How to Use Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) Safely

Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) still requires an attentive driver. This guide covers setup, supervision, takeover techniques, settings, limitations, warnings and Tesla’s safety-data caveats.

By CarCody Team

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is driver assistance, not autonomous driving. You remain responsible for the vehicle, must watch the road continuously, and must be ready to steer or brake immediately. Before using it, read the Owner’s Manual on your Tesla touchscreen for your exact model, hardware, software version, configuration, and market. Those details can change which controls appear and where the feature operates.

What Full Self-Driving (Supervised) actually does

Full Self-Driving (Supervised) can control functions such as steering, acceleration, braking and lane changes in supported situations, but it does not turn the car into an autonomous vehicle. The driver in the seat remains legally and practically responsible for monitoring traffic and controlling the vehicle. Tesla’s own support material and owner manuals repeatedly state that the system does not replace an attentive driver.

The safest mental model is an actively supervised driving aid. It may handle a routine stretch of road, then encounter a situation it cannot interpret reliably. You must notice the problem before it becomes urgent and take over smoothly. Do not plan activities that take your attention away from driving, even when the road appears simple.

Check compatibility before you try it

Use the manual for your own car

Open the vehicle’s touchscreen Owner’s Manual and the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) section before your first drive. Tesla says feature availability and behavior can vary by model, trim, hardware, software, configuration and region. A procedure shown for a Model 3 may not match a Model S, Model X, Model Y or another software release. The vehicle’s on-screen instructions are the controlling reference for your car.

Confirm the vehicle is in an eligible condition

Check for current warnings, blocked cameras, dirty glass around the cameras, or other conditions that could make the feature unavailable. Do not use Full Self-Driving (Supervised) with a trailer, bike rack or ball hitch attached to the rear, because Tesla specifically warns against that configuration.

Set up your supervision plan

Use the feature only when you can remain seated in the driver’s position, see the road and traffic clearly, and reach the steering wheel and pedals without delay. Adjust mirrors, seating and climate controls before engaging. Put away phones and other handheld devices; monitoring your screen or typing while the car moves is incompatible with continuous supervision.

How to turn on Full Self-Driving (Supervised)

The following sequence is the touchscreen path described by Tesla’s support material. Your vehicle may expose an additional steering-wheel control or a different confirmation step, so follow the prompts displayed in your car.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Park the vehicle. With the car safely stationary, open Controls > Self-Driving > Full Self-Driving (Supervised).
  2. Read and accept the user agreements. Review the on-screen conditions rather than treating the feature name as a promise of autonomous operation.
  3. Choose relevant driving settings. If your vehicle offers speed profiles or an HOV-lane preference, set them before moving. These settings influence behavior; they do not reduce your responsibility to supervise.
  4. Move to a suitable road. Start only where visibility, lane markings, traffic flow and road width give you time to evaluate the system. Avoid beginning in a construction zone, at a complicated intersection or in a place where an immediate maneuver is likely.
  5. Engage when you are ready. Select Start Self-Driving when the vehicle indicates that the conditions are suitable. Tesla’s support instructions describe Self-Driving appearing in blue with the driving path shown. Some vehicles allow engagement from a steering-wheel control or another model-specific command.
  6. Verify the status display. Do not assume activation because a control was pressed. Confirm the vehicle’s visual and audible indication that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is engaged, then look back to the road.

If the car will not engage, do not force the issue. Read the displayed reason, check the manual and address the condition only when parked. A camera, sensor, software or environmental limitation can make the system unavailable.

How to supervise while it is engaged

Keep your attention on the driving scene

Tesla’s Model 3 manual states: “You must remain attentive and be ready to take over at all times while Full Self-Driving (Supervised) is engaged.” That means actively scanning ahead, checking mirrors and monitoring vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, signals and signs rather than merely keeping a hand near the wheel.

Look through the next decision point, not just at the lane immediately in front of the bumper. Pay special attention to intersections, blind corners, merging traffic, lane closures, parked vehicles that could conceal a person, and narrow sections with oncoming vehicles. If you cannot explain what the car is about to do, prepare to disengage.

Respond to attentiveness prompts immediately

The cabin camera and other monitoring systems can issue escalating prompts when the vehicle detects insufficient attention. Respond promptly by returning your eyes and posture to the road and following the displayed instruction. Repeatedly ignoring prompts can cause Full Self-Driving (Supervised) to disengage or become unavailable for the rest of that drive.

