Next verify that the external charger has power, reseat the compatible connector, and try a second known-working charger. Charging elsewhere points toward the original EVSE, station, cable, or electrical supply; failure on multiple chargers makes a vehicle-side fault more likely. Stop at the safety boundary and use a qualified electrician, station operator, or trained EV technician whenever equipment is damaged, repeatedly trips a breaker, becomes hot or wet, or involves the high-voltage system.
Put safety before diagnosis
Charging equipment carries hazardous voltage even when a session has not started. Do not open a wall charger or public charging cabinet, touch exposed conductors, probe the vehicle inlet, force a connector, or attempt traction-battery repairs. Stop immediately if the plug, cable, inlet, or EVSE is cracked, melted, unusually hot, wet, smoking, or physically compromised. Flooding or collision damage near the traction battery requires professional attention.

- Follow the current owner’s manual and the charging equipment’s manual for your exact vehicle, connector, and software version.
- Use only the connector and cable types approved for the vehicle and station.
- Do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips, bypass a safety device, or raise the charging current above the circuit’s rating.
- For high-voltage work, use qualified EV technicians. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) states: “You should never try to service the traction battery without proper training and specialized equipment.”
1. Read the car’s message before changing anything
Record the exact wording of the dashboard or app alert and note what the charging indicator is doing. This is more useful than simply seeing that the battery percentage has not increased. Messages may distinguish an unpowered station, lost communication with charging equipment, an unrecognized cable, an incomplete connection, or a vehicle fault.

Look them up in the manual for your make, model, and software rather than applying another car’s color code. Chevrolet’s public charging guidance, for example, says: “Flashing blue: Your vehicle has been set to delayed charging and will begin charging at a later time based on your charging settings.” That behavior is not evidence of a failed charger by itself.

Capture useful details
- Exact alert text, including whether it names the station, cable, port, or vehicle.
- Battery percentage before and after plugging in.
- Whether the indicator is off, steady, or flashing, and its color according to your manual.
- Charger type and location: home EVSE, workplace unit, or public station.
- Whether the station display or app reports an error, authorization problem, or outage.
Do not clear the alert until you have recorded it. A technician or station operator can use the wording and time of failure to identify the affected side of the connection.
2. Rule out a schedule or charge target
A plugged-in car may be waiting intentionally. Open the vehicle’s charging screen and its companion app, if available, and check for a delayed-start, off-peak, departure-time, or “charge later” setting. Confirm the selected days and start time, the vehicle’s clock and time zone, and whether the setting applies to the current location.
Also check the charge target. Many vehicles stop when they reach a saved percentage below 100 percent. If the battery is already at that target, the car can appear connected without drawing power. Temporarily choose a higher target only if that is appropriate for the vehicle and your normal charging practice, then begin a session according to the manual.
Start a controlled test
- Disable delayed charging temporarily or select an immediate-charge option.
- Raise the target above the present battery percentage, if the vehicle permits it.
- Lock the car or use the manufacturer’s specified start sequence; some vehicles begin only after the connector is latched and the session is authorized.
- Wait for the normal charging indication and verify that the battery percentage or displayed power is increasing.
If immediate charging works, restore your preferred schedule after checking that its time zone, location, and target are correct. If it still does not start, continue with the equipment checks rather than repeatedly changing settings.

3. Check whether the external charger has power
Inspect the EVSE, cable, and station display without opening anything. A dark display or absent status light can mean the unit is unpowered; an error message may indicate a failed self-test, communication problem, payment or authorization issue, or an outage.
For a home EVSE
- Check the unit’s normal power indicator and any screen message.
- Confirm that the plug is fully inserted into the outlet or that the hardwired unit has not lost its supply.
- Look for an accessible reset or test control only when the EVSE manual specifically permits it.
- Check the associated breaker once. If it trips again, leave it off and call a qualified electrician or the equipment installer.
Never remove the EVSE cover to inspect terminals. If power cannot be restored safely, the fault may be in the circuit, wiring, disconnect, or charger and requires professional diagnosis.
For a public station
- Read the station’s screen and follow its displayed start and authorization steps.
- Check the station operator’s app or status page for an outage or connector-specific fault.
- Try the station’s other connector only if it is clearly compatible and the first connector is not damaged.
- If the station remains unpowered or reports an error, contact the operator using the number or support function shown on the station, then move to another functioning station when practical.
Do not assume that a payment approval means the power electronics are healthy; the operator may need to reset or service the stall.

4. Check the connector and inlet
Disconnect and reconnect only in the order specified by the vehicle and EVSE manuals. Make sure the connector is the correct type and is fully inserted until the vehicle’s latch engages. A partially inserted plug can allow the car and station to detect each other but prevent current from flowing.

