Most controls are on the overhead panel, but the exact button sequence, prerequisites and warnings depend on your model year, trim and market. Identify the equipment fitted to your vehicle, then use the matching owner’s handbook before operating it on a trail.
Start with the overhead control panel
The overhead panel is the Grenadier’s main off-road switchgear location. INEOS places the switches for Off-Road Mode, Wading Mode and Downhill Assist there, along with the controls for optional front and rear axle differential locks. The physical layout can therefore tell you which functions are fitted, but the presence or absence of a switch is not enough to establish every operating condition.

Before leaving the road, sit in the vehicle and identify the symbols on your own panel. Do not assume that another Grenadier, even one with the same body style, has the same switches. Axle locks are equipment-dependent, and packages vary by variant, market and build. The official documentation lists a MY24 Owner’s Handbook and model-specific support pages; use the edition that matches the vehicle identification information in your Grenadier. That handbook is the authority for the exact activation sequence, required gear or speed, warning messages and disengagement instructions.

Off-Road Mode: a distraction setting, not a terrain program
Off-Road Mode is best understood as a distraction-reduction setting. INEOS says it disables three functions: the parking sensors, seatbelt reminders and engine start/stop. The documented purpose is to prevent those alerts or automatic engine cycling from competing with the driver’s attention while manoeuvring off-road.

What the mode does
- Parking-sensor alerts are disabled while the mode is active.
- Seatbelt reminders are disabled.
- The automatic engine start/stop function is disabled.
Those are the manufacturer-described effects. The available INEOS feature information does not establish that Off-Road Mode selects a mud, sand or rock program, changes throttle response, alters traction control, chooses gears or locks a differential. Treating the button as a selectable terrain map can lead to the wrong expectation about what the vehicle is doing.
When to consider it
Use it when the alerting and start/stop functions would distract you during slow, technical manoeuvring, provided the conditions and warnings in your handbook permit it. Because the mode removes reminders, the driver must remain responsible for occupant restraint and clearance around the vehicle. Parking sensors being silent does not make an obstacle less dangerous; use direct observation and a spotter where appropriate.
How to operate it safely
- With the vehicle stationary in a safe place, locate the Off-Road switch on the overhead panel.
- Read the corresponding model-year handbook entry for the ignition state, gear selection and confirmation indicator required by your vehicle.
- Activate it using that documented sequence and confirm the dashboard or panel indication.
- Drive using visual checks rather than relying on disabled parking alerts.
- Cancel the mode using the handbook procedure when you return to normal-road conditions or no longer need the distraction reduction.
The sequence above deliberately does not substitute a button-by-button instruction: the supplied official manual file was not available for verification, and a sequence that is correct for one build may be wrong for another.

Wading Mode: what it changes and what it cannot guarantee
Wading Mode monitors engine temperature and disables the engine fan when it is safe to do so, according to INEOS. The fan-management function is intended to reduce the risk of the fan disturbing water while the vehicle is in a crossing; it is not a depth sensor or an automatic route-assessment system.
The published depth figure
INEOS lists an 800 mm maximum wading depth for the Grenadier Station Wagon, and the Quartermaster product information also lists 800 mm. This is a published vehicle specification, not a promise that every crossing at or below that depth is safe. Actual risk depends on water current, the shape and firmness of the bottom, entry and exit slopes, hidden holes, debris, vehicle load, tyre and wheel configuration, and the condition of the crossing at that moment.
Use the figure as a hard limit, not a target
- Measure or judge the crossing before entering; never infer depth from the visible surface alone.
- Account for moving water and an uneven bottom, which can make a nominally shallow crossing unsafe.
- Leave margin below the published limit for waves, wheel ruts and changing depth.
- Confirm that your particular vehicle, equipment and handbook information correspond to the specification being quoted.
The available feature pages do not provide a complete, model-specific water-crossing procedure. Do not improvise a speed, gear, entry angle, stopping rule or recovery method from the 800 mm number. Follow the matching handbook’s warnings and instructions, and abandon a crossing if the route cannot be assessed with confidence.

