What you must confirm before using Super Cruise
Super Cruise can provide hands-free steering assistance only when several conditions line up: your particular vehicle and model year support the feature, you are on a road GM has mapped as compatible, the system can see the lane markings, GPS is available, and the vehicle displays an engaged status. A road that works for one GM vehicle may not offer the same coverage for another, so do not rely on another driver’s experience or on a general map alone.

GM says its network includes more than 600,000 miles of compatible roads. The current official support page does not state a publication year for that figure, so treat it as a current page claim rather than an annual total. Check the live compatibility information and your manual immediately before a trip; mapped coverage and vehicle eligibility can differ.

Before moving, complete this short check:
- Vehicle capability: Verify that your trim and model year include Super Cruise and note where Adaptive Cruise Control and the Super Cruise controls are located.
- Route eligibility: Confirm that the route is on GM’s compatible-road network for your vehicle. Some vehicles are limited to divided highways or do not use the full expanded network.
- System visibility: Make sure the forward cameras and radars are clean and unobstructed. Dirt, mud, snow or heavy weather can prevent the cameras from recognizing lane markings.
- Driver readiness: Sit in a normal driving position, keep your seat belt fastened, and be prepared to steer, brake or cancel the system immediately.
- Legal and practical conditions: Never handle a handheld phone or other handheld device while driving, including when Super Cruise is active.
For cleaning locations and approved procedures, use the instructions for your vehicle rather than applying a generic sensor-cleaning method. A clean automotive microfiber cloth can help with ordinary dust, but GM does not endorse a particular cloth or material; your manual’s directions control.
Identify which engagement sequence your vehicle uses
GM does not use one universal button sequence. Chevrolet describes a newer flow for select 2026 and 2027 models and an earlier flow for 2025 and older vehicles plus some newer vehicles. The model-specific Owner’s Manual is the authority if the displays or controls in your vehicle differ from either description.
| Vehicle group | Control sequence | When hands-free operation is permitted |
|---|---|---|
| Select 2026–2027 models | Enable Adaptive Cruise Control and Super Cruise, engage Adaptive Cruise Control at the desired speed, then wait for the Super Cruise status and steering-wheel light bar to turn green. | Only after the green engaged indication and green light bar appear. Keep your hands on the wheel until that change occurs. |
| 2025 and older vehicles, plus some newer vehicles | Turn on Adaptive Cruise Control. On a compatible road, wait for the Super Cruise symbol to show availability and suitable conditions, then press the Super Cruise button when safe. | Only after the icon and steering-wheel light indicate active green status. A white availability symbol is not hands-free operation. |
Using the newer 2026–2027 flow
- Drive onto a road that is mapped as compatible for your vehicle and maintain a safe speed and following distance.
- Enable Adaptive Cruise Control using the control identified in your Owner’s Manual.
- Enable Super Cruise if your model requires a separate enablement step.
- Engage Adaptive Cruise Control at the speed you want. Keep both hands on the wheel while the system evaluates the road and conditions.
- Watch for the Super Cruise indicator and the steering-wheel light bar to turn green. Do not remove your hands when the indication is white, absent or another color.
- Once the green status is displayed, continue looking at the road and remain ready to take control. Green means the system is engaged, not that the vehicle can drive without supervision.
“Select 2026 and 2027 models” is intentionally narrower than every vehicle sold in those years. Equipment, trim and regional configuration can change the sequence, so compare the symbols and button locations with your manual.

- Turn on Adaptive Cruise Control.
- Continue driving while the vehicle checks whether the road is mapped for Super Cruise and whether conditions are suitable.
- Look for the Super Cruise symbol indicating availability. A white availability icon tells you the feature may be available; it does not authorize hands-free driving.
- When it is safe, press the Super Cruise button shown in your vehicle’s manual.
- Wait for the green Super Cruise icon and green steering-wheel light before taking your hands off the wheel.
- Keep your eyes on the road and your hands immediately ready to steer, even while the light remains green.
If the system never changes from available to engaged, do not force it by repeatedly pressing controls. Treat the road or conditions as unsuitable, keep driving manually and consult the troubleshooting guidance.

How to verify that the road and conditions are suitable
Use the GM-mapped route, not a familiar-road assumption
Super Cruise is restricted to roads GM has mapped as compatible. Coverage is not a promise that every lane, interchange or temporary traffic pattern will support hands-free operation. Eligibility also depends on the vehicle: some models are limited to divided highways, and some do not receive the full road expansion. Review the current information on Chevrolet’s About Super Cruise page and then verify your route in the vehicle.
On properly equipped vehicles, Google Maps with Google built-in can identify compatible roads and estimate how much of a route may be driven hands-free. That planning feature depends on the vehicle’s equipment, so its absence does not prove that Super Cruise is unavailable, and its route estimate does not override the live vehicle indication.
Check lane markings, GPS and sensor condition
GM says the cameras must be able to detect lane markings and GPS must be available. Rain, snow, mud, road spray, glare or worn markings can make lane detection unreliable. Before departure, inspect the areas identified in your manual for the Super Cruise cameras and radars. Remove dirt or mud using the specified cleaning method; do not cover, polish over or attach accessories near those sensors.
If a clean vehicle still reports that the system is unavailable, continue driving without hands-free assistance. A temporary loss of GPS, obscured markings or a road segment outside the mapped network is a condition to respect, not a fault to work around.

