Identify the Bosch system before changing anything
Bosch does not use one update procedure for every e-bike. The first diagnostic question is whether the bike has the Bosch smart system with eBike Flow or an older Bosch eBike system 2 setup using eBike Connect. The display and controls normally provide the clue: system 2 examples include Kiox and Nyon, while smart-system bikes are managed in eBike Flow.

Do not remove pairings or start an update until you know which display and app your bike uses. Bosch’s digital product status page separates smart-system products from eBike system 2 products, so the same error wording can lead to different instructions.
System generation matters because an app can show a familiar word such as “update” while the underlying process is different. Flow manages the smart system and transfers packages from the phone to the eBike. Kiox and Nyon have their own computer-oriented update paths. Instructions for one generation should not be treated as a universal Bosch procedure.

Use the failure stage to choose the right fix
Update problems fall into two materially different stages:
- Transfer or download: the update is moving from the phone or app toward the eBike. “Software update – transfer pending” is in this category.
- Installation: the bike has received the package and is applying it. Repeated installation failures require a different response from a stalled transfer.
Record the exact message before retrying. Also note whether the eBike switched off, whether Flow lost its connection, and whether the bike changed behavior only after the update appeared to finish. Those details determine whether to repair Bluetooth, reconnect every component or stop and contact a dealer.
A transfer problem does not automatically mean the drive unit is defective. Conversely, repeatedly restarting an installation is not the same as fixing a Bluetooth transfer. Keep the stages separate in your notes and when speaking with a dealer.

Bosch states that “A stable Bluetooth connection is required to transfer the software update from your phone to your eBike.” A transfer-pending message therefore points first to the phone-to-bike connection, not automatically to a defective drive unit.
- Open eBike Flow and select the affected eBike. Go to the component list associated with that bike.
- Check every listed component. Each component should show a connected or green status. A component that is switched off, detached or out of Bluetooth range can prevent a complete transfer.
- Remove devices you no longer own. If the eBike’s component list still contains an old or replaced device, remove that obsolete entry before retrying.
- Keep the phone and eBike together. Avoid moving out of Bluetooth range or switching the eBike off while the transfer is in progress.
- Retry the update from Flow. If the transfer begins and completes, allow the app to finish its confirmation rather than closing it immediately.
Check the list rather than assuming that the component you normally use is the only one involved. A second battery, a separate control unit or an optional module may still be associated with the eBike. Bosch’s instruction is to have the listed components connected, not merely to have the display visible in the app.
If the warning returns after all listed components show green, treat it as a pairing-path problem and use the download-failure reset below. Do not repeatedly interrupt an installation stage merely because a transfer took time.
When eBike Flow reports “Software update failed” during download
Bosch’s failed-update guidance separates a download problem from an installation problem. For a failure at the download or transfer stage, rebuild the pairing in this order. Bosch says these steps do not lose your settings.

- Turn off the eBike. Wait until it is fully off before changing its Bluetooth pairing.
- Remove the eBike from eBike Flow. Use the app’s option to remove the associated eBike, not just close the app.
- Remove the eBike from the phone’s Bluetooth settings. Delete the saved Bluetooth entry for that eBike from the phone operating system.
- Restart the phone. A full restart clears a Bluetooth session that may remain stuck after the app reports failure.
- Reconnect in Flow. Open eBike Flow, add or connect the eBike again and follow the pairing prompts.
- Start the update again. Keep the eBike powered on and the phone nearby while the package transfers.
Complete the sequence rather than performing only one step. Removing the eBike from Flow but leaving the old operating-system Bluetooth entry can preserve the same failed pairing path. Likewise, deleting the phone entry without removing the eBike in Flow does not rebuild the complete connection.
The exact wording of menu buttons can vary by Flow version and region. If a label differs, use the equivalent remove-eBike, Bluetooth-device removal and reconnect actions rather than guessing at unrelated settings. If you are unsure whether the failure happened during download or installation, save a screenshot and ask a Bosch dealer before repeatedly retrying.
If the eBike turns off or Flow loses connection during installation
The message “My eBike has turned off or lost connection to Flow App during installation” describes the installation stage, not merely a pending transfer. A single interruption may prompt Bosch to ask for another restart and retry. If the installation step keeps failing after the requested restart, stop repeating the process and contact a Bosch eBike dealer.
What to do before dealer escalation
- Make sure the eBike is powered off and then restarted as Bosch requests.
- Reconnect Flow to the eBike and confirm that the app can see the bike before attempting another installation.
- Do not intentionally disconnect the battery, remove a display or switch the bike off while installation is running.
- Write down the error text, the point at which the installation stopped and whether the display came back on.
If the restart returns the bike to a normal connected state and Bosch’s update can be attempted once more, follow that instruction exactly. If the same installation failure returns, further consumer retries are unlikely to answer why the package cannot be applied. Preserve the message and move to dealer diagnosis instead of experimenting with unrelated Bluetooth settings.

When a dealer is the correct route
Use dealer diagnosis when installation repeatedly fails, the eBike will not complete the restart sequence, or Flow cannot reconnect after the reset. A dealer can perform a complete software update and check the bike with the appropriate Bosch service equipment. There is no consumer accessory or generic cable documented as a universal fix for a failed installation.
Restore operation when the bike behaves differently after an update
If the update appears complete but the bike no longer works properly, Bosch identifies incomplete component updates as one possible cause. The drive unit, display or control units, battery or DualBattery and fitted optional components may all need current software.
Components to account for
- Drive unit
- Display and control units
- Main battery or DualBattery
- PowerMore 250, if fitted
- ABS, if fitted
- ConnectModule, if fitted
- eShift equipment, if fitted
A component that was disconnected, stored separately or not detected during the update can remain on older software. Bosch advises connecting all components before an update. Attach the forgotten component and run the update through Flow if the app offers it. If the complete bike cannot be brought to a consistent software state, take the bike to a dealer for a complete update.

