FSD (Supervised) is not autonomous driving. It can steer, change lanes, follow a route, negotiate turns and intersections, and respond to traffic controls, but you remain responsible for the vehicle. Keep watching the road and surrounding traffic, and be ready to take over immediately. Tesla’s own warning says: “Always pay attention to the roadway and be prepared to take immediate action.” The driver—not the system—must decide whether it is safe to stop or continue through an intersection. (Tesla Model 3 Owner’s Manual)
Controls, availability and behavior vary with market, vehicle, model year, hardware, configuration and software. Use the owner’s manual shown in your car as the final authority; the Model 3 steps below are a US-market example, not a universal Tesla control guide.

What “Supervised” means
Full Self-Driving (Supervised), abbreviated FSD (Supervised), is an advanced driver-assistance system. Depending on the vehicle and software, it may perform tasks such as steering, lane changes, route following, turns, intersection movements and responses to traffic signals. Those capabilities do not transfer legal or practical responsibility from the driver to the car.
Recommended Free Tools
Tesla requires continuous driver attention. You must monitor vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, lane markings, traffic lights, signs and changing road conditions, then intervene whenever the system’s action is unsafe, uncertain or inappropriate. A clear visualization or a lack of warnings is not proof that the car has detected everything around it.

Tesla’s support page answers the literal question “Do I still need to pay attention while using FSD (Supervised)?” with the same essential rule: yes, you must remain attentive and ready to take over. Read the current guidance at Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) support page.
Confirm that your particular Tesla supports the feature
Do this before planning a trip around FSD (Supervised). Tesla says feature availability and operation can differ according to region, manufacture date, vehicle configuration, options, hardware and software. A function described for one model or software release may be absent or operate differently in another.
- Open the vehicle’s touchscreen and check its driver-assistance features. Look for the FSD (Supervised) option and any eligibility or availability message.
- Open the in-car owner’s manual. Use the manual for your exact vehicle and current software, including the correct activation and disengagement controls.
- Do not substitute another model’s instructions. Tesla’s Model S manual and Model 3 manual describe different vehicles; even a vehicle with the same name can have different controls after a hardware or software change. (Model S manual)
If the option is unavailable, do not attempt to work around the restriction. Drive manually or use only the assistance features your vehicle explicitly shows as available.

Inspect the cameras and their view
FSD depends on the vehicle’s cameras. The Model 3 manual says they must be unobstructed and calibrated. Dirt, damage, condensation, rain, faded lane markings and other conditions can reduce performance or make the feature unavailable.
- Check each camera area for dirt, ice, snow, water film, stickers or other obstruction.
- Remove anything that blocks a camera’s field of view.
- Do not use FSD (Supervised) with a rear-mounted bicycle rack, trailer or similar equipment if it blocks a camera, as Tesla specifically warns against that situation.
- If the car reports that a camera is unavailable or calibration is incomplete, follow the vehicle’s instructions and do not rely on the feature until the condition is resolved.
Tesla does not identify a particular cleaning product as required. The important condition is an unobstructed, usable camera view, not ownership of a specific accessory.
Check the road and weather
Before engaging, look beyond the dashboard display. Rain, snow, fog, direct sun and low light can degrade the system’s performance. Wet roads, poor visibility, worn lane markings, construction and unusual traffic patterns can make an otherwise eligible trip unsuitable for supervised assistance. (Tesla’s listed FSD limitations)

Prepare yourself
Sit in the driver’s seat, fasten the seat belt and remain physically and mentally ready to steer or brake. Store distractions, set navigation and adjust mirrors before activation. Do not begin supervising while looking at a phone, reaching for an object or doing another task.

The exact control differs by vehicle. In the reviewed US Model 3 manual, the setup path is an example:
- Park the vehicle.
- On the touchscreen, open Controls > Self-Driving > Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
- Read the information displayed by the vehicle and confirm that you understand the supervision requirement.
- When driving, use the activation control specified in your vehicle’s manual. Tesla’s support material states that activation is available below 85 mph, but the physical control and other conditions can differ by vehicle.
- Verify on the vehicle display that the assistance mode is active before relying on any of its steering or speed actions.
Do not treat the visualization as a complete account of what the system perceives. Continue scanning the real road, including areas the display does not show or may represent imperfectly.
Supervise continuously while it is active
Keep your attention on conflict points
Watch for vehicles entering from side streets, pedestrians stepping into crossings, cyclists, lane closures, emergency vehicles, changing traffic signals and drivers who do not follow the expected path. Pay particular attention at blind corners, crossings, narrow roads and complex intersections.
FSD can make an unexpected maneuver or mistake even when conditions appear normal. Maintain an escape margin: leave yourself room to brake or steer, avoid following too closely and keep both the time and physical ability to intervene.

Make the safety decision at intersections
Do not delegate the “go or stop” decision to the system. Tesla’s Model 3 warning places this responsibility on the driver: determine whether it is safe to stop or continue through the intersection, and be prepared to act immediately. A green signal, a route instruction or a system visualization does not eliminate the need to check cross traffic and pedestrians.

