ALL4 automatically varies torque between the front and rear axles as conditions change. DTC is a separate stability-control setting that permits more wheel slip for situations such as deep snow, slush, loose sand or an uncleared surface. That extra slip can help the Countryman gain momentum, but it also reduces stability during acceleration and cornering, so it is not an all-purpose off-road mode.
The exact DTC button, display message and operating sequence depend on your Countryman’s generation, market and equipment. The 2024 F60 owner’s manual describes pressing the DTC button to activate “TRACTION” and pressing it again to switch the function off. Treat that as an example for that manual edition, not a universal instruction for every Countryman.

What ALL4 does on loose terrain
MINI describes ALL4 as an all-wheel-drive system that varies the amount of drive sent to the front and rear axles according to driving conditions and the road surface. The driver does not select a fixed “4WD” range or a universal loose-terrain program in the cited MINI material. In ordinary driving, the system continuously manages torque distribution while the stability-control system monitors wheel speed, vehicle motion and available grip.

When one axle has less grip, ALL4 can redirect drive to the other axle to help maintain progress. The practical implication is simple: select the normal drive mode, point the car where you want it to go and use gentle throttle. There is no evidence in the cited material that a driver should manually lock the axles, choose a sand setting or force a permanent front/rear split on a Countryman.

BMW Group’s description of the 2017 Countryman explains that that generation’s system used a power take-off unit integrated into the front-axle differential, a propeller shaft to the rear axle and a hang-on clutch to meter torque to the rear wheels. Its control electronics worked with Dynamic Stability Control to adapt the distribution as conditions changed. Those components explain the principle of automatic torque transfer, but they should not be assumed to describe every later Countryman generation without a matching technical specification. Historical context for the original Countryman
MINI’s original UK launch material described the early Countryman as normally front-wheel drive, with an electromagnetic clutch engaging rear drive when front slip was detected or when driving was particularly enthusiastic. It also said the rearward proportion of power varied with conditions. That is useful historical context for the first-generation ALL4 design, not a specification to apply automatically to a newer car. The launch material called the vehicle a “soft off-roader” for everyday situations such as snow, parking in a field for a sporting event or driving on a beach. Lee Connolly, MINI UK Product Manager, used the exact phrase: “Countryman ALL4 is a soft off-roader for use in everyday situations like driving in snowy conditions, parking in a field for a sporting event or driving on the beach.” The statement belongs to the 2010 launch and is not a guarantee that every Countryman can safely tackle difficult trails. What DTC changes
Dynamic Traction Control is a stability-control setting, separate from the mechanical and electronic torque management performed by ALL4. In normal DSC operation, the car intervenes quickly when it detects wheelspin or a loss of directional stability. DTC allows more wheel slip before intervention. On a loose surface, that can let a driven wheel keep turning long enough to clear material and build forward momentum instead of having its power reduced immediately.
The 2024 Countryman (F60) manual lists DTC as useful in exceptional situations including slush, uncleared snow, driving off from deep snow or loose ground, and using snow chains. It also states the trade-off plainly: DTC provides maximum traction with limited stability during acceleration and cornering. You must therefore regard DTC as a short-duration aid for getting moving, not as a safer setting for normal road driving or for carrying speed through a bend.

Preparation matters more than a button press. Check the following before you leave a maintained road:

- Confirm the vehicle manual. Identify the Countryman generation, model year, market and fitted equipment. Button location, symbols, warning lamps and the exact DTC behavior can change. Use the digital manual for your vehicle through MINI USA’s owner-manual portal or the MINI Canada owner-manual page.
- Inspect the tires. Verify the approved tire size, load rating and speed rating for your car, and check for damage or uneven wear. Do not assume that an all-season tire is an off-road tire or that a tire fitted to another Countryman is approved for yours.
- Check the surface and exit. Look for hidden ruts, rocks, soft shoulders, drainage channels and a firm route back to the road. If you cannot identify a safe exit, do not commit the vehicle merely because ALL4 is fitted.
- Secure the cabin and cargo. Loose items can shift when the car pitches or stops. Keep visibility clear and make sure passengers understand that the vehicle may move abruptly if a wheel suddenly finds grip.
- Use appropriate recovery planning. Carry only equipment you know how to use and that is compatible with the Countryman’s approved recovery points. The cited MINI material does not establish a universal recovery procedure, towing load, water depth or slope limit, so obtain those instructions for your exact vehicle before attempting a recovery.
How to use ALL4 and DTC: a practical sequence
1. Approach slowly with normal DSC active
Start in the normal stability-control setting. Reduce speed before the loose section, straighten the wheels where possible and apply the accelerator progressively. Let ALL4 respond automatically rather than trying to provoke wheelspin. A smooth approach gives the system and the tires a better chance of finding consistent grip.
2. Let the car attempt the first move normally
If the Countryman moves forward without repeated wheelspin, continue with small steering and throttle inputs. Avoid abrupt throttle openings: they can spin the surface away from the tread, make the car yaw and leave you with less usable grip. Keep both hands ready for a change in direction if one side of the car reaches firmer ground before the other.

