Adaptive cruise control (ACC) and lane-centering assistance can share speed, distance and steering work, but they do not replace you. The safe method is to identify the exact system in your Stellantis vehicle, follow its model-year and market-specific manual, keep watching the road, and be ready to steer, brake or accelerate immediately. Controls, names, speed ranges, alerts and hands-free rules vary among vehicles such as Ram and Jeep models.
This guide explains the common operating logic and a conservative procedure. Treat the owner’s manual for your exact model, trim, model year and market as the authority for every button, indicator and limitation.

What ACC and lane centering do together
ACC manages longitudinal control: it aims for a set speed and adjusts acceleration or braking when traffic ahead changes, using the vehicle’s sensing and control systems. Lane-centering assistance manages steering support: when it can correctly detect lane markings, it applies steering toward the lane center.
They solve different problems. ACC does not keep the vehicle between lane lines, and lane centering does not set a safe following distance or guarantee that the vehicle will stop for every hazard. When both are active, the vehicle may provide steering plus acceleration and braking support. Stellantis describes that combination as Level 2 driver assistance, not autonomous driving. You remain responsible for the complete driving task.

A European-market Jeep Compass announcement, for example, describes Highway Assist as a combination of ACC and lane centering. It says lane centering uses radar and cameras and depends on correctly detected markings. That is an example of one system, not a specification for every Stellantis vehicle.
Before you try it: identify your vehicle’s exact system
Stellantis uses different names and configurations across brands, markets and years. Examples include Active Driving Assist, Hands-free Driving Assist and Highway Assist. A vehicle can have ACC without lane centering, lane-departure warning without lane centering, or a mode that is available only on particular trims and roads.
Use the owner’s manual as the operating source
Find the section for adaptive cruise control, lane-centering or highway assistance in the manual for your model year and market. Confirm:
- Which steering-wheel controls start, pause, resume or cancel each function.
- Whether lane centering must be enabled separately from ACC.
- The minimum and maximum speeds, if any, and whether a complete stop and restart are supported.
- Required lane-marking, road, weather and sensor conditions.
- How the system signals availability, active control, a hands-on request and a takeover request.
- Whether your vehicle has a hands-on mode only or an explicitly approved hands-free mode.
Do not copy a button sequence from another Stellantis model. The announcements cited here describe named examples, not a universal control layout.
Check equipment and market availability
Stellantis’ 2023 Corporate Social Responsibility Report refers to ACC on “most” Stellantis vehicles, not every vehicle. Manufacturer announcements also tie features to specific models, years, trims and markets. Confirm the equipment installed in your vehicle rather than inferring it from the badge, a similar vehicle or an online video.
How do I use adaptive cruise control and lane centering together?
Use this sequence as a safety framework, then substitute the exact controls and conditions from your manual.

1. Prepare before moving
- Adjust your seat, mirrors and steering position. Fasten your seat belt and make sure every occupant is belted.
- Clean and unobstruct the windshield areas in front of cameras and any exterior sensor areas identified in the manual. Do not install accessories or coverings over them.
- Choose a road and traffic situation in which you can supervise comfortably. Do not first test the system in a work zone, dense merge, sharp curve, poor weather or unfamiliar complex interchange.
- Set navigation, climate and other controls before activation when possible. A driver-assistance mode is not a reason to handle a phone.
2. Reach a suitable speed and activate ACC
On the road, use the manual’s ACC control to turn the feature on and set a speed. The instrument cluster should show a clear availability or active indicator. If the system reports that it is unavailable, do not attempt to force activation; continue driving manually and consult the conditions listed in the manual.
Set a speed appropriate for traffic, visibility, weather and the legal limit. ACC follows the vehicle ahead according to its programmed distance and behavior; it does not know your preferred margin unless you select the available following-distance setting.
3. Select a following distance you can defend
Use the vehicle’s documented distance control to choose a gap that gives you time to respond. A shorter setting is not a substitute for attention, and a longer setting can be appropriate in rain, darkness, heavy traffic or when sight distance is limited. Watch the actual space in front of your vehicle rather than relying only on the icon or selected bars.
4. Enable lane-centering assistance
Use the separate lane-centering or highway-assistance control described in your manual. Confirm the cluster indicates steering assistance, not merely lane-departure warning. The steering wheel may feel lightly guided or apply corrections as the vehicle tracks detected markings.
Keep both hands available and continue scanning. Lane centering can only respond to what its sensors detect. Correctly painted, visible lane lines are a stated condition in the Jeep Compass example; faded, missing, covered or confusing markings can prevent engagement or cause a warning and disengagement.