Override early, not after the situation has become critical
If you are uncertain about the car’s intended path, speed or lane choice, disengage before the maneuver develops. Waiting to see whether the vehicle corrects itself reduces your available stopping distance and options.
Situations that commonly require intervention
Tesla’s limitations guidance gives examples, not an exhaustive list. Treat the following as high-alert conditions and be prepared to take over immediately:
- Unprotected turns across fast-moving cross traffic.
- Multi-lane turns or turns where lane lines are unclear.
- Two lane changes occurring at the same time or a route that requires rapid repositioning.
- Narrow roads with oncoming vehicles, double-parked cars or little room to pass.
- High-speed merges, short acceleration lanes or traffic entering from a blind area.
- Road debris, temporary barriers, construction equipment or altered lane paths.
- High-curvature roads, tight bends or sections with limited sight distance.
- Rain, snow, fog, direct sunlight, low light or other visibility problems.
These examples describe when intervention may be needed; they do not define a safe-use boundary. If the road is outside your comfort margin, take control or drive without the feature.
How to take control
Learn the disengagement method for your exact vehicle before using the feature in traffic. Tesla’s support page identifies several possible methods, but not every Tesla has every control:
- Press the brake pedal.
- Use the gear stalk, if your vehicle is equipped with one.
- Use the right steering-wheel scroll wheel, if equipped and specified for your vehicle.
- Apply manual steering.
Consult the in-car manual for the precise sequence and the indication that FSD has disengaged. Practice identifying the controls in a safe, legal setting without creating a distraction. If the vehicle’s instructions differ from the list above, follow the vehicle’s instructions.
When taking over, look where you want the car to go, steer smoothly and brake as needed. Do not wait for an alert before acting; you can override at any time. (Tesla support)

Respond properly to attentiveness warnings
Tesla manuals describe escalating attentiveness warnings and possible suspension after misuse. Treat the first warning as a prompt to return your full attention to the road, not as an annoyance to dismiss. If warnings continue, disengage and drive manually until you can supervise properly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Do not hold a phone, watch a screen or perform another distracting task.
- Do not attempt to defeat driver-monitoring or occupancy checks.
- Do not assume that a warning-free trip proves the system is seeing every hazard.
- If a warning appears unexpectedly, check your seating position, belt and the vehicle’s instructions, then take control if attention cannot be maintained.
Repeated misuse can lead to loss of access according to the vehicle’s warnings and manual. The safe response is to stop using the feature, not to search for a way around the monitoring.
How FSD differs from Tesla’s other assistance modes
Names and controls are vehicle-specific, but Tesla’s manuals distinguish the operating scope of three commonly encountered modes. Traffic-Aware Cruise Control and Autosteer are described as intended for multi-lane roads with clear lane markings, while FSD (Supervised) is intended to operate across a wider set of road types. All still require an attentive, responsible driver.
| Mode | Operating scope described by Tesla | Driver’s continuing duty | What determines the actual controls |
|---|---|---|---|
| Traffic-Aware Cruise Control | Speed and following assistance; Tesla’s manual describes use on multi-lane roads with clear lane markings. | Monitor traffic and the roadway, and intervene whenever braking, steering or speed is not appropriate. | Your vehicle’s manual, hardware, software and market availability. |
| Autosteer | Steering assistance on eligible multi-lane roads with clear lane markings, as described in Tesla’s manual. | Keep hands and attention ready, watch for lane changes and hazards, and take over immediately when needed. | Vehicle-specific eligibility, controls and warnings. |
| FSD (Supervised) | May steer, change lanes, follow a route, negotiate turns and intersections, and respond to traffic controls across a wider range of road types. | Remain continuously attentive; decide whether intersections and maneuvers are safe; override early. | Exact functions and availability vary by vehicle, region, configuration, hardware and software. |
This is an operating-scope comparison, not a promise that any particular car has all three modes. Check the current manual for your vehicle. (Model S “About Self-Driving” manual)

A camera or system alert appears
Read the message, keep control and follow the vehicle’s instructions. A camera obstruction, calibration issue or other alert can reduce capability or make FSD unavailable. Do not continue treating the system as fully operational merely because some visualization remains on screen.
Common unsafe assumptions—and their corrections
| Unsafe assumption | Safer rule |
|---|---|
| “Supervised” means the car is responsible if something goes wrong. | You remain responsible and must be ready to take over immediately. |
| The display shows everything the car can see. | Use the display as an aid, never as a substitute for looking through the windshield and mirrors. |
| A green light means FSD will make the right intersection decision. | Check cross traffic, pedestrians and the complete intersection yourself. |
| If no warning sounds, it is safe to look away. | Maintain continuous attention; warnings are not a permission to disengage. |
| The same activation or disengagement control works in every Tesla. | Use the manual for that vehicle and learn its physical controls. |
| Clean cameras or favorable weather guarantee correct behavior. | They only remove some limitations; the system can still make mistakes in normal-looking conditions. |
What Tesla’s safety statistic does—and does not—show
Tesla’s support page reports “7x fewer major and minor collisions and 5x fewer off-highway collisions.” Tesla attributes the comparison to its Vehicle Safety Report. The reviewed support material does not provide the underlying methodology, so this is a Tesla-reported comparison, not an independently validated estimate that applies to every driver, trip, vehicle or road. Use it as company-reported context, not as a reason to reduce supervision. (Tesla FSD (Supervised) support page)
A practical go/no-go checklist
Before engaging FSD (Supervised), confirm every item below:
- Your vehicle’s touchscreen and owner’s manual show that the feature is available.
- You know the correct activation and disengagement controls for that vehicle.
- You are seated, belted, alert and free of distractions.
- Camera views are unobstructed and the vehicle reports no unresolved camera or calibration issue.
- Weather, lighting, lane markings and road layout give you a clear view and a usable escape margin.
- You are prepared to judge intersections and traffic gaps yourself.
- You will intervene at the first sign of uncertainty, not wait for the car to prove a maneuver is wrong.
If any answer is no, drive manually or use only the assistance mode that your vehicle and conditions support.
Keep the vehicle-specific manual current
Tesla’s online manuals and support information can change as software and hardware evolve. The US Model 3 manual used for the activation example and the Model S manuals linked in this guide are references, not substitutes for the manual displayed in your own car. Check that manual whenever the touchscreen labels, steering-wheel controls, warnings or available features change.
