1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsStart by identifying which SRAM drivetrain is on the bike: conventional Eagle AXS, Eagle Transmission, or Eagle Powertrain. Their batteries, pairing methods and mechanical setup are different. For a sudden no-shift fault, wake the system, check the derailleur and controller power, then re-pair every component. For poor shifting after a strike, use the Eagle Transmission alignment and setup procedure rather than treating it like a conventional AXS derailleur.
The sequence below separates electrical faults from temperature-related shift rejection, pairing problems and changed Transmission setup. It also identifies when a dealer or SRAM Rider Support should take over.

Identify the drivetrain before changing anything
Look at the derailleur and the bike’s control system before following a procedure. SRAM uses the AXS name across several generations, but the correct fix depends on the component family.
Conventional Eagle AXS
A standard Eagle AXS derailleur has a removable rechargeable AXS battery. Its controller uses a separate coin-cell battery. This is the arrangement covered by the general AXS troubleshooting process.

Eagle Transmission
Eagle Transmission is the newer, frame-integrated derailleur design. It uses bike-specific installation values, including a specified chain length, Setup Cog and Setup Key position. A crash or rock strike can rotate the derailleur or its knurled ring, so post-impact shifting requires the Transmission alignment and reset procedure.
Eagle Powertrain
On an Eagle Powertrain e-MTB, the e-bike system battery powers the Transmission derailleur. Check the battery and derailleur status on the bike’s display or in the AXS app rather than looking for a removable derailleur battery. The controller still needs its own coin cell where fitted.
| Drivetrain family | Derailleur power source | Most relevant first checks | Mechanical setup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conventional Eagle AXS | Removable rechargeable AXS battery | Derailleur LED, controller coin cell, wake-up, pairing and firmware | Use the standard Eagle AXS procedure; do not apply Transmission-only steps |
| Eagle Transmission | Removable AXS battery unless integrated into a Powertrain system | Battery or system status, pairing, rejected-shift indication and impact alignment | Chain length, Setup Cog, Setup Key, alignment marks and 35 N⋅m derailleur torque |
| Eagle Powertrain | E-bike system battery powers the Transmission derailleur | Display or app status, controller coin cell, wake-up and pairing | Transmission procedure for the exact model |
If you cannot identify the generation, stop before loosening hardware or changing setup values. A dealer can identify the derailleur from its model and serial information and select the correct SRAM procedure.
Quick symptom triage
Classify the failure before touching adjustment. A completely dark system points first to power, while a lit system that does not move points to wake-up, pairing or firmware. A red-and-green Transmission indication is a deliberate rejected-shift signal, not automatically a failed motor. Shifting that changed immediately after a crash or rock hit is primarily a mechanical-position question.
| Symptom | Most likely category | First safe action |
|---|---|---|
| No LED from the derailleur or controller | Battery, coin-cell contact or sleeping component | Wake the bike, then charge, replace or reseat the applicable power source |
| LEDs show charge but there is no actuation | Pairing or communication | Wake every component and re-pair the complete system |
| Intermittent response | Low charge, marginal contact, sleep state or incomplete pairing | Check both battery states, contacts and pairing before adjusting the derailleur |
| Transmission flashes red and green | Rejected shift, often associated with temperature | Check the temperature and the exact component’s operating guidance |
| Indexing changed after an impact | Rotated derailleur or knurled ring | Use the Transmission alignment and reset procedure |
This classification prevents a common mistake: repeatedly changing mechanical settings when the controller battery is dead, or repeatedly pairing a derailleur whose position has physically moved.
Use this order for a sudden no-shift problem
Work through the checks in order. A depleted battery, a sleeping component or lost pairing can look exactly like a failed motor or damaged derailleur.
1. Wake the bike and inspect every status light
- Press the AXS button on the derailleur and the controller.
- Move or gently shake the bike, then issue a shift command again. AXS components enter a sleep state when stationary; a sleeping system may not respond until it wakes.
- Observe the derailleur LED. In SRAM’s AXS Digital Troubleshooting guidance, green means more than 25 percent charge remaining, red means low charge below that level, and flashing red means critically low charge, below 10 percent.
- For a conventional Eagle AXS derailleur, remove the rechargeable battery and charge it or substitute a known-charged, compatible battery. Refit it firmly and retry the shift.
- For Eagle Powertrain, read the battery and derailleur status on the e-bike display or in the AXS app. The system battery, not a separate removable derailleur battery, supplies the Transmission derailleur.
Do not infer battery condition from the controller alone. The controller and derailleur can have different charge states, and both must be powered for a command to reach the derailleur.
2. Replace the controller coin cell correctly
AXS controllers use a CR2032 coin cell. If the controller LED is absent, weak or intermittent after waking the bike, install a fresh CR2032 and test again. SRAM cautions that some child-safe CR2032 cells have a bitter coating. That coating can interfere with the battery terminal, so use an uncoated cell that matches the controller’s specification and make sure the contacts are seated cleanly. Do not force the battery or bend the terminal while installing it.

