How to Use a Tesla Model 3 or Model Y to Power Your Home During an Outage

A Model 3 or Model Y can back up supported home circuits only through Tesla Powershare with compatible Powerwall and Wall Connector equipment. Here is how to check eligibility, prepare, operate and troubleshoot it safely.

A Tesla Model 3 or Model Y can provide home backup only through Tesla’s documented Powershare Home Backup setup: a Powershare-capable vehicle paired with a supported Powerwall installation and a Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3. The car is not, by itself, a whole-home generator, and eligibility varies by vehicle, software, location and home equipment.

If you only need to run individual electronics or tools, Tesla documents a separate Gen 3 Mobile Connector and Tesla Outlet Adapter use case. That setup supplies devices directly; it does not energize household circuits.

What you need for Model 3 or Model Y home backup

Tesla’s Powershare support documentation describes Model 3 and Model Y home backup as a Powerwall-based system. The vehicle must support Powershare, the home must have a compatible Powerwall and Wall Connector configuration, and Tesla must enable and register the feature for the site. A normal charging installation, a portable cable or an adapter connected to a household outlet is not a substitute.

Tesla’s Model 3 Owner’s Manual describes the function this way: "Powershare Home Backup allows you to use your vehicle as a source of backup power for your home." The Model Y manual describes the same operating concept. In practice, the supported equipment and the installer’s protected-load design determine which circuits receive power.

1. Check whether your vehicle supports Powershare

Do this check before buying equipment or scheduling installation. Tesla says new Model 3 and Model Y vehicles ordered in the United States or Puerto Rico after October 1, 2026 are capable of Powershare. Some earlier vehicles also qualify, so the order date alone does not establish eligibility.

Use the in-car eligibility check

  1. Park the vehicle and open the touchscreen menu.
  2. Go to Software > Additional Vehicle Information.
  3. Look for the Powershare Support toggle.
  4. If the toggle is absent, confirm that the vehicle software is current, then contact Tesla rather than assuming the car is compatible.

The owner manuals specify vehicle firmware 2026.32.6 or later and Tesla app version 4.60.0 or later for Powershare Home Backup with Powerwall. Updating the app or car may resolve an outdated-software issue, but it cannot add support to a vehicle that is not an eligible configuration.

Confirm regional availability

Tesla states that Powershare Home Backup is not available in Mexico. The order-date eligibility statement above is specifically for the United States and Puerto Rico. In other markets, ask Tesla whether the feature, required hardware and local electrical approval are available before planning an installation; do not infer availability from a vehicle sold in another country.

2. Identify the Powerwall and Wall Connector in your home

Record the exact Powerwall model and Wall Connector model. Tesla’s current Powershare configuration note distinguishes what it documents as available from configurations it lists as coming soon.

Vehicle-to-home element Tesla-documented status What to verify
Vehicle Powershare-capable Model 3 or Model Y Use the in-car Powershare Support toggle and confirm software requirements.
Energy storage Powerwall required for the Model 3/Y home-backup path Identify the installed Powerwall generation and site registration.
Wall Connector Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3 Confirm the connector is part of the supported Powerwall configuration, not merely a compatible charger in isolation.
Powerwall 3 with Universal or Gen 3 Wall Connector Tesla lists this Model 3/Y V2H configuration as available Have the installer verify wiring, protection and local approval for the particular home.
Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+ Tesla’s note says Model 3/Y Powershare support is coming soon Do not assume an existing Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+ installation is enabled; ask Tesla for the current status before relying on it.

“Coming soon” is Tesla’s current wording for the Powerwall 2 and Powerwall+ status in that configuration note. It does not provide a dependable expansion date, so a planned upgrade or outage strategy should be based on the configuration Tesla confirms for your address.

3. Get a supported installation, not an improvised connection

Contact Tesla support or a Tesla Certified Installer to assess the vehicle, Powerwall, Wall Connector, electrical service and intended loads. Tesla says the installation varies with the home configuration. The assessment should establish whether the design will back up selected essential circuits or a broader set of circuits, and whether the service, panel and loads fit the supported equipment.

Partial-home backup

A partial-backup design places selected circuits—such as refrigeration, lighting, communications equipment or a heating control—inside the protected portion of the system. This approach limits demand and generally makes the vehicle’s stored energy last longer. Which circuits can be included is a site-specific decision; do not assume a particular appliance will run without the installer checking its starting and running demand.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Whole-home or larger-load backup

A larger protected load can consume the available energy quickly and may exceed the system’s output capability. High-demand heating, cooling, cooking, pumps or workshop equipment can change the result substantially. Tesla’s What Can Powershare Back Up guidance separates essential and larger loads and emphasizes that the home configuration controls what can be backed up. Ask the installer to document the supported load scope instead of treating “whole home” as an automatic capability.

