A badge is only a starting clue. To verify a Dodge or Ram SRT, match the vehicle identification number (VIN) to the correct model-year series or body code, inspect the vehicle information plate, confirm factory build or sales-code records, and have an authorized dealer resolve any conflict. A replacement badge, engine cover, wheel, or “Powered by SRT” component can make a non-SRT look convincing without changing what the vehicle was built as.
What makes a Dodge or Ram a genuine SRT?
SRT means Street & Racing Technology. Ram’s official SRT FAQ describes vehicles carrying the SRT badge as those developed by the SRT Performance Division and representing the highest-performance variant of that model. That description concerns the vehicle’s factory identity, not simply the presence of an emblem or a high-output engine.

A genuine SRT is therefore a vehicle whose VIN and factory records identify it as the claimed SRT series for its model year. Exterior trim, wheels, an engine cover, exhaust parts, or a swapped engine can be changed after the vehicle leaves the factory. Those parts may be useful inspection clues, but they cannot establish the original series by themselves.
The strongest proof is a consistent set of records: the VIN on the vehicle and paperwork, a model-year-specific VIN identification entry, the vehicle information or equipment plate, and factory build data. Sales codes and physical details are useful corroboration.

Step-by-step SRT authenticity check
1. Record the VIN from the vehicle and documents
Start with the VIN physically attached to the vehicle, normally on the driver-side doorframe label. Copy all characters exactly, including any letters that can be confused with numbers. Then compare it with the VIN on the registration, title and insurance documents. Mopar identifies those locations as primary places to find the VIN.
Do not rely on a photograph supplied by a seller when you can inspect the vehicle yourself. A VIN plate, door label, title, or registration that does not match the others is a stop-and-verify issue, not a minor paperwork discrepancy.
- Check the driver-side doorframe label for a complete VIN.
- Compare the VIN with the title, registration and insurance paperwork.
- Look for altered, damaged, loose, or obviously replaced labels.
- Write down the model year shown by the vehicle and documents before decoding.
2. Use the identification manual for the exact model year
VIN series and body codes are not universal across all SRT years. Select the FCA/NICB identification manual that matches the vehicle’s model year, then locate the claimed model and SRT series. A decoder that does not identify the year can produce a plausible-looking but incorrect result.

The year-specific difference is illustrated by Challenger entries. The 2020 FCA/NICB manual lists Challenger SRT Hell Cat as a distinct series with code DZC. The 2022 manual separately lists SRT Hell Cat with code DZC and SRT Hell Cat Redeye with code DZL. The same apparent badge or engine family can therefore correspond to different series entries depending on year.
Record the exact series name and code shown in the applicable manual. If the VIN decodes to a standard Challenger, Charger, Durango, Ram, or another non-SRT series, the vehicle is not made genuine by later SRT cosmetics.

3. Inspect the vehicle information or equipment plate
For a Ram SRT-10, the operating-manual reference identifies a vehicle information plate carrying the model, wheelbase, VIN, truck order number and code numbers. Locate the plate and transcribe its data rather than checking only one line.
Compare the plate with the title and the VIN you recorded from the doorframe. A plate that belongs to another truck, contains a different VIN, or lists a configuration inconsistent with the vehicle requires professional investigation. Do not remove or replace the plate to make a project truck look original; altered identification information can create legal and resale problems.
4. Check factory sales codes as supporting evidence
The FCA sales-code reference lists MTV for an SRT8 badge and MTZ for a Ram SRT10 badge. These codes can help confirm that the expected factory equipment or badge was associated with the build.
A sales code is not a substitute for the VIN. A code may describe one item, and a replacement part can carry the same marking without proving that the entire vehicle was built as an SRT. Use the code alongside the VIN, the model-year manual, the equipment plate and factory records.
5. Check official Mopar information and the SRT performance report
Mopar provides VIN information resources and an SRT performance-report lookup that uses the VIN. Enter the vehicle’s own VIN, not a seller’s generic example or a VIN from a similar car. Save or print the resulting information so you can compare it with the title, equipment plate and visible configuration.