Do not treat the system as an obstacle-avoidance feature
Super Cruise cannot steer around every obstruction. GM specifically says it cannot steer around vehicles, animals, pedestrians, bicyclists, potholes, debris or construction barriers. Scan beyond the lane markings for those hazards and steer or brake yourself. A green status does not change this limitation.
Stay responsible while Super Cruise is engaged
Hands-free describes how you may hold the wheel; it does not describe who is driving. General Motors states: “Hands-free driving still requires the driver to stay alert because the driver is responsible for the vehicle, which is why drivers can be Hands-Free, Eyes On.” Read the complete safety explanation on GM’s Safe Hands-Free Driving Technology page.
The Driver Attention System monitors head pose and eye gaze and can prompt you to pay attention. It is a reminder system, not a replacement for your judgment. Keep your eyes directed toward the roadway, monitor traffic and the vehicle’s path, and be prepared to take control without waiting for an alert.

- Traffic behavior: Watch vehicles entering, leaving or stopping near your lane. Super Cruise does not guarantee that it will respond appropriately to every developing situation.
- Road geometry: Stay alert for merges, lane reductions, construction zones and changing markings. Be prepared to steer through a segment the system cannot handle.
- Surface hazards: Potholes, debris, animals and people may be outside the camera’s expected path. Identify and avoid them yourself.
- System status: Monitor the instrument display and steering-wheel light. A change from green, an attention prompt or a message asking you to take control requires an immediate response.
- Your own condition: Do not use the feature when tired, distracted, impaired or unable to respond quickly.
Never use a handheld device while driving. Hands-free operation is not permission to text, read a screen or perform another task that takes your attention away from traffic.

How to take control and turn Super Cruise off
When you need to leave the system, first take control of steering. This order prevents a transition from becoming a surprise change in the vehicle’s path.
- Grip and guide the wheel. Confirm that you are actively steering and that the vehicle is following the lane under your control.
- Choose the appropriate cancellation control. Chevrolet lists pressing the brake pedal, using the Regen On Demand paddle on applicable electric vehicles, pressing the Super Cruise button again, or cancelling Adaptive Cruise Control. Your vehicle may not provide every option.
- Confirm disengagement. Check the instrument display and steering-wheel light for the change in status described in your manual.
- Continue manually. Maintain a safe speed, following distance and lane position after the system is off.
Use your vehicle’s manual for the exact location and behavior of each control. On a vehicle with an electric-drive Regen On Demand paddle, pressing that paddle may cancel the assistance, but it is not a universal control for every GM vehicle.
Troubleshoot the most common Super Cruise problems
Chevrolet’s Troubleshooting Super Cruise page and your Owner’s Manual should be your first references for messages specific to your model. The following decision path keeps a temporary limitation from becoming an unsafe experiment.
The system is not available on a road you expected to use
- Verify that the road is in the current GM-compatible network and that your vehicle is eligible for that portion of the network.
- Check whether your vehicle is restricted to divided highways or another narrower road category.
- Look for a loss of GPS or an in-vehicle message indicating unsuitable conditions.
- Continue driving manually rather than pressing the Super Cruise button repeatedly.
The icon is white but never turns green
A white icon means availability, not active hands-free operation. Keep your hands on the wheel, confirm that Adaptive Cruise Control is correctly engaged, and check lane markings, weather and sensor cleanliness. If the display does not reach the green status specified for your model, do not remove your hands.

- Ultra-soft and non-abrasive car drying towels; will not scratch paints, vinyl, glass, finishes, or other surfaces
- Effectively cleans either dry or with liquid cleaners for streak-free results and a lint-free shine

The system disengages or asks for attention
Take control immediately, steer and adjust your speed as necessary. Scan for faded or hidden lane markings, a construction area, an obstruction, poor weather or a road segment that is no longer eligible. Clean the relevant camera and radar areas only according to the manual. If the message persists under suitable conditions, finish the drive manually and arrange service using the vehicle’s normal support process.
You are unsure which button or indicator applies
Do not infer the control from another GM model. Model year, trim and equipment can change both the button location and the enablement flow. Park safely and consult the printed or digital Owner’s Manual for the exact symbol, light-bar meaning and cancellation method.
A practical before, during and after checklist
Before entering a compatible road
- Confirm the vehicle’s model-specific Super Cruise capability.
- Check the route against the current GM map and note any road-type restriction.
- Clean cameras and radars as directed by the manual.
- Set your mirrors, seat and navigation before attempting engagement.
- Put the handheld phone away and commit to monitoring the roadway.
While the green status is displayed
- Keep your eyes on traffic and your hands ready to steer.
- Monitor the light bar, icon and attention prompts.
- Look for obstacles Super Cruise cannot avoid, including debris, potholes, people, animals and construction barriers.
- Take control as soon as the road, weather, markings or system status becomes uncertain.
After you cancel
- Verify that you are steering and controlling speed manually.
- Check the display so you know which assistance features, if any, remain active.
- If an alert repeats, record the message and consult the manual or Chevrolet support rather than attempting to re-engage under the same conditions.
The safe-use rule to remember
Only the combination of a compatible GM-mapped road, suitable conditions, the correct vehicle-specific engagement sequence and a green engaged indication permits hands-free steering assistance. Even then, your attention and responsibility do not transfer to the vehicle. Keep your eyes on the road, be ready to take control and disengage by taking the wheel first whenever conditions or confidence change.
