There is no universal switch for an electric SUV’s exterior pedestrian warning. The menu, available choices, and whether a pause is allowed depend on the exact make, model year, build date, software version, equipment and market. Identify those details first, then use the matching owner’s manual. Some vehicles offer a one-drive pause, some let you choose a low-speed sound, and some provide no driver-accessible customization.
First identify the sound and the exact vehicle
The low-speed sound heard outside an electric SUV may be called a pedestrian warning sound, pedestrian alert, Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System (AVAS) or Approaching Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians (VSP). Manufacturers do not use these names consistently. It is an exterior alert intended for people near the vehicle, not the same as a seat-belt reminder, parking-sensor tone, lane-departure warning or other sound played through the cabin speakers.

A humming or electronic tone that changes with vehicle speed can be the exterior system, but sound heard inside the cabin is not enough to identify it. Ask another person to stand at a safe distance while the vehicle moves slowly in an appropriate, controlled area, or consult the manual’s description. Never test by driving toward someone or by disabling safety systems on a public road.

| Make and model | Menu names and hardware differ between vehicles that appear similar. |
| Model year and build date | A control can exist on an earlier production run and disappear on a later one. |
| Market or country | Type-approval rules and manual editions vary by jurisdiction. |
| Software version | An over-the-air update can move, rename or remove a menu. |
| Trim and equipment | A pause switch may only appear on vehicles fitted with the relevant speaker and control. |
| Manual edition | Use the manual written for that vehicle identification number or market, not a similarly named SUV. |
Have the vehicle identification number available if the manufacturer’s support site asks for it. If the on-screen labels do not match the manual, stop and verify the market, production date and software before changing anything.

Why electric SUVs make an exterior sound
An electric motor can propel a vehicle quietly at low speed. The warning sound gives pedestrians and other road users an audible indication that a vehicle is approaching, especially when they cannot see it or are focused on another task. It is intended for people outside the SUV; turning down a cabin chime does not turn down this system.
Regulation (EU) No 540/2014 describes automatic sound from vehicle start-up to approximately 20 km/h and while reversing. It also describes an accessible switch that defaults to on after the vehicle is restarted and allows attenuation during operation. A later delegated amendment permits manufacturers to offer different sounds when those sounds meet the applicable requirements. UN Regulation No. 138 likewise requires every alternate driver-selectable sound to comply with the requirements.
Those provisions explain why a persistent “off” setting may not be offered. They do not create one menu path for every electric SUV, nor do they establish the same controls in every country or for every vehicle age. Type-approval dates, market rules and the vehicle’s equipment determine what is legal and what the manufacturer exposes to the driver.

- Confirm the vehicle identity. Write down the model, model year, build date if known, market, trim and current software version.
- Open the correct owner’s manual. Search its index or digital text for “pedestrian warning,” “pedestrian alert,” “AVAS,” “VSP,” “low-speed sound,” “approaching vehicle sound” and “external sound.” Manufacturers may use only one of these terms.
- Follow only the controls actually documented. A manual may describe a temporary pause, a sound-selection menu, a fault indicator or no driver control at all. Do not infer a setting from another model.
- Check what the action changes. Determine whether it pauses the alert for the current drive, selects another compliant sound, attenuates it only in a permitted condition or changes a different cabin warning.
- Read the reset instruction and restore the alert. Many documented pause functions return to on at the next power-on. If you used a permitted temporary pause, reactivate the alert as soon as the reason for pausing has ended.
If the manual does not describe a control, treat the absence as intentional. Do not search for hidden service menus or aftermarket workarounds.
Documented examples: what particular SUVs allow
The following examples show why a universal instruction would be misleading. They are model- and manual-specific, not a promise that every vehicle in the same brand or model family has the same option.

The Model Y manual describes an exterior sound below approximately 33 km/h (21 mph) and whenever the vehicle is in reverse. For vehicles manufactured before approximately November 2021, the documented path is Controls > Safety > Pedestrian Warning > Pause.
That control pauses the warning for the current drive. The system turns on again at the next drive, so it is not a stored, permanent mute. Later vehicles may not display the switch at all. If the menu is missing, do not assume the vehicle is faulty; confirm the build date, equipment and current manual.
Tesla cautions that pedestrians may not notice the vehicle if the sound cannot be heard and recommends service when the system does not work. A missing sound during the conditions in which the manual says it should operate is therefore a service issue, not an invitation to search for a louder or quieter setting.

Tesla Model X
The cited Model X manual describes the sound below approximately 24 km/h (15 mph) and in reverse. On an equipped vehicle, the pause control is under Controls > Safety > Pedestrian Warning. The exact manual edition and vehicle equipment matter; not every Model X will show the same control.
The manual warns against pausing the alert where pedestrians may be present and says to turn it back on when the need to pause has passed. Treat the control as a short-lived exception, not a convenience setting for normal driving.
MG ZS EV
One MG ZS EV manual edition, hosted by a third party rather than on MG’s official site, describes a sound menu at Application Center > Personalized Sound Effects > Low Speed Prompt Sound. In that edition, the driver can disable the function or select other effects.
The same instructions say the sound returns at the next power-on and caution that temporary disabling should be used only when no pedestrians are nearby and the area is open. Because the copy is hosted by a third party and its market edition is not clear, use it only as an example. Verify the menu and behavior in the manual supplied with your own ZS EV or through the manufacturer’s support channel.
Nissan ARIYA
The UK ARIYA manual calls the system Approaching Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians (VSP). Its relevant guidance is fault-related: contact a Nissan-certified EV dealer if the sound cannot be heard while the system is operating or if the VSP OFF indicator is illuminated.