Inspect without touching contacts
- Look for visible dirt, ice, moisture, foreign objects, bent plastic, or damage around the connector and inlet.
- Keep the inlet and connector dry; do not insert tools, cloth, or fingers into the contacts.
- Do not force a connector that will not insert or release. Use the manual’s release procedure and call service if it remains locked.
- Check that the cable is not under tension or pulling the connector sideways.
Some vehicles report a specific “charge port latch not engaged” condition. Tesla documentation, for example, identifies incomplete insertion and visible obstructions as possible causes in that situation. Treat such model-specific guidance as an example, not a universal procedure.
5. Isolate the fault by comparing chargers
The most useful safe test is to keep the vehicle constant and try a second known-working compatible charger, cable, stall, or station. When possible, perform the reverse comparison as well: connect a different vehicle to the suspected charger. These tests show which side the problem follows.

This comparison is a diagnostic inference, not a guarantee. A station can have an intermittent fault, and two chargers can share the same electrical supply or network problem. Test at an independent location when possible.
6. If the problem is at home, stay on the safe side of the electrical boundary
A home charging failure can originate in the outlet, dedicated circuit, breaker, disconnect, wiring, or EVSE. The vehicle’s advertised maximum charging rate does not override the circuit’s rating, and a higher current setting cannot make an undersized circuit safe.

When a breaker trips
- Stop the charging session and unplug only as directed by the manuals.
- Allow the equipment to cool if it is warm, and look for visible damage or moisture.
- Reset the breaker once if there is no sign of damage and the electrical instructions permit it.
- If it trips again, leave it off and call a qualified electrician. Do not keep cycling it or install a larger breaker as a workaround.
A Chevrolet Volt owner’s manual cited in charging guidance advises matching the EVSE current limit to the outlet’s capacity and using the lowest level when capacity is unknown. That is model-specific historical guidance, not a universal current specification; use the current manual for your car and EVSE.
When the EVSE has no power
Check only accessible indicators and the documented supply connection. If the unit remains dark, the outlet is dead, or power cannot be restored, the electrician or installer must verify the circuit and equipment. Do not open the EVSE, remove a panel, probe an outlet, or bypass a ground-fault or other protective device.
When the car charges from an outlet but not the installed EVSE
If a safe, compatible alternative confirms that the vehicle can charge, focus on the installed unit, its cable, settings, and circuit. Replacement may be appropriate only after diagnosis. Verify the vehicle inlet, voltage and current capability, circuit rating, EVSE status indications, and installation requirements before selecting another unit; a product’s advertised maximum rate may exceed what the vehicle or circuit can use.

Follow the station’s exact start sequence, including connector selection, app authorization, payment, and any “start” control. Confirm that the selected connector matches the vehicle. If the station displays “not powered,” “communication lost,” or another equipment error after the documented restart or authorization steps, contact the operator and provide the station ID, connector number, time, and exact message.

Move to another functioning station rather than repeatedly retrying a damaged or unpowered stall. If your car charges at the replacement station, report the first station so it can be taken out of service or repaired. Keep the failed-session receipt or app record if the operator needs it to correct billing.
8. When the vehicle itself becomes the likely cause
Vehicle-side trouble becomes more plausible when the same failure follows the car to multiple independent chargers, especially when the alerts identify the inlet, onboard charging system, communication, or vehicle readiness.
Do not confuse the 12-volt battery with the traction battery
The low-voltage 12-volt battery powers control systems and can affect whether charging starts. It is separate from the high-voltage propulsion battery. A weak 12-volt battery may produce unrelated warning lights, failed locks, or a car that will not boot normally, but it does not make the high-voltage pack safe to service yourself.
Use only the owner’s manual procedure for any permitted low-voltage jump or support operation. NHTSA says the high-voltage battery cannot be jump-started and warns consumers not to service it without proper training and specialized equipment. Never connect a booster to high-voltage terminals or remove covers to investigate a charging fault.
Escalate persistent faults
- Save the exact alerts, dates, locations, charger IDs, and whether another charger worked.
- Photograph visible external damage only if doing so is safe and does not require touching the equipment.
- Contact the vehicle maker, dealer, roadside assistance provider, or qualified EV service and describe the comparison results.
- Follow instructions about towing or transporting a vehicle with suspected battery, collision, flood, heat, or smoke damage.
A service professional may need to diagnose the charge-port latch, communication circuitry, onboard charging hardware, software, or low-voltage supply. Those systems require vehicle-specific procedures and protective equipment.
A quick decision path

After charging resumes
Confirm that the session is actually delivering power rather than merely showing “connected.” Check the charging rate or power display, watch for a few minutes, and verify that the battery percentage begins to rise. Re-enable your normal schedule and target only after the immediate test succeeds.
Keep a short record of the successful charger, connector type, settings, and any alert that appeared. If the same warning returns, that history will help the station operator or technician distinguish an intermittent external fault from a vehicle problem.
