How to Use Automatic Emergency Braking and Forward Collision Alerts in a Pickup

Forward collision alert warns you; automatic emergency braking may intervene in some imminent crashes. Learn the difference, proper response, settings, sensor care and model-specific limits for your pickup.

Forward collision alert warns you; automatic emergency braking (AEB) may brake for you in a narrowly defined, imminent forward-crash situation. Neither system replaces attentive driving, a safe following distance, normal braking, or steering. The exact sensors, speed range, targets, controls, warning messages, and limitations depend on your pickup’s make, model year, trim, software and market, so use the owner’s manual for the final instructions.

Forward collision alert and AEB do different jobs

Pickup driver-assistance systems often place a forward-facing camera, radar, or both behind the grille, in the windshield area, or in another location specified by the manufacturer. They monitor the road for a possible forward collision and then either warn you, intervene with braking, or do both. The names vary: forward collision alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, enhanced automatic emergency braking and front pedestrian braking are not interchangeable labels.

Function What it does What it does not do Your responsibility
Forward collision alert/warning Provides visual, audible, haptic or seat-vibration warnings when the system judges that a forward impact may be imminent. It does not apply the brakes or control the throttle. Chevrolet’s support guidance states: “Forward Collision Alert does not engage the vehicle’s throttle or braking.” Look at the road, brake and steer as needed immediately.
Automatic emergency braking Can apply hard braking or add braking force when a forward collision appears imminent. Depending on the system, it may act when you have not braked or supplement your braking. It cannot prevent every crash, identify every object, or guarantee a complete stop. Keep monitoring traffic and retain control; do not wait for AEB before reacting.
Front pedestrian braking or related functions May detect a pedestrian in the vehicle’s path and brake in qualifying conditions. Detection and speed limits are system-specific; performance is not assured in every lighting, weather or road situation. Brake and steer yourself whenever a person or hazard is present.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) distinguishes a warning system from a collision-intervention system in the same way. A forward collision warning calls for driver action; AEB is designed to avoid or mitigate some crashes, not to make the vehicle autonomous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a forward collision alert looks and sounds like

Do not assume every pickup uses the same icon or sound. Chevrolet describes a detected-vehicle icon, an amber tailgating indication, and a flashing red collision alert accompanied by front beeps. Some vehicles can add a Safety Alert Seat that vibrates on the driver’s side. On vehicles equipped with timing controls, the warning distance may be selectable as Far, Medium or Near.

When an alert appears

An alert means the system has identified a closing risk according to its algorithms and current sensor view. It does not prove that a crash will occur, and the absence of an alert does not prove that the road is clear. Curves, hills, cut-in traffic, stationary objects, unusual vehicle shapes, poor lighting, weather and dirty sensors can all affect detection.

How to respond

  1. Immediately look through the windshield and mirrors to confirm what is ahead and around the pickup.
  2. Release the accelerator and apply firm, controlled braking when a collision risk exists.
  3. Steer around the hazard only when the path is clear and the maneuver is safer than staying in your lane.
  4. Continue monitoring traffic after the warning; an alert can end while the hazard remains.

NHTSA’s guidance is explicit that forward collision warning only warns and does not take action to avoid a crash. Treat every warning as a prompt to drive, not as permission to wait for automatic braking.

How automatic emergency braking intervenes

When the pickup determines that a forward collision is imminent, AEB may apply hard braking on its own, or it may increase the braking you have already started. The exact behavior depends on the vehicle and software. Some systems first issue a warning and then brake; others can intervene with little warning when the estimated time to impact is very short.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

AEB is an assist, not an automatic driver

  • AEB may reduce impact speed or help avoid a collision in qualifying conditions, but it cannot prevent every crash.
  • It may not recognize every vehicle, motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian, trailer, animal, road obstruction or vehicle crossing your path.
  • It does not replace safe speed, a proper following distance, lane awareness or active supervision.
  • You remain responsible for steering, braking, accelerating, monitoring traffic and responding to every alert.

Overriding or releasing braking

Some manufacturers allow you to override an AEB event by pressing the accelerator when it is safe. Chevrolet describes that capability for its systems. The way to release a complete stop, resume driving, or change intervention settings is vehicle-specific; use the exact owner’s manual rather than trying a generic pedal sequence.