When the wheels spin and the car is not gaining momentum on loose ground, stop attempting to force progress with more throttle. Consult your vehicle’s manual for the control. On the 2024 F60 manual edition, pressing the DTC button activates the “TRACTION” mode and illuminates the DSC OFF indicator light. The manual specifically associates this aid with situations such as deep snow, loose ground, slush and snow chains. Do not assume the button is in the same place or uses the same wording on another generation.
4. Move off gently while DTC is active
With the vehicle pointed along your intended path, apply only enough throttle to maintain forward motion. Expect some wheel slip; that is the reason for activating DTC. Keep steering inputs gradual and avoid a fast lane change, sharp bend or sudden lift of the accelerator. The 2024 manual’s warning about limited stability during acceleration and cornering applies while you are using the setting.
5. Turn DTC off when the exceptional surface ends
Once the car has reached a firm surface or has regained steady momentum, return to the normal stability-control setting according to your manual. For the 2024 F60 procedure, pressing the DTC button again switches off “TRACTION” and the associated indicator. If a warning remains, the message does not match your manual, or the system will not change state, stop and consult the vehicle documentation or a MINI service professional rather than continuing to experiment on loose terrain.

Surface-by-surface guidance
Loose sand
Sand can absorb momentum quickly, especially when the vehicle is stopped. The early Countryman material specifically mentions moving off on loose sand as a situation in which the ALL4 concept may be useful. Approach with momentum that remains controllable, avoid sharp steering and use a steady accelerator. If the car cannot pull away and your manual permits DTC for this type of low-traction start, activate it briefly and concentrate on a straight, gentle departure. Do not interpret the historical beach reference as permission to drive on every beach; local access rules, tides and surface conditions are separate safety issues.
Deep snow and slush
The 2024 manual names deep snow, slush and uncleared snow among the situations in which DTC may help. Clear snow from around the tires where practical, keep the wheels as straight as possible and use measured throttle. DTC may allow the tires to keep turning rather than having power cut immediately. Once the car is moving reliably, return to normal stability control. The manual does not provide a universal snow depth, speed or stopping-distance limit, so do not invent one from the presence of ALL4.
Wet grass, a field or a muddy shoulder
Wet grass and a field can look firm while hiding soft soil. The 2010 launch description used parking in a field as an everyday example, but it was a historical characterization of the early Countryman and not a current capability guarantee. Walk the route if safe, avoid damaging the ground, and do not enter private or restricted land without permission. If the surface offers little resistance and the vehicle begins to sink, spinning the tires can make the situation worse. Use DTC only when your manual identifies the circumstance as appropriate, and stop rather than digging deeper.
Snow chains
The 2024 manual includes snow-chain use among the exceptional situations associated with DTC. Fit chains only in the locations, sizes and conditions approved for your vehicle, and follow the chain manufacturer’s instructions. Confirm clearance around the wheel and suspension before moving. DTC does not replace correct chain fitment, and the cited material does not establish a universal chain speed or a single fitment position for every Countryman.
Stability limits you must respect
DTC’s benefit is controlled wheel slip; its cost is reduced stability intervention. That matters most when you combine acceleration with steering. A tire that is spinning on a loose shoulder can suddenly bite into firmer ground, causing a change in direction. Similarly, lifting off abruptly or turning sharply can make the vehicle’s response less predictable while DTC is active.