Read the result for the vehicle’s identity and build details rather than assuming that every listed performance component proves an SRT series. If the report, title and vehicle disagree, pause the purchase until the conflict is explained.

An authorized dealer can compare the VIN with manufacturer build data and may be able to clarify an unusual series, replacement body, engine change, or documentation error. Bring the title, registration, doorframe VIN, equipment-plate information, and any Mopar report.
Ask the service or parts department to identify the factory series and original engine and drivetrain configuration. A dealer’s confirmation is particularly valuable when the vehicle has been modified, repaired after a collision, or imported into a different market.
How to compare two SRT candidates
When two vehicles are advertised as the same SRT, evaluate them on the same evidence rather than choosing the one with more aggressive styling. The candidate with matching VIN and factory documentation is the stronger authenticity prospect.

Why a badge is weak evidence
SRT emblems are replaceable parts. A non-SRT vehicle can receive SRT badges, wheels, grilles, spoilers, seats, brake components or an engine cover. Even a complete cosmetic conversion can leave the VIN identifying the original non-SRT series.

Inspect whether the badges sit straight, whether the paint or adhesive around them differs from surrounding panels, and whether trim pieces show different wear. These clues may reveal modification, but clean installation does not prove factory origin.
“Powered by SRT” does not identify the whole vehicle
Components marked “Powered by SRT” should not be treated as proof that the complete car or truck is an SRT series. An engine or accessory may have been installed in another vehicle, and a branded replacement part may be genuine without being original to that VIN. The VIN and factory records must agree before the vehicle can be represented as factory SRT.
Engine swaps and drivetrain changes
A 6.4-liter or Hellcat-powered vehicle is not automatically an SRT. The engine may have been replaced, or a non-SRT model may have received a performance conversion. Check the factory engine and drivetrain information tied to the VIN, then inspect for signs of a swap such as non-factory wiring, modified mounts, mismatched controllers, altered cooling lines, or an engine number that does not fit the build records.
These modifications can be valuable to a buyer who specifically wants a converted performance vehicle. They are not evidence that the vehicle was factory-built as an SRT, and they should be disclosed and valued as modifications.
Model-year cautions that prevent false positives
Do not carry a code from one year into another
The FCA/NICB manuals demonstrate that SRT naming and coding change by model year. The 2020 Challenger SRT Hell Cat entry and the 2022 entries for SRT Hell Cat and SRT Hell Cat Redeye cannot be used interchangeably. Always write the year beside the code in your notes.

Do not equate engine size with series identity
Engine displacement, supercharger branding, horsepower claims and an SRT-branded component may narrow the possibilities, but they do not establish the series. The same engine family can appear in differently named trims or in vehicles converted after production.
Use the correct reference for older Ram SRT-10 trucks
Older Ram SRT-10 trucks require a model-year-specific identification reference and the equipment-plate check described in the operating-manual material. Do not assume that a later Ram VIN guide, a generic online decoder, or a badge-code list covers every SRT-10 year.
What to do when the records disagree
- Stop the transaction. Do not pay a premium for SRT status while the identity is unresolved.
- Recheck the VIN character by character. A transcription error can create an apparent mismatch.
- Confirm the model year. Use the year shown on the vehicle and the paperwork, then select the corresponding FCA/NICB manual.
- Compare every identifying source. Check the doorframe label, title, registration, equipment plate and Mopar report.
- Document modifications. Photograph badges, engine markings, plates, wiring and replaced panels, and ask for receipts.
- Request dealer verification. Have an authorized dealer reconcile the factory build data before you rely on the seller’s description.
- Use accurate wording in the sale. If the records prove a conversion rather than a factory SRT, describe it as converted or modified, not factory-original SRT.

- VIN matches title, registration and insurance documents.
- Correct FCA/NICB identification manual selected for the model year.
- Claimed SRT series and body code found in that year’s manual.

When a modified vehicle can still be the right purchase
Authenticity and desirability are separate decisions. A documented non-SRT conversion may offer the performance, sound or appearance you want. It should be priced and insured as a modified vehicle, with the conversion work, parts, tuning, safety systems and maintenance history clearly recorded.
