Give the transporter an accurate description of the motorcycle’s condition, compare the complete service and coverage terms, document the handoff, and inspect the bike before accepting delivery.
The auction’s rules for the exact branch and lot control the release. A carrier cannot collect a motorcycle that has not been paid for, released, and scheduled under that facility’s procedure, and a buyer cannot assume that self-pickup is allowed simply because the motorcycle is legally theirs.

1. Confirm that the auction will release the motorcycle
Do this before booking a truck, buying a ticket, or driving to the facility. Open the buyer account and the lot record, then verify all of the following with the auction branch:
- Payment has cleared and the motorcycle is marked released for pickup.
- You have any required authorization, gate pass, release number, or buyer identification.
- A pickup appointment, check-in window, or advance notice is required, and you know how to book it.
- The facility’s operating hours, loading hours, weekend rules, and holiday closures match your plan.
- The motorcycle can be loaded onto your trailer, truck, or carrier vehicle, or whether the auction requires an approved transporter.
- The free-hold period, storage-fee start date, and rate that apply to that location.
- Any special process for a motorcycle that does not run, roll, steer, or brake.
Rules can differ between auction operators and between branches of the same operator. Ask the branch to confirm the instructions in writing or in your account rather than relying on a general webpage or a previous purchase.

What the Copart workflow illustrates
Copart’s published help information describes three separate paths: Copart Delivered, delivery through a third-party transporter, and scheduled self-pickup. In the third-party path, the transporter receives the gate and appointment instructions. Copart says its staff load vehicles onto the buyer’s truck, trailer, or transporter vehicle at pickup, and that vehicles cannot be driven off its facilities. Its storage terms can vary by location, so check the live account and branch information before relying on a stated free-hold period.
Those are Copart procedures, not a universal auction standard. Another auction may require the buyer to arrange loading, may limit which carriers enter the yard, or may insist on a particular appointment system.
2. Pick the transport method that matches the lot
There are four practical arrangements. The right choice depends on auction compatibility, the motorcycle’s condition, equipment, route, timing, and the protection terms you receive in writing.

Auction delivery
Ask whether the auction offers delivery for this particular lot and destination. Request the full quote and estimated pickup and delivery windows, then compare them with outside carriers. An auction’s delivery option may simplify release coordination, but the name of the service does not by itself establish a guaranteed arrival date, a particular truck type, or a specific level of damage protection. Read the service terms.
Third-party or specialist carrier
A specialist may provide motorcycle chocks, soft straps, crating, a lift-gate truck, or other equipment. Those features are provider offerings, not equipment every motorcycle truck carries. Confirm what will be on the vehicle assigned to your shipment and whether the provider is the actual carrier or is arranging another carrier.

Self-haul
Self-pickup can be convenient and may avoid waiting for a carrier, but it shifts release coordination, loading safety, securement, and transit responsibility to you. Use it only when the auction permits it and you have a suitable trailer or flatbed, a loading ramp, and attachment points designed for transport. The motorcycle manual cited for an NC750X describes using a motorcycle trailer or flatbed with a loading ramp and warns against towing the motorcycle. That guidance is model-specific; use the manual for the exact motorcycle you purchased.
3. Describe the motorcycle accurately to any carrier
Route-only quotes are not enough. A motorcycle that runs and brakes normally may be loaded differently from one with a locked wheel or damaged fork. Include the following in your first request:

