To test it safely, open Settings > Vehicle > Driver Assistance, verify that the availability icon is present, meet the road and speed conditions, and keep your attention on the road with your hands ready to steer or brake. Pull the drive stalk toward you twice within one second to engage Highway Assist. The system can disengage without warning, so you must be able to take over immediately.
This procedure applies to the controls and warnings documented for current R1 vehicles, but the exact features you see depend on vehicle generation, software version, road markings, and region. Check the Rivian Owner’s Guide for your vehicle before every controlled evaluation.

What you are actually testing
Rivian uses several distinct assistance functions. They do not have the same sensors, road coverage, or driver-monitoring behavior, and a hands-free indicator does not turn any of them into an autonomous driving system.
Adaptive Cruise Control
Adaptive Cruise Control manages speed and following distance when conditions allow. It does not replace steering attention, visual scanning, or the need to brake yourself. Its controls are grouped with the other assistance features under Settings > Vehicle > Driver Assistance.

Highway Assist
Highway Assist can provide steering and speed assistance on eligible roads. The 2024.23 Owner’s Guide documents an activation range of 20–85 mph (32–136 km/h). It may refuse to engage, limit its behavior, or disengage when lane markings, weather, road geometry, sensors, or system conditions are unsuitable.
Lane Change on Command
Lane Change on Command is a separate function listed in the Driver Assistance controls. It should be treated as a requested maneuver performed by an assistance system, not as permission to stop checking mirrors, blind spots, traffic, or the destination lane.
Enhanced Highway Assist
Enhanced Highway Assist is a Gen 2 capability. Rivian says it uses an infrared camera embedded in the interior rearview mirror for driver-attention detection (Rivian software announcement). Attention monitoring does not mean the vehicle can handle every situation; you still need to watch the road and be prepared to take over.
Universal Hands-Free
Universal Hands-Free coverage and behavior vary with vehicle generation, software, road markings, and region. Rivian’s 2025 update describes expansion to more than 3.5 million miles of roads in the United States and Canada (Rivian software update). On Rivian’s Autonomy+ information page, Highway Assist with Co-steer is described as covering 150,000 miles of highways in the United States and Canada (Rivian Autonomy+). Those figures describe mapped or eligible-road coverage, not a guarantee that your vehicle will operate hands-free on every segment.
Rivian explicitly states that Universal Hands-Free will not stop or slow for traffic lights or stop signs. At every intersection, you remain responsible for recognizing the control, braking, and proceeding legally.
Find the driver-assistance settings
- Park safely or have a passenger navigate the screen while you remain focused on driving.
- On the center display, open Settings.
- Select Vehicle.
- Open Driver Assistance.
- Review the available controls for Adaptive Cruise Control, Highway Assist, and Lane Change on Command. Availability of additional controls depends on the vehicle and installed software.
Before changing a setting, read the on-screen description and confirm that it applies to the feature you intend to test. A setting change is not a substitute for checking the road, and some options may be unavailable while the vehicle is moving.

Prepare the vehicle and route before engaging
A controlled test should be deliberately boring: a divided or otherwise eligible road, clear lane markings, predictable traffic, good visibility, and no need to make urgent maneuvers. Do not begin by testing in construction, heavy rain, snow, sharp curves, or an unfamiliar interchange.