Why backfeeding is unsafe

Do not connect the car to a wall outlet, panel or transfer equipment through an improvised adapter, and do not use non-isolated wiring to energize the house. A supported installation must manage the connection between the grid, Powerwall, vehicle and protected circuits. Improvised backfeed can energize utility lines during an outage and can damage equipment or cause fatal shock.

4. Prepare the system before an outage

Once Tesla or the installer has enabled the feature, complete a dry-run review while the grid is available. Keep the following information and settings current:

  • Vehicle charge: Start an outage with as much charge as is practical for your expected needs. Tesla’s runtime examples assume 90% vehicle charge at the beginning of backup, but your actual starting level may be different.
  • Discharge limit: Check the vehicle’s set limit. Backup stops when the battery reaches that limit, so a high reserve setting leaves less energy for the house.
  • Connection: Confirm the vehicle is connected to the supported Wall Connector and that the connector, Powerwall and Tesla account are registered as the installer configured them.
  • Loads: Know which circuits are protected and which large appliances should be turned off or used sparingly during an outage.
  • Communications: Keep the Tesla app available and know how to contact Tesla support or the installer if the system reports a fault. Internet service may not be required for the electrical transfer itself, but it is useful for status and troubleshooting.
  • Weather and battery condition: A cold high-voltage battery can interrupt or limit service. If severe weather is expected, reduce discretionary loads and begin with a higher vehicle charge.

Do not wait for a real outage to discover that the car is parked away from the connector, the discharge limit is too high or a protected circuit includes a load that exceeds the design.

5. What happens when the grid fails

The Model 3 and Model Y owner manuals describe an automatic process when the compatible vehicle is connected and its battery remains above the discharge limit.

  1. Grid service is lost. The Powerwall system detects the outage and isolates the supported home installation from the utility.
  2. The system transfers to backup. Tesla warns that the home may experience a brief interruption while the transition occurs. Sensitive equipment can reboot, so use an uninterruptible power supply where a short interruption would be unacceptable.
  3. The vehicle supplies energy through the supported system. The protected circuits receive power within the limits of the Powerwall, Wall Connector, vehicle and site design.
  4. Demand is monitored. If household demand is too high, backup can stop or loads can be shed. Turn off nonessential or high-demand appliances and reduce the load as Tesla’s manual advises.
  5. The battery reaches its discharge limit or the grid returns. At the configured limit, vehicle backup stops. When utility service returns, the system transitions back again; Tesla warns that this change can also cause a brief interruption.

Backup is therefore conditional, not an uninterrupted promise of power. The vehicle must remain connected, the system must remain within its operating limits and the battery must have usable energy above the configured reserve.

6. How long can the vehicle run the home?

Tesla’s 2026 support page gives broad estimates rather than a guarantee. It bases them on average United States household consumption of 30 kWh per day and a vehicle starting at 90% charge.

Vehicle version Tesla’s stated estimate
Model 3 Standard Up to two days
Model Y Standard Up to two days
Model 3 Premium Over two days
Model Y Premium Over two days
Model 3 Performance or Model Y Performance Over two days

These figures are not a battery-capacity guarantee for your address. Tesla says results vary with solar equipment, vehicle model, actual household energy use and the state of charge when backup begins. A home using 60 kWh per day will consume energy roughly twice as quickly as the 30 kWh-per-day example, while a carefully managed essential-load panel may use far less. Heating, air conditioning, electric water heating, cooking, pumps and vehicle charging can dominate consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to make an estimate for your own home

  1. List the circuits the installer has placed in the protected backup area.
  2. Estimate their normal daily energy use from utility data or appliance measurements.
  3. Remove discretionary loads you will not run during an outage.
  4. Start with the vehicle’s actual state of charge, not the 90% assumption used in Tesla’s examples.
  5. Treat the result as a planning range and retain a reserve for uncertainty, cold temperatures and restart surges.

Only the installer’s system assessment can establish the output and load limits for your particular Powerwall and electrical service. Runtime also changes during the outage as people switch appliances on and off.

