How to Turn Off Ads and Promotional Notifications in Your Car’s Infotainment System

A practical guide to stopping personalized infotainment ads, automaker marketing messages, and companion-app push notifications without accidentally disabling essential connected services.

There is no single switch that removes every advertisement from every car. First identify where the message appears: an app on the infotainment screen, an automaker connected-services account, or a phone notification. Google built-in systems let you delete or reset the advertising ID used for personalized ads, while automaker and phone alerts are controlled separately. Disabling connected services can also remove useful features and updates, so change the narrowest setting that solves the interruption.

Identify the type of message before changing settings

The same-looking promotion can come from different systems. A banner inside a music, navigation, charging, or other app is governed by that app and the infotainment platform. A service-renewal reminder or roadside-assistance offer may come from the automaker’s connected-services account. A message that appears only on your phone is a mobile-app notification, even if it concerns the car.

Where you see it Likely source First control to check Typical scope
On the car display inside an app Infotainment platform or the individual app Google advertising-ID controls, if the car uses Google built-in; otherwise the app’s own settings Usually one driver profile or one app; it may not remove all ads
In a vehicle or connected-services message center Automaker account Message, marketing, or communication preferences in the account Often the account or vehicle, depending on the automaker
As a banner, sound, or badge on your phone Automaker companion app Phone notification permissions and the app’s notification categories The phone and its signed-in app account
After enabling a privacy or connectivity mode Vehicle-wide connected-services controls The vehicle’s privacy or connected-services menu Potentially many services; safety exceptions vary by manufacturer

Take a screenshot or note the exact wording before changing anything. “Ads,” “offers,” “service reminders,” and “security alerts” may be separate categories. Turning off marketing does not necessarily turn off safety or maintenance messages.

Google built-in: control personalized advertising in the car

Google built-in has a documented control for the advertising ID used by apps installed in the vehicle. It is a privacy and personalization setting, not a master ad blocker. Google’s guidance states: “Important: You can’t turn off ads on the apps in your car, but you can control the use of your advertising ID for personalized ads across apps installed in your car.”

Open the advertising settings

  1. Turn on the infotainment system and select the driver profile whose settings you want to change.
  2. Open Settings on the car display.
  3. Select Google.
  4. Select Ads.
  5. Choose Delete advertising ID if you want apps to stop using that advertising ID for ad personalization.
  6. Choose Reset advertising ID instead if you want to replace the existing identifier with a new one.
  7. Repeat the change for every driver profile that needs it. Google documents these controls per profile, so changing one profile does not automatically change another.

Delete versus reset

Choice What it does What it does not do When to use it
Delete advertising ID Removes the advertising identifier used for personalized advertising in supported car apps. Does not guarantee that an app will display no ads, and does not control automaker account messages or phone notifications. Use when you do not want that identifier used for personalization.
Reset advertising ID Replaces the current advertising identifier with a new one. Does not permanently suppress advertising; apps can still show promotions and may use other information. Use when you want to break the association with the old identifier without deleting the function entirely.

Why ads can continue after deletion

Google says apps in the car may continue sending ads. An app can use information shared with it or other factors instead of the deleted identifier, and the app may have its own advertising controls. After deleting the ID, test the specific app that displayed the promotion. If the same message remains, look for that app’s account, privacy, or notification settings rather than repeating the vehicle-wide change.

If Settings > Google > Ads is missing, the vehicle may not use Google built-in, the feature may be restricted by the market or software version, or the menu may be exposed under a manufacturer-specific profile. Do not assume that a similarly named “Google” option on a phone changes the car; the setting must be opened on the vehicle display.

Turn off promotional messages in the automaker account

Connected-services promotions are usually tied to the account registered to the vehicle, not to the infotainment advertising ID. Sign in to the automaker’s connected-services website or app and look for communication preferences, marketing choices, message settings, or individual service toggles. The exact labels and available categories differ by make, model year, country, subscription, and software version.

A safe account-level procedure

  1. Open the connected-services account associated with the vehicle.
  2. Confirm that you are editing the correct vehicle and primary account; a second driver or family account can have separate preferences.
  3. Open the account’s notification, communication, privacy, or marketing-preference page.
  4. Disable promotional offers and marketing messages individually where possible. Leave security, collision, maintenance, recall, and roadside-alert categories enabled unless you have a specific reason to change them.
  5. Save the changes, then sign out and back in to confirm that the preference persisted.
  6. Allow time for the vehicle and account to synchronize. A message already queued in the car may remain until it expires or is dismissed.

Chrysler documents opting out of certain connected-services features and notifications through the connected-services account. That example shows why an account-level control is preferable to shutting down every connected function: you can target the communication category when the manufacturer supports that choice.