3. Retry after the sleep and power checks
Close the AXS app if it is actively connecting, wake the bike again and make one shift command. If the derailleur actuates now, the original symptom was power, sleep or contact related. If all components show battery life but the command still does nothing, proceed to pairing rather than repeatedly pressing the shifter.
Battery and power-source details that matter on an e-MTB
Powertrain and non-Powertrain bikes can look similar at the handlebar, but their derailleur power paths are different. On a conventional Eagle AXS bike, charging or swapping the removable derailleur battery is a direct diagnostic test. On Eagle Powertrain, removing a derailleur battery that is not fitted will not solve anything; check the e-bike system battery state on the display or through the app instead.
A controller battery problem can coexist with a fully charged derailleur. The derailleur may wake and show green while the shifter sends no command because its CR2032 is depleted or making poor contact. Conversely, a controller can light while the derailleur battery is too low to move. Check both ends of the link, and note which LED or display message you actually observed.
Keep a compatible spare CR2032 for a controller that uses one, but verify the specification before buying. A child-safe bitter coating is specifically called out by SRAM as a possible source of terminal interference. If a new cell produces an intermittent result, remove it, inspect the seating and contacts, and reinstall it without bending the terminal.
Re-pair the complete AXS system
SRAM states in its AXS Digital Troubleshooting guide: “If all your components have battery life but shifts still won’t work, try re-pairing your AXS system.” Pairing is a system operation, not just a controller-to-derailleur repair.
When pairing should be repeated
Repeat pairing after adding, removing or replacing any AXS component. It is also the next step when the batteries have power but a shift command does not actuate, or when the controller appears connected yet the derailleur does not respond.
Pair through the AXS app and component buttons
- Install or update the current AXS app on the phone that will manage the bike.
- Wake the derailleur, controller and any other AXS components.
- Open the app’s pairing function and follow its prompts for the exact component family. SRAM’s button timing and pairing sequence differ by generation, so do not substitute a conventional Eagle AXS sequence for an Eagle Transmission or Powertrain sequence.
- Pair every component in the drivetrain, not only the part that appears faulty.
- Command a shift in both directions and confirm that the app sees each component after pairing.
If pairing fails, repeat the wake-up and battery checks first. A component that is asleep or below its operating charge can interrupt pairing before the app reports a useful error.