Never hold a phone, read a device or use an accessory intended to defeat attentiveness or occupancy monitoring. Tesla says devices designed to circumvent those safeguards violate its terms and can result in permanent disabling of the feature and a ban on future use. Steering-wheel weights and similar products are not safe substitutes for supervision.

Keep control of speed and space

You remain responsible for vehicle speed, following distance and the decision to continue. A selected profile is only a behavior setting. Tesla’s support page lists profiles including Sloth, Chill, Standard, Hurry and Mad Max on the page reviewed; availability and naming can vary by vehicle or software. The profile can affect how quickly the car drives and how it approaches lane changes, but it is not a guarantee that a maneuver is safe.

Settings you may encounter

Setting or indication What it changes What it does not change
Speed profile Influences the vehicle’s driving pace and lane-change behavior; listed names include Sloth, Chill, Standard, Hurry and Mad Max on Tesla’s reviewed support page. It does not transfer responsibility, assure a safe speed or eliminate the need to intervene.
HOV-lane preference Expresses a preference about using high-occupancy-vehicle lanes where applicable. It does not override local rules, lane markings, occupancy requirements or your judgment.
Blue Self-Driving display and path Indicates that the feature is engaged according to the vehicle’s interface. It is not proof that every upcoming road situation is understood or safe.
Attentiveness warnings Prompt you to return attention to the road and may escalate after repeated inattention. They do not make it safe to look away or use a handheld device.

Read the exact descriptions and available options in your touchscreen manual. The same label can behave differently after a software update or on another vehicle.

When to take over

Intervene before the situation becomes critical

You can override Full Self-Driving (Supervised) at any time. Do not wait for a dramatic warning if the car’s intended path, speed or timing looks wrong. Early, deliberate intervention gives you more room and reduces the chance of an abrupt correction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Be particularly ready at:

  • Complex or unusually shaped intersections.
  • Blind corners and crests where approaching traffic is hidden.
  • Construction zones, temporary barriers and shifted lane markings.
  • Narrow roads with oncoming cars or limited escape space.
  • Crossings with pedestrians, cyclists, scooters or animals.
  • Areas with poor visibility, glare, heavy rain, fog, snow, dust or an obstructed camera view.
  • Any location where police, flaggers or temporary signs direct traffic differently from the normal road layout.

Ways to disengage

Tesla’s support material identifies pressing the brake and steering manually as disengagement methods. Other controls can be model-specific. If your vehicle provides a dedicated cancel command, learn it from the touchscreen manual while parked. Once you take over, keep steering and braking yourself until you have safely stopped or intentionally re-engaged under suitable conditions.

Practice in a controlled place

The owner manual recommends practicing disengagement in a safe environment without other road users. Choose a legal, low-risk location, understand what the display and steering feel like when the system releases control, and rehearse applying the brake and steering firmly but smoothly. Practice does not make public-road experimentation appropriate; it simply removes uncertainty about the basic takeover action.

Intersections and uncertain decisions

Never assume the vehicle will stop, proceed or choose a particular gap at an intersection. Tesla’s Model S manual warns drivers not to make assumptions about the system’s intersection decisions. Treat every signal, stop line, turn, crossing and priority movement as your responsibility to verify.

Check that traffic lights and signs are visible, that a green signal actually applies to your lane, and that no pedestrian or cyclist is entering the path. If a vehicle ahead is turning, stopped or obscured, cover the brake and be prepared to cancel. A route that is familiar to you can still change because of temporary signs, emergency responders or a blocked lane.

Visibility, cameras and unusual road conditions

Full Self-Driving (Supervised) relies on vehicle sensors and cameras whose performance can be affected by dirt, condensation, glare, darkness, weather, road spray, damage or an object blocking the camera view. Clean the relevant exterior areas as described in your vehicle manual and pay attention to warnings about limited visibility or unavailable features.

If the display reports a camera or system limitation, slow down as appropriate and take manual control. The manual notes that the system may become unavailable and require immediate steering control. Do not continue simply because the car was driving normally a moment earlier; conditions can change between one camera view and the next.

Manual driving versus supervised assistance

Decision point Driving manually Using Full Self-Driving (Supervised)
Who is responsible? The driver is responsible for every control and decision. The driver remains responsible for monitoring and immediate intervention while the system controls supported functions.
Road complexity You directly judge and execute maneuvers. You must judge whether the system’s interpretation and planned maneuver are acceptable, especially at intersections, construction and narrow roads.
Visibility You still need adequate visibility to drive safely. You need adequate visibility for yourself and for the vehicle’s cameras and sensors; limitations can make the feature unavailable.
Takeover speed No handoff is required because you are already controlling the car. You must recognize a problem and steer or brake immediately; delay increases risk.
Compatibility Normal controls remain available subject to the vehicle’s condition and local law. Availability and behavior depend on model, hardware, software, configuration and region.