What to check before selecting it
- Stop in a place where the vehicle is stable and the controls can be operated without rushing.
- Identify Wading Mode on the overhead panel and check the handbook for the required vehicle state and confirmation indication.
- Activate it only when the crossing decision has already been made from a route and vehicle-safety assessment; the mode does not make an unsuitable crossing suitable.
- Monitor the vehicle and the route continuously. Engine-temperature monitoring does not replace observation of the water, traction or vehicle attitude.
- After leaving the water, follow the handbook’s instructions for cancelling the mode and checking the vehicle.
Permanent four-wheel drive, low range and the centre differential lock
The Grenadier uses permanent four-wheel drive and a manually operated two-speed transfer case. The transfer case contains a centre differential lock that INEOS says can be locked in both high and low range. Its published low-range ratio is 2.5:1.
What low range is for
Low range is mechanical reduction gearing. It multiplies driveline torque at the wheels and allows the vehicle to move more slowly for a given engine speed, which is useful when negotiating steep terrain, obstacles or controlled manoeuvres. The ratio is a specification, not a recommended trail speed or a guarantee of traction.
What the centre lock does
The centre differential is the coupling between the front and rear driveline paths. Locking it reduces the ability of the centre differential to allow different front-to-rear speeds, helping preserve drive to both axles when a difference in grip would otherwise cause unwanted spin. It does not lock the left and right wheels on either axle; those are separate axle-lock functions when fitted.
Changing range or locking the centre
Because the transfer case is manually operated, the exact shift sequence matters. The available official pages do not establish the required speed, transmission position, pedal use or confirmation steps for every model year. Use the transfer-case section of your own handbook rather than applying a generic 4WD procedure. If an indicator flashes, refuses to confirm or displays a warning, stop and consult the vehicle-specific instructions instead of forcing the lever or repeatedly cycling the control.
Front and rear axle differential locks
Front and rear axle locks are separate from the centre differential lock. INEOS describes them as electronically actuated options controlled independently from the overhead panel. The Station Wagon technical description states that Trialmaster fitment includes them as standard; other variants may require an option, and regional specifications can differ.

Confirm that your Grenadier has them
- Look for the individual front- and rear-lock switches on the overhead panel.
- Check the vehicle build specification or order documentation for the exact market and trim.
- Use the handbook’s equipment list and warning symbols to confirm the fitted system.
Do not infer the presence of both locks from the vehicle’s four-wheel-drive system or from the centre-lock control. A Grenadier can have permanent four-wheel drive and a lockable centre differential without having both axle locks fitted.

How the locks are described
Each axle lock can be toggled independently, according to INEOS. The system automatically disengages at higher speeds to protect the drivetrain. The pages reviewed do not state a universal engagement speed, a complete list of prerequisites or a full safe-use procedure, so those details must come from the handbook for your build.
Use an axle lock only when the terrain and the handbook call for it. A locked axle cannot accommodate the same left-to-right wheel-speed difference as an unlocked differential, which is why the automatic higher-speed release matters. If a lock will not engage, remains indicated after the terrain changes or produces a warning, follow the vehicle’s diagnostic and disengagement instructions rather than continuing at road speed.
Downhill Assist and Uphill Assist
Downhill Assist
Downhill Assist dynamically brakes individual wheels to improve control on extreme descents. Its wheel-by-wheel braking action is different from simply pressing the brake pedal once: the system continually manages braking at individual wheels as the vehicle travels downhill.
INEOS does not provide, in the reviewed feature material, a universal target speed or a complete activation sequence. Read the handbook entry before using it, especially for the required range, transmission state, maximum operating conditions and the meaning of any indicator. Do not treat the system as permission to approach a slope whose surface, drop-off or run-out you cannot assess.
Uphill Assist
Uphill Assist holds the vehicle in position after the driver releases the handbrake, supporting control on steeper terrain. It is a hill-start aid, not a substitute for selecting an appropriate route or controlling the vehicle with the service brake and accelerator.
Use the handbook to determine when it becomes active, how long it holds and how the driver is expected to move away. If the vehicle does not hold as expected, keep the service brake applied and reassess rather than relying on an unconfirmed system state.