Pre-drive checklist
- Read the current Owner’s Guide for your exact R1 vehicle generation and software version. The R1S and R1T guides can differ, and software updates can change behavior.
- Clean the windshield and the areas around cameras and other sensors. Remove objects that could obstruct the interior attention camera or your view.
- Fasten your seat belt and set the seat, mirrors, and steering-wheel position before moving.
- Use a normal on-road drive mode. Do not attempt to engage Highway Assist in off-road mode.
- Do not test while towing a trailer. The documented Highway Assist conditions exclude trailer towing.
- Choose a road with visible lane lines and enough space to stop safely if assistance drops out.
- Check weather, glare, standing water, roadwork, temporary markings, and traffic density. Any of these can make the system behave differently from a clear-day demonstration.
- Keep your phone, camera, and other distractions put away. A passenger can record observations; the driver should not.
Confirm the vehicle is eligible
Look for the Highway Assist availability icon before pulling the stalk. If the icon is absent, crossed out, or accompanied by a warning, do not force engagement. Conditions can change after you start, so an icon is an invitation to check the requirements, not a promise that assistance will remain available.
How to engage Highway Assist
Use the following sequence on an eligible road while traveling within the documented 20–85 mph activation range.
- Center the vehicle in its lane and establish a steady speed. Keep both eyes on the traffic scene and your hands available on or immediately near the wheel.
- Confirm the availability icon and verify that you are not in off-road mode and are not towing.
- Pull the drive stalk toward you twice within one second. This is the documented engagement action in the R1T Owner’s Guide (R1T Owner’s Guide).
- Verify the instrument-cluster or center-display indication that Highway Assist is active. If the vehicle does not confirm engagement, continue driving manually and investigate only after you are safely stopped.
- Keep scanning far ahead, the adjacent lanes, mirrors, and the shoulder. Do not wait for an alert before looking for a developing hazard.
Do not treat a successful engagement as evidence that the road is fully covered or that the system will complete the trip. Eligibility can end at a lane-line change, a map boundary, a sensor obstruction, or a system fault.
Hands-on, hands-free, and driver monitoring
The phrase “hands-free” describes a permitted steering interaction in a defined operating area; it does not remove the requirement to supervise. For Enhanced Highway Assist, the infrared interior camera checks driver attention. A camera can detect some forms of inattention but cannot make an inattentive driver safe, predict every hazard, or take legal responsibility for the trip.
What the driver must still do
- Keep your eyes on the road and maintain a continuous mental picture of traffic, lane boundaries, and likely conflicts.
- Keep your hands ready for immediate steering or braking, even if the interface indicates hands-free operation.
- Confirm that a requested lane change is safe and legal before allowing it to proceed.
- Be prepared for a takeover prompt, a sudden reduction in assistance, unexpected braking, or a complete disengagement.
Rivian’s Owner’s Guide gives the correct standard: “Always be ready to take control of the vehicle.” The same warning applies when attention monitoring is active or when the road is included in a hands-free coverage description.

How Highway Assist can disengage
Rivian warns that Highway Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, and Lane Change on Command may disengage without warning. Environmental or system conditions can also make assistance operate differently than expected. Common risk factors include:
- Faded, missing, conflicting, or temporary lane markings.
- Construction zones, narrowed lanes, unusual barriers, and lane shifts.
- Heavy rain, snow, fog, spray, low sun, or glare.
- Sharp curves, cresting hills, merges, exits, and complex interchanges.
- Obstructed, dirty, or malfunctioning sensors or cameras.
- Traffic patterns that require an unplanned stop, evasive maneuver, or interpretation of a temporary control.
- A driver who is not responding to attention or hands-on prompts.
If a takeover request appears
- Look ahead and identify the immediate threat before making a large steering or braking input.
- Grip the wheel firmly and take control smoothly. Brake decisively if the situation requires it.
- Hold your lane, create space, and cancel or end the assistance function once the vehicle is stable.
- Continue manually until you can safely stop and determine why the request occurred.
- End the test if the cause is unclear, repeats, or involves a warning light, sensor fault, or behavior you cannot explain.
If the vehicle behaves unexpectedly
Do not attempt to “teach” the system while moving. Take over first. If the vehicle brakes, steers, or changes lanes unexpectedly, stabilize it, leave the test route, and record the road, weather, speed, lane markings, warning text, and software version only after stopping safely. A repeatable issue should be reported through Rivian’s support channels rather than reproduced in traffic.
Compare Mild, Medium, and Spicy drive styles
Rivian’s Autonomy Drive Styles change how the system follows and changes lanes; they do not change your responsibility as the driver. The descriptions below come from Rivian’s software update (Rivian software update).
| Drive style | Following gap | Lane-change behavior | Useful controlled-test question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mild | Larger gap | More gradual lane changes | Does the larger buffer make cut-ins and speed changes easier to anticipate? |
| Medium | Balances spacing and traffic flow | Balances cut-ins and traffic flow | Does the compromise remain predictable in ordinary traffic? |
| Spicy | Tighter gap | Quicker steering during lane changes | Can you comfortably monitor the smaller buffer and faster maneuver without reducing your attention? |
These labels are behavioral presets, not performance ratings. A tighter gap can leave less time and space for you to intervene, while a quicker lane change can feel more abrupt even when it is within the system’s intended behavior.
A fair way to compare the styles
- Select a familiar, straight section of eligible road with clear markings and moderate, consistent traffic.
- Use the same vehicle load, tire condition, weather, speed range, and route direction for each run.
- Change only the drive style. Leave other assistance settings unchanged.
- Observe following distance, responses to cut-ins, speed recovery, steering smoothness, and lane-change timing.
- End a run immediately if traffic becomes unpredictable or you need to intervene. Do not repeat a maneuver merely to obtain a cleaner comparison.
- Write observations after stopping, including the style, software version, road type, and any takeover or warning.
Changing settings while assistance is active
Rivian’s February 2026 software update says some drive modes, ride height, and ride-comfort settings can be adjusted while Highway Assist or Universal Hands-Free remains engaged (Rivian software update). This convenience does not make an adjustment safe in every moment.
Only change a setting when the road situation permits. Keep your eyes on traffic, avoid navigating menus during a merge, curve, lane change, or dense flow, and have a passenger make the change whenever possible. If the display demands attention or the driving situation deteriorates, maintain control first and postpone the adjustment.

