Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →An intermittent backup-camera image can stem from the camera, wiring or connectors, unstable power or reverse-trigger input, moisture, or a vehicle-specific display or camera module. The symptom alone does not identify the failed part. Start with safe observations and simple checks; if the fault persists, use your vehicle’s service information or have a qualified technician diagnose it before replacing parts.
What the symptom can—and cannot—tell you
Note exactly what happens when you select Reverse: does the display stay on the previous screen, go black or blue, freeze, show a noisy image, or display a warning? Also record whether the failure follows rain or washing, a temperature change, a bump, or tailgate movement. These patterns can help someone reproduce the fault, but they do not prove its cause.
Possible fault areas include the camera, a cable or connector, power or ground, the reverse-trigger signal, moisture, or a vehicle-specific module or software issue. For example, GM service bulletin 23-NA-062 describes vibration-related camera or cable failures and excessive resistance at coaxial connectors on specified GM systems. Those examples and procedures do not apply automatically to other makes or models.
Use the symptoms to choose the next check
The display does not switch to the camera in Reverse
Check whether the reverse lamps work consistently. If they do not, a vehicle-specific reverse circuit issue may be relevant; if they do, that still does not establish that the camera is receiving its request signal or power. Consult the owner’s manual for the relevant user checks and fuse information, and do not replace a switch or camera based on this clue alone.

This feature unnecessary power consumption, extends battery life, and improves both safety and durability—without the need for manual shutdown
The screen goes black or blue, or shows a service message
Camera, coaxial cable, connector resistance, vibration, water intrusion, and module or software problems are all possible areas, depending on the vehicle. GM Bulletin 23-NA-062 addresses specified GM surround-view and trailer-camera configurations and related diagnostic codes. Its codes and repair procedure are not a general diagnosis for other vehicles.
The image cuts out over bumps or when the tailgate moves
A connection or conductor affected by vibration or flex is a reasonable lead for diagnosis. Avoid pulling trim or manipulating wiring unless the vehicle’s service procedure makes it safe; a technician can inspect the relevant harness and connectors using the correct access and repair steps.

The picture is foggy, distorted, or noisy
Clean the outside of the camera lens first. If the image remains poor, moisture inside the camera housing or a degraded video connection may need inspection. Do not assume that a new camera is the answer until the fault is isolated.
An aftermarket wireless camera works only with the engine off
Installation details vary by product. Garmin says a relay may be required for some BC 20 installations. That product-specific guidance is not a general fix for factory cameras or other aftermarket systems.

Safe troubleshooting sequence
- Secure the vehicle. Park safely, keep the brake applied, and do not rely on the camera as your only view behind the vehicle. Ford’s manual describes the rear-view camera as a reverse aid to use with interior and exterior mirrors for maximum coverage; check the manual for your own vehicle.
- Clean and observe. Clean the lens and note the exact screen behavior, warning messages, and conditions when the fault appears.
- Check the reverse lamps. Observe whether they operate consistently when Reverse is selected. Treat a shared failure as a clue for diagnosis, not proof that a particular switch or circuit component has failed.
- Make only safe visual checks. Look for visible damage, accessible loose aftermarket connections, or water around the camera without disassembling safety-sensitive trim. Use the owner’s manual to identify a fuse and its correct rating; never replace it with a higher-rated fuse.
- Escalate persistent faults. A technician can retrieve vehicle-specific diagnostic codes and follow the manufacturer’s procedure. Depending on the vehicle, diagnosis may include checking power and ground under load, video or coaxial connections, harness flex points, module counters, or software status. GM’s bulletin, for example, directs technicians to check specified connectors and the SD card and software status before replacing certain modules based on codes alone.
- Replace parts only after confirmation. A compatible camera or harness depends on the vehicle’s make, model, year, trim, and factory or aftermarket configuration.
When electrical testing is appropriate
A voltage measurement at the camera while the system is operating can help reveal a supply that drops intermittently. The correct pins, expected voltage, and safe test method depend on the vehicle, so use its wiring diagram and service procedure rather than probing by guesswork. A digital multimeter is a measurement tool, not a diagnosis or repair on its own.
For a persistent fault—especially one accompanied by stored codes or a service message—vehicle-specific scan tools and service information may be needed. Manufacturer procedures take precedence over generic fuse, reverse-light, or voltage-testing advice.
