The practical answer: Bucharest’s surface network uses the same STB fare framework for buses, trolleybuses and trams. Choose a current TPBI ticket or subscription based on validity period and mode coverage, buy it through an available STB channel, and make sure it is activated or validated before you travel. Use TPBI’s transport program or STB’s timetable to confirm the line, direction and stops, then check InfoTB for live vehicle positions and disruption notices. A time-based title covers transfers during its validity window; it is not a new fare each time you board another surface vehicle.
Prices, products, line schedules and disruption information can change. Check the live official information immediately before departure, especially if your trip depends on a particular connection or on a vehicle described as electric.

What “electric bus” and “trolleybus” mean in Bucharest
STB operates the surface services covered by TPBI’s tariff rules: conventional buses, trolleybuses and trams. A trolleybus is an electrically powered vehicle that draws power from overhead wires while moving along its route. That operating mode is different from a battery-electric bus, which carries its energy onboard and may not need continuous overhead contact.
The official route program identifies line types, operators and endpoints, but the reviewed current sources do not provide a definitive route-by-route list of battery-electric bus assignments. A line shown as a bus line should therefore not be presented as reliably battery-electric. If the vehicle type matters to your journey, look for a current STB or TPBI fleet notice rather than relying on a route number, an older map or a photograph.

For ticketing, the important distinction is the service category rather than the propulsion system: TPBI’s surface tariff applies to STB bus, trolleybus and tram services. Metro and rail are not automatically included in every surface ticket.
Choose the right fare before you board
Start with the current TPBI fare table, not an old blog post or a remembered price. TPBI’s fare page, published with 7 April 2025 metadata, lists time-based titles and longer-duration products; the live table is the authority for the amount, validity and conditions in force when you travel.

TPBI describes a 90-minute journey basis for urban surface travel and its regulation also specifies 120-minute periods for applicable titles. Treat those numbers as validity units, not as statistics about travel time or network performance. The exact product name, price, eligible modes and conditions must be read in the current tariff table.
How time-based tickets and transfers work
For a time-based title, the clock starts at the first validation or at the qualifying electronic purchase event defined by that title’s terms. TPBI’s transport regulation defines the transfer period as running from that first validation until the allotted minutes or hours expire.
- Validate or activate the title before the first ride, following the instructions for the purchase medium.
- Board an eligible STB surface vehicle while the title is valid.
- Change to another eligible bus, trolleybus or tram without purchasing a separate title for each boarding.
- Continue making eligible changes until the stated period ends.
The regulation gives an important edge-case rule: a time-based title remains valid through the stop immediately after the stated interval expires. That does not extend the title for a new journey; it allows the ride already in progress to reach that next stop under the regulation.
Do not assume that every ticket includes every mode. An integrated title may cover metro or rail, but only when its product terms say so. If your itinerary combines STB surface transport with metro or rail, select a product whose scope explicitly includes those systems.

Where to buy a Bucharest bus or trolleybus ticket
STB’s passenger information lists several purchase channels: sales points, SMS, online card reloads and 24Pay, alongside electronic payment options that may be available at the time of travel. Availability, product selection and prices can change, so check the current STB ticketing information or the Tickets area of the official passenger app before relying on one method.

A sales point is useful when you need help selecting a product or want a physical reloadable card. InfoTB can display sales points and their opening hours. Opening hours are not a guarantee that a particular title is in stock, so verify the product and validity conditions at purchase.
Mobile, SMS and 24Pay purchases
These channels can deliver an electronic title rather than loading a physical card. Follow the confirmation message or in-app receipt and check whether the product is immediately active or requires a separate validation step. Keep the confirmation available for inspection according to the channel’s instructions.
Contactless or other electronic payment
When a current STB reader supports direct electronic payment, follow the terminal’s prompts and wait for confirmation. A successful bank-card interaction is not automatically proof that a different reloadable-card product has been loaded; treat the confirmation shown by the specific device as the evidence that your chosen title is active.
Online STB card reloads: writing the title and validating the ride
An online reload is a two-stage process. Buying the title on the STB Online portal does not immediately write it onto the physical card. STB’s terms state that the write-back cannot occur earlier than 60 minutes after the online purchase.

- Wait at least 60 minutes, as required by STB’s terms.
- Present the reloadable card to an STB vehicle validator so the title can be physically written to the card.
- Wait for the validator’s confirmation that the write-back succeeded.
- Validate the card for the journey if the product requires journey validation. Writing the reload and validating a ride are separate actions.
For an electronic-wallet reload, presenting the card to a validator only to write the reload does not pay for the journey by itself. After the reload is written, complete the normal validation step and look for its confirmation before assuming you are covered.