Update firmware and use the official recovery procedure
Outdated firmware can leave otherwise powered components unable to communicate correctly. In the AXS app, check each listed component for firmware updates and install any update offered for that exact model. Keep the bike and phone powered during the update and follow the app’s completion message before testing a shift.
If the fault remains, use SRAM’s derailleur recovery reboot procedure from its AXS Digital Troubleshooting guidance. The exact button sequence is model-specific; use the current instructions for your derailleur rather than holding buttons at random. After the reboot, wake the system, pair all components again if prompted, and test shifting with the chain under light load on a work stand or in a safe area.
A firmware update or reboot does not correct a derailleur that has physically rotated after an impact. If the symptom began with a strike, combine the electronic checks with the Transmission alignment inspection instead of repeating resets indefinitely.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Understand a rejected Transmission shift
A Transmission derailleur can deliberately reject a shift instead of moving. SRAM identifies a red-and-green flashing Transmission derailleur LED as a rejected-shift indication. Its support guidance says a shift may be rejected below −15 °C (5 °F).
What to do in cold weather
- Move the bike to a warmer environment and allow the drivetrain and battery to reach a temperature within the component’s stated operating range.
- Wake the system and check the LED again.
- Test a shift without repeatedly commanding the derailleur while the red-and-green indication is present.
Do not treat the temperature threshold as a universal operating specification for every AXS part. SRAM’s digital troubleshooting material gives storage and operating ranges by component family, so consult the range for the actual derailleur, controller and e-bike system fitted to the bike.
If the fault appears only on a cold ride and clears after the bike warms, record the temperature and LED pattern for support. If the same indication remains at normal temperatures, continue with power, pairing, firmware and mechanical checks rather than assuming the battery is permanently damaged.
Fix poor Eagle Transmission shifting after a strike
If shifting became inaccurate immediately after a rock hit, crash or tip-over, suspect changed Transmission position before replacing electronic parts. Eagle Transmission is designed to shift under load, including on e-MTBs, but its position relative to the cassette must remain correct.

Inspect the alignment marks
Examine the derailleur and the alignment marks specified in the Eagle Transmission troubleshooting procedure. An impact can rotate the derailleur or the knurled ring. If the marks no longer show the prescribed relationship, follow SRAM’s derailleur or knurled-ring reset procedure for that model. Do not force the derailleur back by hand or improvise a new reference position.

Recheck the model-specific setup values
After an impact, or after changing a chainring, frame or drivetrain component, verify all of the following in SRAM’s Chain Length Guide or the AXS app:
- Correct chain length for the exact bike and drivetrain configuration.
- Correct Setup Cog for the cassette and derailleur model.
- Correct Setup Key position during installation and adjustment.
If any value has changed, perform the complete installation procedure again. Transmission setup is not a generic high-limit or barrel-adjuster exercise; the prescribed values establish the derailleur’s position across the cassette.
Confirm the derailleur torque
SRAM specifies 35 N⋅m for the Eagle Transmission derailleur mounting torque so that the derailleur maintains its position relative to the cassette. Use a calibrated torque wrench and the exact hardware procedure for the model. If you do not have the correct tool, adapter or torque specification, have a dealer perform this check. Guessing at torque can leave the derailleur misaligned or damage the mounting interface.

Inspect for a visibly damaged derailleur, mounting interface, cassette or chain before riding. The alignment procedure addresses the Transmission position, but it cannot repair bent or cracked hardware. If the derailleur will not hold its specified relationship after the reset, stop riding and have a dealer inspect it.
Check compatibility before blaming adjustment
SRAM warns that some combinations are unsuitable for e-MTB use. Specifically, it cautions against XS-1299 T-Type cassettes and XX SL chains on e-MTBs because they may experience premature wear. If one of these parts is fitted, confirm the intended component combination with SRAM or a dealer before spending time on repeated electronic pairing or alignment adjustments.
Compatibility matters especially after a component replacement. A new cassette, chain, chainring, derailleur or controller can require a complete pairing and Transmission setup cycle. Record the exact model names before ordering a replacement so that the app and installation guide can select the right instructions.
Official troubleshooting guidance does not establish a universal wear limit or a failure rate for AXS shifting. If shifting degrades gradually rather than suddenly, have the complete drivetrain assessed instead of applying a generic mileage threshold.

When to stop troubleshooting at home
Contact SRAM Rider Support or a qualified dealer when the drivetrain family is uncertain, a Transmission derailleur will not hold its alignment, the correct torque cannot be applied, or the fault continues after power, pairing, firmware and temperature checks. Repeated impacts, damaged mounting hardware and unexplained recurring faults need an inspection rather than more app resets.