Common unsafe assumptions and their corrections

“The name means it can drive without me.”

It cannot. “Supervised” is a critical part of the feature name. The driver must stay engaged for the entire time it is active.

“Keeping one hand on the wheel is enough.”

Hand position alone does not demonstrate attention. You must watch the road and be ready to control the vehicle. Do not use a weight or another device to imitate steering input.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“The car will always recognize a hazard.”

No assistance system should be treated as infallible. Watch for hazards yourself, particularly those hidden around corners, behind parked vehicles or inside work zones.

“A green light means the car can proceed.”

Verify the lane, crossing traffic, pedestrians, signs and temporary instructions. Intervene if the planned movement is unsafe or unclear.

“A familiar route is automatically suitable.”

Road layouts, weather, markings and traffic change. Evaluate the current conditions on every drive.

“A safety statistic proves the feature prevents crashes.”

It does not. Tesla reports that vehicles with Full Self-Driving (Supervised) engaged experience seven times fewer major and minor collisions and five times fewer off-highway collisions. The reviewed support page does not specify a year. These are Tesla’s company-published comparisons, not independent causal findings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to interpret Tesla’s collision figures

Tesla’s Vehicle Safety Report explains that its collision reporting does not assign fault because determining fault is subjective and complex, and that the report includes collisions regardless of contributing factors. It also describes the data sources used to estimate vehicle exposure and compares operating modes.

Those methodological details matter. A company-reported comparison can be affected by where, when and by whom vehicles are driven, not only by software behavior. Use the figures as Tesla’s reported observations, not as a promise that Full Self-Driving (Supervised) will prevent a collision or make an individual trip safer than attentive manual driving.

Regulatory context and current information

On November 5, 2024, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Office of Defects Investigation document PE24031 addressed whether Full Self-Driving detects and responds appropriately to reduced roadway visibility and requested information about related crashes and software updates. That document describes the scope of an investigation; it is not a final agency finding that the feature is safe or unsafe.

Because regulatory matters and software capabilities can change, check current notices from NHTSA and Tesla before relying on an older explanation of a warning, restriction or investigation status. Do not represent the 2024 document as a completed conclusion.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe-use checklist

  • Read the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) section of your vehicle’s touchscreen Owner’s Manual.
  • Confirm your model, hardware, software version, configuration and region support the feature.
  • Remove any trailer, bike rack or ball hitch from the rear before use.
  • Clean and inspect camera areas; resolve warnings before moving.
  • Set mirrors, seating, climate controls and navigation before engagement.
  • Put away handheld devices and never use an attentiveness-circumvention accessory.
  • Engage only when you can watch traffic continuously and reach the controls immediately.
  • Use a conservative speed profile when appropriate, while remembering that no profile guarantees a safe maneuver.
  • Scan intersections, blind corners, work zones, narrow roads, pedestrians and cyclists yourself.
  • Take over early whenever the path, speed or intention is uncertain.
  • If the system becomes unavailable, steer and brake manually without delay.
  • After any unexpected behavior, disengage, park safely and review the vehicle’s messages and manual before trying again.

What to do after an unexpected disengagement

  1. Stabilize the vehicle. Keep control, increase following distance and move to a safe legal stopping place when practical.
  2. Read the message. Note whether it refers to attentiveness, camera visibility, weather, a sensor condition, software or another limitation.
  3. Record useful details. If safe to do so after parking, note the time, road type, visibility and warning text. Do not handle a phone while driving.
  4. Check the manual for that exact warning. A model-specific instruction may require cleaning, a restart while parked or service.
  5. Do not repeatedly re-engage in the same conditions. If visibility, road layout or vehicle condition has not changed, continue manually and seek support through Tesla’s official channels.

The bottom line for every drive

Use Full Self-Driving (Supervised) only as an aid that you actively supervise. The decisive safety action is not selecting a profile or seeing a blue status display; it is maintaining attention, recognizing when the system is uncertain and taking control before the situation becomes dangerous. Your Tesla’s touchscreen manual remains the authority for the controls and limitations of your specific vehicle.