For a DualBattery bicycle, account for both batteries rather than assuming that updating the battery currently installed is enough. Optional equipment also matters: a PowerMore 250 range extender, ABS hardware, ConnectModule or eShift system can be part of the fitted configuration even if you do not use that feature on every ride.

- A control or display function worked before the update but is unavailable afterward.
- Assistance, braking-related functions or shifting behave differently after the update.
- Flow shows a component that has not received the current software.
- The bike works only when one battery or optional module is disconnected.
These symptoms do not prove that a component is damaged. They indicate that every fitted component should be identified and checked before parts are replaced. If Flow cannot update the missing component after it is attached, a dealer can perform the complete update and check whether the components are communicating correctly.
What to do if changing an eBike setting does not work
For the question “What should I do if changing my eBike settings does not work?”, Bosch’s first explanation is that the changed value may not have reached the eBike, for example because of a Bluetooth problem.
- Confirm that the eBike is connected to eBike Flow, not merely that the app is open.
- Change the setting again while the connection indicator shows the bike is connected.
- Wait for the app to finish sending the change before leaving the screen or switching off the eBike.
- If the setting still does not save, restart the eBike.
- Reconnect Flow to the restarted eBike and try the setting again.
This procedure attempts to send the setting again; it does not guarantee recovery of every setting that was already lost. If several settings fail together after an update, check component completeness and consider dealer diagnosis rather than repeatedly changing values.
Do not interpret a value displayed in the app as proof that the eBike accepted it. The meaningful check is to remain connected, send the value again and verify the result after reconnecting. If only one setting is affected, retry that setting first; if multiple controls or functions changed together, treat the pattern as a possible incomplete update and document it for support.
Legacy Bosch eBike system 2 update procedures
Do not force a smart-system Flow procedure onto a Kiox or Nyon bike. Bosch’s system 2 instructions establish separate onboard-computer paths, and they do not establish that every drive-unit or component update can be performed by the rider.
Nyon
- Connect Nyon to Wi-Fi and provide power through USB.
- On Nyon, open Settings > Connections > Wi-Fi and establish the network connection if it is not already configured.
- Open Settings > My Nyon > Check for updates.
- If Nyon reports an update, connect the computer to a computer by USB and follow the prompts shown by Nyon.
These steps concern the Nyon computer. They are not a general method for updating every system 2 drive unit, battery or optional component. If a system 2 component is not represented in the Nyon update flow, use Bosch system 2 service guidance or ask a dealer rather than applying Flow instructions.

Kiox
- Establish the Bluetooth connection between Kiox, the eBike and the eBike Connect app.
- Open My eBike in eBike Connect.
- Select the linked Kiox.
- Choose Check for software update.
Bosch says Kiox downloads update data after the Bluetooth connection to eBike Connect is established. If the app does not show the linked Kiox, restore that connection before interpreting the absence of an update as a fault. These instructions concern Kiox software; they do not prove that a rider can update every system 2 drive unit or battery from the app.
Common troubleshooting mistakes to avoid
- Using Flow for a system 2 bike: identify the display and app first.
- Calling every failure an installation failure: transfer pending and download errors use Bluetooth and pairing remedies.
- Updating only the display: the drive unit, batteries, controls and fitted options may also require current software.
- Leaving an obsolete device paired: remove components you no longer own from the eBike’s list.
- Repeating a failed installation indefinitely: restart as instructed once, then use dealer service when the installation keeps failing.
- Replacing parts too early: a failed update alone does not establish that a battery, display or drive unit is defective.
Check Bosch service status before treating the bike as faulty
A temporary digital-service incident can prevent Flow from transferring software even when the bike and phone are configured correctly. Check Bosch’s live digital product status page during troubleshooting. That page showed no current incidents or planned maintenance on October 13, 2026, but status information changes quickly and that observation is not a permanent guarantee.

Prepare useful information for Bosch support or a dealer
Before handing over the bike, record the Bosch system generation, display model, app name, exact error wording, whether the failure occurred during transfer or installation, and which components are fitted. Note whether the eBike powered off and whether Flow could reconnect afterward. This prevents a dealer from having to reconstruct the failure from a vague “update failed” report.
- Photograph the error message if it disappears after a restart.
- List both batteries when the bike has a DualBattery setup.
- Identify optional equipment such as PowerMore 250, ABS, ConnectModule or eShift.
- Tell the dealer whether the issue began immediately after a software update or after a setting change.
- Record whether the status page showed an incident when you tried the update.
Do not replace a battery, display or drive unit solely because an update failed. The documented remedies begin with the correct system path, Bluetooth and component checks, then dealer diagnosis when installation or complete updating cannot be finished.

What should I do if the installation keeps failing?
Restart the eBike as Bosch requests and reconnect Flow once. If the installation step repeatedly fails, stop retrying and contact a Bosch eBike dealer for diagnosis and a complete software update.
Why does my Bosch e-bike work differently after an update?
One possible cause is that not all fitted components received the current software. Connect the drive unit, displays and controls, batteries or DualBattery, and options such as PowerMore 250, ABS, ConnectModule or eShift, then update through Flow if offered.
