Use Tesla Full Self-Driving (Supervised) as a driver-assistance system, not as an autonomous chauffeur. You must keep watching the road and surrounding traffic, remain able to steer or brake immediately, and take control whenever the car asks or its behavior is unsafe or unclear. Tesla says the feature does not make the vehicle autonomous or replace the driver. Exact availability, controls and limitations vary by vehicle, market, hardware and software, so use the in-vehicle Owner’s Manual for your Tesla alongside Tesla’s official FSD (Supervised) guidance.
What FSD (Supervised) does—and what it does not do
FSD (Supervised) can drive toward a destination, make lane changes and turns, and operate on a range of road types when the feature is available. Those capabilities do not transfer responsibility from you to the car. Tesla repeatedly describes the system as requiring a fully attentive driver. You remain responsible for deciding whether continuing, stopping, changing lanes or turning is safe.

- Keep your eyes and attention on the roadway, traffic, pedestrians and cyclists.
- Be ready to steer, brake or otherwise control the vehicle without delay.
- Treat the car’s visualization, prompts and warnings as assistance—not as a replacement for your own observation.
- Never assume that a warning-free drive means the system can handle an unexpected situation.
Tesla’s support page says its engagement condition is below 85 mph, but that number is not a promise that FSD is available or appropriate at every speed or location. Availability and operating limits can change with the vehicle, software, road and conditions.

Confirm that the feature is available
Open Controls > Self-Driving and review the current status. Follow the on-screen user agreements and prompts before attempting to start the system. If the menu, controls or wording in your Tesla differ, use the vehicle’s in-car manual; Tesla does not make one model’s exact control layout universal.

Check every camera view
Tesla says the cameras must be clean and unobstructed. Dirt, rain and other environmental effects can degrade performance, and an obstructed camera can make Self-Driving features unavailable. Inspect the camera covers before setting off, especially after washing the car, driving through mud or snow, or parking under trees.
If a camera cover needs attention, use only a method allowed by your vehicle’s Owner’s Manual. A soft microfiber cloth can be kept as an optional cleaning item, but Tesla does not endorse a particular cloth or claim that buying one improves FSD capability. Cleaning cannot compensate for poor visibility, damaged hardware or unsuitable road conditions.
Make the road and driver ready
- Seat yourself so you can apply steering force and reach the pedals immediately.
- Remove anything that blocks your view through the windshield, mirrors or side windows.
- Do not start with a phone, tablet or other handheld device in your hand.
- Choose a route and traffic situation in which you can concentrate continuously; do not use FSD as a way to manage a distraction.
How to start FSD (Supervised)
- Park safely and review status. In the touchscreen, go to Controls > Self-Driving. Read any availability notice or agreement and accept it only when you are prepared to supervise.
- Check the road yourself. Look for pedestrians, cyclists, stopped vehicles, lane closures, unusual signs and weather that could make automated driving inappropriate.
- Activate only when the system is available. Tesla’s current support instructions describe starting Self-Driving with the vehicle’s applicable control. Your model’s manual identifies the exact stalk, steering-wheel or other control.
- Keep both attention and control readiness. Once active, continue scanning beyond the vehicle directly ahead. Do not wait for the display to reveal a hazard.
- Cancel immediately if the situation is not clear. Use the vehicle-dependent disengagement method described below, then drive manually until conditions are suitable again.
Activation is not a handoff of responsibility. The system may plan a route or maneuver, but you must continuously decide whether that plan is safe and legal in the circumstances around you.

How to supervise while FSD is driving
Scan the real roadway, not just the visualization
Keep looking through the windshield and mirrors at lane lines, intersections and road users. The on-screen visualization is a representation generated by the vehicle; it is not a complete view of reality. Watch for a cyclist beside the car, a pedestrian emerging from behind a vehicle, a vehicle entering from a side street or a lane marking the system may not recognize.
Expect to intervene before a warning
A safe driver does not wait for an audible alert or the words “Take over immediately.” If the car begins drifting, approaches a hazard too quickly, selects an inappropriate lane or starts a maneuver you do not understand, take control yourself. Prompt intervention gives you more time and space than waiting for the system to reach its own threshold.