Assistance modes: what to compare before a test
| Comparison point | What to verify in your vehicle |
|---|---|
| Hands-on versus hands-free | Whether the active feature requires steering-wheel contact, and what the display says about the current state. |
| Eligible-road coverage | The road type, mapped coverage, country or region, and software version. Published coverage figures are not a guarantee for every segment. |
| Driver monitoring | Whether an interior camera is used; Enhanced Highway Assist on Gen 2 uses an infrared camera in the interior rearview mirror. |
| Speed and lane markings | The permitted speed range and whether clear lane lines are required. Highway Assist’s documented activation range is 20–85 mph. |
| Lane-change behavior | Whether a maneuver is commanded by the driver, how the selected drive style affects it, and what prompts cancel it. |
| Traffic lights and stop signs | Universal Hands-Free will not stop or slow for traffic lights or stop signs; the driver must handle them. |
| Disengagement and takeover | The audible, visual, or tactile warnings shown by your vehicle and the actions required to regain control. |
| Generation and software | Your vehicle generation, current software build, region, and feature eligibility. These determine which assistance modes appear. |
If a value is not shown in your vehicle’s current guide or display, do not infer it from another Rivian model or an older software release.

Engaging because the icon is present
Mistake: assuming the icon guarantees stable operation for the whole road.
Safer approach: confirm lane markings, speed, road type, weather, drive mode, and towing status every time. The icon only indicates that engagement may be available at that moment.
Testing on a difficult road first
Mistake: starting in construction, poor weather, a tight interchange, or dense stop-and-go traffic.
Safer approach: begin on a familiar, clearly marked section with an easy manual fallback and expand conditions only after you understand the system’s limits.
Assuming hands-free means eyes-free
Mistake: looking at a phone, display, passenger, or scenery because steering contact is not required.

A feature that is technically available is not necessarily appropriate for the current road.
Bottom line for a safe Rivian evaluation
Use Settings > Vehicle > Driver Assistance to understand what your vehicle offers, verify the availability icon and operating conditions, then engage Highway Assist with two pulls of the drive stalk within one second while traveling 20–85 mph. Keep watching the road, remain ready to steer or brake, and treat every warning or disengagement as a command to take over. Compare Mild, Medium, and Spicy only on the same predictable route and one variable at a time. Universal Hands-Free still requires you to handle traffic lights and stop signs, and feature coverage can change with vehicle generation, software, markings, and region.