6. Respond immediately to alerts
If the system requests hands-on attention, detects that you are not monitoring, or issues a takeover warning, respond promptly. Place your hands on the wheel, look at the road and take full control as needed. Do not wait for a second warning or assume that ACC will maintain speed while you decide what to do.
7. End assistance deliberately
Cancel the mode using the documented control before a lane change, a complicated junction, a road with uncertain markings or any situation in which you want direct control. Be prepared for the vehicle to stop maintaining the set speed or steering support when you cancel. Verify the cluster shows the mode is off.
Do I need to keep my hands on the wheel?
Unless your specific vehicle and active mode expressly permits hands-free operation, keep your hands on the wheel. Ram describes Active Driving Assist as hands-on-wheel, eyes-on-road Level 2 assistance. That is different from a separately described Hands-free Driving Assist mode.
Recommended Free Tools
Hands-on supervision means more than resting a fingertip on the rim. You must be able to make an immediate, controlled steering input and remain engaged with the road. A hands-on alert is a request for you to resume the required contact, not an invitation to look away.
Can I take my hands off with a Stellantis driver-assist system?
Only when your exact vehicle has an explicitly identified hands-free mode, and only under every condition stated in its manual. Ram’s announcement describes Hands-free Driving Assist as a Level 2+ mode limited to approved roadways with driver-attention verification. Older Jeep announcements likewise described hands-free assistance for particular trims and approved roads.
Hands-free does not mean eyes-off. Stellantis says drivers using its announced STLA AutoDrive system must remain seated, belted and ready to assume control when prompted. Regional laws on phone use and distracted driving still apply. Keep your eyes on the road, do not use a phone, and be prepared to put your hands back on the wheel immediately.

Hands-on and hands-free modes: what to compare
| Question | Hands-on assistance | Explicitly approved hands-free assistance |
|---|---|---|
| Driver’s hands | Remain on or ready on the wheel as required by the vehicle. | May be off only while the documented mode and conditions remain active; be ready to resume control. |
| Eyes and attention | Eyes-on-road, continuous supervision. | Still eyes-on-road with attention verification; hands-free is not eyes-off. |
| Road eligibility | Use only where the manual permits the feature. | Generally restricted to approved roadways or motorway segments identified by the vehicle and manual. |
| Detection | Requires the system to detect suitable lane markings and traffic conditions. | Also depends on its approved-road and driver-monitoring conditions. |
| Alerts | Hands-on and takeover alerts require prompt action. | Attention and takeover alerts require prompt action even when hands-free is permitted. |
| Availability | Varies by model year, trim and market. | More limited; never infer availability from the Stellantis name alone. |
What should I do when lane centering disengages?
Take over steering immediately and keep a safe speed. An indicator or chime may tell you why, but your first action is control of the vehicle, not diagnosis.
Common conditions that can interrupt assistance
- Lane markings are faded, missing, obscured, split or incorrectly detected.
- A work zone, temporary lane shift, merge, exit gore or unusual road edge confuses the lane path.
- A curve, hill or crest limits the system’s view.
- Weather, glare, darkness, spray or dirt reduces sensor visibility.
- Traffic or a stopped vehicle requires a response outside the mode’s documented behavior.
- The driver-monitoring system detects insufficient attention or the required hands-on state is not met.
- The vehicle reaches a speed, road or operating condition outside the system’s allowed range.
After you have control
- Steer to the center of your lane and adjust speed manually or with the brake.
- Increase following distance if visibility or traffic is uncertain.
- Read the cluster message and follow the manual’s recovery instructions.
- If the feature repeatedly becomes unavailable in ordinary conditions, stop using it and arrange qualified service rather than repeatedly cycling the controls.
Situations in which you should take over early
Do not use lane centering as a substitute for deliberate driving decisions. Take direct control before or during:
- Lane changes, merges, exits and turns. Check mirrors and blind spots and make the maneuver yourself.
- Construction zones, temporary markings, narrow lanes and roads with barriers close to the vehicle.
- Faded, wet, snow-covered or conflicting lane lines.
- Sharp curves, crests, dips and roads where you cannot see far enough ahead.
- Stopped, disabled or unusual vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, animals or objects in or near the lane.
- Emergency vehicles, police directions, toll areas and any situation requiring a judgment the assistance system is not designed to make.
- Heavy rain, snow, fog, glare or any condition that makes you question sensor detection.
These are prudent driving decisions, not a promise that every Stellantis system will fail in each case. The exact response remains vehicle-specific.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why ACC may slow down, speed up or behave differently than expected
ACC reacts to detected traffic and the settings selected by the driver. It can slow as the vehicle closes on traffic ahead and adjust toward the set speed when the path is clear, subject to the design of that vehicle. It may not identify every hazard or interpret a complex scene as a human driver would.
Keep your foot and attention ready for braking. Do not assume that a detected lead vehicle will remain detected through a curve, lane change or visual obstruction. If traffic stops, follow the manual’s instructions for stop-and-go behavior and restart; some systems require driver confirmation rather than automatically moving again.