Use the central display as an information aid
The central touchscreen can show vehicle attitude, steering angle, system temperatures and drivetrain utilisation. These readouts help explain what the vehicle is experiencing and can make it easier to spot an increasingly severe angle or a temperature trend while you concentrate on the route.
Attitude and steering angle
Attitude information can show how the vehicle is leaning or pitching; steering-angle information shows the direction of the front wheels. Both are useful references when the bonnet, terrain or bodywork makes the wheel position difficult to judge. They do not measure every obstacle and cannot see a hole, submerged rock or soft shoulder that is outside the sensors’ information.
Temperatures and drivetrain utilisation
System-temperature displays can reveal that a component is working hard or approaching a condition that requires attention. Drivetrain-utilisation information helps you understand how the vehicle is delivering drive. Treat these as monitoring tools: a normal-looking display does not override a warning, a manufacturer limit or an unsafe route.
Keep looking through the windscreen and use a spotter when visibility or consequences warrant it. The screen should support line choice and system awareness, never replace them.

- You need fewer alerts while manoeuvring: consider Off-Road Mode, remembering that it disables the documented reminders and sensors.
- You are evaluating a water crossing: use Wading Mode only after assessing the crossing and checking your handbook; the 800 mm figure does not assess current, bottom or exit conditions.
- You need controlled, low-speed torque: consult the handbook for low range and use the transfer case as specified.
- You need the front and rear driveline paths coupled: use the centre differential lock according to the transfer-case instructions.
- An axle is losing traction: determine whether the vehicle has the relevant optional axle lock, then follow its model-specific engagement rules.
- You are descending a severe slope: read and use Downhill Assist only within its documented conditions.
- You are starting on a steep incline: use Uphill Assist as a holding aid, while retaining control with the service brake and the route assessment.
- You need to understand what the vehicle is doing: open the central display’s attitude, steering, temperature and drivetrain views without allowing the screen to distract from the trail.
Common mistakes and safer corrections
Assuming Off-Road Mode is a mud, sand or rock map
Correction: limit your expectations to the documented disabling of parking sensors, seatbelt reminders and engine start/stop. Look to the transfer case, centre lock, axle locks and driving technique for the mechanical functions appropriate to the terrain.
Treating 800 mm as a safe crossing depth
Correction: regard it as a published maximum and evaluate current, bottom, entry, exit, load and configuration. Do not enter a crossing that cannot be assessed.
Confusing the centre lock with axle locks
Correction: the centre lock is part of the transfer case; front and rear axle locks are separate, equipment-dependent controls. Verify the switches and specification on your vehicle.
Using another model year’s button sequence
Correction: use the exact handbook edition for your Grenadier. The official documentation listing includes a MY24 handbook, while instructions and equipment can vary by build and market.
Reading the display instead of the terrain
Correction: use attitude, steering, temperature and drivetrain information as supporting evidence. Maintain direct visual assessment of the route and vehicle surroundings.
Handbook check before the first trail
Keep the vehicle-specific handbook accessible and locate these entries before you need them: overhead-panel controls, Off-Road Mode, Wading Mode, transfer case and gearbox, centre differential lock, front and rear axle locks if fitted, Downhill Assist, Uphill Assist, warning indicators and recovery or operating limits. Confirm the model year, market and equipment list, because a general Grenadier explanation cannot supply missing prerequisites for a particular build.
If a control does not respond as expected, an indicator does not confirm, or a warning appears, stop where safe and follow the handbook’s troubleshooting direction. Do not force a mechanical control, continue at higher speed with a lock engaged, or assume that a mode has activated without its confirmation indication.