If the validator does not confirm the write-back, do not rely on the online receipt alone. Try the card again at an appropriate validator, check that the 60-minute minimum has passed and retain the purchase record in case STB support needs to investigate.
Find the correct route, direction and stop
Use the official TPBI transport program or STB’s program of circulation rather than an undated third-party map. The TPBI program lists the line type, operator, endpoints and current line program. STB’s timetable provides route selectors and schedules; the route listing is dynamic.
- Enter the line number or select the line in the official program.
- Confirm the direction by checking the destination or terminal shown for that branch.
- Read the intermediate stop list and identify the stop where you will board and the stop where you will leave.
- Check the timetable for the day and time of travel, allowing for the possibility that a service notice changes the normal pattern.
- Immediately before leaving, check current notices and the expected arrival in InfoTB.
Direction is not optional: the same line number can serve opposite terminals, and a vehicle displaying the right number but the wrong destination will not take you along the intended sequence of stops. Compare the vehicle’s destination display with the direction selected in the timetable before boarding.

STB’s InfoTB FAQ describes a map view for vehicles and a warning system for service disruptions. To follow a line, open Lines, choose the line, and then select its direction. The map can help you decide whether a vehicle is approaching and whether a disruption affects your planned boarding point.
InfoTB also maps sales points and their opening hours. An arrival time marked with an asterisk is a schedule-derived estimate rather than a live vehicle position. Treat that value as a timetable reference and leave extra margin if a connection is time-sensitive.
For a reliable departure check, use both the route program and the live information: the program establishes the planned stops and direction, while InfoTB supplies current vehicle and disruption context.

Boarding and transferring step by step
Before the first boarding
- Confirm that the title covers the vehicle type and any additional mode you intend to use.
- Make sure an electronic ticket shows as active, or validate a card or other medium as required.
- For an online reload, confirm that the card has been written and then complete journey validation.
- Keep the card, phone, SMS confirmation or receipt available for inspection.
When changing vehicles
Stay within the title’s validity period and use only the modes named in its terms. A transfer to another STB bus, trolleybus or tram during an eligible time window is part of the same time-based journey; it is not a fresh fare for each vehicle. If you change to metro or rail, verify that your title explicitly covers that mode.

Check the time shown for the title and allow for the next-stop rule in TPBI’s regulation. The title remains valid through the stop immediately after the interval expires, but you should not begin a new boarding after expiry on the assumption that the previous title has been extended.

“I paid online, but the card is empty.”
An online purchase is not the same as a completed card write-back. Confirm that at least 60 minutes have passed, present the card to an STB validator and wait for the confirmation message. Then validate the ride separately if required.
“The app shows an arrival, but no vehicle is visible.”
Check whether the time has an asterisk. STB says that mark identifies a schedule-based estimate rather than a live arrival. Recheck the selected direction, consult the disruption warning and allow additional time.
“The line number is correct, but the bus is going the wrong way.”
Read the destination or terminal on the vehicle and compare it with the direction selected in the TPBI or STB timetable. Board only when both match your intended route.
“I changed to a trolleybus and was charged again.”
Review the title’s validity and the time of first validation. A valid time-based surface title should cover eligible transfers among STB surface modes, but an expired title, an invalid activation or a product restricted to another mode can produce a different result. Keep the receipt and validation information if you need to ask STB to check the transaction.

“I assumed a bus line was battery-electric.”
The route program’s bus or trolleybus label does not establish a battery-electric fleet assignment. Trolleybuses use overhead electric supply, while battery-electric deployment can vary by vehicle and date. Look for a current operator notice if propulsion type is essential.
Are trolleybuses included in an STB ticket?
Yes, TPBI’s surface-transport fare framework covers STB trolleybus service alongside STB buses and trams. The title’s own conditions still control validity, duration and any mode restrictions. A surface title should not be treated as a universal Bucharest transport pass unless its terms specifically include other networks.
Which Bucharest routes use battery-electric buses?
The official material reviewed for this guide does not establish a definitive, current route-to-battery-electric-bus list. TPBI’s program identifies line type, operator and endpoints, and STB publishes schedules and service information, but those sources do not guarantee that every vehicle assigned to a named bus route is battery-electric.

For a current answer, check an up-to-date STB or TPBI fleet or service announcement close to the date of travel. Do not infer battery operation from a route number, from the fact that a vehicle is quiet, or from the use of the word “electric” in an informal map. A trolleybus route is electrically supplied through overhead wires and is not the same category as a battery-electric bus route.
A reliable departure checklist
- Open the current TPBI fare table and select a title whose duration and modes match your itinerary.
- Confirm the currently available purchase channel and its activation rule.
- If using an online reload, allow at least 60 minutes before presenting the card to a validator.
- After a reload is written, validate the journey and wait for confirmation.
- Check the line, terminal, direction and intermediate stops in the TPBI program or STB timetable.
- Open InfoTB shortly before departure for vehicle locations, disruption warnings and sales-point information.
- Treat an arrival time with an asterisk as schedule-derived rather than live.
- For a battery-electric vehicle requirement, seek a current fleet notice; do not assume every bus on a route has the same propulsion system.
Following those checks separates the three decisions that most often cause mistakes: choosing a title with the right scope, activating or validating it correctly, and boarding the correct direction under the current service plan.