- Pickup contact information, appointment procedure, operating hours, and any gate instructions already supplied.
- Destination address or ZIP code and whether delivery is residential, commercial, terminal-based, or restricted by access.
- Make, model, year, approximate dimensions and weight if known, and whether accessories or loose parts are included.
- Whether the motorcycle runs, rolls, steers, and brakes under its own control.
- Missing keys, a locked steering head, flat tires, damaged suspension, bent bars, seized wheels, or parts that could fall off.
- Your required pickup date or window and any deadline created by storage fees.
- Whether you want open or enclosed transport.
Providers describe route-specific quoting based on the motorcycle and route. If you omit a non-running condition and the assigned truck cannot load it, the carrier may refuse collection or charge for a different arrangement. Send photographs when possible, including the loading side and any damage that affects movement.
4. Compare the complete service, not just the headline price
Obtain a written quote that identifies the service being sold. Compare these items side by side:
- Total price for the stated route, including disclosed handling, lift-gate, crating, terminal, residential-access, or other surcharges.
- Pickup window and estimated delivery window, rather than an informal promise of a particular day.
- Whether the company owns the truck, brokers the move, or may assign another carrier.
- Open or enclosed equipment and the actual loading method.
- Whether a wheel chock, soft straps, crate, pallet, ramp, or lift gate is included.
- Condition photographs or inspection paperwork at pickup and delivery.
- Coverage limits, exclusions, deductible, and the procedure and deadline for a damage claim.
- Who is responsible for obtaining the auction release, making the appointment, and waiting if the facility is delayed.
Commercial carrier descriptions commonly present open transport as practical for many standard motorcycles. Enclosed service may be worth comparing for a custom, vintage, collector, luxury, show, or weather-sensitive bike. This is a suitability distinction, not a promise that enclosed shipping prevents every loss or that open shipping is unsafe. Consider weather exposure, route, loading method, motorcycle value, and the actual written terms.

5. Prepare for pickup at the auction
Once the release and transport appointment are confirmed, make a single pickup packet containing the lot information, authorization, appointment confirmation, carrier contact, and destination details. Give the carrier the exact branch address and any instructions for entering the yard.

- Photograph all sides of the motorcycle in good light. Include existing scratches, dents, broken controls, missing parts, accessories, the odometer if visible, and the condition of the tires and wheels.
- Photograph loose items separately and identify whether they are included in the shipment or must be packed independently.
- Record the condition on the auction or carrier inspection form. Do not sign a blank condition report.
- Confirm that the lot number and vehicle identification information on the paperwork match the motorcycle being loaded.
- Ask the loader to explain where straps, chocks, or other restraints will contact the motorcycle, especially if painted or fragile parts are damaged.
Keep copies of the release, photographs, inspection form, quote, and correspondence. These documents establish what was handed over and which party accepted each responsibility.
6. Self-hauling: equipment and loading sequence
A motorcycle trailer or flatbed must have enough capacity for the motorcycle and any included parts, a loading ramp appropriate to the height and approach angle, and rigid tie-down points positioned so the bike can be restrained without relying on fragile bodywork. The tow vehicle and trailer must also be legal and suitable for the combined load under the rules that apply to your route.
Loading a running motorcycle
- Park the tow vehicle and trailer on firm, level ground, apply the tow vehicle’s parking brake, and secure the trailer according to its instructions.
- Set the ramp firmly and check that its width, surface, and rated capacity suit the motorcycle.
- Use an assistant. Keep the path clear and do not try to control a heavy motorcycle alone if the engine, clutch, or brakes are unreliable.
- Roll or ride the motorcycle up only when the auction permits riding during loading and the motorcycle can be controlled safely. A motorcycle that cannot be driven off the facility may still be loaded by staff or by pushing; follow the branch instruction.
- Place the motorcycle in the trailer’s intended position, typically aligned with the trailer’s centerline and clear of doors, rails, and other cargo.
- Apply the parking brake if the model has one, select the gear or transmission position recommended by the motorcycle and trailer instructions, and keep the motorcycle upright while restraints are attached.
Loading a non-running or damaged motorcycle
Tell the auction and carrier in advance if the motorcycle will not start, cannot roll, cannot steer, or cannot brake. A locked wheel, damaged fork, or collapsed suspension can require a winch, dolly, lift gate, crate, or additional people. Do not improvise by pulling against handlebars, mirrors, exhaust parts, fairings, or other components that are not designed as tie-down points. Ask the carrier to confirm the planned loading method before dispatch.
Securement
Attach transport straps to rigid, appropriate tie-down points on the transport vehicle and to suitable structural points on the motorcycle, following the motorcycle and trailer instructions. The restraints must prevent tipping and forward-and-backward movement. One strap arrangement is not universal: attachment locations, strap count, tension, and any fork-compression method depend on the motorcycle and equipment.