| Jeep Grand Cherokee L announcement, 2021/2022 | Active Driving Assist described as hands-on and eyes-on; hands-free assistance announced for specific trims and approved roads. | Historical example of variation by trim and road. |
| STLA AutoDrive announcement, February 20, 2025 | Stellantis described Level 2 and Level 2+ modes at higher speeds and Level 3 operation up to 60 km/h (37 mph) under stated conditions. | The announcement does not identify a current retail model or market deployment; do not assume it is in your vehicle. |
Do not confuse driver-assistance levels
When ACC and lane centering provide speed and steering support together, Stellantis’ 2023 CSR report uses that as an example of Level 2. You must supervise and perform the driving task. A Level 2+ label in a manufacturer announcement can describe additional hands-free operation under constraints, but it still requires attention and readiness to take over.
STLA AutoDrive’s announced Level 3 capability—up to 60 km/h (37 mph) under stated conditions, with a potential future capability described up to 95 km/h (59 mph)—is not evidence that an unspecified Stellantis vehicle has that function. Those figures must not be treated as ACC operating limits for every model.
A practical pre-drive checklist
- Exact model year, trim and market confirmed in the manual.
- ACC and lane-centering availability verified in the vehicle, not assumed from the brand.
- Windshield and specified sensor areas unobstructed.
- Seat belt fastened and seating position correct for driver monitoring.
- Road markings visible and the road permitted for the chosen mode.
- Following distance and set speed appropriate for traffic and weather.
- Hands on the wheel unless an explicitly approved hands-free mode is active.
- Eyes on the road, mirrors checked and phone put away.
- Clear plan to cancel assistance before a lane change, complex junction or uncertain section.
What the system cannot transfer to the car
You still choose when it is safe to change lanes, whether a gap is adequate, how to respond to a hazard, and when road conditions exceed the system’s limits. You also remain responsible for obeying speed limits, lane-use rules and distracted-driving laws. No manufacturer-published statistic in the material for this guide establishes a specific crash-reduction percentage for ACC or lane centering, so do not use one as a safety guarantee.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen to stop using the feature and seek help
Stop relying on the assistance if warning messages persist, a sensor or camera is damaged, steering or braking behavior seems abnormal, or the system repeatedly disengages in conditions that appear suitable. Drive manually and consult the owner’s manual and an appropriately qualified dealer or service professional. Do not attempt an improvised retrofit or treat a generic accessory as a way to make the system safe or compatible.
The safe operating rule
Use ACC to help manage speed and distance and lane centering to provide limited steering support, but remain the active driver. Confirm the exact mode, road eligibility and supervision requirements every time. Keep watching, keep your hands ready, and take over before the system reaches a situation it cannot clearly perceive or safely handle.