Do not confuse marketing opt-out with service deactivation

An account may offer both a narrow marketing choice and a broad “deactivate connected services” option. They are not equivalent. Use the narrow opt-out first. Broad deactivation can stop most connected features and may affect access to the in-vehicle manual and over-the-air updates, according to Chrysler’s connected-services information. Read the confirmation screen and terms for your exact vehicle before accepting.

Stop promotional push notifications on your phone

If the alert appears on the phone rather than the car screen, change the phone’s notification permission for the automaker’s companion app. The menu names differ between operating-system versions, but the sequence is consistent:

  1. Open the phone’s system Settings.
  2. Open Notifications (or the equivalent app-notification section).
  3. Select the automaker’s app.
  4. Turn off promotional, offers, campaigns, or marketing categories if they are listed separately. If categories are not separated, you may need to disable all notifications for that app and then rely on email or in-app checking for important updates.
  5. Open the app itself and inspect its account or communication preferences; an app-level setting can re-enable categories after an update or sign-in.

Maserati’s guidance describes blocking or limiting promotional push content through device notification permissions or content settings. This is a phone-level control: it does not remove an offer displayed inside the car’s infotainment app, and it does not change another driver’s phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep safety and vehicle-status alerts enabled when the app distinguishes them from promotions. If categories are unclear, disable only the category whose wording matches the unwanted message, then monitor the app for a few days rather than silencing every alert immediately.

Understand privacy modes and connected-service shutdowns

Some vehicles provide a privacy mode or a master connected-services switch. These controls can reduce server communication and promotional contact, but they can also disable navigation data, remote commands, location sharing, concierge functions, subscription checks, and update delivery. The effect is manufacturer- and vehicle-specific.

Porsche’s privacy-mode information illustrates the distinction: Connect services are restricted when privacy mode is activated, while specified theft-protection or accident-notification safety features remain active. That exception is not a promise for other manufacturers. Read your vehicle’s privacy-mode description to see which emergency, security, or legal functions remain enabled.

Checklist before enabling a broad privacy mode

  • Record which remote functions you currently use, such as locking, charging, climate control, or location.
  • Check whether the infotainment system receives over-the-air updates through the connected service.
  • Read the list of retained safety and emergency functions; do not infer it from another model or brand.
  • Note how to reverse the setting if you need a remote feature or an update later.
  • Tell other authorized drivers that the change may affect their profiles and phone apps.

A practical workflow for any make or model

  1. Classify the interruption. Decide whether it is inside a car app, in the vehicle’s message center, or on a phone.
  2. Identify the system. Check the vehicle’s information screen, owner’s manual, or support page for the infotainment platform and software version.
  3. Change the narrowest setting. For Google built-in, use Settings > Google > Ads. For account messages, edit communication preferences. For phone alerts, edit app notifications.
  4. Test the original trigger. Reopen the same app or wait for the same type of account alert. A different ad does not prove that the first control failed.
  5. Escalate only when necessary. If a narrow setting is unavailable, review the manufacturer’s privacy or connected-services controls and their consequences before using them.
  6. Document the final state. Note which profile, account, phone, and vehicle setting changed so you can restore one item without undoing unrelated privacy choices.

Troubleshooting common outcomes

The ad is still visible in the car

Deleting the Google advertising ID limits personalization; it does not promise an ad-free display. Check whether the message is generated by the individual app, then inspect that app’s account or privacy settings. If the message is an automaker offer rather than an in-app ad, return to the connected-services account.

Only one driver stopped seeing the promotion

Google advertising controls apply to each user profile. Repeat the change while the other profile is active. Account and phone notifications can also be tied to separate sign-ins, so verify the account email and the device receiving the alert.

The vehicle stopped receiving useful updates

You may have deactivated connected services rather than opting out of marketing. Review the vehicle’s connected-services status and the manufacturer’s reactivation instructions. Chrysler warns that broad deactivation can affect over-the-air updates and access to the in-vehicle manual; similar effects should be checked for other vehicles before restoring or repeating the setting.

A phone alert returns after an app update

Updates can add or re-enable notification categories, and signing out can reset app preferences. Recheck the phone’s app-notification page and the app’s communication settings. If the alert is required for an account or safety function, the app may not offer a separate promotional toggle.

The menu path does not match these instructions

Exact menus vary by make, model year, market, infotainment platform, and software release. Use the owner’s manual or the automaker’s support site for the vehicle identification and software version, and search for terms such as “advertising ID,” “marketing preferences,” “promotional notifications,” “privacy mode,” or “connected services.” Do not apply a path from another model simply because the screen looks similar.