7. Which household loads should you prioritize?

Use the protected-circuit list supplied by the installer as the boundary of what the system can run. Prioritize loads that preserve food, communications, safety and basic comfort. Larger or motor-driven loads need special attention because their starting demand can be much higher than their normal running demand.

  • Usually prioritized: refrigerator or freezer, selected lights, internet and communications equipment, security systems, medical equipment designed for the available power and controls for heating or cooling.
  • Assess carefully: heat pumps, central air conditioning, well pumps, sump pumps, electric water heaters, induction ranges, clothes dryers and workshop tools.
  • Often deferred: pool equipment, battery charging for other vehicles, resistance heating and simultaneous use of several large appliances.

This is a load-management decision, not a promise that every item in a category will operate. Ratings, motor starts, local code and the installer’s design determine the answer.

8. A different option: power individual devices directly

If your goal is to keep a few tools, lamps or electronic devices running rather than energize home circuits, Tesla documents a separate route using a Gen 3 Mobile Connector and Tesla Outlet Adapter. The adapter lets the connector supply compatible devices directly from the vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This device-level arrangement does not feed a breaker panel, transfer switch or household wiring. It does not provide the isolation, load management or automatic outage transfer of Powershare Home Backup. Use it only for devices and tools within the adapter and connector’s documented limits, keep the vehicle safely parked and follow Tesla’s instructions for the equipment.

Question Powershare Home Backup Mobile Connector plus Outlet Adapter
Primary purpose Backup for supported home circuits Direct power for individual electronics or tools
Home equipment Powerwall plus Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3, with a supported installation Gen 3 Mobile Connector and Tesla Outlet Adapter
Automatic outage transfer Yes, when the compatible system is connected and enabled No household-circuit transfer
Can it energize the home panel? Only through the Tesla-documented, properly installed system No
What determines the usable scope? Vehicle eligibility, Powerwall model, electrical design and protected loads Device requirements and the connector/adapter’s documented limits

9. Troubleshoot the common failure points

The Powershare Support toggle is missing

Check the vehicle software version and Tesla app version first. Then verify the vehicle’s order market and date, because Tesla’s stated automatic eligibility cutoff applies to U.S. and Puerto Rico orders after October 1, 2026 and some earlier cars may qualify separately. If the toggle still does not appear, contact Tesla support with the vehicle identification details; do not proceed based on a trim name alone.

Backup does not start during an outage

  • Confirm the vehicle is physically connected to the supported Wall Connector.
  • Check that the vehicle battery is above its configured discharge limit.
  • Verify that Tesla has enabled and registered Powershare for the home.
  • Check the Powerwall and Wall Connector status for an active fault.
  • Confirm the home is using the documented Powerwall and connector configuration for the vehicle.

If the system remains unavailable after these checks, contact Tesla or the certified installer. Do not bypass the system with a homemade cable.

Backup stops after it begins

The owner manuals identify the discharge limit, excessive household demand and a cold high-voltage battery as relevant limits. Turn off large or unnecessary loads, allow the battery to reach a suitable operating condition and check whether utility service has returned. If the vehicle has reached the discharge limit, it will not resume supplying energy until the system is recharged and operating conditions permit.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Appliances reboot or lights flicker during transfer

Tesla warns of brief interruptions when backup starts and when grid power returns. Sensitive electronics may need their own UPS or other ride-through protection. Repeated or extended interruptions outside those transitions warrant an installer inspection.

10. Questions to settle before relying on the system

  • Is the vehicle’s Powershare Support toggle present, and are the vehicle and app software at the documented versions?
  • Is the home’s Powerwall a model Tesla currently supports for Model 3/Y V2H, or is it a Powerwall 2 or Powerwall+ configuration that Tesla currently lists as coming soon?
  • Is the Wall Connector a Universal Wall Connector or Wall Connector 3 installed as part of the supported system?
  • Which exact circuits are protected, and what are their running and starting loads?
  • What discharge limit and minimum vehicle charge will you use before severe weather?
  • Who will respond if the system fails during an outage: Tesla support, the certified installer or both?

Safety and availability boundaries

Use only Tesla-documented equipment and a qualified installation. Never backfeed a residence through an ordinary outlet, splice a charging cable into house wiring or defeat the isolation between the utility and the backup system. Keep people away from damaged cables, flooded equipment and exposed electrical parts, and follow local emergency guidance.

Tesla’s published configuration can change, particularly for Powerwall 2, Powerwall+ and markets outside the United States and Puerto Rico. Verify the current support status for your vehicle identification number, Powerwall model and address immediately before installation or an outage plan.