Bring the bike, charger or system-battery information, the AXS app’s component list and a description of when the fault occurs. Tell the technician whether the failure began after a battery change, firmware update, cold ride, component replacement or impact. That history helps separate a communication fault from a changed mechanical setup.
A practical pre-ride check
- Wake the bike and confirm the derailleur and controller respond.
- Check the derailleur LED or Powertrain status before leaving.
- Carry a compatible, uncoated CR2032 if the controller uses a coin cell.
- For a conventional Eagle AXS derailleur, confirm the removable battery is charged.
- For Transmission, look for a changed alignment relationship after transporting the bike or riding rocky terrain.
- Keep the AXS app current so firmware and component status are available when needed.
The key decision is simple: electrical symptoms call for power, wake-up, pairing and firmware checks; a rejected cold-weather shift calls for temperature management; and poor Transmission indexing after an impact calls for alignment, setup values and torque. Applying the procedure for the wrong AXS generation is the most avoidable source of further trouble.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my SRAM AXS stop shifting even though the derailleur light is on?
A lit derailleur does not prove that the controller is powered or paired. Wake every component, check the controller’s CR2032, then re-pair the complete AXS system. If the batteries have charge and pairing still fails, update firmware and use SRAM’s model-specific recovery procedure.

One-click scans. No signup required.
How do I pair a SRAM AXS derailleur and controller?
Wake the derailleur, controller and every other AXS component, open the current AXS app and follow its pairing prompts for the exact drivetrain family. Pair the entire system rather than only the part that appears faulty. Button timing differs between conventional Eagle AXS, Eagle Transmission and Powertrain.
What does a red-and-green flashing Transmission LED mean?
SRAM identifies that pattern as a rejected shift. A shift may be rejected below −15 °C (5 °F). Warm the bike, check the operating guidance for the exact component family and test again. If the indication persists at normal temperatures, continue with power, pairing, firmware and mechanical checks.
Does Eagle Powertrain use a removable derailleur battery?
On an Eagle Powertrain e-MTB, the e-bike system battery powers the Transmission derailleur. Check status on the bike display or in the AXS app. The controller may still use its own CR2032 coin cell.
Why is Eagle Transmission shifting badly after a crash?
An impact can rotate the derailleur or knurled ring. Inspect the specified alignment marks and follow SRAM’s model-specific reset procedure. Then verify chain length, Setup Cog, Setup Key position and the 35 N⋅m derailleur torque.
Can a CR2032 battery cause intermittent AXS shifting?
Yes. A weak or poorly seated controller coin cell can interrupt commands even when the derailleur battery is charged. SRAM also warns that bitter child-safe coating on some CR2032 cells can interfere with the terminal. Use a compatible uncoated cell and seat it carefully.
Will cold weather always stop SRAM AXS shifting?
No. SRAM specifically notes that a Transmission shift may be rejected below −15 °C (5 °F), but operating and storage guidance varies by component family. Check the specification for the derailleur, controller and e-bike system actually fitted to your bike.
Are XS-1299 T-Type cassettes and XX SL chains suitable for every e-MTB?
SRAM cautions against using XS-1299 T-Type cassettes and XX SL chains on e-MTBs because premature wear may occur. Confirm the intended combination with SRAM or a qualified dealer before replacing parts or repeating setup adjustments.
The Bottom Line
Identify the drivetrain first. For a sudden no-shift fault, wake the system, check the correct power sources, replace a suspect CR2032, re-pair every component and update firmware. For a red-and-green Transmission LED, address temperature and the component’s operating range. For poor shifting after an impact or drivetrain change, use the exact Transmission alignment, chain-length, Setup Cog, Setup Key and 35 N⋅m torque procedure. If the generation, compatibility or mechanical condition is uncertain, stop and use SRAM Rider Support or a qualified dealer.