Keep your hands and attention available
Tesla’s Model 3 manual says the cabin camera monitors continued attentiveness during FSD (Supervised) and cannot be disabled. Looking away repeatedly can produce an on-screen warning. If the camera cannot clearly see the driver’s hand and arm locations, the display may ask for slight steering force. Repeatedly ignoring attention prompts can escalate warnings and disable Self-Driving for the rest of that drive.
Tesla specifically instructs drivers: “Do not use handheld devices while using Self-Driving features.” Put the device away before activation and leave it there until you are driving manually and can use it lawfully.

Take over as soon as you decide that the vehicle’s action is unsafe, inappropriate or uncertain. Tesla lists several disengagement methods, but the available controls depend on the vehicle configuration.
| Action | When to use it | Configuration note |
|---|---|---|
| Press the brake pedal | Use when you need to slow or stop immediately, or when you want a clear manual takeover. | Listed by Tesla as a disengagement method. |
| Take over steering manually | Use when you need to avoid an object, correct a path or resume full control. | Always be prepared to steer; the exact handoff behavior is vehicle-dependent. |
| Move the gear stalk upward | Use if your Tesla is equipped with the applicable stalk control. | Not every configuration has this control. |
| Press the right steering-wheel scroll wheel | Use if your Tesla provides this control for disengagement. | Controls differ by model and software. |
The Model S manual specifically lists braking, the right scroll control or manual steering. Because other Teslas may use different hardware, confirm your own procedure in the in-car manual and practice it while stationary or in a safe environment without other road users.
When a takeover message appears
If you see “Take over immediately,” hear the associated chime or receive an alert that FSD is unavailable or has disengaged, take control of steering immediately. Do not spend time diagnosing the cause while the vehicle is moving. Stabilize the car first, then pull over safely if you need to inspect a camera, weather condition or system message.

Intersections, traffic lights and lane markings require extra judgment
Tesla’s Model S Owner’s Manual warns: “NEVER make assumptions and predict when and where Full Self-Driving (Supervised) will stop or continue through an intersection or road marking. From a driver’s perspective, the behavior of Full Self-Driving (Supervised) may appear inconsistent.” The manual assigns the driver the decision about whether stopping or continuing is safe.
That warning matters at signalized junctions, stop signs, construction zones, faded markings and roads where another driver’s behavior changes quickly. Keep your foot and hands positioned to intervene, and be prepared to stop even if the vehicle appears to be proceeding normally.
- Do not assume the car will recognize every temporary or faded line.
- Do not predict that it will always stop, continue or resume in the same way at a particular intersection.
- Check cross traffic, turning pedestrians and cyclists yourself before allowing a movement to continue.
- If the planned path conflicts with what you can see, cancel the maneuver and drive manually.
The manual also says that, in rare cases, FSD may not appropriately slow, stop or resume for a stop sign or traffic light. A turn signal may not cancel a lane change or turn already in progress; steering or another vehicle control may be needed to cancel it.
How driving profiles change the vehicle’s behavior
Tesla’s support page names five profiles. They change pace, lane choice and lane-change frequency; none reduces the requirement for continuous supervision.
| Profile | Pace | Lane choice | Lane-change tendency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sloth | Slower than Chill | Not otherwise specified on the support page | Less frequent changes |
| Chill | Slower-oriented | Favors slower lanes | Minimal changes |
| Standard | Follows traffic flow | Not otherwise specified | Not otherwise specified |
| Hurry | Faster | Not otherwise specified | More frequent changes |
| Mad Max | Faster still | Not otherwise specified | More frequent changes |
Exact profile availability and descriptions can vary with software and configuration. Select a profile that leaves you comfortable monitoring every maneuver; choosing a slower profile does not make it safe to look away, and choosing a faster profile does not authorize you to accept an unsafe gap.

