The Silverado Multi-Flex Tailgate is an available feature, not equipment on every truck. If your Silverado has it, the tailgate can be arranged for six jobs: normal bed access, holding long cargo at the primary-gate opening, reaching farther into the bed, stepping into the bed, retaining second-tier cargo, and providing a work surface. Chevrolet says the primary gate opens from the key fob, an interior switch, or a button on the gate. The inner-gate controls and safety limits vary by model year and series, so use the Owner’s Manual for your exact Silverado before opening the inner panel—especially when a hitch or other equipment is installed.
Identify the two parts before operating the tailgate
Multi-Flex has a conventional outer panel and a separately moving inner panel. Chevrolet’s descriptions use “primary gate” for the full-width outer tailgate and “inner gate” for the smaller panel built into it. The six functions are combinations of those two panels; they are not six separate accessories.

Primary gate
The primary gate is the ordinary tailgate you use to open the bed. It can be released with the key fob, a switch inside the truck, or a button on the gate, according to Chevrolet’s current Silverado 1500 product information. Once open, it provides the normal loading opening and is also the base for the primary-gate load-stop position.

The inner gate folds or opens into the other five arrangements. Its release method, power operation, interlocks, and whether an enable/disable setting is present depend on the Silverado’s year and series. Do not assume that a button sequence shown for a Silverado HD works on a Silverado 1500, or that a later truck uses the same controls as an earlier one.

Check that your Silverado is equipped
Chevrolet describes Multi-Flex as an available Silverado feature, and its HD product information also lists the feature as offered on Silverado HD. Availability does not mean every trim, cab, bed length, or package includes it. Confirm the equipment on the particular truck before trying to operate an inner gate.
- Check the original equipment list, window sticker, or build sheet for Multi-Flex Tailgate.
- Look for the split inner panel and the controls identified in your Owner’s Manual.
- Use the manual that matches the model year and series shown on the vehicle, rather than a generic Silverado guide.
- If the truck has a hitch, bed accessory, or other equipment near the tailgate, read the manual’s clearance and disable-feature instructions first.

Open the primary gate
These are the three release methods Chevrolet identifies for the primary gate. Your truck may use a power or manual movement for a particular method; the Owner’s Manual determines the exact behavior and any conditions that must be met.
Key fob
- Stand where you can see the entire tailgate and the area behind it.
- Use the tailgate control on the Silverado key fob as described in your manual.
- Watch the gate while it moves. Stop and clear the area if a person, object, trailer component, or cargo enters its path.
Interior switch
- With the vehicle stationary, locate the tailgate switch inside the cab using the manual’s interior-controls diagram.
- Operate the switch as directed for your model.
- Confirm that the gate has reached the intended position before loading or unloading.
Button on the gate
- Go to the gate only after checking that the rear area is clear.
- Press the exterior button identified in the manual.
- Keep hands away from hinges and moving joints, and do not stand in the gate’s travel path.
Those methods open the primary gate; they do not by themselves explain every inner-gate configuration. Inner-gate release buttons, latches, and power settings are model-specific.

1. Primary gate: ordinary tailgate access
Choose this position when you need the largest conventional opening for boxes, tools, luggage, or other bed-floor cargo. Release the primary gate by the key fob, interior switch, or gate button. Before placing weight on the open gate or loading, verify that it is fully in its intended position and that the load will not interfere with hinges or latches.
The ordinary position does not create a step, a second-tier barrier, or a workbench. If an item extends beyond the bed, use an appropriate cargo-securing method rather than relying on the gate’s position alone.

2. Primary-gate load stop: retain extra-long items
In this arrangement, the inner panel is lowered to create a stop at the end of the bed while the primary gate remains in its supporting position. It is intended to help keep extra-long boards, pipes, or similar items from sliding out of the bed.
Measure the load and check that it is supported by the bed and stop in a stable way. The stop only limits movement at one end; it does not restrain bouncing, side-to-side motion, or forward movement. Use straps or another tie-down system suitable for the cargo and follow the vehicle’s loading instructions.

Easy-access mode lowers the inner gate so you can reach cargo farther from the rear edge without climbing into the bed. It is useful when the item is within arm’s reach once the inner panel is out of the way but the primary gate would otherwise block access.
Remove or reposition anything that could catch on the inner panel. Operate the inner gate using the sequence in the matching Owner’s Manual, then check that the panel is latched or supported as specified before leaning or reaching against the bed area. Do not treat this position as a step unless the manual identifies the full-width step configuration.
4. Full-width step: enter the bed
For step mode, the inner gate folds down into a broad step that spans the available opening. Chevrolet states that the step can hold up to 375 lb on the current Silverado 1500 product page. That figure is Chevrolet’s stated maximum for the step; it is not a rating for the work surface, a load-stop position, or any other part of the tailgate.