- Use small steering corrections instead of sawing at the wheel.
- Do not use DTC to drive faster through bends, to make an unstable surface safe, or to compensate for worn or unsuitable tires.
- Deactivate the setting when the exceptional low-traction start is over, following your manual’s procedure.
- If the car is sliding sideways, approaching an obstacle or losing ground clearance, stop the attempt and reassess rather than adding throttle.
MINI’s cited manuals and product material do not publish a universal safe speed, maximum slope, water-depth limit, tire-pressure adjustment or recovery recipe for loose terrain. Those figures depend on the exact vehicle, tires, surface and local conditions. Use only limits stated for your own Countryman by an authoritative source.

ALL4 cannot create grip that the tires and surface do not provide. A tire must be correctly sized and rated for the vehicle, inflated according to the vehicle’s instructions and in good condition. The 2025 MINI USA product guides list all-season tires as equipment on specified Countryman ALL4 trims, including the Countryman SE ALL4 and Countryman S ALL4 guides. That identifies factory equipment for those listed vehicles; it does not make the tires dedicated off-road tires or establish that the same equipment is fitted to every market or model year. Review the guides for context at the 2025 Countryman SE ALL4 product guide and the 2025 Countryman S ALL4 product guide.
Before buying replacements, read the tire placard and owner’s manual for your individual car. Match the approved size and load rating, and confirm whether your market permits the proposed wheel-and-tire combination. Do not lower or raise pressure based on a generic off-road recommendation; the supplied MINI material does not establish one pressure for loose terrain.
How to identify the correct DTC instructions
- Record the vehicle’s model year and generation, then note whether it is a Countryman ALL4, plug-in hybrid or another configuration.
- Open the official manual portal for your market. In the United States, use MINI USA’s owner-manual search; in Canada, use MINI Canada’s owner-manual page.
- Search the manual for “DTC,” “Dynamic Traction Control,” “TRACTION,” “DSC” and “snow chains.”
- Confirm the activation method, indicator message and deactivation method printed for your vehicle.
- Read the warnings in the same section, especially those concerning limited stability during acceleration and cornering.
The 2024 F60 manual is available as a specific archived edition at MINI’s 2024 Countryman Owner’s Manual PDF. Use it only when it matches your vehicle’s generation and equipment. The title “Countryman ALL4” alone is not enough to establish the correct button layout.

Troubleshooting common situations
The car spins its wheels but does not move
Stop adding throttle. Straighten the wheels, remove loose material from in front of the tires if it is safe, and check whether the car is resting on its underside. If the surface is one of the low-traction situations named in your manual, use the prescribed DTC procedure for a gentle attempt. If the tires continue to dig in, stop before the vehicle becomes more deeply stuck and use an appropriate, approved recovery plan.

DTC activates but the vehicle feels unstable
Reduce speed, minimize steering and throttle inputs and return to normal stability control when you are clear of the exceptional surface. DTC is expected to reduce stability intervention; that is not a fault by itself. Continued instability, a warning that remains illuminated or behavior that differs from the manual warrants professional inspection.
The button or message in my car does not match the 2024 instructions
Do not copy the F60 sequence. Countryman generations and markets can use different controls and displays. Retrieve the manual for your VIN or exact model specification and follow that procedure. If you cannot confirm the setting, leave the vehicle in normal operation and seek assistance rather than guessing.
ALL4 is fitted, but the car still cannot climb the surface
ALL4 distributes available torque; it does not guarantee traction, clearance or a particular slope capability. A soft surface, unsuitable tires, an obstacle under the vehicle or insufficient momentum can defeat any all-wheel-drive system. Back out along the route you entered if possible, avoid wheelspin and use only recovery points and methods approved for your Countryman.

ALL4 is valuable when changing grip makes a front-wheel-drive layout struggle: it can vary front/rear torque automatically and work with stability electronics to keep the vehicle moving. DTC can add a useful, temporary allowance for wheel slip when pulling away from loose ground. Those functions are meaningful aids for snow-covered roads, slush, loose sand and similar everyday conditions.
They do not turn a Countryman into a dedicated trail vehicle, provide a selectable low range, remove the need for suitable tires or make acceleration and cornering safe on a marginal surface. No relevant published statistic in the cited MINI sources establishes a traction percentage, slope limit, water depth, ground-clearance guarantee or off-road test result. Judge each route by the actual surface, weather, tires, visibility and escape path, and follow the manual for your exact vehicle.