Learn your pickup’s exact system before you need it

Feature names, menu locations, activation speeds, target types, sensor placement and operating limits vary by make, model year, trim, software and market. Read the driver-assistance section of the owner’s manual and identify the following items while parked:

  • The location of the forward camera and any radar sensors.
  • The instrument-cluster icons, warning colors, sounds and haptic alerts.
  • Whether the vehicle offers alert-only, braking assistance, or both.
  • The available warning-distance choices and how to change them.
  • The speed range in which each function operates.
  • Which targets the system can detect and which conditions disable it.
  • How the manual says to clean the sensor areas and what a fault message means.

Chevrolet’s support page specifically directs owners to their vehicle manual for speed ranges. That advice applies broadly: a range published for one pickup cannot be treated as a universal limit for another.

Typical controls and status messages

Depending on the pickup, the controls may be in the instrument-cluster settings, a center-screen vehicle menu, a steering-wheel button, or a dedicated physical switch. Look for labels such as Forward Collision Alert, Forward Automatic Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Alert Only, or Off. The label alone does not establish what the vehicle will do; read the associated description.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Alert-only, on and off

  • Alert only: The system can warn but will not provide automatic braking.
  • On or enabled: The system may warn and intervene within its operating conditions.
  • Off: Collision intervention is disabled. Some pickups retain a warning function; others disable both functions. Confirm in the manual.

Yellow icons, “unavailable” messages and camera warnings

A yellow icon or message can indicate that automatic braking was turned off. An obscured or dirty camera can also trigger a warning. The display may say that the feature is unavailable, blocked, or requires service. Do not assume the system is active simply because the vehicle started normally; verify the status on the driver display.

Sensor cleaning and conditions that limit performance

Forward systems need an unobstructed view. Weather, poor visibility, low traction, frost, dirt, poor lighting, glare, unusual vehicle shapes and electronic-stability-control (ESC) faults can reduce availability or performance. A camera mounted behind the windshield may be affected by contamination on the glass; radar sensors can be blocked by mud, snow, ice, a front accessory or damage.

Safe cleaning procedure

  1. Park safely and switch the pickup off if the manual instructs you to do so.
  2. Locate the camera viewing area and external sensors using the owner’s manual.
  3. Remove snow and ice gently; do not scrape or spray a sensor with a substance the manual forbids.
  4. Clean the windshield area in front of a forward camera with the approved method. A glass-safe automotive microfiber cloth is suitable only if it is consistent with the vehicle’s cleaning instructions.
  5. Inspect for cracks, tint, stickers, protective films, grille damage or accessories that could obstruct the sensor.
  6. Restart and drive only when the display confirms normal availability, if the manual specifies a confirmation.

If the warning remains after the sensor area is clean and visibility is good, follow the manual’s troubleshooting and service instructions. Persistent faults deserve attention; do not treat an unavailable system as if it were protecting you.

Speed ranges and target limits are not universal

Chevrolet’s published descriptions show why a generic speed promise is unsafe. One AEB description lists operation from 5 to 50 mph. The same support material notes that some advanced-camera vehicles can operate above 5 mph up to highway speeds, while some enhanced systems operate above 2 mph. These are descriptions of particular systems, not a universal pickup specification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your manual may define separate ranges for vehicle detection, pedestrian detection, warning, automatic braking and stopped-object detection. It may also exclude reverse travel, sharp curves, steep grades, towing configurations or certain road surfaces. Use the range and target list for your exact vehicle, not a figure copied from another model.

What to do when a warning appears while driving

Red collision warning with a clear hazard

Brake immediately and steer only if necessary and safe. Check mirrors before changing lanes, but do not delay emergency braking to study the display. Once the hazard is clear, leave extra space and consider whether poor visibility, tailgating or a cut-in vehicle caused the event.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeated alerts in normal traffic

Frequent warnings can result from following too closely, a warning-distance setting that is too far for your driving environment, a vehicle cutting into your lane, or sensor limitations. Increase following distance first. If the alerts continue with a clear road, inspect the sensor areas and consult the manual; do not simply disable the system without understanding why it is triggering.