That instruction does not establish a general sound-selection or volume-control path. An illuminated indicator or unexpectedly silent vehicle should be diagnosed according to the vehicle’s manual rather than treated as a customization opportunity.
Pause, sound selection and no control are different outcomes
| What the manual may provide | What it does | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Temporary pause | Stops the exterior alert for a limited period, often the current drive. | Whether it is allowed only in particular conditions, whether an indicator appears and whether it resets at the next start. |
| Selectable sounds | Changes the acoustic character while retaining an alert. | That every listed sound is an approved option for that vehicle and market; do not substitute a personal audio file. |
| Attenuation | Reduces the sound in a condition allowed by the applicable rules. | Whether attenuation is temporary and whether the default-on behavior returns after restart. |
| No user setting | Leaves the system under automatic control. | Whether an apparently missing menu is normal for the production version or requires dealer confirmation. |
A setting for “warning volume,” “chime volume” or “parking assist volume” generally concerns sounds inside the cabin or sensor alerts. It should not be assumed to change the external pedestrian system. Use the exact wording in the manual to identify which speaker and function a control affects.
What not to do
- Do not unplug, cover, move or modify the exterior speaker. That removes or alters an alert intended for people outside the vehicle and can create a fault.
- Do not rely on a hidden fuse, coding change or unofficial software tweak. It may defeat required equipment, create diagnostic errors or leave the vehicle in a condition the manufacturer did not approve.
- Do not assume a setting persists. A pause that appears to work once may be designed to reset on the next power-on.
- Do not use a pause around pedestrians, cyclists or other vulnerable road users. If the reason for pausing is no longer present, restore the alert immediately.
- Do not use another model’s instructions. Even two SUVs with the same badge can have different build dates, software and equipment.
Troubleshoot an unexpectedly silent or faulty system
The sound is absent at low speed or in reverse
Check the manual’s operating conditions first. Some systems sound only below a stated speed or while reversing. If the vehicle is within those conditions and the exterior alert remains absent, look for a warning message or a VSP/AVAS indicator. Follow the manufacturer’s service procedure and arrange an authorized inspection; do not attempt a speaker repair based only on an internet description.
A warning indicator says the system is off
An indicator can mean a documented temporary pause, a driver-selected state or a fault, depending on the vehicle. Read the indicator definition in the exact manual. If it is not a state you intentionally selected, contact the manufacturer or an authorized EV service provider.

Recheck the model year, build date, market and software version. The Tesla Model Y example shows that a control can be documented for vehicles built before approximately November 2021 and absent on later vehicles. A market-specific manual can also use different labels or omit a control that another market receives. Do not treat a missing menu as permission to alter the hardware.

The sound seems too loud inside the cabin
First establish whether the sound is actually external. Ask someone outside to identify where it is heard while the SUV moves at a safe, very low speed in a controlled location. If only the cabin is affected, inspect the settings for audio alerts, parking sensors and driver assistance rather than the pedestrian-warning section. If the outside alert is abnormal as well, request a technical inspection.
How the restart rule protects against a permanent mute
Where a pause function is installed, the cited European rules describe it as temporary, require a clear indication to the driver and require reactivation when the vehicle is started again. They also call for the owner’s manual to explain the effect. That is why a control can appear to work until the vehicle is switched off, then return to its normal state.
The practical consequence is simple: after any permitted pause, assume the alert must be checked again at the next start and confirm the indicator has cleared. Never promise that a setting will remain off unless the exact manual explicitly documents that behavior—and a persistent off state may not be offered at all.
Choosing the right next step
- You want less annoyance from a normal sound: identify the exterior system and look for a documented selectable-sound or attenuation menu. If none exists, leave the system unchanged.
- You need a short pause for a specific, controlled situation: use only a manufacturer-documented pause, only where pedestrians are not present, and restore it immediately afterward.
- You want to silence the sound permanently: do not modify the speaker or software. The available evidence does not support a universal permanent-off procedure, and the alert’s purpose is safety for people outside the SUV.
- The sound has stopped unexpectedly: treat it as a possible malfunction, check the manual’s indicator guidance and arrange authorized inspection.
- You are buying or importing a used electric SUV: ask for the vehicle’s market, build date, manual edition and software version before assuming a control shown in an online discussion will be present.
Bottom line for electric-SUV owners
Find the exact owner’s manual before changing anything. “Pedestrian warning,” “pedestrian alert,” AVAS and VSP describe related exterior systems, but the control may be a one-drive pause, a choice among approved sounds or no driver-accessible setting. Documented examples include a pre-November-2021 Tesla Model Y pause, an equipped Tesla Model X pause, and a market-specific MG ZS EV low-speed sound menu; a Nissan ARIYA manual instead emphasizes dealer diagnosis for an absent sound or illuminated VSP OFF indicator. These examples cannot be generalized to every electric SUV.
Keep the alert available for people outside the vehicle, restore any permitted pause after use and have an unexpectedly silent or fault-indicating system inspected by the manufacturer or an authorized EV service provider.