Conditions that can reduce performance or availability
Camera and weather problems
Rain, dirt and other conditions can interfere with camera perception. Faded lane markings are another example Tesla identifies. If the car reports a camera obstruction or the roadway is difficult for you to read, disengage and continue manually when safe.
Unclear road design
Construction, temporary signs, unusual intersections and conflicting markings can produce behavior you cannot confidently interpret. Your responsibility is to choose the safe action, not to let the system continue simply because it has not issued a warning.
Changing traffic around the car
A plan that was reasonable seconds ago can become wrong when a vehicle cuts in, a pedestrian steps out or a cyclist enters the lane. Keep monitoring the whole scene and be ready to override the plan before the car reaches the conflict.
What to do after an unexpected disengagement
- Take control first. Steer and brake as needed to keep the vehicle stable and within a safe path.
- Create space. If conditions allow, signal and move to a safe location away from active traffic.
- Read the message. Note whether the alert identifies camera visibility, an unavailable feature, an attention prompt or another condition.
- Inspect only when parked. Check camera covers and the surrounding environment without standing in a live lane.
- Decide whether to continue manually. Do not re-enable FSD until you can meet the attention and road-condition requirements.
If the vehicle repeatedly becomes unavailable or prompts for takeover in the same location, treat that as a reason to remain manual rather than repeatedly re-engaging while moving.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePractice the takeover before relying on the feature
Tesla’s Model S manual recommends practicing disengagement in a safe environment without other road users. The purpose is to make the response automatic, not to test the system’s limits.

Do not bypass attention monitoring
Do not cover the cabin camera, attach devices intended to simulate attention, hold the wheel in a way designed to defeat monitoring or use any other workaround. Tesla warns that devices designed to circumvent driver-attentiveness checks may violate the feature’s terms and can lead to permanent disablement and a ban on future use. The safe response to a prompt is to look back at the road, keep your hands ready and take over if you cannot supervise.
What Tesla’s collision statistic does—and does not—show
Tesla’s FSD (Supervised) support page attributes a Vehicle Safety Report comparison to Tesla: “7x fewer major and minor collisions and 5x fewer off-highway collisions.” The page does not provide the study methods alongside that claim. It should therefore be treated as Tesla’s stated comparison, not as an independently validated guarantee of an individual driver’s outcome. The statistic does not remove the attention, takeover or camera requirements described in Tesla’s manuals.
A practical pre-drive and in-drive checklist
Before activation
- FSD is shown as available in Controls > Self-Driving.
- You have accepted the applicable on-screen agreements.
- Camera covers are clean and unobstructed.
- You can see the road, mirrors and surrounding traffic clearly.
- Your phone and other handheld devices are put away.
- You know your vehicle’s exact brake, steering, stalk and scroll-wheel disengagement controls.
While active
- Keep continuous attention on the roadway and surrounding road users.
- Monitor intersections, markings, lane changes and turns yourself.
- Intervene before a warning if the path or speed is unsafe or unclear.
- Respond immediately to any takeover message, chime or disengagement alert.
- Remember that a profile setting changes behavior, not your responsibility.
After a problem
- Stabilize the vehicle manually.
- Pull over safely before inspecting messages or cameras.
- Continue manually if visibility, weather, markings or system availability remain questionable.
- Review the Owner’s Manual before trying the feature again.
Official instructions for your vehicle
Use Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) support page for the current general activation, profile and supervision guidance. Then read the manual for your exact model: the Model S Full Self-Driving (Supervised) manual covers camera checks, intersection limitations and takeover behavior, while the Model 3 manual explains cabin-camera attention monitoring and warning escalation. Controls and availability can differ by model, region, hardware and software, so the in-car manual remains the final reference for your vehicle.
The safe operating rule
Enable FSD only when you can supervise continuously. Watch the real road, keep your hands and feet ready, question every unexpected maneuver, and take over immediately whenever the car asks or your own judgment says the situation is unsafe. That is the difference between using FSD (Supervised) as intended and treating driver assistance as autonomy.