Choose the smallest change that meets your goal

Your goal Best first action Remaining limitations
Reduce personalized ads in apps on a Google-built-in display Delete the advertising ID for each affected profile. Apps may still show ads using other information or their own systems.
Start fresh without deleting advertising-ID functionality Reset the advertising ID for each affected profile. Future personalization and ads can continue.
Stop automaker sales and subscription offers Disable promotional categories in the connected-services account. Availability and scope depend on the manufacturer and account.
Stop banners or sounds from a phone app Change that app’s notification permissions and categories on the phone. You may also silence useful vehicle-status alerts if categories are combined.
Limit data-connected communication throughout the vehicle Review privacy mode or connected-services deactivation. Remote functions, manuals, updates, and other services may stop; safety exceptions vary.

Requirements and pitfalls to check first

Have the vehicle’s make, model year, market, and infotainment software version available before troubleshooting. Those details determine whether Google built-in is present and whether a manufacturer exposes separate controls. You may also need the primary connected-services login, access to each driver profile, and the phone signed in to the companion app. Without the correct account or profile, a change can appear to work while leaving another user’s alerts untouched.

Do not treat every unwanted message as an advertisement. A recall, collision warning, roadside alert, maintenance notice, theft notification, or subscription-expiration message may be operational rather than promotional. Read the wording and category before silencing it. If the system combines marketing and useful alerts, there may be no selective switch; disabling all notifications then carries a greater risk of missing important information.

A queued message can remain visible after a preference change, and an app can show a different promotion even when the original targeting has stopped. Test the same trigger, not merely a new screen. Also check both the vehicle account and the companion phone app: changing one does not automatically change the other.

Is replacement hardware a solution?

Replacing the head unit, adding an accessory, or buying a generic “ad blocker” is not a manufacturer-independent way to stop connected-services promotions. The interruption is normally controlled by the vehicle profile, app, automaker account, or phone permission. A model-specific owner’s manual and the automaker’s support channel are more appropriate when the menu is missing. Do not buy hardware before identifying the message source and confirming that the vehicle actually supports a setting for it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to contact the automaker

Contact support when the account shows no communication controls, the vehicle has a documented privacy mode but no explanation of retained safety functions, or a preference repeatedly changes back. Provide the make, model year, market, software version, account type, and a screenshot of the message. Ask whether the alert is marketing, a service notice, or a safety notification, and whether it can be separated from other categories. This avoids asking support to disable a broad service when a narrower opt-out exists.

Final verification checklist

  • Confirm the source: in-car app, vehicle message center, automaker account, or phone.
  • Apply the setting while the affected profile and account are active.
  • Record whether you deleted or reset a Google advertising ID, changed a marketing category, or disabled phone notifications.
  • Retest the original message path.
  • Verify that remote functions, manuals, updates, and safety alerts still work as expected.
  • Tell other drivers which profile or account was changed.

For vehicles without Google built-in, there is no evidence of a universal, manufacturer-independent ad-off control. The reliable route is to identify the source, use the account or device setting that owns it, and consult the vehicle-specific manual before changing connectivity for the whole car.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I eliminate this ad for connected services?

Sometimes you can opt out of a promotional category in the automaker’s connected-services account. That does not guarantee removal of every in-car ad, because app advertising and account messages use different controls.

Does deleting the Google advertising ID turn off all ads?

No. Google says apps in the car may continue to show ads using other information or factors. Deletion limits use of that advertising ID for personalized advertising.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I delete or reset the advertising ID?

Delete it when you do not want the identifier used for personalization. Reset it when you want a new identifier while keeping the advertising-ID function. Neither choice is a universal ad blocker.

Will changing one driver profile affect everyone?

Google documents advertising-ID controls per profile, so repeat the change for each profile. Automaker accounts and phone apps can also have separate sign-ins and notification settings.

Why can’t I find Settings > Google > Ads?

The vehicle may not use Google built-in, the feature may vary by market or software version, or the manufacturer may expose a different menu. Check the vehicle display, owner’s manual, and automaker support page.

Will privacy mode stop useful vehicle features?

It can. Depending on the vehicle, privacy mode or connected-services deactivation may restrict remote commands, location sharing, concierge functions, manuals, or over-the-air updates. Porsche documents safety exceptions for specified theft-protection and accident-notification functions, but other brands may differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I stop promotions on my phone without losing safety alerts?

Open the phone’s notification settings for the automaker app and disable only promotional categories when they are separated. If categories are combined, silencing all notifications may also remove useful vehicle-status or safety alerts.

Do I need a new head unit or accessory to remove these messages?

No generic hardware solution is established for this problem. Identify the source and use the vehicle, account, app, or phone setting that controls it; use a model-specific manual when the menu is unclear.

The Bottom Line

Start with the message source, then change only the setting that owns it. On Google built-in, Settings > Google > Ads lets each profile delete or reset its advertising ID, but apps may still display ads. Automaker promotions belong in connected-services communication preferences, and phone banners belong in the companion app’s notification settings. Treat privacy mode and service deactivation as last resorts because they can restrict remote features, manuals, updates, and other connected functions.
