If neither is available, contact roadside assistance or a qualified automotive locksmith. There is no single unlocking procedure for every Honda: the correct steps depend on the model year and equipment.
What to do during a Honda lockout
- Check for a spare key. If someone can bring it, this avoids forcing entry or risking damage.
- Check the exact owner’s manual. Some Honda keyless-access vehicles have a built-in emergency key that can unlock the driver’s door. Follow the manual for your model and year; do not assume every Honda has the same key or door-cylinder procedure.
- Call roadside assistance or a qualified automotive locksmith. Honda’s roadside-assistance document describes unlocking help when keys are lost, broken, or locked inside. Its stated service scope is 24-hour assistance in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico during the described three-year/36,000-mile warranty term for covered 2015-and-later vehicles. The document is historical, so check current terms and your own eligibility before relying on coverage: Honda roadside assistance document.
Avoid trying to pry open the door or use an improvised tool. If you cannot confirm a safe, model-specific method, have a professional handle the lockout.
If the Honda remote will not unlock the doors
Check the owner’s manual for the exact vehicle. In its 2024 CR-V Hybrid manual, Honda directs drivers to use the built-in key if the keyless remote’s unlock button does not work: insert the key into the door-handle cylinder and turn it. On the configuration described, the first turn unlocks the driver’s door; turning it again within a few seconds unlocks the remaining doors and tailgate. This sequence is specific to the documented configuration, not a universal Honda procedure: 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid owner’s manual.
Honda’s general description of remote unlocking says that on the systems covered, one press unlocks the driver’s door and a second press unlocks the other doors. The page also notes key-cylinder behavior on select models. Check whether your own model and trim have those features: Honda remote features.

Can a Honda unlock itself if the key is inside?
Some configurations have lockout protection, but it is not established as a feature on every Honda. The 2024 CR-V owner’s manual describes a system that may beep, flash some exterior lights, show a message, and unlock the doors when the vehicle cannot detect its keyless remote. If no door is opened, all doors relock after 15 seconds. Check your specific manual to confirm whether your vehicle has this feature and how it behaves: 2024 Honda CR-V Hybrid owner’s manual.
Honda’s manual also advises: “Before locking a door, make sure that the key is not inside the vehicle.”

How to prevent another lockout
- Keep an accessible spare. Store it somewhere secure outside the vehicle, or with someone you can reach.
- Replace a failing remote promptly. Before buying a key or fob, match it to the exact model year, trim, and key system. A replacement fob by itself will not open a car when the only working key is locked inside.
- Verify the service needed. The cited Honda materials do not establish replacement-key compatibility, programming requirements, or whether a dealer or locksmith must program a particular key. Confirm those details for your vehicle before ordering.
- Learn the emergency-key procedure in advance. If your Honda has a physical key concealed in the remote, check the owner’s manual for how to access it and use it on the driver’s door.