Keep the step free of mud, ice, oil, loose tools, and other slipping hazards. Face the truck while stepping, maintain three points of contact where practical, and make sure the gate is fully deployed according to the manual. Never exceed the stated capacity, and do not use the step if the panel, hinges, or surrounding structure is damaged.
5. Inner-gate load stop: retain second-tier cargo
This position uses the inner gate as a raised barrier for items carried above the bed floor or in a second-tier loading area. It can help prevent those items from sliding toward the rear when the truck moves.
A load stop is not a substitute for tied-down cargo. The 2022 Silverado 2500 HD/3500 HD Owner’s Manual warns that cargo must be secured when the tailgate step is used as a load stop because cargo could shift. That warning is from that model-year HD manual; apply the instructions and limits in your own Silverado’s manual for the exact configuration.
6. Inner gate with work surface: write or load at bed height
Opening the inner gate into the work-surface position gives you a place for a laptop, blueprints, or similar paperwork. Chevrolet also describes this position as suitable for loading items into a second-tier area.
Keep the surface level and clear of objects that could fall into traffic or the bed. Chevrolet’s supplied product information does not state a weight rating for the work surface, so do not infer one from the 375-lb step rating. Avoid sitting, standing, or placing heavy equipment on it unless your vehicle’s manual specifically permits that use.

Follow the exact inner-gate procedure for your truck
Chevrolet’s product page explains what each position is for, but it does not publish one universal button sequence for every Silverado year and series. The inner panel may use a separate release, a power control, or a manual movement, and the order can differ.
- Identify the model year and series from the vehicle information label or registration.
- Open that vehicle’s Owner’s Manual and find the Multi-Flex Tailgate or tailgate section.
- Read the illustrations for opening, closing, and returning the inner gate to the normal position.
- Check any warnings about power movement, hinges, cargo, and clearance before operating.
- If a hitch, trailer equipment, bed extender, tonneau component, or other hardware is installed, follow the manual’s instructions for the inner-gate enable/disable feature, if equipped.
Do not force a panel that does not release. A latch that is blocked by cargo or hardware can be damaged if you apply leverage instead of correcting the obstruction.
Safety rules that apply while the gate moves
A power tailgate can move unexpectedly if a control is pressed from the key fob, cab, or gate. Chevrolet’s 2022 Silverado 2500 HD/3500 HD Owner’s Manual states: “Make sure there is no one in the way of the power tailgate as it is opening and closing, and keep hands away from the tailgate hinges when in use.” That statement is specific to that 2022 HD manual, but it illustrates the precautions to verify in the manual for your own truck.
- Inspect the complete movement path before pressing any control.
- Keep children, pets, and bystanders away from the rear of the truck.
- Keep fingers, clothing, straps, and tools away from hinges, latches, and pinch points.
- Do not operate an inner panel against a trailer hitch or accessory unless the manual says the configuration is permitted.
- Stop if the gate binds, makes an unusual noise, or does not reach its expected latch position.
- Secure cargo whenever a gate is being used as a stop; a stop alone cannot prevent all movement.
- Never stand on an inner gate or work surface unless the manual expressly identifies it as a step and you are within the 375-lb step limit.

Troubleshoot without forcing the mechanism
The primary gate does not open
Try only the release methods listed for your truck: key fob, interior switch, or gate button. Check that the vehicle is in the state required by the manual and that ice, cargo, or an obstruction is not holding the gate. If none of the approved controls works, stop rather than prying on the panel and arrange service.
The inner gate will not release
Recheck the manual’s inner-gate sequence and any enable/disable setting. Inspect the area for a hitch, accessory, strap, or cargo contacting the panel. Remove an obstruction only when it can be done safely and without placing hands near a pinch point.

The gate stops or reverses while moving
Clear people and objects from the travel path, then use the manual’s recovery procedure. Do not repeatedly cycle a gate that binds or produces unusual sounds; a dealer or qualified technician should inspect a persistent fault.
Cargo shifts in a load-stop position
Stop in a safe location, unload or reposition the items, and add proper tie-downs. Do not increase the height or length of a load merely because the inner gate is acting as a barrier.
The step feels unstable
Do not climb onto it. Return the gate to the safe position if the manual permits, inspect for damage or interference, and have the mechanism checked before further use.
A practical operating checklist
- Verify that the truck is equipped with Multi-Flex Tailgate.
- Confirm the exact Silverado model year and series.
- Read the tailgate section of the matching Owner’s Manual.
- Park securely and inspect the complete movement area.
- Choose the position that matches the task rather than using the step or work surface as a general platform.
- Use the approved control sequence and keep hands away from hinges.
- Check that the panel is fully deployed, latched, or supported before loading, stepping, or reaching.
- Secure every load, including cargo held against either load-stop position.
- Return the inner and primary gates to the manual’s travel position before driving.
What the six functions do—and what they do not do
Multi-Flex combines ordinary tailgate access with specialized ways to reach, climb, retain cargo, and work beside the bed. The full-width step has Chevrolet’s published 375-lb capacity, but that number must not be transferred to the work surface or either load-stop configuration. Because the controls and limitations are tied to the vehicle’s year and series, the correct way to use the feature is to identify the truck, follow its manual for every inner-gate movement, and secure cargo independently of the tailgate.
