassed active-safety functions in Sand, Mud and 4WD LOW, and drive accordingly.
- Inspect the vehicle, carry recovery supplies and confirm your exact manual before setting out.