- Use the trailer’s designated metal tie-down points rather than rails, gates, plastic trim, or improvised hooks.
- Keep straps away from sharp edges, hot exhaust components, brake lines, wiring, and painted surfaces that can be damaged by abrasion.
- Use a wheel chock when compatible with the motorcycle and trailer; verify that it is secured and sized for the tire.
- Do not tighten restraints so aggressively that suspension, seals, bodywork, or the frame is damaged.
- Keep loose straps secured so they cannot reach wheels or the road.
The cited equipment guidance calls for rigid metal tie-down points and regular checks. It does not establish one universal strap rating, number of straps, or fork-compression setting for every motorcycle. Follow the exact instructions supplied with your trailer, straps, and motorcycle.
During the journey
Stop soon after departure and recheck the motorcycle’s upright position, strap tension, chock, ramp and gate latches, and trailer connection. Repeat checks at sensible intervals and after rough roads, heavy braking, or weather changes. If a strap loosens or a motorcycle shifts, move to a safe location and correct the problem before continuing.

At delivery, inspect the motorcycle before signing a clean receipt. Compare it with the pickup photographs and condition record, checking controls, mirrors, fairings, exhaust, wheels, tires, luggage, and any loose parts. Photograph the motorcycle in the delivery location and record new damage, missing items, or inaccessible areas on the delivery document immediately. Ask the driver to acknowledge the notation and retain a copy.
There is no single claims deadline established for every carrier. Follow the contract, coverage document, and applicable local rules. Notify the carrier promptly, preserve the photographs and paperwork, and avoid repairs that could erase evidence until the carrier explains its inspection process, unless safety requires immediate action.
8. Match common problems to the right response
The auction says the carrier cannot enter
Stop dispatch rather than sending the truck to wait. Ask the branch whether the carrier needs a buyer authorization, a gate pass, a scheduled appointment, or a transporter registration. Give the corrected instructions to the carrier and confirm the new pickup window.

The motorcycle is not as described
If it does not run, roll, steer, or brake as expected, tell the carrier before loading. Request revised equipment and pricing in writing. A truck equipped only for a running motorcycle may not be able to collect a bike with a locked wheel or severe suspension damage.
The storage deadline is approaching
Ask the auction for the exact fee start date and whether an appointment within the free period is sufficient or the motorcycle must physically leave by then. Compare a faster service with storage charges and obtain the decision in writing.
The quote changes at pickup
Ask which newly discovered fact caused the change: access, condition, dimensions, waiting time, or equipment. Do not authorize extra work without a written amount and an explanation of who is responsible. If the carrier cannot provide the promised equipment, contact the auction and arrange a safe alternative rather than forcing an unsafe load.
9. A practical decision checklist
- Release: Payment cleared, release status confirmed, authorization and appointment ready.
- Facility: Branch hours, loading rules, transporter access, and storage deadline verified.
- Condition: Running, rolling, steering, braking, keys, wheels, suspension, and loose parts accurately reported.
- Method: Auction delivery, approved transporter, specialist carrier, or self-haul selected for the actual lot.
- Equipment: Open or enclosed truck, chock, straps, crate, lift gate, ramp, and helpers confirmed in writing.
- Price and timing: Full route-specific quote, pickup window, delivery estimate, and extra charges understood.
- Protection: Coverage limits, exclusions, inspection process, and claims instructions retained.
- Records: Photos, lot details, release documents, condition report, and delivery receipt saved.
The safest arrangement is the one the auction will release, the carrier can physically load, and the written terms clearly describe. Confirm those three points before the motorcycle leaves the yard.