Unexpected automatic braking

Keep both hands ready and maintain a safe gap so an intervention does not create a secondary hazard. After stopping, check for a pedestrian, cyclist, stopped vehicle or object that the system may have detected. If there was no apparent hazard, record the conditions and have the vehicle checked if the event repeats. Do not test AEB by deliberately approaching an object.

Can you drive when AEB is unavailable?

Usually you can move the pickup, but you must drive as though no collision-assistance system exists until the manual says the fault is resolved. Reduce speed for conditions, increase following distance, keep the windshield and sensors clear, and arrange service when a status warning persists. If the display also reports an ESC, braking, steering or other safety-system fault, follow the manual’s urgent instructions and stop driving if it directs you to do so.

There is no single reset procedure that is safe for every pickup. Some warnings clear after visibility returns; others require an ignition cycle, calibration or professional service. Never disconnect a camera or radar sensor to suppress a message.

How to set up and use the system responsibly

  1. Identify the vehicle: Confirm make, model year, trim, software version and market in the owner’s manual.
  2. Find the sensors: Learn which windshield and exterior areas must remain unobstructed.
  3. Check the menu: Confirm whether forward alert and AEB are enabled, alert-only, or off.
  4. Choose a sensible alert distance: If Far, Medium and Near are offered, select a setting that gives you time to react without using the warning as a substitute for following distance.
  5. Learn the signals: Memorize the icon, color, beep, steering-wheel vibration or Safety Alert Seat pattern.
  6. Drive normally: Scan ahead, maintain a safe gap, brake smoothly and keep your hands and attention on driving.
  7. Respond to every alert: Verify the hazard and brake or steer immediately; never wait for AEB.
  8. Check status after a warning: If the system says unavailable, inspect the sensor area and consult the manual.

Common misconceptions and mistakes

  • “Forward collision alert brakes for me.” It is a warning function. Chevrolet explicitly says it does not engage the throttle or braking.
  • “AEB guarantees a stop.” It may avoid or mitigate some impacts, but speed, traction, visibility, target type and sensor view determine what is possible.
  • “Every pickup uses the same 5–50 mph range.” Published ranges differ even within one manufacturer’s systems.
  • “A clean grille is enough.” A windshield-mounted camera, radar cover, lighting, weather and ESC status can also matter.
  • “Turning the feature off is harmless.” It removes some assistance and may leave only an alert or no function at all. Understand the setting before changing it.
  • “I can test it with a box or parked car.” Do not stage a collision. Use the manual’s descriptions and professional service for diagnosis.

Key takeaways for pickup drivers

  • Forward collision alert tells you to act; it does not brake for you.
  • AEB can apply or supplement braking in certain imminent forward-collision conditions, but it is not autonomous driving.
  • The driver remains responsible for steering, braking, accelerating, monitoring traffic and maintaining a safe gap.
  • Operating speeds, detected targets, settings, sensor locations and warning messages are vehicle-specific.
  • Weather, visibility, traction, dirt, frost, poor lighting, unusual objects and ESC faults can limit performance.
  • A persistent unavailable or fault message requires the troubleshooting and service procedure in your pickup’s manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does forward collision alert brake for you?

No. Forward collision alert is a warning. Chevrolet’s support guidance says it does not engage the vehicle’s throttle or braking. Automatic emergency braking is the separate function that may apply or supplement braking in qualifying imminent-crash conditions.

How do I turn on automatic emergency braking?

Use the driver-display or center-screen settings described in your exact owner’s manual. Pickup menus and labels differ by model year, trim, software and market; verify that the display shows AEB enabled rather than Alert Only or Off.

Why is my collision warning light on?

It may indicate an active warning, that automatic braking was turned off, or that a camera or other sensor is obscured or unavailable. Check the icon meaning in the manual, clean only the prescribed sensor areas, and arrange service if the message persists.

Can I drive if automatic braking is unavailable?

Drive only as if the system were not present, unless the manual directs you to stop. Increase following distance, adjust speed to conditions, keep sensors clear and follow the vehicle’s fault and service instructions.
